Annabelle was dedicating herself to play the vast repertory of songs she knew, from her homeland folk chants to music she has listened in countries she had stepped by. Then, all of sudden, she stopped. A distinguishing noise bothered her ears, it was like a pulsating sound, so discrete that the lass even wondered if it wasn't a trick of her imagination, however the strange sound persisted. Never before she has noticed it, and still the noise seemed to be something that always have been there, hidden in some dark corner of the castle.
Something inside of her was pleading to go find the source of such lingering beats, like a voice whispering inside her ear, mixing itself with her own conscience. Decided to discover what it was, Anna raised from the bench and departed her fingers from the harp's aurum strings, not caring about wearing only her clear chemise and corset. Naraku, in the basement, sighed frustrated when the music ceased.
From where does it come from? It seems to be calling for me... she thought as her feet would step ahead, wandering around the corridors of that castle as if it was a maze. Where are Kagura and Kanna? Belle felt lonely, there was not a clue of the other residents.
Her walk abruptly stopped when her senses captioned a malignant energy. She was by the side of the Jewel of Four Soul's chamber. Blue eyes gazed the open entrance protected by a barrier. The gemstone was intensely shinning, if that thing was a person, surely it would be mocking of her. Anna faced the jewel from that door, unblinkingly. It hasn't been hard to cross Naraku's forcefield, perhaps the hanyo himself didn't have put so much effort to prevent her on doing so. Closer to that cursed object, the foreigner assured:
"Whatever is there inside, it does not scare nor seduce me. I know that your only usefulness is to bring disgrace" she spoke, facing the lilac, almost perfectly rounded pearl, acting like accusing a person, and Anna wasn't fully mistaken. She just didn't know that Shikon no Tama represented not one, but many revolted beings.
The sound of beating echoed even louder, dizzying the lass. Annabelle hesitated, remaining inertial in front of the gem while all strings of hair on her body chilled. An invisible presence was lurking around, making her shudder in terror as the shard into her chest felt like burning. Would that be an answer for her provocation? The white luminescence around her body increased as a natural shield.
I cannot let such a little lilac stone destroy you, Naraku. I want to protect you... The wish pulsed into the bottom of her heart.
Ba-dump, ba-dump. And the beats wouldn't stop to resound. So the Scottish woman initiated a race, running while her ears were trying to distinguish the origin of that noise. Because of the darkness and the miasma covering the place, it was impossible to guess how many hours Belle has spent chasing after that noises. She entered every room, opened and closed countless doors, till she found an isolated chamber where certainly the beat was coming from. A much more stronger barrier covered it's entrance, and probably it's existence was what made it so hard to find that place, like the room was invisible to everyone in the castle and, not coincidentally, something has helped her to get there.
In each step she took, the sound grew intensely. When Anna was just a few inches of the door, it mysteriously opened and the barrier simply vanished like greyish dust. The young ginger lass got in, there was no bed, and the only furniture was a wooden shelf against a wall, keeping a vase where the poundings were coming from.
Slowly, Anna moved towards that receptacle, her shaking hand removed it's lid and a horrifying scream almost scaped her parted lips. The pulsation, the beating, those disturbing sounds belonged to a heart which has being kept inside an ordinary ceramic pot.
Kagura! She quickly realized, and her friend's request haunted her conscience.
It was Kagura's heart.
First, Annabelle calmed down her breathing till it stop to gasp, then she carefully caught that vital organ in hands and brought it near to her chest. At last, she ran desperately through all the way back, looking for Naraku's incarnation.
XXX
What is this feeling? Kagura suddenly got alarmed, she was sitting at the veranda's edge observing the area. It was her duty in her master's most vulnerable days. When the demoness got up, she turned to the front door and saw Annabelle there, holding a thing she knew very well what it was. "I can't believe! You..." Looking paler, she started to walk towards the female human, and soon the lass did the same, lifting her hands, offering the heart which she took great care to not wound on the way.
"I did it" Anna was so stunned as Kagura "I found it!"
"So was not Naraku who gave it to you?!" fear fell upon her like thunder "You have stollen it!"
"He wouldn't listen to me, Kagura. You must leave this place for once, take it!" Anna's fingers opened, her arms stretched into the yokai's direction.
"You crazy wench! Naraku may kill you for this!" She covered her reddish lips with one hand, while the other slowly got close to her most dearest recovered part.
"It doesn't matter what he decides to do with me, I can take care of myself" the lass smiled although her every joint was trembling "Go, live your life and enjoy the so dreamed freedom"!
"I will never forget the risk that you took for my sake..." The Wind Sorceress barely knew how to thank for such gesture, a small smile adorned her semblance, a bit clumsy and rigid, but genuine. When one of her fingers rubbed the agitated heart, dark smoke emerged from the castle's interior like a hurricane, as did many furious tentacles.
Kagura fell behind, Annabelle threw herself to the side, protecting the alive little treasure with her own body.
"I barely turned my back for a little while, Annabelle, and then you think you have the right to do whatever you want" The deep voice resounded from every side, as the mucous appendages dragged themselves through windows and doors, along with colorful centipede parts, and finally his languid face with glimmering choleric scarlet eyes showed up. The Jewel was inside of him again, this time behind his forehead.
It's not possible he is risking to leave the castle in such conditions! Kagura shivered, still sat over the dark earth.
"You will pay for this!" Naraku dropped the sentence, and at first Annabelle thought it was for her, however the same tentacles which had pushed her down, aimed the wind yokai body.
"No, let her go!" Anna appealed, attracting the hanyo's attention. "I took this heart alone and decided to return it to the true owner, so punish me instead!" She put herself in front of the demoness, the pulsing heart was in her hand, by her back, pointed to Kagura's reach. "Take it" Belle whispered, one eye over her shoulder, focused on the startled female. "Now!" The White Rose shouted, insisting on that when noticing her friend's hesitation.
"How dare you, human?" the arachnid enraged even more with her boldness, not only for delivering the heart to his servant, but also for walking towards him looking so fearless.
"I am ready to receive my punishment, but you let her go" Anna stared at him incisively, and still some sad features were evident in her eyes.
His head, linked to a spine – the only human nuances between that soaked amount of arthropods pieces – enclosed the lass analyzing her. He saw Belle shivering, biting her lower lip while her joints constricted, then his rubies witnessed her turquoises sealing, waiting quietly for any fate would be hers, as some tentacles was climbing her legs, others were contouring her waist, and two immobilized her arms.
"No, Naraku!" Kagura shouted from afar.
"Stupid woman" he lifted Anna's chin with one of the free appendages "I give you a home, I offer you comfort, protection, and this is how you repay me, betraying me in the first chance you have".
"I did you no harm" coppery eyelids slowly parted.
"Fortunately, I have Kanna always by my side, and she shows me everything through the mirror" that tentacle evolved Annabelle's neck. "I could watch your little expedition, I thought you would give up, but no, you had to proceed with this inconsequence. What a joke! "He chuckled bitter, untiringly, without giving her a chance to give any excuse. "What did you think would have happened, that you would give Kagura what she wanted the most, and then everybody would live happily ever after? Didn't you even suspect of what she would try to do when she finally has conquered the so desired freedom?"
"Naraku, release her!" Kagura insisted.
"She would join Inuyasha's troupe and in the first opportunity she get, Kagura would come after my head!" His grunting voice overcame his incarnation's pleading. "But you didn't stop to think about it, because you are a stupid human like every other else, I despise your kind!" then he yelled, out of control. Annabelle felt her bones snapping into the strong grip of the hanyo's body parts which were cloistering her. "I should have known you would cause my ruin, yet worry not, for I will fix my mistake" the last words, however, sounded as a low hiss, while his eyes narrowed dangerously.
"You promised you would never hurt me again" she reminded him, and the spider responded squeezing her neck furiously "You are not a monster..." it was all Anna could say, for soon the air ceased to run inside of her, and she began to suffocate. Tears poured down her face, mixing with the mucus of the tentacle entangled around her throat. What hurt her the most wasn't the violence itself. Even her ribs were being brutally pressed, and her legs were already numb, the worse pain resided her soul.
"So much for a pretty face..." Naraku murmured angrily, however the tentacle loosened it's hold around her neck, and his victim coughed while recovering her breath.
Looking directly into his eyes, the lass could see his anguish. If Naraku really wanted, he would have killed her already, and yet the hanyo was delaying it. His tentacles had many orifices made to expel venom, and he chose not to use such resource. Annabelle was human and fatally would succumb to his miasma. He didn't wish to murder her, not even had the intent, the arachnid was almost releasing the woman when the gesture of his incarnation got his attention.
"Take it back!" Kagura knelt next to him, lifting the heart to Naraku. "Take it now and leave her alone!" She asked desperately.
Kagura, no... Anna wanted to scream, her sight blurred wet, yet her body didn't respond.
"Oh!" a bitter grin darkened Naraku's face. "Who would tell that even you would be bewitched by Annabelle's charms?" A smaller brownish appendage got the pumping artefact and brought it to his body, hiding it inside his own flesh.
Finally, Anna has been released and fell upon the earth like a doll. She was awake, yet in shock. Still, her ears kept attentive to the sounds, even if her sight was still clouded.
"You idiot, you are so clever for some things, but so dumb to others!" The Wind Sorceress mocked "You don't deserve her" then she assigned vehemently and glared his eyes directly, almost forgetting to fear for her own life.
With the strength of one centipede body part, the hanyo threw his incarnation away, her back hit against one wooden column and the impact made her faint. After such wild attack, He heard some low, discrete sobs nearby, they came from his lover. Naraku stared at the fallen, defeated crying woman. He thought of coming closer, yet what would he do? What could he say? She had it coming, the present disaster happened for her sake. Then why did he feel so miserable guilty?
Those many arthropods parts revolved and began to shrink, while human legs and arms were slowly growing in their place. The sun must be rising behind the fog, through the barrier – he concluded, not only because he noticed his body turning back into its usual shape, but also for seeing a tenuous golden light beyond the mist.
The light intensified though, and those crimson eyes widened, finally realizing that such shine hasn't it's origin from the morning star.
"Kaze no Kizu!"
Inuyasha?! Sky-blue eyes got bigger as well. Annabelle's fingers dipped into the dark sand.
