"Kagome, what's it?" Inuyasha sensed that unique aroma approaching, yet he didn't turn to look at her. The silver-haired lad was sitting on the grass, far from the rest of their group.
"I came to see if you're okay" she sat along his side and friendly stared at him. He wouldn't dare to do the same though, amber eyes looked concerned, and even a bit sad.
"And Sango?" The Inuhanyo asked as if it was a trivial matter. "Did she manage to calm Kohaku down?"
"It might be very hard to him to deal with all the things he has done. They'll need a time to heal..." Kagome gazed at the starry sky, visibly worried about her friends. "But I think Kohaku really isn't under Naraku control, Inuyasha".
"I don't know, Kikyo..." He started speaking, but when mentioning that name, the hanyo almost bit his tongue. It was basically instinctive to talk about their last meeting. Guilt shaded his features, for he knew how Kagome always suffered because of his little escapades. So, he just shut his mouth.
"Go on, I know you were together when Kagura brought Kohaku to us" She tried to pretend it was unimportant, and failed just like everytime. "What did you two talk about?"
"Kikyo believes Anna can be changing Naraku's heart". He revealed bitterly "She told me that, without noticing, Naraku is possibly being purified by Anna's aura, and his human side is overcoming his demon one".
"But it's a good new, I don't understand why you're so upset about this!" Her gentle heart rejoiced with a possible regeneration.
"You don't get it, do you?" He sighed, irritated. "Let's suppose that Naraku is turning into a nice guy, so what? Will we simply forget everything he has done and just let he find his happiness? That bastard melting for Anna and becoming more human will never change his past deeds, neither will bring Kikyo's life back!" Inuyasha spat all his resentment out, more to convince himself of making justice than to in fact believing that he would.
Inuyasha could be bad tempered, still his soul was kind, and if there was something the inuhanyo hated, it was making another people suffer. He couldn't care less about Naraku's feelings, of course. It was Annabelle's heart Inuyasha didn't wish to break, however he couldn't leave his mission behind, on his first love's behalf, who faced such tragic fate, and now had part of her soul locked into a wandering shell, carrying the unerased sorrows from the past, and always in danger, at least while the spider hanyo was still breathing. For once Naraku's human heart didn't have any feelings left for the miko, he would find no trouble to eliminate her. And, one way or another, it would always be impossible to believe in a full redemption when it was all about the arachnid, known as a master of deceit. Whatever the final scenario showed to be, the European lass would be shattered in the end, knowing this fact troubled Inuyasha's conscience.
Kagome, as much as it saddened her the enormous value he gave to Kikyo, she sympathized with his affliction, and rested her head softly upon his shoulder.
"I feel Naraku is growing vulnerable as the days are passing by" Inuyasha tried to sound natural, but his face frowned, cheeks a bit pinkish. "I believe we'll find his castle very soon" it was a sentence, they knew.
No more word needed to be spoken, the schoolgirl knew. There was nothing more to say, just to silently think, so she closed her eyes and sighed. An arm timidly entwined around her forms. Inuyasha held Kagome, pulling her a bit closer while they were sitting side by side, and the two of them searched for some comfort in that warmness.
It would be wonderful if life was so simple and everybody could offer their forgiveness to the worst of all sinners. However, it would be an utopia to think people could have such capability when they lost so much, suffered so much... Inuyasha lost his love, Sango lost her family and Miroku soon could lose his very life. Naraku was the lord of all those misfortunes and he needed to pay.
But what about Annabelle? What harm has she done? Must she pay the price of Naraku's deeds?
The world has never been fair, same as life, and they probably never will.

Days were passing by, fast as a blow, Annabelle and Naraku didn't know if they could call what they had as happiness, both barely would speak about their feelings to one another. They got used to understand themselves by gestures, by the deliverance of their bodies, finally sharing the same room. The lass developed a habit of laying her head over his chest to listen his heartbeats till she would fall asleep. The firm, yet calm beats worked as a lullaby, the fingers delicately stroking her hair, then her back, would vanish the torment that were her thoughts. Naraku could feel that shadow of grief always hovering above her, and even so, Anna looked a bit more serene, and tender. Maybe she would never love him, not as she loved Kagewaki, but it was obvious that in some way she cherished his company, and she sought for it frequently. The lass would take him to the tree in the yard, so they could admire the flowers, appreciate the sweet scent, little things that he never noticed how pleasant could be before.
"Here" the hanyo said, placing one milky blossom behind her ear, then smoothing the ginger bangs. "It suits you" his thumb slid over her cheek gently, crimson eyes locked on light-blue ones, noticing them trembling, suddenly watery. "Is something bothering you?" he tensed a bit.
She nodded, showing a little, faded smile. Then her face looked for some shelter into his chest. Annabelle didn't need to say a word for Naraku comprehend that must be related with a lingering memory of Kagewaki though. He frowned, passing his arms around her waist possessively. It was needed much of selfcontrol to not insist on questioning about, yet the hanyo could hear her troubled breathing.
"Are you crying?" he asked the most soft he could be.
"Please, just hold me" her hands ran over his chest, fingers pressing the fabric of his purple kimono. "Just let me stay inside your arms, like this" Annabelle's voice sounded muffled, her eyes, nose and mouth buried into his haori. She held him closer still. That was all. The hanyo has been disarmed and maintained them two entwined till her sobs end, till she wipe her eyelids and lift her gaze, so, in her tiptoes, with hands touching his shoulders, his mate finally kissed him.
Kagura watched many moments like that, always hiding behind windows or doors, anxiously waiting for her time to be released from Naraku's chains. She knew Annabelle has still a long way to run in that matter, any wrong move could mean the Wind Sorceress' last heartbeat.
"Maybe I'm almost there" Anna told her once, in a rare moment when Naraku wasn't around. The month was about to end and the hanyo was always nearby, spending every time that he could by the human's side, barely entering the Jewel's chamber. The demoness would never admit but she even thought they looked good together once in a while.
In the nights, walking by the castle's corridors, Kagura used to hear their sights and moans, her cheeks got often pink. One time she was bold enough to sneak through the door's gap, and she saw them naked upon the futon. Naraku's fingers intertwined with Annabelle's, his hands by the side of the woman's head as the hanyo was moving in and out of her entrance in a seductive rhythm, stimulated by the legs entwined around his waist, the bright white light delivering her body and sparkling above the arachnid, mostly over the scar on his back. Attentive to the way they gazed each other when their lips weren't united, Kagura realized that at least then, betrayal shouldn't be Annabelle's intent.
How odd... walking away she would think, puzzled not only about things she witnessed, but with the strange heat she felt.

"I didn't know you have kept this..." Anna said while opening a paper with a map she once drafted to Hitomi, showing the places she has already been. The castle lord heard her nostalgic sight and sat by her side.
"You miss him deeply, don't you?" this time Naraku couldn't help and the question poured down his tongue before he could regret it.
"Kagewaki made me feel something that I almost forgot what it was like" her hand slid over that sketch. "After many years travelling aimlessly, I finally felt I had a home. I didn't wish to leave, my heart desired to put down roots in a different place from my homeland" She pointed Scotland in the drawing with her index finger.
"You have a home here" Naraku spoke in a low tone, so focused on the paper that he missed her emotional gaze upon him. "Do you still wish to go back there?"
"I would like to, but I believe it will never happen. When my family left, it wasn't in the best of conditions..."
"But it has been quite a while. Do you think those people still remember you?"
"I doubt it, but it's alright. Why should I think about going back there? As you said, I have a home here now" Anna sighed and smiled softly, it wasn't like the joyful ones she used to show in the past, it was discrete, yet such smile was there, coloring her face a bit.
"It seems to be an interesting place" the precious rubies of his looked genuinely curious, as he wandered how would it be not only the verdurous woodlands of Annabelle's original locus, but also every other places she has stepped by, towns, villages, forests... How wide that world could be?
Then, by the corner of his eyes, the hanyo realized she has been staring at him for a while, without blinking. He knew far well her habitual attempts on deciphering him. Yet, that look of hers was unlike everyone Naraku has perceived before. The smile on her lips increased, parting them discretely. Soon after, Anna sighed and her features resumed to their usual neutrality.
She thought of taking Naraku to travel around every place drafted in that map, and almost suggested him they should leave together, but suddenly remembered that was the very promise she has made to Kagewaki. It would be one more treason for her conscience to carry. And, after all, Naraku hardly would be able to leave japanese soil. The victims of his schemes would make sure of that. Overthinking about the arachnid's fate saddened her instantly, fading her flush, darkening her gaze.
Naraku got prepared to ask what had happened, what were her thoughts, yet he hesitated. It must be Hitomi's ghost. They would never be free of him. The hanyo wasn't naive, yet he wouldn't say the name of that bloody haunting out loud, not only because he didn't want to throw salt on Belle's wounds, but also for he would not give this joy to Kagewaki. So, instead of speaking, the spider just enclosed her, gently passing his fingers through some orange locks framing her semblance. His firm, warm hands cupped her pale cheeks, thumbs softly stroked their corners while their foreheads touched.
"Let me play a song for you" she said low, and peacefully, looking already recomposed, touching slightly their noses, caressing those hands holding her face. Anna could be broken inside, but if there could be a bright side on having been through so much suffering, it was developing the necessary strength to at least pretend it all was alright.
Naraku settled over the futon, leaning his back behind, supporting his weight on his elbows. Red eyes sealed in the moment the first string has been swinged, and this way they remained while Annabelle's fingers were extracting the most magnificent melodies from the harp. A delighted smile adorned the hanyo's visage. How he loved those serenades, such notes and even the words of a foreign tongue. It was like his ears could comprehend the intentions behind them, and secretly he assumed to himself it was nice to have fun with something so simple, unlike the activities he was used to practice. Naraku found some rejoice without having to hurt a single soul.
Of course his enemies noticed his disappearance and, day after day, they bewildered it more. Meanwhile, Kohaku after remembering his actions had his spirit shattered, and if Sango hadn't been insistent, the boy wouldn't even feed himself. The demon slayer feared if she left him alone anytime, her little brother would attempt to take his own life.
"Sometimes I wonder if Naraku did this on purpose" she said to Kagome in one of the rare occasions when Kohaku wasn't around. He and the other lads were washing themselves into a hot spring.
"What do you mean?" her friend asked confused.
"If he returned Kohaku to me, just to throw on my face that even if we are together, we'll always be cursed by the past". She rubbed one arm over her eyes, concealing some tears of rage.
"Sango, you must be patient!" Kagome gently touched her shoulder. "These things take time, Kohaku suffered a great deal..."
"Naraku stole our happiness!" and she fell on crying, soon her hands were covering her soaked face while her shoulders shook intensely. "I can't believe one day we will recover from this, and I can't stand seeing my only brother so miserable!"
"Sango..." the lass in school uniform held her tight, hoping that into a sheltering embrace the demon slayer would be able to calm down. Kagome would release her only when Sango would look a bit relieved.

"Yo, Kohaku..." Inuyasha called while they were dressing up "I know it's tough, but some time you need to find the strength to face it".
The boy didn't respond, his hollow swollen eyes lowered, the dark circles below made him look older.
"You know, we all have been through losses here..." Miroku said softly, coming closer.
"Were you who caused these losses?" the boy asked lethargic.
"It wasn't your fault, do you understand? You didn't choose to do whatever you did, Naraku forced you and then erased your memories" the monk explained cautiously.
"Then was it him who made me forget?" Finally his features showed some spark of life.
"Yes!" Inuyasha, then, rejoined the talk. "He made you kill your own family and friends, than erased your memories and manipulated you to do another horrible things" even if Miroku, and a silent Shippo were staring at him with reproving gazes, he went on: "Turn all this sadness in will to fight, I promise I will make Naraku pay for everything he has done!" His aurum eyes looked deeply into the boy's almond ones. Into the inuhanyo's amber gems there was the glow of determination, his tone demonstrated his faith and the will to remain attached to that goal at any cost. Honesty overflowed from his pores.
Kohaku breathed in and then nodded positively. Inuyasha's belief ended up shinning on him. So, regaining some piece of his soul, he made a revelation that immediately excited every male accompanying him:
"I think I still remember where that castle is..."
