When Akihiko mentioned her beast Kagome looked at him, truly looked at him this time. She felt like she should know something but couldn’t quite grasp what she should know, it was on the tip of her tongue. “Yes.” She whispered, straightening herself as much as she could in Shippo’s death grip on her tiny frame, “I don’t know what happened… but she helped me.” She bit her lip and looked at her son. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine momma. I was so worried about you. Akihiko said you could have died. What was happening?” He was almost crying now, but trying to be strong for her. She saw through it but allowed his growing manhood the secret knowledge by not making light of the weakness.
“I was upset that I hurt you. I was scared that I had done it without realizing I had to begin with. Then I heard this voice in my head… I thought I was going insane after the pain….” She blinked, the pain! “How long have I been out?”
“Since yesterday.” Akihiko chimed in, knowing this might upset her all over again. “The worst part is over…. I think. Now we just wait and see what happens now that your concealment is lifted and the natural state of your body and mind begins to emerge after so long of being held in a ruse.” He sighed softly, wishing Midoriko was still here to help Kagome through this. “It will take some time, but eventually you will be done with the changes and you’ll have some sort of control. I swear.”
She nodded softly. Exhaustion starting to creep its way into her body. “I need to eat something.” She mumbled, feeling a slight tremor echo through her muscles. “Where’s my bag?” Shippo reluctantly released her so he could make her something quick to eat, he knew she would probably groan about the choice but that would be a good sign to him that she was border line on the normalcy side of things. She didn’t let him down when he sat back in front of her and produced a serving of ramen in a Styrofoam cup. “I hate ramen.” She grumbled.
“It’s food. And it is quick. I will get some water from the stream down the way to boil it for you in the metal canteen you have.” When Shippo was out of sight she looked to Akihiko and blushed a bit for some unknown reason. They sat in silence until her son reappeared only to throw the canteen on the fire in the red hot coals. “I was thinking. After you eat we need to move… and quickly. I have no doubts that everything in the surrounding areas and probably farther felt what just happened. I have NEVER felt anything like that... it must have been seen for miles.”
Kagome paled. Had it truly been so colossal in strength when she hadn’t been aware of what was happening? How could that be possible? She was just puny ol’ normal Kagome, right? “No.” a mental sigh rolled in her head as she ignored the beast within. How was she ever going to control such a magnitude of power? How could anyone? “Yeah… I can’t have anyone knowing I am still here, or worse Inuyasha coming to investigate what was happening.” She sighed aloud this time, watching Shippo snag the metallic canteen from the water as he called his Fox Fire to his hands to avoid being burned, this caught Akihiko’s attention and a spark of impressed intrigue settled over his features. Shippo poured the now steaming water into the foam cup and set it down, making sure not to remove the paper top as Kagome had shown him ages ago. “I really hate ramen.” She smiled at her son, “Thank you.”
“I suggest you eat quickly then, I can feel the curious spikes of energy all around us in the distances.” The Inuyoukai stated smoothly, “Besides, traveling at night will be more comfortable and most likely hide us better since you are so well known throughout the land due to your travels and spats with the half breed Naraku.” She shivered at the name, if only she could harness what she had just done by accident and destroy that foul creature for good everyone’s lives would be so much easier, so much lighter.
She was looking around cautiously now, with thoughts of destroying the demon spider her mind went darker. What if somehow Naraku discovered what was happening to her, her strength? He coveted the jewel for its power, he practically worshipped the tiny thing; what would he do with her? She shivered, biting her lip. “Where are we going Hiko?” She was handed the ramen with a pair or reusable chopsticks, which she began to eat after blowing on each bite without noticing she was doing so.
“Home.” He stood then, detesting the smell of the instant noodles from the future. She blinked but kept eating, finding the longer the steam of it lingered around her nose the more nauseating the stuff smelled. She swore she could smell the chemicals, the altered foods, the preservatives, and worse, the humans that had made it in the manufacturing line. Everything about the ramen packaging was almost as disgusting as the stuff inside it, but forcing herself to eat was helping the trembling in her body so she slurped it down quickly.
“Where is home?” she dumped the liquid out of the cup and tossed it into the fire, destroying all evidence of the time traveling woman.
“The mountains.” He locked his eyes on her own, “Try to remember.” He eased, hoping he wouldn’t upset her again. To his relief she nodded softly, but started to stand up and reload her bag since Shippo had emptied it to get to the ramen in the bottom.
“I’ll try. No promises, but I will try. How far is it?” she zipped up the bag and looked at the two males who had risen to meet her as she readied herself. She was still on edge from the display earlier, but typical Kagome busied herself to not think about it.
“A few days, depending on how fast we travel. If we go slow, it could be more than a week. But we made good progress yesterday since I carried you. Plus, since you have begun the changing process we can test your limits and see just how fast you can go after the next round.” She let out a squeak.
“There’s more! But you said it was over!” she was sputtering when he interrupted her.
“No. I said the worst part was over ‘Gome.” He frowned as her shoulders sagged, reaching a hand out to pat her head softly.
The one tiny motion set a whole new scene for the woman. She was small, no taller than his knees at this height when his hand reached out to pat her head softly, she was smiling up at him with the barest hint of elongated canines showing with eyes that matched his own. He was talking to her, though she couldn’t hear it in the flash, but her laughter was obvious by how her face changed before she bound off in a blur with the moon peaking over the snowcapped mountain tops, a young Akihiko chasing after her. Kagome gasped, jerking her eyes to look at him.
He smiled, dropping his hand. She would remember slowly, he knew it, but it still hurt not having her trust him fully, not having her be as carefree around him as she once had been when they were children. He kept telling himself ‘In time’ but before he could delve further into her shocked look his head snapped to the left and he was stiffening in what looked like a rather painful manner. “We have company.”
Shippo scolded himself for not keeping a better grasp on their surroundings while Kagome shot to attention, trying to figure out who and what was coming. “It is the Western Lord. We are close to his territory boundaries and he must have seen the show while patrolling. This could be a problem.”
Kagome sucked in a breath, if Sesshomaru was coming then he would surely tell Inuyasha she was still here if he happened to pass him or go taunt him willingly. “Shit.” She whispered harshly, trying to get moving before he could show up. That, however, was pointless. As she gripped the strap of her bag and turned to take off as fast as she could she got two steps only to slam into a stone wall. She squeaked, her hand dropping the bag as both quickly latched onto the silks that covered the Lord’s chest to steady herself. It was purely instinct to reach out and grab whatever was nearest to balance herself. A growl was heard and she slowly lifted her eyes to see the amber of Sesshomaru’s narrowed at her.
“You’re language is a product of this Sesshomaru’s foul mouthed half brother I presume, it is unbecoming of one as pure as you.” His voice was cold and distant, almost bored in nature. “Remove your hands from this Sesshomaru.” She jerked her hands back as if he were on fire and she needed to run shove her own in ice immediately.
“Sesshomaru… I am so sorry. I just… we were… you are… Why are you here?” She was flustered and not thinking properly as she sputtered out her words, not acknowledging his title in the presence of others as she normally would or thinking too far into the way she might sound rude. He snarled at her, earning a reaction from her own beast that she couldn’t control. It understood the young Lord and didn’t stand for such things. She was suddenly repeating his noise, though her own held a challenge in it and her eyes flashed caramel.
The Inuyoukai before her raised a delicate eyebrow, which almost gave Shippo a heart attack. The ice prince was showing an emotion. Akihiko intervened a moment later, jerking Kagome back and to his chest just as she was about to lunge at the male. “Kagome No!”
She was lost in fury that wasn’t her own. “How dare this pompous dog try to pull rank on me! I will rip him apart!” Kagome couldn’t seem to calm the beast within as she tried to reassure her that it was normal. That Sesshomaru still thought she was human. That he was an ally! “He asserted his dominance over us! NO!” and so the battle inside her head went as her body tried it’s hardest to get away from her older brother.
Sesshomaru watched as the human priestess turned into something he could never have imagined. She went from smelling human to smelling as full blooded as he did in a blink; her canines had elongated fully, her ears had tipped much like his own, her normally rich soil toned eyes were vibrant and like dark honey, even her blunt human nails were claw tipped like his own. She had purple markings along her arms like the royal bloodlines and he was baffled. His inner beast was licking his lips and pacing at his hard won control over it while she struggled to get to him while held by the male. He hadn’t truly paid attention to the Inuyoukai but now that he did he was instantly hearing the whispers to destroy him for touching the woman.
“Lord Sesshomaru.” He growled at Kagome as she tried to lunge again and she snarled at him in response. “Forgive my sister, she is learning. It is a long story. I am Akihiko, son of Masaaki of the mountain territories. You know Kagome obviously, she is the Hidden Jewel of the Mountain. The secret our clan has coveted so cautiously, please do not speak of what you have seen here Lord Sesshomaru.” He didn’t bow his head in submission, nor did he avert his eyes as he spoke. He was as equal in status as the young Lord, as was Kagome. “Forgive Kagome, she has only just discovered her beast. She has been locked away for eighteen years and is overzealous.” Akihko was trying his hardest to salvage this happenstance meeting by providing information so the Lord wouldn’t go looking and cause the rumors of the unknown species to spead..
Sesshomaru was in shock, he forced his face to keep his mask of indifference but inside he was raging a war with his beast. She smelled, admittedly, divine for a human but as a demon she was mouthwatering. He wanted to claim her, or more accurately his beast did. She was unspoken for, she was obviously powerful if the power spikes and display he had seen from his territory were from her and by the smell it was purely Kagome, and if she truly was The Hidden Jewel of the Mountain it would make having her as a mate all the more worth the attitude he knew she had. “You are telling this Sesshomaru that the ‘jewel’ your clan protects is not a powerful relic, but in fact her?” He looked to the slowly calming demoness being restrained with a glare strong enough to make even him think twice secretly.
“Yes.” Akihiko loosened his grip on Kagome, but still kept her against his chest.
“What is she?” Shippo was about to swallow his tongue, never in his life had he heard the Western Lord speak so much before. He wanted to move by his mother, but still fearing the wrath of the Inuyoukai he had seen spare Inuyasha on many occasions kept him rooted to the spot.
Akihiko hesitated, it was bad enough the silver haired male had caught them but to tell him of her heritage could prove to be either troublesome or lucrative. “I need your word, on your honor as a Territory Lord, that you will not speak of anything we speak of or you see. If you cannot give me this we will part ways with unanswered questions Lord Sesshomaru.” He would not sway on this request, too much was at stake now.
Sesshomaru looked down at the woman radiating power before looking to Akihiko once more and nodding softly, “This Sesshomaru swears on his honor that this meeting, and all that come after, will not exist beyond our parting of ways.” He watched as the male visibly relaxed and began to release a low rumble in his chest to soothe the woman.
Kagome wanted to know the answer to this question as well, begging her beast to overlook Sesshomaru’s antics from before. For the sake of Kagome’s sanity the beast began to recede slowly and along with it the claws and canines reverted back to her humanoid features. The only thing that didn’t change back were her ears which remained elvin tipped like the three males around her. This was not lost on Sesshomaru.
Feeling Kagome’s energy pull back and her scent start to change Akihiko released her fully, allowing her to move away from him. “Kagome would technically be a hanyou, but due to her parentage she isa a full blooded Inuyoukai. Her father, as you know, is Masaaki who is nearly equal to power as Inu no Taisho. The part that makes her unique is her mother.” Akihiko glanced at Kagome, watching as Sesshomaru did the same. “Her mother was Midoriko.” Sesshomaru instantly showed emotion as he looked back to Akihiko, as far as the world knew Midoriko was the purest of humans to walk the lands and had never taken a husband. He could instantly understand why Kagome had been kept a secret.
Kagome watched as his eyes widened and the shock bled into his features. She gasped softy which drew his amber eyes to her own chocolate ones. The beast inside her rumbled slightly, making the offhand comment that his eyes were rather beautiful and a more rich tone than his brothers. She hissed at her mentally. He was staring at her, she was staring at him, and Akihiko was looking between the two of them with a slight smirk. Shocking the stoic Lord was always fun, but this could prove to be even more amusing. A carefree woman with a temper and a masked complex man with a standoffish aura; his plotting began at that moment.
Shippo broke their moment though by speaking up softly. “So Kagome is a demon… truly?” He was more so stating it than asking it, but the confirmation would still be amazing for the adolescent male. Kagome broke eye contact first, looking to her son with a fresh wave of tears brimming her eyes. Her world was changing so rapidly, but she took the small comfort that now she wouldn’t have to leave her son, that he wouldn’t have to watch her die as he had his own parents.
“Yes. Kagome is a demon, and quite a powerful one.” Akihiko smirked as the Western Lord spoke, noting how Kagome slowly turned her gaze back to him. Sesshomaru had never said her name before.
