“To the East” “Witch!” bit out Sesshomaru, furious at her sudden appearance. Had she been spying this whole time? The nerve! Another thought crossed his mind. “It was you! You did this!” The old hag chuckled at him, further angering him. Wiping an imaginary tear from her sunken eye, she took in the scene before her in amusement. The daiyoukai, nearly shaking in rage, the mortal's blood drying and flaking on his arrogant chin. The woman-child was slowly making her away towards the sleeping young, staying close to the ground, trying not to attract attention to her person. Silently this time, the crone laughed at her. There was not much that happened that escaped her notice. Rheumy eyes swung towards the glowering lord, appearing as innocent as possible. “Me, mi'lord?” she asked, acting offended. “I would never force one's destiny upon them! Granted, I might have enhanced the atmosphere a tad, but the heavy petting, that was all ye! No need to try to wake the girl, mortal. She is merely under a sleeping spell. I will lift it when me business here is completed.” “Who-who are you?” Kagome whispered, clutching a soundly sleeping Rin to her chest, protectively. “What do you want?” “Merely to congratulate Lord Sesshomaru on taking his mate. He truly has been searching for so long.” Her smile failed to reach her eyes. “Yes, yes.” “This Sesshomaru has taken his mortal mate,” Sesshomaru said slowly. “The other half of the prophecy, now, witch. The Sun Dog as a breeding partner. Tell this Sesshomaru where to find her.” Shocked, Kagome stared at him. It was all to fulfill some stupid prophecy that was probably a pipe-dream this old hag had spun for him?! She bit back her own anger, both at him and herself. “So quick to jump ahead, mi'lord!” scolded the aged youkai gently. “Won't ye want to take the time to enjoy yer new mate before ye seek the other half?” She was deliberately baiting him, toying with fire, yet she knew the steps of her deadly dance far better than the pale inu knew how to ignite the blaze. Sesshomaru rushed forward to seize the crone by her throat and demand the answer, even if he had to squeeze it out with her dying breath. To his silent amazement, she side-stepped him with grace belying her age. Dust brown robes swayed just beyond his green-glowing talons. Her laughter was almost painful in his ears. Kagome, remaining silent, took in the scene before her, confusion evident on her features. “Okay, mi'lord! Ye talked this one into it. I'm feeling generous, in light of ye's attempt on me life.” Squatting slowly, joints popping like logs in a fire, the witch drew out her pouch from her waist-band. The runes she threw were different than what he remembered. They were brown and black, the runes inscribed on them terribly faded; he was amazed her feeble eyes could read them. “Ye'll be heading to the East, mi'lord.” Neither her voice nor her posture changed as they always had in the past. Sesshomaru opened his mouth to confront her on this sudden development, when she threw up a gnarled hand, the fingers unable to straighten themselves. “I merely throw the bones for me own entertainment. Since ye left this one last time, the vision of where ye head has swam in the brain. “A cave ye be going to,” she continued. “Guarded by the white bull Kames. He be strong in his magic, but this one shall give ye somethin' that be stronger. Show it to him, and he'll let ye pass with no fuss. The token I be givin' shall lead ye to yer answers. Listen to the heart, and ye shall find them with ease.” With obvious difficulty, the hag regained her feet. Withered hands reached inside the robe, hesitated. The hooded head glanced up at the daiyoukai, mischief swimming in its depths. “Are ye sure ye wouldn't want to play with yer mate first?” She cackled madly at his rumbling growl. “Yes, merely testing ye, mi'lord. Have to get me fun where me finds it these days. They are so dreary.” From somewhere deep in her robes, she pulled out something that glinted silver in the firelight. Holding it flat in her palm, she held it up so both Sesshomaru and Kagome could easily see it. Curved and cold, it was a full-finger ring, intricately made with silver shot through with white. At the first knuckle-joint, a large stone of an amber color seemed to glow with an inner light. The tip of the ring was talon-like, menacing. Kagome felt revulsion at the sight, and shrank back, unnoticed. The old woman moved forward, not towards Sesshomaru, but instead she bended her aged body before the cowering miko. “Ye must be the one to wear it, child,” she whispered in a low voice, suddenly feeling warm and comforted. She knew its meaning, and rejoiced. “Lead yer headstrong mate to his answers, guide him with ye gentle hand, and he shall return the treatment.” “Give this Sesshomaru the ring, hag,” growled the daiyoukai in a threatening voice. In the back of his mind, he could feel the ball of emotions that were Kagome. Her fear of the youkai (or was it the ring?) was causing him to reactive instinctively, striving to protect and comfort his mate. He shifted his stance, not sure if he liked the new connection he had with the human. “Nay, mi'lord,” came the soft response from the robed being. “This ring be forged by the powerful magics of a miko many years past, and only thus by a miko can it be worn.” Kagome shook her head vehemently, refusing acceptance. She could feel Sesshomaru's anger at the woman in her mind, but pushed it away. “I don't want anything to do with that thing!” She yelped in fear when the youkai, with a swiftness that astonished the human girl, grasped her left hand and slide the taloned ring onto her middle finger. Abrupt heat radiated down her palm, up her arm, wrapped itself around her heart. Gasping, she flopped backwards, chest burning, her left hand feeling like someone had poured acid directly onto the tender flesh. With a roar, the western lord bound into action, Kagome's pain flooding his brain. The hag dodged the swipes of his hands, the fingers dripping poison, searing the ground where it landed. A whispered word reached his ears. His movements ceased, muscles frozen in place. “The pain in her flesh will end as abruptly as it came, mi'lord,” the youkai said softly, her tone sad. “This one does not wish to cause her discomfort, yet it was necessary. The answers ye seek are important. Yer pups lives depend on it. The fate of my people depends on it.” “What nonsense do you spout, witch!” bellowed the daiyoukai, showing an unusual amount of emotion, surprising even himself. Distractedly, he heard Kagome's pants as she caught her breath. The pain coming from the ball of emotions was fading. Reaching up, those gnarled hands grasped the hood of her robes. Slowly, the hood lowered, and an incredible transformation occurred before the eyes of the inu-youkai and his human mate. The sagging skin firmed along the jaw and cheeks, deep tan replacing the sallow color of her face, neck and hands. A single gray stripe decorated the soft, curved cheeks. A matching stripe adorned her nimble wrists. Tufts of wispy gray hair grew and grew, growing deep brown, cascading in curls down a back now straight and tall. Rheumy eyes faded, honey infusing their depths. Intelligence radiated from their orbs. A sad smile graced the beautiful features of the now young and vibrant woman. Sesshomaru's eyes widened as he glanced at her forehead. A yellow sun sat directly in the middle of her unwrinkled skin, four lines flew from the orb, one arching up into her hairline, another down her delicate nose, the other two stretching over her eyebrows to her temples. “Inuyoko,” murmured Sesshomaru, amazed. He caught Kagome's startled glance, felt her confusion muddle his thoughts. “Alpha female of the Sun Dog Clan, and High Lady of the Eastern Lands.” His own bewilderment showed on his face. “Alpha no more,” Inuyoko moaned in sorrow. Her aura washed over the group, flooding them with warmth so strong Kagome began to sweat. “The clan is gone, Moon Dog. The mistake of your sire destroyed us.” Pain so powerful even Kagome felt it flowed from the inu-youkai female. “I am the last of my breed.” “You-you're my breeding partner?” Sesshomaru couldn't keep the awe from his voice. Kagome's anger spiked in his head; he ignored it. Sadly, the brunette shook her head, curls bouncing this way and that. “Nay, Sesshomaru,” she replied, the melody in her tone like chimes in a storm. “I've become too old to bare pups. The hag was a clever fuse, wasn't it? It tore my heart to pieces to deceive you for so long, yet it was necessary. You needed to bare the knowledge of the runes; they spoke in riddles even my wisdom could not decipher, and I doubt yours will either, Moon Dog. The ring the miko wears shall lead you to the answers, and you'll fulfill the prophecy.” A wane smiled crossed her lovely face, then disappeared. “Through your pups, my race shall live.” Inuyoko vanished in a gust of wind. “Kagome-chan?” Rin stirred in the young miko's arms, rubbing sleepily at her eyes, naïve to the events that had transpired moments before. She blinked at the rising sun, smiling happily at the dawn of a new adventure. Turning her innocent face towards her father, she brightened even more. “Lord Sesshomaru! Where shall we go today?” Her enthusiasm brought a smile to Kagome's face. After several minutes of silence, the daiyoukai turned away from them. “To the East.” *** Please R&R!While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
