Sesshoumaru noted the darkness that set in her brown eyes and waited. “My lessons” Kagome said baldly, “Are a nightmare.” He blinked. “There is too much. I didn’t agree to this Sesshoumaru”. “You agreed to assist me” he pointed out. She flushed a shade of rose that he supposed was only to be found on indignant humans. “You never said it would be like this!” Rin eyed the two verbal combatants over her rice. Her eyes wide as they moved from her beloved lord to Kagome. Sesshoumaru rose to his full height, “I am lord of the West, it could only be this way” he said plainly. He dropped a hand to Rin’s head, a careless pat and then turned and left the chambers. Kagome scrambled after him, not to obey mind you, but there was a certain demon lord who had an earful coming and she wasn’t about to let him off lightly. Her stocking feet carried her across the polished wood with a light thump thump thump. She was so intent on giving Sesshoumaru a rather large piece of her mind that she didn’t see that he had stopped and ran headlong into him. It was, she conceded, like colliding with a wall. She rubbed her nose and muttered small ows, and ouches before lifting watering eyes to the tall demon. “What’d you stop for?” she griped. Sesshoumaru paused before the massive double doors that led to his chambers. “have you been harmed, inured, offended?” he asked then. His cool gold gaze was a paradox to her, how could a hue so warm hold so much iciness? She blinked, swallowed and shook her head, staring at the floor. “I require an answer girl.” Her eyes snapped to his, fire and angry dancing in those velvety depths, “No.” she said succinctly, “I have not. And I am not a girl.” To her surprise that gold gaze moved from the top of her head to the toes of her socks that she was certain were all too humanly dirty for his liking. “When you act as a woman, I shall afford you the treatment of one” he said then. Kagome was working herself to a fine sputtering mess when he turned from her, “and when you cease dressing as a courtesan relegated to roadside tea shops, I shall treat you as a lady.” “Why you…” She’d clearly spent too much time in Inuyasha’s care. “Ladies do not spit, sputter or curse.” He coolly reminded. Kagome would later wonder what exactly had happened in the next few moments. Her vision had tinged red with anger and if she could have ‘sat’ Sesshoumaru, he’d have been replacing stone tiles for years. “Ladies!” she snapped, “Are not poked, prodded, and knuckle rapped with demon customs until they want to scream, when they are doing a favor to mister high and mighty stick up his ass, oh so pristine, perfect with pretty hair demon lord of the freaking West! Ladies help out of the kindness of their hearts and are thanked damn it!” Sesshoumaru stood emotionless in the face of her wrath. She’d even gone so far as to fist her little hands on her hips and stand toe to toe with him. Head tilted all the way back to glower and growl up at him. “And just how the heck tall are you anyway?” she grumbled. Sesshoumaru blinked at the sudden change from high pitched shouts to a mumbled question. He should punish her for speaking to him in such a manner. Yes. He would do that. He had the perfect punishment for her in mind. “Six feet, eight inches.” He said blandly, his eyes boring down on her from every millimeter of that distance. She gaped at him. “Not fair.” She grumped. “Irrelevant.” “You wish to cease your lessons?” “Yes”. Now she was getting somewhere. “You will assist with correspondence tomorrow then. I shall have it brought to you.” “Correspondence? Like letters?” “Like greetings to fellow lords, responses to invitations to court functions, decrees and the like.” She paled, “I don’t know how to do that.” “You should” he replied, “I gave you opportunity of lessons.” Kagome wanted to kick him in his so smart shin. “Fine.” “Hn. ” He walked away and entered his rooms, leaving Kagome feeling oddly deflated. “That didn’t go the way I planned” she admitted before turning back to Rin’s rooms. She’d bathe with the girl and settle for the night. How hard could correspondence be? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “This hard.” She sighed dejectedly when Anoa arrived at dawn the next morning followed by no less than ten servants. Each carried a tray stacked high with scrolls. Enoa waved them to the small desk near the window. “The lord has bid you see to these” Enoa told her with a slight bow as the servants left the room. “Wait! Enoa!” Kagome cried as she swung her legs over the edge of the bed, tugging a robe into place, “I don’t know how to do all of this.” Enoa looked her up and down through not unkindly, “Be that as it may, this is his command. Perhaps in future you would be wise not to irritate him. This is but a small punishment.” So much for asking for help, Kagome thought glumly. Then she too was gone, leaving Kagome a small tray of breakfast and a towering task before her. Kagome had sent about clearing the task. She managed to sort them into four piles. Social, requests, invitations, threats of war. Most of the social missives she was able to deal with. She took a little artistic license, adding a few of her personal touches here and there. Asking after the wellbeing of family and lands. Things a noble would probably say to a peer. Wouldn’t they? The requests made her grit her teeth. There were so many. Requests for funds, monies, land, soldiers, defense from a raiding demon faction. These were not easily dealt with. She had no idea how to answer them, she supposed Sesshoumaru would deny most of them, mostly the ones from humans. So much suffering. The words rolled through her mind over and over, the letters tattooing themselves to the backs of her eyelids. She let her head fall to the desk with a loud thunk. “Lady Kagome?” Enoa called from the doorway, a lacquered tray balanced on her hand, “Are you ill?” Kagome raised bleary eyes to the demoness in the door. “I can’t do it” she said softly. Enoa’s lips thinned slightly and then she stepped inside the room, setting the tray down on the low table and shutting the door behind her. Wordlessly she moved to where the human sat, and sank into the seat opposite her. Reaching a clawed hand across the table, she slid the scroll closer. “What is so hard about this?“ she asked, “Answer that the men will be sent.” Kagome blinked. “But Sesshoumaru should be asked, shouldn’t he?” “These are his lands, his people.” “But they are human. Sesshoumaru hates humans.” Enoa lifted a brow and sighed, “Is that right?” Kagome stared at the demoness for a long moment, “Are you trying to pick a fight?” she asked. Enoa pushed the scroll back to her and reached for another, “Haven’t you been expecting one since you arrived?” Kagome flinched. Touché. “I’m sorry” she said after several minutes, “You’re right. I expect everyone to be like him” “Him? Ahh Sesshoumaru? How would that be?” “Cold , aloof, stuck up, deadly, not nice at all.” Enoa hid her small smile behind her fan, “Just what his mother says.” Kagome lifted her eyes to the demoness, “What?” “Inu-Kimi” Enoa said then, “She often chides him for being no fun. But, like her he is so much that others fail to see.” Kagome cocked her head, “Enoa…. Are you in love with Sesshoumaru?” At this Enoa laughed outright, the sound a warm lovely peal that encouraged Kagome to smile back. “Oh” she said when her laughter subsided, “Oh… I love him beyond life but not as lovers. My devotion to the lord is not a tale for today.” Kagome blinked, opened her mouth to say more but Enoa was pushing a scroll to her, “Food will be sent”. Kagome duly noted it. “Funds will be sent with a trusted official and will not be delivered to the minor lord.” The brush moved against the scroll. Scratch, scratch, scratch. On and on, for hours. “No aid will be sent.” Kagome blinked and looked up in question. “Huh?” “This demon, this wolf, asks for aid but he doesn’t need it.” Kagome blinked again, “Who is he?” “The wolf prince of the East. Koga. Sesshoumaru tolerates him only because once saved Rin’s life.” Kagome’s head snapped up, “Koga needs help?” Enoa blinked now, her eyes large with surprise, “You know of this demon?” Kagome nodded, “Yeah, Inuyasha hates him. He kidnapped me once to help him fight a war with the birds of paradise and said I was his woman.” Enoa leaned closer, “He did?” “Yup” “What did you do?” “Slapped the hell out of him. No one owns me.” “You slapped prince Koga?” “Ohhh yeah. He’s not so back though.” “Does Sesshoumaru know he has claimed you?” “I don’t think its come up. Why?” “You should tell him. Now. Today.” “Erm, ok, why?” Kagome felt a sinking feeling in her stomach. One she knew only too well. Here comes the other shoe. “Koga arrives at sunset tomorrow according to this missive, to personally parlay for help.” Kagome let her eyes roll to the ceiling, “Just great.” “Hurry and finish these scrolls and I shall escort you to Lord Sesshoumaru’s offices” “Ok”. Did she have to? All the invitations were politely declined. The threats of war were set aside for Sesshoumaru, there were only three. It was late afternoon when the scrolls were finally finished. Kagome flexed her hand and groaned. Her hand was cramped and she knew she’d dream of missives for the next week. “Clever punishment” she muttered, rising and stretching the kink out of her back, “You just didn’t want to deal with those.” The point was well received; kagome would try to watch herself around the tricky demon again. She had no desire to undertake such a task again. She was wise enough to know that without Enoa’s help, she’d staring at the scrolls still. Enoa had left an hour ago, to procure proper court clothing for Kagome. Kagome had just gone to sit beside the pretty pond beyond her rooms when the door opened and Enoa entered followed by yet more maids. Each with an armful of colorful kimonos. “Lady Kagome” Enoa called, “Your wardrobe is complete.” Kagome rose and began sifting through the lovely garments. So many. She noticed that over the left breast of each one, woven carefully into the threads and colors was a small stitched butterfly. “Whats this?” “Ayame’s calling card” the demoness said with a smile, “Always says that aside for her lover only a woman’s seamstress should be close to her heart.” Kagome found herself smiling back. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
