Dinner with the Higurashi's that night was a rather boisterous affair. Even jii-chan was in high spirits as InuYasha joined them for the evening meal. Kagome tried not to blush too thoroughly as Souta recounted the details of the night InuYasha had arrived, and the hanyou tried not to be too embarrassed about Kagome and her mother having seen him naked.
Once the meal was finished, Kagome retired to her room to get some real studying done, and InuYasha followed her. When she finally grew tired, she closed her book and was surprised to realize that she hadn't once had to scold InuYasha for bothering her. She looked towards the bed and was able to see just how that had happened for herself as she found that InuYasha was sleeping soundly.
She was temped to take up her usual place beside him, but in the end, couldn't quite bring herself to do so. It was one thing to share her bed with him when he was unconscious and on the verge of death, but quite another to do so when he was more or less back to his old self.
She sighed softly and pulled the spare futon out of her closet. Surely he wouldn't mind her sleeping beside him, especially after the most recent development in their relationship. But even as she tried to convince herself, she knew she wouldn't go through with it, so she finished laying out the futon and set her alarm before settling in to sleep.

She awoke the next morning not only to the ringing of the alarm, but also to the dulcet tones of her hanyou. "Shut that damn thing up, already!"
Kagome sat up and let her hand fall over the alarm, silencing it. "Good morning to you, too."
He snorted, but didn't sit up.
Kagome rose from the futon and stretched. It had been a rare treat to spend so many nights in her own bed at one time, but because of that the firmer mattress of the futon had caused her back to feel quite stiff.
"Oi, you didn't have to sleep on the floor," InuYasha said as he watched her wince. "You should have woken me up."
Kagome just smiled and shook her head. "I don't mind really, and you need to rest more than I do."
InuYasha frowned, but didn't say anything else and she wondered if maybe he was disappointed that she hadn't joined him in her bed.
"Well, I had better start getting ready for school," she announced. "Unless... unless you think you might need me here."
"Keh, go already," InuYasha replied.
Kagome bit her lip. Was he upset with her? Usually he hated that she went school, but now he was encouraging her to go when he was hurt and when she might be in danger besides. She fought desperately to keep her tears at bay, but one betrayed her, and of course InuYasha noticed it before she could wipe it away.
He sat up and looked at her. "What's the matter with you?"
"Nothing. It's nothing," she replied, pulling a clean uniform out of her closet.
Before she could turn around he was behind her, pulling her around to face him. "If it was nothing you wouldn't be blubbering about it."
She looked up at him and cursed herself for not being able to look past his lips, or for only being able to think about how much she wanted him to kiss her, when now she wasn't even sure if everything that happened yesterday had meant what she thought it had. After all he hadn't claimed to love her back.
"Tell me," he said gently. "Are you worried about the youkai? I won't let nothing happen to your family."
"I know. I know, you wouldn't," she told him, staring at his chest to avoid looking him in the eyes. "It's not that. I just thought, after yesterday, and you're not fully healed yet - I thought you might want me with you, is all. It's stupid..."
His arms closed around her, and she felt his chin against her head. "Idiot. If you finish these tests of yours, you'll be done with school, right?" When she nodded, he continued, "So how can you think that me telling you to go means that I don't want you with me?"
Kagome's eyes widened. "Oh. Oh!" She lifted her head and saw him smirking at her. Normally, she would have been irritated, but not today. Today she was happy, so happy that she didn't even blush as she raised herself onto her toes and pressed a kiss on the corner of his mouth. "I should get ready then. I wouldn't want to be late."
InuYasha let her go and watched her hurry around her room, gathering what she needed.
~ * ~
As always it was torture waiting for Kagome, even more so than usual since no one would let him do anything. He'd even offered to help the old man move boxes or clean around the shrine, but had been denied because of his still healing injuries.
For a moment he had been really irritated. After all, his wounds were almost completely healed, and they certainly weren't serious enough to keep him in bed any longer. However, before he let himself lose his temper, he remembered the way Kagome's family had cared for him, and his anger fizzled.
Later in the day it occurred to him that he could have gone back through the well to see what was going on in the past, but by that time Kagome was due to return, and he wanted to be there when she arrived.
InuYasha didn't even bother to pretend that he wasn't happy to see her as she reached the top of the shrine steps and spotted him waiting for her. She waved at him with a smile and hurried across the grounds to meet him.
She dropped her books on the bench beneath the goshinboku and sat down with a sigh. "It's good to be home - only one more day to go."
InuYasha offered a muttered, "Keh," as he took a seat beside her. "I was thinking about going back today. Miroku and Sango should be back by now, and they are probably wondering what the hell happened."
"Oh! I never even thought about that. You're probably right, but..." Kagome paused and looked at her lap. "I know this is going to sound terrible, but I really do need to study. I know that if we go back, I'll get caught up talking to everyone, and I won't make it back in time to get any real studying done. It's just that I really want to pass so I can be finished with school for good."
InuYasha let his hand close over hers at it rested on the bench. "You don't have to come. I'll just go and tell them what happened and then come straight back. They'll understand about you having to stay here this time. Remember they‘ve always understood, even when I didn‘t."
Kagome look up at him. "I know, but I'll still miss seeing them, and what about you? Are you really healed enough to go back by yourself? What if there's a youkai?"
InuYasha snorted. "I'm fine. By tomorrow I should be completely healed. Besides, there ain't no youkai out there that I couldn't take without the Tetsusiaga now that Naraku is gone."
Kagome studied him for a moment and then nodded. "All right then, but we'll have to go to the store first. That way the others will know that I am thinking of them, even if I can't come and see them just yet."
InuYasha wasn't particularly happy about having to go on a shopping trip or about wearing that damn hat, but Kagome was happy, so he kept those thoughts to himself. He only hoped that this would be a short trip and that they wouldn't run into those three girls while they were out.
Fortunately, since Kagome did have to study, the trip was brief, and they were back at the shrine in no time. It had been completely painless, if you didn't count the way that hat had pressed uncomfortably against his ears.
InuYasha set the bag on the table and then went upstairs to grab his Tetsusaiga. He hurried back downstairs so ready to head back through the well that he completely forgot that he was supposed to be taking supplies back with him.
Kagome returned to the kitchen with all of the items from the store packed neatly in a cloth bag so that they could avoid sending back a plastic sack back into the past, only to find no sign of InuYasha.
"Mama, has InuYasha come back downstairs yet?" she asked.
"Actually, Dear, he passed through here not two minutes ago," her mother replied. "I saw him heading for the well house."
With a long suffering sigh, Kagome ran out of the house with the bag of supplies in hand. If she hurried, she would be able to catch InuYasha before he got too far from the well on the other side. She reached the well and swung her legs over the side and then let herself fall in.
She landed at the bottom with a bone jarring thump that knocked her teeth together painfully. Stabbing pains shot up through her legs and caused her to fall back onto her bottom. Tears streamed from between her tightly shut eyes and a pained cry escaped her when her tailbone made contact with the hard earth. It was only a minute before she managed to force herself to draw a breath, but it felt like much longer, and it still took several moments more before she was able to think.
She kept her eyes shut against the pain and forced herself to take slow deep breaths while she waited for it to fade to a manageable level. It wasn't until that happened that she had a chance to fully comprehend what her impact at the bottom of the well actually meant.
Kagome opened her eyes, her heart beating rapidly and panic constricting her chest. She looked up, hoping against hope that she would see the clear blue sky above her, praying that something had gone wrong as she reached InuYasha's side of the well, even though there was no sunlight shining down upon her. Of course, all she saw were the wooden planks of the well house's roof.
"No. No, no, no, no, no," over and over she mumbled, unaware on a conscious level that she was saying anything at all as she forced herself to her feet. She winced and nearly fell when the pain in her left ankle resurged, but managed to avoid falling by gripping the ladder with both hands.
She climbed up three rungs, using her arms and an awkward sort of hop on her right foot. Then, closing her eyes again to gather her courage, she jumped back down into the well, careful to keep her left knee bent. She made an anguished sound that was not quite a sob and not quite a shout as she met solid ground.
The only thing she could thing was that this could not be happening, not now. Not now. She dropped to her knees and pulled at the dirt with her fingers as she called out his name,
"InuYasha!"
Her tears fell, making dark spots on the ground, and she didn't stop digging until she tore one of her finger nails to the quick. Her cry of pain was sharp and she sat back, pulling her knees up to her chest and resting her head upon them.
InuYasha would come back. He would find a way, even if she couldn't. He had to. He just had to, and she resolved to sit at the bottom of the well until he did.
InuYasha leapt into the well and was engulfed by familiar blue light. Slowly the ground materialized beneath his feet as he reappeared in Kagome's time. He had been fully prepared to go up to her room and relax while he waited for her to decide that she was ready to take a break from studying. The last thing he expected was to find a tearful and dirty Kagome looking up at him with a mixture of disbelief and relief. He was barely able to get out the first part of her name before he found himself holding her against him.
"You're back," she cried.
InuYasha frowned. "Keh, of course I am. I told you I'd come right back."
"I know, but I didn't know if you'd be able to come back," she said looking up at him. "The well - something's wrong. I followed you, trying to bring you the bag of supplies you forgot, and it wouldn't let me through."
InuYasha felt like someone had punched him in the stomach. It was unthinkable that they might have ended up trapped on different sides of the well. Without thinking of the possible consequences InuYasha leapt into the air with Kagome in his arms.
As the blue light surrounded him, he struggled to hold on to Kagome. The past pulled at him but he didn't let her go and soon the light faded with them both still on her side of the well. He wondered why the well would suddenly only work for him. He also wondered what the chances were that it might decide to stop letting him through as well when he was on the other side. After all, he had to go back at least once more, didn't he?
Someone had to tell the others that Kagome couldn't come back and that he wouldn't be coming back anymore either unless they could somehow figure out what was wrong and fix it. No one would expect him to risk being separated from Kagome.
"I have to go back," he said.
"What?! Why? What if you can't come back?" Kagome asked, her fingers digging into his arms as she clung to him.
"I have to tell the others," he replied. "Better I should do it soon rather than later and risk the well being closed altogether."
"You can't! What if it stops working when you get to the other side? Please, don't go," she pleaded.
He held her face in his hands, ignoring all of the smudges of dirt there and said, "I'll find my way back to you, I promise. Even if I have to go the long way around, I'll come back. They are our friends. We can't just leave them wondering what happened to us like that."
Kagome bit her lip. "Please... I thought I lost you once already. I don‘t know if I could stand it, if it happened again. "
"You won't," he insisted. "Trust me."
After some consideration Kagome finally nodded. "But I'm going to wait right here until you get back."
InuYasha pulled her closer and let his mouth cover hers. She leaned against him as he kissed her, her lips parting to allow him to deepen the kiss. When they parted her eyes were dark, and she was breathing heavily. For a long moment he just looked at her, memorizing her face, just in case he had to wait five hundred years to see it again.
He was ready to go then, but there was still one more thing he needed to do. This certainly wasn't how he imagined it would happen, but it couldn't be helped. "I'll be back as quick as I can. Remember, I love you, Kagome, and ain't nothing going to keep me from coming back."
She gasped softly and tears welled in her eyes. "I love you, too, so much."
The corners of his lips turned upwards and then he jumped.
