Won first place for prompt!
It took every ounce of strength that Jakotsu had late that night to half carry Bankotsu all the way over to the bed and by the time he made it there, it was all he could do not to drop him down. Sighing in relief that the hard part was over once he was laying face up with his wounded shoulder within reach, Jakotsu reached down and ripped open his sleeve where the attack had already created a hole for him to start from.
Once the opening was big enough that it wouldn't be in his way, Jakotsu lit the candle on the nightstand and brought it closer so he could see what he was dealing with. It wasn't hard to figure out that the small, round wound was caused by a gunshot and Jakotsu quickly lifted Bankotsu up a bit only to discover there was no exit wound.
He would have to dig the bullet out himself and that was not something he had ever done before. Taking a deep breath to calm his nerves, Jakotsu stood and began searching for a knife. It wasn't long before he found two in Bankotsu's belongings and placed one in the fire for later and heated the other in the dying flames for a few moments to make sure it was clean before he made his way back over to the bed. Making sure he was still asleep, Jakotsu silently prayed he would stay that way until he was finished, even as he drew the sharp edge of the knife toward the wound.
Even in his unconscious state, Bankotsu felt extreme pain the moment Jakotsu began digging around for the bullet as he began thrashing around and crying out in his sleep. Worried his movements would cause him to be hurt further, Jakotsu stopped what he was doing for a moment and carefully climbed on top of him; trapping his arms between his legs. Though it would make it harder for him to reach the wound comfortably, there was far less chances of him doing more serious damage on accident this way.
Returning to his previous actions, Jakotsu once again began trying to dig out the bullet even as fear continued stalking his heart. Even if he wasn't in danger of stabbing him anymore with his lessened moments, he still had no real understanding of what he was doing. For all he knew, he could be making things worse, but it wasn't as though he could go and find a doctor as they would most likely send a wire to nearby towns if they suddenly had to treat a stranger that had been shot. And even Jakotsu couldn't explain how that had happened.
Before he could become too paranoid about what might happen, Jakotsu could feel the tip of the knife brush up against the bullet and turned his full attention back to digging it out. Much to his relief, it was not long before the tiny, bloody bullet was resting in his open palm. Setting both it and the used knife on the nightstand to deal with later, Jakotsu made his way over to the fireplace and retrieved the second knife.
Taking a deep breath to calm his shaky hands, Jakotsu gently sat down on the edge of the bed next to him and using his left hand to steady himself, he leaned over to Bankotsu's shoulder and pressed the heated blade against his wound to cauterize it. The moment the searing metal touched his skin, Bankotsu let out an ear piercing scream and worried he would wake the others, Jakotsu quickly placed his hand over his mouth.
A split second later he had to fight the urge to scream himself and pull his hand away when Bankotsu bit down on it in pain or perhaps fear. Praying he would stop as soon as Jakotsu was finished, he made sure the bleeding had stopped before pulling away the cooling knife. Much to his relief, the moment he did, Bankotsu unclenched his jaw and realized his grip.
It came as no surprise to him when he glanced down to survey his own wound and found that his teeth had broken the skin and caused him to bleed. Deciding to deal with it later since it didn't look too deep, Jakotsu turned his attention back to Bankotsu, he found pain filled eyes staring up at him weakly. "I got the bullet out, but you need your rest. Sleep," Jakotsu insisted mere seconds before Bankotsu had closed his eyes once more and instantly falling unconscious.
Setting the knife down beside the first, making a mental note to wash them soon, Jakotsu decided it was time to tend to his own wound. Making his way over to the water basin, he began cleansing his hands in the water as he tried to remember if he had seen the pump to refill it on his way in. Figuring it shouldn't be too hard to find, Jakotsu took a closer look at his hand in the candlelight; happily noticing that the bleeding had already stopped.
It would seem he was lucky enough to not require stitches; which he was positive he would not have been able to do for himself. Glancing around the room for a makeshift bandage, he settled on an extra sheet that had been placed at the foot of his bed and quickly tore off a strip. Unskillfully wrapping his hand, Jakotsu continued to tear off strips until he had enough for Bankotsu. Making his way toward the other end of the bed, Jakotsu bunched up one of the strips and poured clean water onto it from the pitcher beside the basin.
Using it to carefully clean around the wound, Jakotsu folded up a second dry one and placed it on top of the wound. After double checking to make sure Bankotsu hadn't awoken again and was about to scream, he began wrapping a long strip over his shoulder and under his arm pit; not for the first time wishing he knew what he was doing. Once he had tied it as tightly as he dared, Jakotsu sat back for a moment to survey his work before sighing softly in relief when blood did not begin seeping through the off white bandage. Apparently he had done something right.
Standing up, Jakotsu stretched his arms over his head to relieve the stiffness in his back only to realize his hand was beginning to throb. Deciding it best to ignore it, as he had nothing to dull the pain, Jakotsu turned his attention to menial tasks that would keep his mind occupied with the mundane. Grabbing the dirtied basin, Jakotsu made his way quietly out of the room, carefully closing the door behind him, and made his way downstairs and outside.
After dumping the dirty water in a small ditch that was dug for such things, he began searching around for the water pump; and as he expected it wasn't that hard to find. Placing the basin under the spout, he pumped the handle a couple of times before bending over to wash out the residue from his blood. Once he was certain it was clean, Jakotsu picked up the basin and began making his way back inside.
Though there was still an hour or so before dawn, Jakotsu wasn't too surprised to find the inn's cook was already preparing breakfast in the main room. "Good morning, Miss, the first batch is just about ready if you wanna wait but a moment," the cook informed him with a cheerful smile as he gestures toward the stools linking the bar. Deciding food was just what he needed right now, and Bankotsu would be needing as soon as he awoke, Jakotsu agreed with a smile and a nod of his head before sitting down.
Though the cook talked his ear off with useless chit chat while he waited, Jakotsu was still thankful for his freedom from the room. That was not to say that he didn't want to be around Bankotsu, and in fact the opposite was the truth, it was just that as a saloon girl, he had never really had to deal with injuries; other than ones that had been inflicted on him over the years.
The last time he had to deal with blood that was not his own, had been the night he left the orphanage. The memory still left a bad taste in his mouth and Jakotsu doubted he could ever see blood again without being reminded of what had happened that night. It had not been his fault and Jakotsu had never once blamed himself for the boy's actions, but that did not mean he had forgotten that everyone else had put all of the blame solely on his shoulders.
Perhaps they would have thought differently if the boy had survived, but as there was no way to know for sure or to change the outcome even if he did, Jakotsu wanted to be as far away from any reminder of that night as was possible. Alas that was not to be as he would need to check on Bankotsu's bandage soon enough. Now he could only pray that his lucky held out and the bleeding did not start again.
