With You: Chapter Five
The Awakening, Part Two
Jaken’s eyes scanned the room. They looked all around, searching each person’s face. He recognized Inuyasha, who was standing over him with an irritated look on his face. He saw a little girl whose features closely resembled Inuyasha. Must be his child. As his eyes continued to look around, he saw a man dressed in commoner’s clothes. Then, as his head was making its way around the room, he saw a young woman dressed in a blue kimono.
The woman’s features looked so familiar, but for some reason, he couldn’t place them. As he continued to look at her, she slowly began to make her way towards him. When she was close enough for him to take in enough of her, it suddenly clicked. His eyes widened and the surprise was evident in his voice. “Rin, is that you?”
When the words escaped from his mouth, the girl gasped, then dropped to her knees and snatched him up in a painful embrace, crying out, “Master Jaken!”As he did his best to ignore the pain from the girl’s embrace, he mentally noted that his guess had been correct. ”Rin, you’re hurting me.”
“Oh!” The girl released him and backed away. “Sorry, Master Jaken.”
Jaken frowned. Silly girl. He grimaced as a sharp pain shot through his right shoulder. He went to reach with his left arm, but noticed that it wouldn’t move. He looked and saw that it had been bandaged and placed in a sling. He looked at the bandage with a look of pure disgust, and noticed that his arm wasn’t the only thing bandaged. His chest was mostly wrapped in bandages, as well as his head, and he reeked of medicinal herbs.
“What is this? Why am I covered in bandages?”
Rin smiled. “You were badly injured, and collapsed outside of the village. I brought you in, and Kagome bandaged you up.” Rin’s glance turned to face someone standing behind him.
“Kagome?” Jaken turned around and looked at the woman standing behind him. He immediately recognized the girl who had traveled with Inuyasha during his travels. She was dressed in the clothes of a priestess, and her clothes were bulging, leading Jaken to believe that she was pregnant. “Well, thank you.” His voice was flat, void of any real gratitude.
Kagome frowned at the lackluster response. She opened her mouth to speak, but a spasm of pain kept her voice from escaping. The cringe was only slight, with very little movement, but it was enough to make Inuyasha take his attention away from Jaken. As the half-demon made his way towards her, Jaken watched him. Inuyasha’s movements were slow, soft, and graceful. He placed his arm around her shoulders and gripped her hand in his. She clutched it as the pain continued to shoot throughout her body. Jaken looked at Inuyasha with a look on his face that clearly said that he didn’t understand this behavior. Inuyasha had always handled himself with a somewhat unapproachable, tough guy, can’t-tell-me-nothing type of attitude. But here, he was comforting his woman; he was showing a side of himself that Jaken had never seen before. It was very…..unsettling.

Kaede looked at the green demon on the floor. She watched as his gaze followed her dad’s movements as he made his way towards her mother, who was bracing the wall in pain. The demon’s eyes began to convey a look of confusion as he watched her dad comfort her mom. He looked like he was uncomfortable watching her father’s movements; like he didn’t understand why he was acting the way he was acting. She turned her gaze back towards her mother and father. She had seen this behavior out of her dad many times, ever since her mother’s stomach started to stretch. She couldn’t understand why he was confused. So she made her way to him and crouched down next to him.
“You don’t like my daddy very much, do you?”
The imp demon’s head snapped around. He had been so engrossed in her father’s actions that he didn’t notice as the girl sat down next to him. His mouth sprayed as he blurted the words, “Wha-what did you say?”
“My daddy. You don’t like him very much, do you?”
The look on his face relaxed. “Well, actually, no. No, I don’t care for your father at all.”
Kaede frowned. “Why? What did my daddy ever do to you?”
Jaken’s face donned a smug look. “Well, he doesn’t deserve my affection. He’s done nothing but impede my Lord Sesshomaru’s quest to rule the Western lands.”
“Ooooooh! You know my Uncle Sesshomaru, too?” The girl’s face lit up.
Uncle?! Jaken couldn’t believe his ears. He couldn’t believe the words coming out of the girl’s mouth. His voice was stern as he said, “Lord Sesshomaru does not like your father. He does not like your mother. Therefore, he does not like and wants nothing to do with you. He may be your uncle by blood, but that does not mean that he is willing to embrace that role.”
The girl frowned. “I knew that. I didn’t need you to tell me that. My daddy already told me about how his brother tried to kill him. But how do you know my uncle?”
This silly girl just doesn’t get it. “I am Lord Sesshomaru’s faithful servant. I have followed my lord for many years and I will follow him for many more as long as he will allow me.” Jaken’s face donned a smug look as he proudly said these words.
“So, you owe him your life, kinda like Rin?”
Jaken looked at her with uncertainty. “Well, that’s how I met him, but the choice was because I was impressed with his strength, not out of some misguided sense of recompense.”
“So, he did save your life?”
Jaken shook his head. It was obvious that he was wasting his time. He instead turned his attention to the young woman standing next to him. He almost didn’t recognize her, and he still didn’t want to believe it was her. Rin had grown into a woman. She had to be one of the most beautiful women he’d ever laid eyes on. By human standards, anyway.
The kimono was blue, adorned with flower designs and brilliant patterns. He remembered it well; he was the one who had chosen the cloth that it was made from, thinking that it would make Rin happy. Not that he really cared much about her happiness, but if she was happy, then Sesshomaru’s favor would be with him, and that was important above all. The kimono was tight-fitting, with the patterned cloth used as the osode and a solid light blue cloth making up the mobakama. It was similar to the everyday wear that Jaken had seen the demon slayer who traveled with Inuyasha wear, only blue, and with wider sleeves.
As for her features, well, the gods had been kind. Her face was still the same, only older and a lot softer. The ponytail that had always been above her head was gone; instead, it was moved to the more traditional place at the nape of her neck. Her hair had grown longer, halfway down her back, and it seemed to shine in the sunlight, like the light reflecting off of a clear lake.
Having taken in her facial features, his eyes started to take in the changes to her body. Once again, the gods had been more than kind. The girl was short in stature, only a few inches shorter than Inuyasha’s woman. She was slender, but well-endowed. Her waist was small, but not without curves. She was every bit a full grown woman.
As Jaken observed Rin, he sensed something ominous around him. It was then that he noticed that everyone was staring at him. Apparently, he’d been observing Rin a little too carefully.
“You alright there, Jaken?” Inuyasha asked.
Jaken looked around nervously. “Uhhh, yes.” Clearing his throat and composing himself, he said, “Yes, I’m okay.”
They all continued to stare at him with shady eyes, until Rin’s voice broke through the silence. “It’s understandable that Master Jaken would stare at me. We haven’t seen each other in almost seven years. Right, Master Jaken?”
Jaken nodded. “That’s right.” He snuck another look at Rin, flabbergasted at what he saw. I never thought that the annoying human girl who chose to follow Lord Sesshomaru would grow into such a beautiful woman.

Inuyasha continued to stare at Jaken with uncertainty in his eyes. He was almost certain that he had seen a hint of lust in the demon’s gaze. It made sense, since the girl had grown into a full-fledged woman, but still…
Pushing it to the back of his mind, he turned his attention back to Kagome. It seemed the worst of the pain had passed, and she was beginning to regain her composure. “Are you alright?”
Kagome nodded. “I’m fine. I don’t think it’ll be much longer, Inuyasha.”
“Glad to hear it.” Inuyasha smiled. He really hoped it would be a boy, but was open to having another girl. As he helped Kagome, he felt a pair of eyes watching him. He turned to see Jaken watching him intensely, a look of confusion in his eyes. His eyes narrowed into a glare. “What are you looking at?”
Kagome looked at Inuyasha, then at Jaken. Seeing the demon’s gaze, she said, “I think Jaken’s so used to seeing you act so tough and macho that he can’t believe what he’s seeing out of you now.” She smiled. “I think it’s kind of funny.”
Jaken turned his head, embarrassed. He saw the villager was still standing in the doorway, his eyes fixated on him. “What are you staring at?” Jaken snapped.
Everyone was confused. It took a minute for everyone to realize he was talking to the villager. He’d been so silent that they had all forgotten he was there. “Is there anything else?” Inuyasha asked the man.
He shook his head. “I’m sorry. I was so engrossed in the demon, I completely spaced out. I’ll be going now.”
As the man turned to leave, Inuyasha called out to him. “Hey, what’s your name?”
“Gin.”
“Well, Gin, I’d appreciate it if you would let everyone know that we have the situation under control. This demon is harmless as long as he can’t use his staff.”
“Understood. But what about the other demons, the ones we found in the woods?”
Jaken turned toward the villager. “What demons?”
“Lord Sesshomaru and Ah-Un. They’re both badly hurt, so Inuyasha left them in the forest,” said Rin.
Jaken rose to his feet as fast as his broken body would allow. “Then I want to see them. I will just stay by Lord Sesshomaru’s side.”
“Wow, you really owe my uncle, don’t you?”
Kaede’s voice was beginning to annoy him to no end. She’s just as bad as Rin was when she was a child.
“Kaede.”
The girl turned her attention to her father. “Yes, Papa?”
“I want you to stop calling Sesshomaru your uncle, okay?”
Kaede frowned. “But, papa-“
Inuyasha shook his head. “No buts. He hasn’t earned the right to be called your uncle. All the times he’s tried to kill your mother and I have proven that.”
Jaken screamed. “You stole Lord Sesshomaru’s birth right! He was entitled to the Tessaiga, and you not only stole it from him, you used it to cut off his left arm!”
Inuyasha shook his head. “You just don’t get it, do you? The old man never intended to leave Sesshomaru the Tessaiga! He never intended for Sesshomaru to have anything but his territory! The Tessaiga, the Meidou Zhanghetsua, it was all supposed to passed down to me. Don’t you understand that? And besides, I don’t know why you’re complaining. I’ve talked to Totosai, and he said that Sesshomaru’s new sword, Bakusaiga, is much stronger than my Tessaiga could ever hope to be.” Inuyasha sounded bitter as the last part escaped from his mouth.
Jaken hung his head. “Still…”
“Look, why don’t we leave the distant past where it belongs and focus on something else?”
Jaken looked at Inuyasha. “Like what?”
Inuyasha grimaced. “Like who or what in the hell did that to you and Sesshomaru?”
Jaken flinched. “Very well. If you want to know, I will tell you.”
