Part II
Windcry
Prologue
"Oh damn. I don't believe this."
Kagura fumbled through her garments, passing her hands over the earth above her head and to each side of her body. Sesshoumaru paused from kissing her body, braced above her by his remaining arm.
"What is it?" His voice betrayed the impatience his face ventured to mask.
"Ergh, dammit. Dammit, dammit, dammit!" She pounded the ground on either side of her with her fists.
"What is the matter? No more protective charms?" The inuyoukai moved to the side, sitting on his half-naked rear. His kimono laid in a crumpled heap on top if his armor, his hakama loose from his hips from all of Kagura's pulling, beginning to fall below his buttocks, the cool grass tickling at his hot skin.
She stared up at the night enveloping them like a dark blue curtain, white light burning through pinholes in its sapphire vastness. "I must have dropped it somewhere." Kagura sighed heavily. Sesshoumaru lay down next to her, the wind user folding her arms over her breasts as he rolled toward her, so close their collective breath became one smoldering stream of vapor in the cool sweet air.
"So…" He touched her arm. "You wish to stop?"
"I don't see what other choice we have." She hugged herself, shielding that which he sought to reveal by a tug on her arm.
"We may choose to continue." Slender fingers danced across her pale skin, tracing her collarbone. Crimson eyes widened on him with alarm, gold meeting them with a calmness that still somehow spoke of longing and intent.
"But… Aren't you worried about what may result?"
"I don't worry," he said, his voice like silk. "This was inevitable, Kagura. You were eventually going to have to make the choice between fear and fact. Did you honestly think we would keep chasing that girl to resupply those things when we have Naraku to find and deal with?" His hand gently clasped one dainty wrist, a tender tug all he needed to lift her hand. She drew a deep but ragged breath, letting her arms fall from her chest.
She succumbed to his appeal, his bare chest gliding against her breasts, erect nipples dragging slightly across his skin. His face mere inches from hers, he peered deeply into her eyes. "Fear is a useless emotion, Kagura," he breathed, brushing her lips with his. "One we can't afford to feel."

Chapter 1
"I'm already so big."
Kagura stood on the riverbank, staring at her reflection in the water. She pulled her kimono tight across her belly, feeling the firmness in it with her fingers. Sesshoumaru had only been gone two cycles of the moon at most, but that didn't make the result of their careless encounters any less evident. She only hoped it a testament to the youkai power their child must hold.
"It's funny how quickly we youkai develop and then how slowly we age. How often I forget I am youkai no longer," she said to no one in particular. She continued absently running her hands over her middle, turning away from the river to find Jaken standing a yard or so behind her, the corners of his mouth contorted downward, brow wrinkled over buggy yellow eyes.
"What?" Kagura glared.
"Oh nothing, Lady Kagura. I think I'll go see what Rin is up to." The imp bowed awkwardly, scurrying off into the trees.
The wind user felt uneasy, even with Ah-Un standing watch nearby. She drew a deep breath, letting it out slowly, her gaze drifting along the trees, up into the blue, nearly cloudless sky, her vision coming to rest on the clear water of the river. In spite of her best efforts to relax, it wasn't long before that uneasiness became a visceral nausea, the ominous buzzing coming from the trees behind her giving her good reason to be frightened.
"Kagura," an all too familiar voice purred. "So you carry the child of the Great Dog Demon and Lord of the Western Lands. I bet you feel so privileged." There was no mistaking that wicked tone, Kagura turning her face in horror.
"Naraku," she breathed.
"Hello, Kagura. What's wrong? Did I startle you?" Her maker grinned, saimyoushou buzzing around him where he hovered above the place Jaken had been standing mere moments before.
"Naraku," she repeated, clutching her stomach, backing toward the river's edge. She grinned darkly, a slip of her foot nearly sending her in the cold water. "You stupid bastard. Sesshoumaru will return here soon and he'll annihilate you if you so much as threaten his child."
The dark hanyou chuckled, unfazed. "It is not my intention to be the one who causes you or your offspring harm… at least not directly. Sesshoumaru may very well be the one who does you harm in my place when he finds out you carry a half-human heir. He'll see it as an abomination. Does he even know of your delicate condition?"
Her human heart raced, blood coursing almost painfully hard through her veins, Kagura blinking burgeoning tears from her eyes. "Your arrogance, as always, will be your undoing. He will protect me."
"If he so desires to protect you, then where is he now when you need him most?"
"He's looking for you, you sorry son of a whore-"
He made his move, a tentacle blasting toward Kagura. Ah-Un then made his, exploding the tree-trunk-like appendage before it could reach her with fiery lightning-breath shooting from both heads; blue from one mouth, green from the other. Naraku quickly dispatched him with another, knocking him into a large tree. The dragon fell hard to the ground in a veritable pile of itself, and did not get up. The dark hanyou turned again to Kagura, laughing as his next wave made contact with the right side of her chest, propelling her into the river.
The shock of cold water surrounding her had her gulping some in her lungs, Kagura at last planting her feet at the bottom and pushing herself coughing and gagging to the surface. Had it been her imagination, merely an apparition of fear? Or, when the appendage pushed against her chest, did a tiny extension of it penetrate her flesh? Then again, if he wanted to kill her, her heart was on the other side, no visible hole anywhere when she looked down. Only her soaking wet kimono clinging to her breasts. Just another game, she thought.
Naraku's laughter was short-lived, a blue flash flowing like an electric tidal wave from behind him, destroying all flora in its path and temporarily disrupting his protective barrier. Had his smugness no bounds? He dared laugh again.
The white figure who had produced the blast came into view at last. Sesshoumaru had returned.
"Kagura, you had better get out of there and get dry," Naraku took his time telling her. "You are mortal now. You don't want to catch your death of cold, do you?" A flash of his own and he was gone, leaving the former wind sorceress dumbfounded, still up to her chest in water.
Ah-Un slowly stirred, legs folding beneath him where he had fallen, Sesshoumaru's gilded eyes drifting from him to Kagura standing in the river. He swiftly returned Toukijin to its place at his side, rushing to the riverbank to offer his hand.
"Are you all right? Did he hurt you?" His eyes dipped toward the waterline, slowly tracing her figure upward, coming to rest on her juddering lips.
She was reluctant to move from the water, which hid the very thing for which Naraku expected him to dispatch her. But they were alone, and he often shed much of his hard exterior when no one else was around; no meddlesome imp or curious child to sit in judgment of him. The revelation was inevitable, what point was there to be petrified with fear? And, yet, she remained frozen.
"What's wrong? Why will you not come out of the water?" His brows knit at her, the corners of his mouth turning downward. Kagura shivered and stepped onto higher ground, her kimono clinging to her belly, no hiding what she so feared to show, Sesshoumaru's brows lifting over widened eyes.
"I see."
"Sesshoumaru, I-"
"You're pregnant."
"I know. I'm sorry-"
"This was to be expected."
"So… what are you going to do?"
"My search for Naraku ended where I began," he sighed, pulling her onto the riverbank with him. "Or, rather, he found me looking for you. Perhaps it is best I not go anywhere, at least for a while." His hand swept up and down one arm and shoulder in an apparent effort to warm her, pretty face taking on a rare look of confusion when she let out a relieved laugh.
"Naraku said it was not his intention to harm me or the baby." She looked down to her stomach. "He was sure you would do it for him."
"You had that theory all along. Did you forget?" He wrapped his arm around her shoulders, guiding her into what trees remained between them and where the remains of the campfire burned nearby. They stood by the fire, Jaken and Rin still absent but no smell of blood in the air, save for the scratches Kagura suffered from her fall. Sesshoumaru slid off his armor and took off his kimono and kosode, keeping his juban and the mokomoko slung over his shoulder. He offered the garments to Kagura, the former wind sorceress turning from him to peel off her soggy clothes. She tossed them to the youkai lord to be hung up to dry, tying the almost too-big garments tightly around her, securing their sashes above the swell of her belly, and sat by the fire to warm her chilled body. Sesshoumaru sat down beside her, both staring silently into the flames.
"You didn't answer my question," he said at last.
"Oh… Did I forget?" Her voice shook a little. "What, my theory?"
"Not so much your theory but what I told you when you originally stated it."
She drew a frayed breath, shaking her head. "I told that bastard you wouldn't hurt me… that, if anything, you'd protect me."
"Good." Sesshoumaru took a stick from the ground to stoke the fire's struggling embers, ignoring the semi-stunned stare lifting to him.
Kagura loosed the shallow breath drawn, her head falling with it. "So… you're not angry with me?"
"Angry at you for something you could not help? No. I seem to remember being present during such a time as when a child could be created between you and I. Besides, I would have to be an absolute brute to fault you for something in which I obviously took part."
"Well, I guess but-"
"Discussion closed."
"Are you sure?"
He tossed the stick he was using to poke at the fire to the side, its flames reflected warmly in his golden eyes as they met hers of crimson. "If you are to bear me an heir, full youkai or not, so be it. We have reached this path as it was destined." He touched his hand to where his new heir was growing. "Written in the stars."
Kagura smiled broadly, her hand covering his where it lay on her stomach. "I think it is strong in youkai blood. It's growing so fast."
The tiniest of smiles tugged at his tight mouth. "I sense it, too."
