AN: I know I kind of stopped at a weird place last chapter, but it is hard for me to write battle scenes. The action happens so fast but to describe it… * shakes head * it’s very difficult. This next chapter will be the middle part of the battle and a summary of the end, since you know how the end happened. I hope it doesn’t come out too crappy.
Kagome gasped in horror. His body was enormous and formed of every kind of demon. Only his torso and head remained the same. Her eyes moved from one demon part to the next. The different bodies were fused together somehow. Everything in her cried out to destroy the abomination before her.“So, have you found Kagura or Kanna yet?” Naraku chuckled as the miko paled seeing him revealed. Her horror filled eyes met his. Naraku’s tentacles were sparring with Kouga and Inuyasha.
When Kagome shook her head he pointed to one side. “Do you see this red piece of flesh? That’s Kagura. This white one, here, is Kanna.” Naraku pointed to an area near his ‘hip’.
Anger flared through the miko’s eyes. “You are an abomination! You never should have existed and now, here today, you will be destroyed!”
“Ooo! Fiesty, I like that!” Naruka said. “Maybe I’ll let you live after this just to have a little fun.”
“That’s my woman you’re talking about!” Kouga yelled as he foolishly leapt for Naraku’s upper body. A nest of tentacles shot up and wrapped around his chest, constricting. Kouga’s arms were pinned and his legs useless as he struggled to get free.
Laughing, Naraku tightened his tentacles, savoring the feel and sound of Kouga’s ribs cracking under the pressure. Naraku moved another tentacle up and removed Kouga’s shards from his legs in a vicious slashing motion.
“NO!!!” Kagome screamed firing two arrows into the mass around the wolf demon. The tentacles dissolved dropping Kouga’s unconscious form. Hakkaku and Ginta leapt forward and caught their prince. The good lined up surrounding Naraku ready to fight him.
“Surely you don’t think I’m by myself? Even without my detachments, I have others to do my bidding.” Naraku merged Kouga’s pieces of the shard with his almost completed jewel as thousands of lower level demons swarmed down to him. Kohaku slowly stepped up beside the monstrosity of Naraku’s body.
“Kohaku!” Sango screamed as Miroku held her back.
Each side rushed forward, locking into an almost epic battle. Kagome lost track of everyone only catching fleeting glimpses of her friends as they battled. Kagome was firing her arrows as fast as she could. Shippou was retrieving them from the ashes of the defeated since he wasn’t strong enough to damage any demons present.
Sango was on Kirara fighting the flying demons. She held back her tears as she watched her brother begin to decimate Kouga’s tribe.
Inuyasha was unleashing his wound of the wind repeatedly. It quickly cut down the demons leaving only a few for everyone else to clean up.
Naraku hissed in pain as one of the miko’s arrows managed to hit more than a tentacle. Inuyasha leapt forward to take advantage of his distraction. Naraku cackled gleefully as his tentacle thrust through the hanyou’s chest. He flung him off like a person shaking crap off their shoe. One major player down.
Kagome cried out and poured her anger and sorrow into her next arrow. It hit Naraku in the chest almost exactly where he’d pierced Inuyasha’s. The irony was not lost on him. His skin began to blacken and crumble as the miko’s powers took effect.
Naraku reached down and plucked Kohaku from the battle. He quickly retrieved the boy’s shard and placed it in his wound with the rest of the jewel. Tossing the boy’s lifeless form to one side he felt his power double. Laughing, Naraku shot out new tentacles to replace his minions in battle.
Sango paused hearing Naraku’s laughter looked down from the sky. She saw Naraku heal his chest and form more tentacles. She gasped when her eyes saw her brother’s lifeless form lying in an ungainly heap near Naraku. “NOOOO!!!! KOHAKU!!!!”
Growling, Sango went wild, using both sword and bone boomerang, she quickly finished off all the rest of the flying demons. Landing Kirara, she jumped off and began to hack and slash through the mass of tentacles that was Naraku’s base. Silent tears ran down her face. She never noticed.
Kagome dodged another attack of Naraku’s tentacles. Shippou gave her five more arrows and leapt off to retrieve more. Kouga appeared beside her briefly knocking away a tentacle she hadn’t even seen.
Inuyasha was still unconscious and bleeding. Kagome leapt over his prone form. There was nothing she could do while the battle waged on. She could only hope his stubborn will to live would keep him from passing on. Kagome ended up back to back with Miroku as they continued to dodge and fight off Naraku’s tentacles.
“Lady Kagome, this isn’t doing any good. We must attack his upper body. These tentacles just keep multiplying endlessly.”
“Hai. But how? I only got one arrow through his guard and he healed it. Only a demon or someone who could fly could get up there.” Miroku and Kagome dodged in different directions as a tentacle landed where they had been.
Shippou gave Kagome ten more arrows and ran off to Miroku. He’d heard their conversation. He may be small, but he could fly. “Miroku, give me some of your sutras. I’ll fly them up and put them on Naraku. Activate them as soon as I put the first on.”
“But, Shippou, if you are touching one…” Miroku protested.
“I know, but he has to be stopped.” Shippou said with wisdom beyond his years.
“Very well.” Miroku replied honoring the kitsune’s request. He handed Shippou over twenty of his fuda’s and prayed for the kitsune’s success and life.
Shippou transformed and slowly rose in the air. He angled so he was coming in behind Naraku. The papers were clasped tightly in his tiny pink balloon hand. He was getting close. He held his breath hoping this worked.
Kouga stumbled as his legs were yanked out from under him. Tentacles underground? He tore free but a second too late. Those underground tentacles shot up imprisoning him. He had a few cracks he could see through, but not any wide enough to grip so he could break free.
Hakkaku and Ginta were fighting back to back nearby. Kouga’s real wolves, not the demons, came over and began to alternately dig and gnaw on the tentacles to free their prince. Kouga watched helplessly as Kagome was running more than fighting. Inuyasha was still out of it.
Kouga blinked in surprise. What the hell was the pup trying to do? Kouga watched silently as the kitsune’s odd shape maneuvered behind Naraku’s unsuspecting form. What was the pup holding? It looked like the monk’s fuda’s.
Looking around, Kouga finally located the houshi. The monk was watching Shippou’s progress waiting. Kouga started to turn back when he saw it. “LOOK OUT MONK!!!” He yelled, too late.
Miroku was locked in a battle with a minor oni. The demon managed to break one of Miroku’s arms before Miroku was able to throw him off. He glanced up trying to locate Shippou to see if it was time. Where was he? The small pink balloon was nowhere to be seen.
Miroku turned back to finish off the oni that had lost him his one chance to eliminate Naraku. He lost it, repeatedly slamming his staff into the oni’s skull. All his anger and frustration came out in the blows. He finally stopped when he realized the oni’s head was literally smashed in. Panting heavily he circled the battlefield searching for the kitsune. He was slammed into the ground by a large tentacle. It rendered him unconscious.
Kagome panted heavily as she barely dodged another blow. If this kept up, she wouldn’t make it through the battle. Kagome hesitated when she came face to face with that one soul that had lingered. Looking down, she saw the trampled remains of Kikyo’s clay form.
She knew instinctively that it was the part of her Kikyo had retained. Somehow, she really didn’t want it back. Not after it had inhabited Kikyo’s bitter form absorbing her hatred and feelings of betrayal.
Kagome shrieked as pain flared in her side and she was picked up. Looking down she saw a small tentacle had pierced through her. Kagome whimpered as Naraku reached down and claimed the last jewel fragments. It was over. They had lost. Tears formed in her eyes but didn’t fall.
“No! It can’t end like this. I won’t let it!” Kagome said as she reached deep inside unlocking all her miko power. Her aura flared and she sent it into the demon holding her. His skin blackened and began to dissolve.
Kagome bit her lip when Naraku pitted his evil aura against her pure one. Sweat formed on her brow and her body began to shake with the effort. She wasn’t strong enough. She was aware of yells and battle cries, but her focus was on maintaining her ground. Suddenly all of Naraku’s resistance was gone. Her power roared over him, purifying the evil taint left behind.
Kagome was vaguely aware of her powers healing Inuyasha and Kouga’s wounds. Darkness was descending upon her. She was sooo tired. That fragment of soul hovered above her. As it slowly eased into her body a purple glow began to form around her. Just before her eyes closed, she saw Kouga lunging to save her from the darkness.
* Present Day *
Kouga snuck into the well house and sat beside the old dry well. He still found it hard to believe this was Kagome’s transportation to and from his time. He looked at his watch. In just a few hours, he would finally know. As he leaned his head back he was swamped with memories of the battle and afterwards.
* Flash Back *
Kouga ran frantically around the battlefield knowing she was gone but still searching the area for her. Ginta and Hakkaku tried to stop him as they ran beside him. Kouga finally collapsed as his grief overwhelmed him. “Not this way. It wasn’t supposed to happen this way.” He muttered.
Sango had retrieved her comrades and was bandaging their wounds. She kept looking worriedly over at Kouga. Grief-stricken demons are very unstable. He could snap at any moment. She had never realized until now just how much the wolf had loved her friend. She had thought it was all to get a rise out of Inuyasha.
Sighing, Sango wiped her face and went back to bandaging Miroku’s side. She knew she’d seen the hanyou get pierced through the chest, but other than a pink shiny scar, there were no injuries on him. He was still unconscious.
Miroku had several nasty gashes and a few broken ribs to go with his broken arm. She was grateful he was unconscious since she had to set his arm before placing it in a splint. She looked everywhere, but couldn’t find Shippou. Had he been killed? Kirara was digging graves for the dead right now.
Kouga rocked back and forth still mumbling. His pack had finished tending their wounded and had helped bury all the dead. Hakkaku and Ginta placed Kouga on an improvised stretcher. Each taking an end they began the journey to their mountain home.
Inuyasha, Sango, Miroku, and Kirara watched the tribe go. Turning, they slowly made their way back to Kaede’s village. Everyone had lost today.
* Jump Forward a Few Weeks *
Kouga sat in the corner of his den. A tray of food rested nearby, untouched. His nose twitched, as he smelled Inuyasha. No other reaction appeared. He heard his lieutenants try to stop the hanyou, but they were unsuccessful.
Inuyasha walked forward and sat before Kouga’s unfocused eyes. He reached in his hori and pulled out a small package. Kouga’s nose twitched and his eyes slowly focused on what Inuyasha was holding.
“I thought you might like to have this. The well no longer works. You were unaware of this, but Kagome is from the future. About four hundred years to be exact. She lives at a shrine by the bone eaters well.”
Inuyasha sighed. He couldn’t tell if Kouga was even listening. It really hurt to see a great ally fall into such a state. “If you don’t take care of yourself and live, how are you going to meet her in the future?” Inuyasha asked angrily. Why wasn’t he responding?
“Future?” Hakkaku whispered from the den entrance. Inuyasha turned. At least those two were listening.
“Yeah, future. Whenever Kagome would go through the well a purple light would form around her taking her through time, either here or to hers. It was the same light that made her vanish. We, me, Sango, and Miroku, all think she was pulled back into her time now that her duty has been fulfilled. Since the well has quit working, I can’t check to make sure she’s there.”
Inuyasha turned back to face Kouga. “If you can survive that long, maybe you’ll find out if she made it.” The hanyou thrust the bundle into Kouga’s unresisting lap and stood. “Ja ne.” He left. There was nothing more he could do.
Hakkaku and Ginta watched the hanyou leap off. Hearing a rustle they turned around. Kouga was lightly rubbing his fingers over the dark blue book Inuyasha had left with him. They could easily smell Kagome’s scent saturating it. They turned and walked out giving their prince privacy.
Kouga slowly opened the book. Written neatly inside was Kagome’s full name and address. Flipping the page he saw a date followed by ‘Dear Diary, Normally, I would laugh at someone who kept a diary, but lately my life has been so wild I need one just to keep my head straight. Three weeks ago, I was sucked into the old dry well on the shrine…’ Kouga sighed softly and closed the book when he finished reading it.
Kouga lifted his head and howled out his sorrow. His entire pack echoed his cries of anguish but they were happy on the inside. He had finally accepted his loss. Now he was ready to move on and face the world.
* Present Day *
Kouga sighed and stroked his hand over the fragile book. It had been through a lot. It had saved him as well. Just having this small piece of Kagome had made it possible for him to survive. He also stroked over the thick red book he’d brought as well. It was his diary from the day he met her as a child in kindergarten.
Kouga’s nose crinkled. Magic was in the air. Leaping up he looked down and froze in horror. It was the same light that had removed Kagome from his side. Was she okay? Was she even here? He scented the air but couldn’t smell anything other than the magic.
Kouga growled his frustration. Had the damn light glowed this long when it had claimed her? The growl ceased. He could smell Kagome and fresh blood but couldn’t see her, yet. The light slowly vanished leaving Kagome’s inert form on the bottom of the well.
Kouga leapt down and checked her for injuries. Other than the hole in her side she appeared fine, but unconscious. Kouga scooped her up and leapt towards the shrine, calling for Kagome’s mother.
Mrs. Higurashi stumbled out of the house hearing her name being yelled frantically. Seeing her daughter’s bloodied form she fell to her knees. “Mrs. Higurashi, we have to get her to the hospital. She’s alive but has a lot of blood loss.” Kouga said.
“Hai.” Kouga watched as she ran inside to get her keys and purse. “Hold on, Kagome-chan. Please, hold on.” They quickly got in the car. Kagome’s mom drove while Kouga cradled Kagome to his body crooning softly to her.
“Your disguise is slipping a bit, dear.” Said Mrs. Higurashi as she watched Kouga’s form waver a few times. “I take it you aren’t really Houjou-kun?” Kagome was breathing evenly and showed no signs of distress or pain so Kagome’s mom assumed the injury looked worse than it was. Houjou, on the other hand needed to be distracted.
“No. I’m Kouga, prince of the wolf tribe.” Kouga said as he stroked his hand over Kagome’s face, tracing her features.
“I see. And just how did you become acquainted with my daughter?”
“We met back in Sengoku Jedai. I was going to declare myself after the big battle, but Kagome-chan vanished from the battlefield immediately after destroying Naraku.”
“I see. Does she return your feelings? Four hundred years is a long time to wait on hope.”
“Hope is all that has gotten me this far.” Kouga answered as they pulled up to the emergency room entrance.
