Chapter 4:

The first light of dawn was met with silence across the village. A mat was moved away from a door and Kagome tip-toed out of the hut. She carried a towel and some bathing supplies. She turned her eyes to the rising sun for a moment before turning and walking toward the demon lord. She stopped a few steps away from him and bowed. She then continued past him into the trees. The demon lord did not move from his spot as she walked by. Kagome continued further into the trees until she came upon her favorite hot spring. Setting her clothes and bathing supplies next to the spring she began removing her clothes. She stopped half way through taking off her shirt when she heard a rustle in the bushes behind her.

“Kagome-sama?” Rin came through the bushes with a bundle of cloth in her arms and smiled shyly. “May Rin join you for a bath?” Kagome smiled at the girl and nodded. Rin smiled and ran forward to place her bundle next to Kagome’s things. Rin then untied her obi and slid out of her kimono before jumping into the spring. Kagome finished removing her clothes and followed the girl in.

“Rin is very happy that Kagome-sama is traveling with Sesshomaru-sama. Rin gets lonely sometimes with just Master Jaken to play with.” Kagome smiled at the girl.

“Well, we will just have to make sure that you are not left with only Master Jaken then won’t we? My son would probably love to play with you. Do you remember Shippo?” Rin nodded with a large grin on her face.

“Shippo has those sticks that make different colors appear on the paper.” Kagome giggled.

“They are called crayons.” Rin thought for a moment.

“Cra-yons?” Kagome nodded. A large grin spread across her face. Kagome reached for her shampoo.

“Let me wash your hair. This is called Shampoo and it smells really pretty.” Rin came closer and smelled the liquid Kagome poured into her hand.

“It smells like Oranges!!” Kagome nodded and began washing the girl’s hair with it. Suddenly a loud crash came from back toward the village. Kagome stilled her movements before continuing. Rin looked back toward the trees with a small frown on her face.

“That was Sesshomaru-sama… Is he fighting someone at the village?” Kagome’s face remained neutral has she worked the lather more into the girls hair.

“He is fighting with Inuyasha.” Rin nodded and remained quiet. Kagome finished washing her hair and began on her own.

“Dunk and rub your hair until it all comes out.” Rin took a deep breath and dunked under the water. Kagome quickly scrubbed her head with the shampoo. Rin came up from the water and smiled. Kagome dunked under and rinsed her hair too. When she came back up she reached for her conditioner.

“This is to make your hair really soft and shiny. Do you want to use some?” Rin nodded excitedly. “Hold your hand out.” Kagome put some into the girl’s out-stretched hand and then got some for herself as well.

“It smells like Oranges too Kagome-sama!” Kagome smiled at the child and nodded her agreement.

“It’s my favorite scent and it’s not too harsh for a demon’s sense of smell. Now you’re going to rub it into your hair really good.” Rin watched Kagome for a moment before mimicking her movements. Once it was rubbed in, they dunked under the water to rinse it all out.

When Kagome came back up Rin was already out of the water and drying with a plain piece of cloth. Kagome rung her hair out and stepped from the spring, grabbing her towel along the way. Another loud crash rang through the trees and both girls looked toward the sound. Kagome quickly dried off and began dressing. Rin was already dressed and waiting for her to finish. Kagome was pulling on her jeans when a voice was heard through the trees.

“Rin! Where are you? Rin!” Kagome looked toward the noise and quickly pulled her shirt over her head.

“She’s over here Master Jaken!” Jaken came running through the trees and stopped when he saw the hot spring and Rin standing next to Kagome who was sliding on her shoes.

“Rin, Miko-sama, please come with me.” Jaken motioned back toward the village. Kagome nodded and picked up her bathing supplies and Rin’s extra clothes before following them. When they came through the trees at the edge of the village she paused. Sesshomaru was standing and deflecting all of Inuyasha’s attacks. Inuyasha was going at him again and again. All around them there were deep scars in the earth, evidence of Inuyasha’s famous Wind Scar attack. Kagome continued toward the pair and stopped a good distance away to watch. If she was not going to stop Sesshomaru then she was going to witness the consequences of her choices first hand.

“Miko-sama, we should move away from them.” Kagome looked down at the toad demon and smiled dryly at him.

“Thank you Master Jaken but this is one fight I must witness until the end. Please take Rin to Kaede’s hut so she is safe.” Jaken looked toward his lord and nodded. He reached up and took the bundle of clothes from Kagome before ushering the young girl away from the scene. Kagome turned her attention once more to the battle taking place. Sesshomaru glanced toward the hut as Rin was taken inside and then once to Kagome.

She raised her left hand and held it close to her chest as the scene continued to unfold. Inuyasha caught sight of her and snarled, changing his attack direction to include her.

“Wind Scar!” Inuyasha let the attack go and Kagome didn’t once look away from Sesshomaru as time seemed to slow down. Sesshomaru looked once from the hanyou to the tenshi and began to move to intercept the blast. Sesshomaru placed himself between the attack and Kagome with his back facing Inuyasha, his arms slightly encircling her. Kagome placed her hand on his chest and breathed power into and through him to create a barrier around them just as the Wind Scar collided with it and sailed over their heads. Sesshomaru raised his brow in question.

“You protect me and I will do everything I can to protect you in return.” Sesshomaru turned to face the hanyou with an impassive face.

“So now you’re protecting her? Let me tell you something Sesshomaru, she isn’t worth your time. She is just a worthless human, not even very skilled or powerful.” Sesshomaru drew Bakusaiga and stepped to the side.

“Take a good look hanyou. She is no longer human. A tenshi was within your grasp and you didn’t even know it. Pathetic.” Inuyasha’s face looked stunned as he studied the difference in Kagome’s appearance. Sesshomaru took his first swing of the battle and was barely stopped by Tetsusaiga as Inuyasha came out of his stupor. Sesshomaru swung again to be barely stopped by Inuyasha a second time. Sesshomaru attacked one after another until they locked blades.

Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes at the pup before he pushed further into the blade and then pushed it out to the side. Sesshomaru’s blade slid deep into Inuyasha’s shoulder before he could recover. Inuyasha screamed as the blade cut to the bone. Sesshomaru withdrew his sword and stepped back to watch. The blade’s properties were starting to take effect as the flesh around the wound started to break apart. Inuyasha howled and glared at Kagome. His eyes became red and two gagged stripes appeared on his cheeks, the demon blood taking over in an attempt to save his life.

Inuyasha charged toward Kagome and was stopped a few moments later by Sesshomaru’s hand on the back of his neck dropping him to the ground. He pressed his head deep into the ground as Inuyasha thrashed against him. Kagome walked closer to the two of them as Inuyasha’s struggles began to stop. When Inuyasha was lying still you could see his right shoulder and arm were completely gone from Sesshomaru’s Bakusaiga. The damage was slowly inching closer to his heart. Kagome knelt down next to Inuyasha with tears in her eyes.

“Why, Kagome?” Kagome reached her hand toward him and stopped. She slowly pulled her hand back from his body and held it close to her chest. Sesshomaru’s mark stood out like the sun at dawn.

“It was my choice not to stop Sesshomaru. I did not stop him because I believed that you deserved everything you were getting after what you have done to me and the others.” Inuyasha closed his eyes and a single tear fell onto the grass beneath his head. “I do not regret my choice but I will take responsibility for it. Your death is my fault. I will see that your body is properly taken care of.” Kagome sat and watched the sun finish rising over the hills as Inuyasha died right next to her. The tears gathered in her eyes fell as he drew his last breath and landed hotly on the hands she kept cradled in her lap.

“Sesshomaru-sama, can you please give me a moment to properly tend to his body.” Sesshomaru stood and walked a small distance away and watched. Kagome gently placed a hand on the back of Inuyasha’s head and whispered into the morning air.

“Not one of the past,
One but of the present.
Your death on my hands
Your life within my power.
I grant to you peace at last
Your soul to be taken into my care
To a place of beauty
To a life of peace.
Your suffering shall be forever ended
Your life forever remembered.
Be at peace.”

Inuyasha’s body began to glow a soft white as she spoke. His body then burned bright white and when the light cleared his body was gone. Kagome’s hand rested on the ground where his body had been and smiled sadly to herself. Sesshomaru watched as she rose and looked once more to the sun before making her way back toward the village. She paused once and looked back at him.

“Thank you for protecting me.” Kagome then turned and walked toward the hut. Sesshomaru could still smell her tears.

“Tell me tenshi, do you regret your choice.” Kagome didn’t stop or look back at him. Sesshomaru let her go as he looked once more toward where his brother’s body had just laid. The spot was covered in Lily flowers, marking the passing of the hanyou. Sesshomaru smirked to himself at her foolishness before following the woman toward the hut where the others awaited news of the battle.
