(( Alright folks, hang on to your britches. I've decided that this story may possibly turn out to be long as tits. So, hang in there a little longer and we shall get to the exciting parts. ))
“Ryu! Yuuaa! Akemi! Wake up!”I would wake the girls up every morning when sun broke above the mountains, sometimes earlier depending on the day’s chores. Akemi sat up quickly and glanced around with dazed eyes. Ryuumiu and Yuuaa where curled up together, both snoring. Akemi punched her sister in the upper arm. That got the girl up. Soon the two where lazily punching each other and trading half-hearted insults while the youngest girl snored on. Only when Akemi elbowed Ryuumiu in the head did the girl slowly rise. Actually, she rolled out of bed and stood up with her eyes half-open. I untangled the twins and Ryuumiu dragged herself out of the room, rubbing her eyes. I sometimes wondered how it was possible for a person with even the smallest bit of demon blood could be so dead to the world. The slightest noise of scent would rouse Inuyasha.
“Good morning! “
I greeted them cheerfully. Ryuumiu grunted something on her way out of the room. My hands separated the two girls still battling in the bed. Yuuaa and Akemi never really got along. A squeak and a loud thump could be heard in the next room followed by a round of barking from the pups Kouga had brought. I made my way out of the small bedroom and stepped over the small dog pile on the floor. Ryuumiu’s eyes where now wide open and she was pushing the two boys off of her. I sat beside Kouga and his two children around the fire, watching the tangled mass a few feet away.
“Puppies!”
My daughter squealed, forgetting about the two boys next to her. Five wagging pups where in her lap; licking, barking, and wagging crazily. Kouga’s twin boys were talking to her in loud voices.
“We brought you a present! “
“For your birthday! Father said you can pick one! “
Ryuumiu looked from one boy to the other in wonder. The taller boy with the long black braid and sky blue eyes put his forehead against her head and playfully growled at her. The shorter one had long black hair too, but his was tied at the base of his neck, his eyes almost silver in coloring. He also offered her a challenging growl. Kouga spoke up from his seat by the fire,
“Easy boys, she just woke up. “
Zukimu and Moriko backed up a little, and Ryuumiu grinned at Kouga,
“Oji, can I really have one? “
“Yeah, your mother said it was fine. So, knock yourself out. “
Ryuumiu looked back down to her lap in awe and I smiled to myself. She loved animals to the point of it being odd. At the tender age of two, she refused to eat meat ever again. She stated very firmly to us that she would no longer be partaking in the ingestion of animals, and that she would only eat meat if it was human. Needless to say, I was horrified. Ryuumiu had never eaten a person, but if the opportunity ever presented itself, I had no doubt that she would. She caught fish in the morning and laid them out on the edge of the forest. She took care of the horses, she talked to the pigs. The only animal she was ever allowed to keep was her cat, Neko. And he was so fat and lazy that he barely came out of her bedroom. I decided to allow her to have a wolf, for some odd reason.
She looked as if she had no idea which one to pick. Inuyasha was beside her, telling her that she would be the one taking care of it, not him. Soon, the other children of the house where crowding around her. The black pup with the golden eyes was the only pup that managed to climb up her shirt. Ryuumiu picked it up and held it in front of her face. It was a boy, and his fur was like bushy silk. The wolf’s eyes where a dark molten gold and his left ear had a slight hole on the edge; it looked to have been gnawed off.
“This one. Kuritsuki. “
She said with a toothy smile. I smiled at Kouga, who had his young daughter on his lap. She was two, and looked almost identical to her mother. The girl had red hair, teal eyes, pale skin, and a small heart-shaped face. His oldest son sat beside him with his arms crossed. Okukaze had tanned skin and blue eyes like his father, but his long red hair was all Ayame. He was a quiet boy with a serious demeanor, just a year older than the twin wolf pups. Like Kachio, he was calculative. That was where the similarities ended. This boy was much too serious, almost angry in a way. Kouga nudged me out of my daze and I snapped to,
“Thank you so much Kouga, you have no idea how much this means to her. “
Ryuumiu was on the ground with the boys, the black tail that was supposed to be tucked into her shorts was peeking out. The girl was on all fours, wrestling the boys with sharp black claws and long pointy teeth.

I loved it when they came over because nobody besides father would play with me like that. My brother was far too ‘sophisticated ‘ to get on the ground, and the other kids didn’t have teeth. Zukimu pounced on me and held me down with his body weight, and Moriko tugged at the tail that was slowly slipping out of my shorts. Kuritsuki was barking and nipping at anything that came near his mouth, and the other pups where trying to jump on us. Father walked towards mother and held her in a tight embrace.
“So, you just came here to brighten my daughter’s day up? Or was there something else? “
The group around the fire grew silent as Kouga’s face gradually fell. I could sense the slight tension in the air, and I remember listening to them talk as I played. Kachio gave up on trying to be mature and watch the us carouse on the ground before him. He dropped on all fours and jumped into the fray. Yuuaa and Akemi sat against the wall and tried to ignore the us as they helped each other tie on armor pads.
“No… there’s something going on… “
Kouga pulled at his hair anxiously. Okukaze spoke up,
“It’s the Shika lord of the East. Karumiru. “
“Yes, him… he sent me a letter five days ago, requesting my presence at a gathering. Demons don’t usually gather unless somebody is planning something… Wolves and deer don’t usually communicate in the first place. So, I knew something was wrong with the picture… “
He trailed off again and held his daughter closer. She didn’t have a name yet. The wolf demons didn’t usually name their pups until the third year..
“We where scouting around the border of his lands. We couldn’t gain entry because there was a very strong barrier surrounding it. A miko barrier. But, we did happen to see a few ningen running through the trees. Naked. “
Okukaze idly brushed off his shoulder as if there was a layer of dust, but I caught the casual glace he threw towards us.
“A few ningen have disappeared from villages on my lands. It may be nothing to be concerned with, but I was wondering if I could count on you to back me up if it comes to anything serious. “
“Of course Kouga. That shouldn’t even be a question. “
Mother grabbed Kachio by the arm when he darted beside her. She pulled him up to her and began combing his hair with her fingers, fingering the singular long black streak disrupting the steady flow of white in his silky hair.
“Take the other children and go outside. “
She said to him softly, kissing him on the cheek when he bowed respectfully and grabbed his me by the tail,
“C’mon. “
I yelped and swatted his hands away. I crawled to Kuritsuki and scooped him up,standing and waiting for the others to follw. Both sets of twins Kachio outside, a pack of pups casing their ankles. Okukaze stood up and bowed to mother, father, and Kouga. He walked out after the, his long russet tail wagging mildly behind him.
I ran into the river, screaming with joy as I chased big brother. I used to love days like that, carefree with no training. I loved her training because I got to destroy things and feel powerful, but sometimes I just wanted to play tag like a normal kid. And my family was anything but normal. That was apparent when I realized one day that the other children in the village didn’t have tails. I knew this because on hot days, the children of the village stripped down and splashed in the water. When asked if they had their appendages cut off like her father, they looked at me like she I crazy. When I presented my own fluffy black tail to them, they immediately ostracized me. They pelted river rocks at me and called me a ‘half-breed’, which was crazy in itself. Didn’t they know that I was a quarter demon? When I ran to my brother minutes after the incident, he went and got his spear. We went down to the river and Kachio swung his spear around and promptly told them all to leave his family alone under threat of death. That had been the last time I’d really talked to anybody outside of the family, Kaede, and a few of the other village adults. I jumped on my brother’s back with a howl, Yuuaa grabbing onto his legs from behind.
“Alright, get off. I just want to swim. “
Kachio said sternly. Yuuaa was the first to let go, skipping back to the shore where Zukimu was. I slid down my sibling’s back and splashed water in his face, just to get the last word in before I joined my cousin on the grass. I flopped down in-between the young wolf and the older girl.
“Where’s Akemi?”
I got a shrug from Yuuaa in response. The human flipped her long brown hair over her shoulder and rolled onto her stomach, putting a long piece of grass in-between her teeth.
“What do you suppose your parents were talking to Kouga about? “
Kuritsuki bounded over to them, sniffing Zukimu’s hand before I scooped him up and placed him in my lap.
“They were saying something about the stag lord. “
I replied.
“Yeah, I never met him but I hear things. “
Zukimu interjected. He rolled into his side and presented a dandelion to me, and I ate it much to his amusement.
“Like what?”
“Like how he woos human women. I heard that he impregnates them, and then eats the offspring. He uses the baby skin and makes robes out of them, and he wears them around. He sacrifices actual deer to please his gods. “
I was haoorified by that last part. Then, my frown vanished,
“You’re lying, a demon would never harm its beast brethren. “
I growled and hopped on top of the wolf boy, my knees planted on his chest and belly.
“I’m not lying. It’s what i heard. “
Zukimu’s silver eyes lit up with a smile. I rolled off of him and instead curled up next to Yuuaa.
“Well, if I ever meet him, I’ll stab him in the eyeball aaallllll the way to his brain. “
I said, making a show of it with my finger. Yuuaa scrunched her nose up at the me and flicked my cheek,
“ You’re dumb, the only way to kill a demon like that is to get close to him, then kill him in his sleep. “
“I’m not dumb, you’re dumb. That’s a lot to do for just killing somebody. “
“You’re both wrong. Just walk in, declare a fight, and chop his head off. “
Two shadows appeared above us, blocking out the harsh sun. I squinted up and met Moriko’s clear blue eyes.
“From the way that barrier was up, and those naked ningen, I’d say he’s making them fight to the death. I mean, that’s what I would do. “
Said Moiko.
Akemi sat down next to her sister and tightened the white bandanna on her charred head,
“I guess we’ll just have to see when your father comes back and tells us. “
Her voice was flat, but carried an air of seriousness. Her blue eyes where cool when she looked at me cousin,
“And it may not be any of our business, so just stop talking about it. “
Moriko slid down between his twin and myself, wrapping his arms around us both.
“War! Anarchy! We shall wield both like the sword and spear. Victory will be easy, and sweet. “
Zukimu pushed his brother away with a growl. A listless voice interrupted us all,
“You really shouldn’t be eavesdropping on conversations like that. “
Okukaze was lower on the hill, in-between the lounging line of children and the water in which Kachio was drifting in. One hand was on his hip and the other behind his back.
“Oi, don’t act like you’re a grown up just cause you’re a little older. “
Yuuaa called to him. Okukaze flipped his red ponytail off of his shoulder and said nothing. The four pups that came with them where sitting at his feet, looking at us with excited stares.
“It ain’t a big deal anyways, we need to know this stuff in case we have to go and fight him. “
I was holding my mouth in a stubborn line. Okukaze stared at me for a moment, and then motioned his head to the side, indicating for me to follow him. I looked at his brothers, both of them not looking too concerned. Yuuaa, however, smiled knowingly at me and tugged at her sister’s hand.
“Let’s swim. “
Was the command she used to distract the other children from the seriousness of Okukaze’s silent request. Akemi followed Yuuaa, and so did the other two demons. They made fast work of jumping into the crystal river.
I looked at the children in the river, then back to the older wolf demon. Why did he always want to talk to me privately? It’s not that I minded or anything, because I knew he was shy in front of others. But still, it wasn’t that hard to speak your thoughts aloud in front of more than one person. Oh well. I got up and set my pup down, whistling to him when he didn’t immediately follow. The little black wolf perked up and ran after the us. Once we were away from demon ear-shot of the river, his shoulders relaxed and he brought his hand out from behind his back,
“Here, Happy birthday.”
He mumbled. I took the long wooden thing from his hands.
“What is it?”
“It’s a flute. Blow into the hole. “
I blew hard, and a shrill melodical whistle came out of the end that made me jump.
“Blow softly. “
His serious mouth softened into a small smile. I did as instructed, and a more pleasant sound came out.
“Cool! Thank you! But, you know, my birthday isn’t for a few days.”
“I know, I just don’t know when I’ll see you again. “
He fidgeted for a second, and we both halted as he struggled to say something. I cocked a thickly well-formed eyebrow at him and he looked at the ground. Kuritsuki ran into my leg.
“You don’t have to fight him. The stag demon. “
I looked blankly at him and blew on the flute in response.
“I mean, if we have to fight him, I’ll protect you. You won’t have to fight, because I’ll fight for you. “
He said quickly. I brought the instrument away from my mouth. My lips spread in a toothy grin, the right front tooth absent from my gums.
“Well, of course I’ll have to kill him. Cause I gotta protect you and everybody else. “
I said it as if it where the most obvious thing on earth. And it was, to me atleast. With that said, I began walking the way we came, Okukaze following close at her me with the other four pups close at his’.
“No, cause a real demon is supposed to protect his mate, and you’re going to be my mate. “
I laughed and grabbed his hand, smiling,
“Nooo, I can’t be your mate. Cause I’m going to pick my mate, and he’s going to be the strongest demon in the world. And I’m going to kill the stag lord to protect him, cause I’m going to be stronger than him. Which will make me the strongest demon in the universe. “
“But you’re not a demon.”
“Sure I am. I’m not human. “
“You’re more human than demon. “
“Not if I don’t feel it. I feel like a demon, so I am a demon. And I’m going to be the best. “
Okukaze seemed to consider this for a moment.
“Okay, but if I become stronger, you have to mate me. “
“ Deal. “
“By the way, ain’t isn’t a word.”
“It is if I want it to be.”
“Whatever you say.”
His smile stretched from ear to ear, his blue eyes alight with victory. I wasn’t aware of how serious he took my five-year-old promise. But, I guess to him, we had a deal. He may act like an adult around other grown-ups, but he was still a child. The fantasies of a child paired with the seriousness of an adult is never a good combination. And everybody knows that life doesn’t always go according to the original plan; everybody except for children, of course. And as I look back on the things that happened, I should have seen everything coming. The signs where all there, even from early childhood.
