Kouga laid her bloody body down on his fur pallet and tried to wake her again, but she wouldn’t come to. She was ghostly pale and her heartbeat was weak. She had lost entirely too much blood. Kouga ran to his chest and pulled out a handful of bandages and began tying off her wounds to try and staunch the bleeding. He whined as he worked to save his beloved’s life. How could anybody do such a thing to her? She was completely mangled. Both of her upper thighs had deep slashes going from her hips to her knees and her stomach had been sliced up to her breast. She had more cuts along her chest and arms and her poor little body was covered in ugly black and purple bruises and blood...Gods…so much blood. Her left eye was swollen shut and surrounded by a fearsome bruise and she had a cut along her temple. Both of her cheeks were bruised and her lips were split and bleeding. His whines increased when the tourniquets began to soak through with her blood. Her breathing became slower and more erratic. He howled out of agony and fear for the one he loved and gently licked her face. He was losing her. Something shattered in his chest and he howled again.
He was lost in the taste of her skin, tears, and blood. So much so that he never noticed the healers rush into the room. They tried to get Kouga to back up to help her, but he growled at them. He was going to stay put. They could work around him. “Get to work!” Kouga ordered forcefully. They scurried into action, grabbing cloths and bandages, filling bowls with water and washing her broken body. Kouga felt a hand on his shoulder and growled again. “Come on, Kouga. Let them work.” A concerned Saburo said. “I will not leave my mate. Not again.” Kouga said sternly. “You’re not going to leave her. You’re just going to give the healers room to do what they have to. We’ll just be right outside. Come on, Kouga. She needs this. Come on.” Saburo coaxed. Kouga ran his eyes down her body again and cringed. Saburo was right. He leaned down and licked her face again before getting up and following the white wolf out of the room. He was met by two very concerned sets of eyes. “What happened to little sister, Kouga?” Ginta asked quietly. “Is she going to be okay?” Hakkaku asked just as quiet. “Look, she’s going to be fine. I’m sure of it.” Saburo said confidently, trying to reassure everyone around him. “What the hell happen, Saburo?” Kouga asked in a hushed whisper. He had turned his back to his three friends and was staring intently at the leather flap covering the opening to his den. “I heard a girl scream and went to investigate. I found her like that. She was tied to a tree, Kouga, and they were beating on her. I killed the fucking snakes, don’t you worry. Then I cut her down and raced her back here as fast as I could.” Kouga was shaking from so many emotions storming through him all at once, rage, hurt, guilt, sorrow, despair, fear, worry. He felt as though he would fly apart at any moment. He couldn’t speak, didn’t trust his own voice. This was all his fault. Had he asked where she went in Edo, he could’ve been with her when she was attacked, could’ve protected her. If he would have just visited her sooner, she would have never went to that village alone. If he had never let her go to begin with, she wouldn’t be laying on his bed fighting for her life. He punched the rock wall effectively compacting the area and leaving a hole in the rock face. This was all his damn fault! Saburo’s heart went out to his friend. The little priestess was in bad shape and despite his confident words; he wasn’t so sure the little onna would make it. Kouga loved this girl deeply and he knew he was beating himself up over her current state, but there was nothing he could do to comfort him without sending his tormented friend over the edge. He’d never seen Kouga like this and he didn’t know what to do. He looked to Ginta and Hakkaku to find answers, but they looked just as lost as he was. The only thing they could do was wait. Several hours, multiple holes, growls, snarls, and whines later the main healer came out of the room. She was greeted by four anxious and fearful wolves. “She is resting now, but has been hurt badly. We do not know if she will make it through the night or, if she does, when she will regain consciousness. We’ve done all we can. Refrain from moving her as much as possible and make sure her wounds are cleaned every day. Prince Kouga, we have left many herbs and bandages for your mate. I am sorry that we could not do more.” Kouga silently entered the room as the other healers filed out, followed by his three companions. She lay under a fur pelt sleeping. Her heartbeat was a little stronger than it was before, but her breathing was still labored. True to their word, the healers had left a large stack of herbs and bandages next to the pallet. Kouga walked over to Kagome and knelt next to her head. He smoothed her hair affectionately with a clawed hand. Ginta and Hakkaku knelt on her other side and whined softly. Saburo put his hand on Kouga’s shoulder. The healers had cleaned the blood off of Kagome, but the bruises tarnished her beautiful, normally pale skin and it caused Kouga’s heart to clench in his chest. What had this innocent girl ever done that the Gods would allow this to happen? Kouga whined as he lightly stroked her hair. They all stayed like that for a long, silent time. When the sun began to rise, Ginta and Hakkaku licked Kagome’s forehead and exited the den. Saburo stayed behind for a few minutes. “Kouga, I know you don’t want to leave her and she’s going to need someone here with her at all times. I’m going to take charge of the pack while you stay with her, okay? You won’t have to worry about a thing, but focusing on getting her well. If you need anything just let me know.” Saburo rose to his feet and just before he lifted the flap to leave Kouga spoke up. “Thank you, my friend.” “That’s what Beta’s are for.” He said with a halfhearted smirk, trying to relieve some of tension. “For that and for being there for her when I wasn’t.” Saburo’s heart clenched at the pain in Kouga’s voice. He shouldn’t blame himself for this, but trying to convince his stubborn friend of this would be like trying to squeeze blood from stone. “You were right, you know. She is a beauty.” He turned and left them alone, silently praying that the little onna his Alpha loved so much would be okay and went to face his new tasks. The first thing on his agenda came rushing toward him. It was time for Ayame control. “Who was that? Where’s Kouga? Is he okay? I need to go see him.” She asked hastily. “You will do no such thing, Ayame. Leave him be. He needs to be alone.” Saburo said firmly, but the female was having none of it and he now knew how Kouga felt. He started to feel bad about all the times he seeked Ayame on his friend as a joke. “I’m going. He needs me. We’re going to be mates and I need to be there for him. Who was that?” She stubbornly tried to push past the white wolf. He grabbed her arm and hauled her back to face him. “You listen here and you listen good. I will not be ignored and while Kouga is caring for his true mate, I’m in charge. You will submit to me. You will leave Kouga and Kagome alone or I can promise you will not like the consequences. Do you understand me, girl?” He seethed through clinched teeth. Ayame paled at the mention of Kagome’s name, but nodded. He released her and waited until she left the common den before grabbing the attention of two sentinel wolves nearby. “Kaito, Isamu! You will remain posted at Kouga’s den. No one goes in without my or Kouga’s approval first and if Ayame comes within ten feet of that door you come and get me immediately. Do I make myself clear?” “Yes, Saburo!” They said in unison and went to fill their new posts. He had a feeling that Ayame was about to become more trouble than she was worth. Two weeks! It had been two weeks since Lady Kagome had left Edo for the village in the east. Rin had wanted to go, but Lady Kagome wouldn’t allow it. She had said it was too dangerous considering Rin’s young age and she didn’t want to risk her getting infected by the, what did she call it, oh yes, contagion. Lady Kagome was always like that, thinking of others before herself, putting herself in the position of protector. Rin admired that in the older woman and held as much respect for her as she did for her adopted Taiyoukai father. Even with all the Miko’s strengths, Rin couldn’t suppress the sick twinge in her gut. Lady Kagome had been gone far too long and it just wasn’t like her. She had missed all the preparations for her wedding, something she had promised to be a part of. Kagome never broke a promise, never. She had been so excited about the upcoming nuptials. She had an elegant wedding kimono made as a gift and had worked closely with Rin to make sure she stood as proud in appearance and mannerism, as she was in spirit on her wedding day. Lady Kagome was her mentor and the closest thing she had to a mother. Her absence during this time just didn’t sit well. Rin had asked Lady Kaede about it, but only received the explanation that no one was able to predict the length or turn of events during an outbreak of illnesses, especially, one’s that involved children. She knew Kagome would never abandon her patients, but she also knew she was quite skilled in healing and had always had some form of extra knowledge about most diseases. Her knowledge had served her well throughout the years and had prevented many deaths. She had even discussed her concerns with Aiko, only to receive roughly the same explanation. There had to be someone other than her that noticed the strangeness of it. She was heading toward the Goshinki tree to find Master InuYasha. He would listen and know what to do. He was her friend and companion; surely he would care for Lady Kagome’s well-being. She found him sitting in the branches, holding his sword against his shoulder. “Master InuYasha, may I speak with you for a moment?” “Don’t call me Master, runt. I ain’t associated with my bastard half-brother or my old man’s title.” Rin bit back the urge to defend her Lord’s honor and willed her anger to subside. This was about Kagome and verbally assaulting the argumentative half-demon would not help. “I was just wondering if you know what has become of Lady Kagome?” “What am I, the wench’s keeper?” He replied in his usual gruff way. “I’m just concerned. She has been gone longer than usual and with my wedding in just under a week and winter approaching…” Her throat closed around the last of her sentence. She wouldn’t give into the dread that was flooding her insides. “Look, she probably had some problems with the brats or something. Don’t worry about her, Kagome can take care of herself.” He turned his head from her signaling the end of their little talk. Rin knew that Lady Kagome was more than capable of defending herself against many foes. Her sensei was Sesshomaru-sama and he settled for nothing less than perfection. That’s it! She would talk to Sesshomaru-sama. Lady Kagome had a large influence on his decision to allow the union between Kohaku and herself. He never allowed someone to sway him in any way. So, he had to care about Kagome. Sesshomaru-sama had never let her down and she had never been nervous around him, not even when she had first met his bestial side, in that clearing where he was recovering from his fight over Tetsusaiga. This time, however, was different. She was going to ask for him to search for a human that wasn’t under his protection. She just hoped she didn’t anger him overly much when she asked. It was the day that they had their bi-monthly training sessions and she knew Lady Kagome wouldn’t show up. He would come to the village and inquire of the Miko’s absence, as well as visit with her, like he always did. She wasn’t disappointed. He was exiting Lady Kagome’s hut when she got back to the village. “Rin, are you well?” He asked in his bored tone, but she knew he worried over her. “I am, Sesshomaru-sama. I’m so glad to see you.” She said honestly. “As I you. Tell me, where is the Miko?” “She left to help the sick children in a village some ways away, near the Eastern Lands.” She hadn’t quite figured out how to word her concerns to her adopted father and he immediately picked up her nervousness. “What troubles you, Rin?” “Lady Kagome has been gone a long time, Sesshomaru-sama and I’m worried something bad has happened to her. She’s missing everything and it just isn’t like her.” “It is most unlike the Miko to shirk her previous commitments, however, healing the weak is a time consuming process, is it not?” “It is, but you know how accomplished Lady Kagome is in her talents. Besides, she wouldn’t miss her training or the preparations for my wedding. She made promises, Milord, and she never breaks a promise.” “This Sesshomaru will locate the Miko, Rin. Continue with your preparations.” She bowed low and watched him speed off on his youki cloud. She felt a little better. Sesshomaru-sama would definitely find her and bring her back safe. She skipped to Lady Kaede’s hut to announce the good news and the fact that she would be postponing her wedding until Lady Kagome could be here. Kohaku would understand. He knew how much the older woman meant to her. Sesshomaru cursed himself silently. His weakness to that little human girl would surely be the death of him, but he had never found it in him to deny her. His little ward had grown fond of the Miko and he would not stand for the woman upsetting Rin any further. She would be found and, finished with her task or not, would be dragged back to Edo to fulfill her promise to Rin. He had heard of a small village on the Eastern border that had lost some of their young recently. Perhaps that was the Miko’s destination. It didn’t matter that he was looking for the priestess; he would not debase himself to converse with common, filthy humans to obtain the information he needed. That’s why he had Jaken. He flared his aura and located the green kappa near the river. Jaken squawked in surprise when Sesshomaru landed a few feet behind him. Then he scrambled to grovel, throwing his staff on the ground as he hastily bowed. “You have returned, Milord. How can your humble, faithful servant be of assistance?” “Come, Jaken, we search for the Miko.” “Why would we be searching for that human wench?” Sesshomaru allotted him no answer, just walked away, knowing his retainer would sulk and follow just like he always did. He had to admit the shrill amphibian had his uses, but his complaints were grating on the nerves. He launched a rock at his retainer and smirked when it hit its mark. He never missed and it had been an effective way to silence the grumbling creature. The amusement never lost its luster after all these years. The stench of stale sickness and humans preceded the shouts of warning from the village they approached. That was the usual fair when it came to all mortal settlements. They all were the same in his view and varied little, but this one had the barely noticeable scent of the Miko. If he had been a less powerful demon, he wouldn’t have caught it, but he wasn’t. He was the Lord of the West. A small militia met him at the village entrance, brandishing flimsy weapons. Most of the puny human men’s hands shook and the air was rank with their fear. “What business do you have here, demon?” One of the men asked his voice wavering. Jaken rushed forward and slammed his Staff of Two Heads into the ground. “How dare you address Milord in such a disrespectful way, you disgusting human. You will show the Great Lord Sesshomaru the respect that he deserves and you will lower your pathetic weapons.” He shouted with pride and authority. There was a very audible, collective gasp from the group and a stunned silence as they decided to throw their weapons to the ground. They would have never been able to protect themselves or the rest of the village against him if he had wanted to destroy them. The area would have been demolished with one flick of his wrist. How these measly creatures made any progress on the evolutionary scale was baffling. A hunched old man pushed his way through the frozen crowd to approach the demons. He lowered his head in respect and leaned heavily on his walking stick. “Forgive me for not being able to bow properly, my Lord. These old bones are not as forgiving as they once were.” He wheezed a small chuckle and then coughed. “I would be most humbled to assist you in any way I can.” “This Sesshomaru seeks the Miko Kagome.” Sesshomaru said without acknowledging the elderly human before him. “Ah, yes, the sweet girl that saved our little ones. I’m afraid she is no longer here and her destination is unknown to me.” He bowed his head in apology. Sesshomaru walked forward and into the village. The frightened men gave him wide berth and fell over themselves to stay as far away from him as they could. His nose was to the air, sniffing. Her scent was weak, meaning she had been gone for some time. Perhaps his ward had been correct. The Miko should have been back in Edo by now. He passed rows of human bystanders, who came from their homes to gawk at the Taiyoukai. He ignored them until the whispers of one woman reached his pointed ears. “I told you she caused their deaths. You see, that stupid bitch was in league with demons. She’s a disgrace to her own kind. We should have killed her when we had the chance.” Before the woman could blink, Sesshomaru had his claws around her neck and she was dangling off the ground. The Miko’s scent was lightly intermingled with this woman’s horrid odor, particularly around the hideous bruising on her face. No doubt the work of his student. Kagome would have never harmed another human unless she was attacked, this he knew. The woman whimpered and he tightened his grip causing the woman’s eyes to widen to an unnatural circumference. “What have you done, wench?” Sesshomaru growled between clenched teeth. He was aware of the small group of bystanders that began to circle his person. They were all foolish and he would show them the consequences of their actions, but first, he needed answers. He allowed a small amount of poison to drip from his claws, which sizzled against the humans’ flesh. Her mouth opened in a silent scream and she began to thrash in his grip. “You will cease your futile struggles. This Sesshomaru will not repeat himself to a petulant louse. Speak.” He commanded, his voice dripping with the same venom as his claws. He loosened his grip just a fraction to allow the woman the ability to speak. She coughed, spraying spittle across his hand and he had to fight the urge to squeeze her head from her shoulders for her indecent and disgusting human fluids being forced on his person. He growled menacingly when she took too long to gain her composure and he seeped more venom onto the skin of her neck. She cried out, but through the tears, she stuttered to answer. “S-she caused m-my son t-to die. W-we j-just wanted t-to t-teach the l-little bitch a l-lesson.” Sesshomaru snarled when the weak aura of a human approached his flank. He moved his body to the side just as a dagger whooshed past him. The blade was buried to hilt in the stomach of the woman in his grasp. He dropped her like the worthless sack of meat she was and rounded on the offender. His eyes narrowed to slits and his arm shot out at a speed the human couldn’t register. He smirked satisfactorily when his claws ripped through the man’s jugular. He turned on his heels as the man grabbed his spurting wound, gurgling as he fell to his knees. The other humans were frightened by the display, but not deterred. He never gave them a chance to act. Sesshomaru summoned his poison whip and with lightning fast speed, ripped their lives from this plain. He walked casually away as their bodies began to slide apart and fall to the ground. The screams of the villagers were deafening to his superior hearing, but he had learned long ago to tune out such distractions. He had caught the Miko’s scent on the wind. It was faint, but was laced with blood, her blood. She was injured and he was silently pleased that he had terminated the lives of those who had harmed his pupil. “Jaken. We leave.” The kappa scurried as fast as his stubby legs would carry him and latched onto Sesshomaru’s Moko-Moko. Then they were gone in a blinding white sphere of pure youki, racing toward their new lead.
