Disclaimer: Inuyasha and it's characters does not belong to me, only the OCs that will appear in the story are mine, yet I have no personal interest of profit with it. It's free entertainment from a fan to fans. |
The name of this chapter is a tribute to Tarja Turunen's song with the same name. I really recommend to listen it while reading, is a beautiful song and I think it translates very well the troubling feelings described during the chapter. :)
Hope you'll enjoy the ride!

Facing the wall, Naraku was sitting, his dark curls were spread over his shoulders and chest while he insistently blew a katana against his back. The movements would repeat themselves untiringly, for each time the blade cut the spider mark off, it would emerge intact again on his skin, as if it never has left it's spot. The more that scar reappeared on his flesh, more the hanyo would pierce the sword against it's shapes, each time more furiously than before.
"I didn't know you enjoyed self-flagellation" a female voice sounded from the door.
"Kikyo?!" Naraku stopped as soon as he heard her, not expecting the priestess would appear so early. "What are you doing in here?"
"I came to bring you the shards I have found, as always" she spoke naturally, and then sat next to him.
"Deliver them and leave" He ordered anxiously. However, the priestess just remained there, staring at him, without throwing a single piece of gemstone on the floor. Dark eyes analyzed his every feature.
"I know what you have done" she spoke, making him feel his spirit opened, unbarred, although he didn't have a clue of what she was suggesting. "It has been noble of you, Naraku, to let her go" Then the miko clarified.
"What are you talking about?" Into his depths he felt an icy cold freezing his core, yet he maintained the misunderstanding façade.
"You must be very fond of that woman, do you not? It seems that I was mistaken when I thought she was only a tool you were using to try to forget me" she smiled. "It seems that you finally discovered how true love is like".
Naraku's eyes expanded wildly, as if they would jump from their orbits. In a single move, he threw himself over the maiden carved in clay, his two hands were a few inches of her fragile neck, almost touching it's paleness. Kikyo didn't blink, there was not a trace of fear on her semblance. Her arms and legs laid immobile over the floor. Her eyes were stuck like severe judges on the tormented half-demon covering her body.
"If I love someone who isn't you, what is preventing me to rip your head off at this very moment?" He asked, showing a maniac grin, his fingers rubbing against her milky skin, still not daring to squeeze it though.
"You may have feelings for another woman, yet while Onigumo's heart still beats inside your chest, you will not be free of me". She assigned in seriousness. Those hands so near from her throat trembled, pondering if they should just smash her bones or caress her contours.
Damn be you! Another impulse grew inside of him while having his body so close to hers, as if he could find some solace with that cold argil sculpture. Disgusted by his own thoughts, even by himself, the hanyo removed his weight over her forms and resumed to sit where he once was. Kikyo calmly got up and threw in front of him the shards she had collected.
"Abandoning her was the most righteous thing you have ever done" she said, cleaning the dust of her clothes. "Being at your side would be a death sentence to her". While talking, the priestess walked towards the door. "Without you, that woman has a chance to have a decent life" after such words, Kikyo was gone.
A low groan sounded behind his gritting teeth. Kikyo just read his intentions and yearnings. Never before a decision have been so hard, nor painful. After making Annabelle fall into sleep, Naraku ruminated many ideas. The fact she has thrown herself in front of him when he was under Inuyasha's attack just tormented the Spider in an undescribable way. What if she has died? What would become of his world without her light? He would not bear to have Annabelle's blood in his hands, and if she was still accompanying him, this would inevitably happen, for his enemies would never offer any truce, and Naraku himself did not wish they to do so. His complicated, passional being was divided in many ramifications, and those agreed on ceding to hate, to greed. Because all the pain and unsureness gave the arachnid a notion of weakness, reminding him of the ignoble human a piece of him has been in another life.
And even with this whole essence fated to darkness and destruction, his core wept, consumed by an unmeasurable sadness, wishful for her embraces, for the few sweet smiles which with so much effort he has been able to captivate from her. There was a part of the hanyo which wanted to believe the woman's heart was opening up to him, but after their separation, if that heart one day has let itself shelter the spider, such time and chance were already erased. The opportunity of completely having Annabelle has vanished when he chose to protect her.
Higher than his own desire, Naraku has opted for the greatest good of his desired one.
Kikyo was right, unintentionally Naraku acted with nobility, mayhaps for the first time in his entire existence. He could never make Annabelle happy, by his side the lass would have to live forever hiding, kept inside a morbid castle lost into a miasma mist. She didn't deserve such fate...
So, if the hanyo has done the right thing, why was he suffering so much?
Because he loved her. He knew he did. Naraku could not deny nor hide it any longer.
Damn be the love. He thought. Damm be them both and reiterated. This stupid human heart, which only distracts me and departs me from my true goal has no use to me at all. Naraku dressed his haori back, then tied his hair in a high ponytail, standing up soon after. I shall find a way to rid myself of this nuisance once and for all! He finished, leaving the room. "Kanna!" the arachnid summoned his servant.
"Yes, master" she appeared in the middle of the dark corridor.
"Did you settle Kagura in the proper place?" He asked, not concealing the sadistic smirk.
"Yes, as you commanded".

"I can't sleep" Annabelle concluded after so many attempts, swirling and shrinking her body over that uncomfortable chair.
"It takes a while, but you will get used to it" Ailyn was talking about that old, hard seat.
"It's not only that" the ginger one confessed. "I just can't stop thinking".
"Oh, Annabelle, how complicated you are!" Her eyes rolled in annoyance.
"Have you ever loved someone?" the question sounded low, a bit shy.
"There she goes..." the blond lass mocked.
"Seriously, Ailyn, have you ever fell in love?"
"Luckily, not. And do not intend to". She shrugged.
"Why all this repulsion about love?" Anna looked at her twin, eyes blinking slowly.
Ailyn answered only with her gaze, glaring her equal from head to toes, pointing at her image.
"Believe me, love is not only about suffering" a nostalgic smile curved her lips.
"Oh, I see!" She threw her golden curls behind, chuckling.
"I have been happy in love once..." Anna nostalgically recalled, her turquoises shimmered, yet she kept tenderly smiling.
"Then Naraku appeared and killed the poor bastard, how sad". Ailyn said as if it was a trivial matter, while moisturizing the liquid inside the cauldron. Then she saw her sister's features fading into melancholy again. "Oh, forgive me, I do not deal very well with such delicate matters, you know it".
"It's fine, it may be hard to understand something which you haven't experienced yet" She said, facing the dirty floor.
"What I do not understand is, if that deplorable creature harmed you so much, how could you fall in love with him?" The woman in red walked to the old armchair, stopping by Annabelle's side.
"I don't even know what I feel, Ailyn..." She said, resting one hand over her chest, where a jewel shard has been placed "I'm not sure if this feeling belongs to me, of if Naraku bewitched me to feel this way".
"Give me the shard if it is making you feel things you do not desire" Ailyn raised one hand to her, ready to receive the little piece of stone.
"No way". The answer came quickly.
Her sister snorted. "I needed to try at least" then she turned her attention back to the cauldron.
"What is this potion you're preparing?" Anna raised her head, gazing at the big metal recipient.
"You silly, it is not a potion. It is our supper!" she laughed in disbelief.
"Oh, but the smell..." Belle couldn't conceal a grimace.
"Stop complaining, it is eatable!"
When they could notice, both siblings were laughing together of their current situation. The two glanced at each other, secretly relieved for they weren't into a fight. After so many years aparted, for the first time they felt like family again. Annabelle thanked Ailyn inside her thoughts, being with her twin helped to wake the hope on having a better life. Maybe the Red Rose was right about the possibility of finding happiness without needing a soulmate to share it. She decided then, to find a meaning of living using her gift to help the others, just as Kikyo has suggested. Anna would do her part to make the world a better place.
Naraku, on the other hand, was taking the opposite direction. More and more he was close to an endless fall. The worst kind of ideas were popping within his head, along with such conspiratorial whispers, some from the very amount of beings whose composed him, and others from the tormented souls locked into the jewel. An essential piece of himself was contorting inside, begging to be released. Maybe all the hate he felt for his origins was having some effect at last. The hanyo smirked, although the spark in his eyes still trembled.

"Annabelle, time to wake up!" Ailyn shook her carelessly, almost knocking the red-haired lass from the chair.
"Already? I barely closed my eyes..." she sighed, irritated, dark circles were pumping around swollen eyes, denouncing the hard time night might have been.
"You did not sleep, did you?" The blondie shook her curly head, with one hand over her own forehead. "I think you need to drink some sleepy teas from now on, or you are going to freak out".
"I used to dream of Kagewaki, soon those dreams turned into nightmares. Then, Naraku found a way to prevent Kagewaki's apparitions in my sleep, and now I fear if I'll go to sleep, I'll have to deal with the void... or with Naraku himself" Anna looked at the wooden ceiling, however her eyes were not a bit focused on it.
"Do you miss him that much?" Ailyn asked, looking interested.
"Naraku?"
"Kagewaki".
Annabelle lips sealed, taken by a morbid silence. Guilt left it's trace on her every feature. Ailyn, aware of her nuances, breathed slowly, like she was seeking for courage to do something, and after, showing the regular impatience the Red Rose asked: "If you could, would you like to see him again? It seems you two have some pendent matters to solve".
"He is gone, Ailyn..." Anna grieved.
"You have no idea of what day is today, do you not?" She smiled.
"I must confess I've been lost in time lately" The White Rose stood up, stretched her arms, then began to arrange her bag of clothes.
"Luckily of you, tonight will happen the Samhuinn." Her fingers held her sibling's wrist, impeding her to proceed on her activity.
"The All Souls Night!" Belle felt her body petrify right where it was, immediately she understood what her twin meant to say.
"Yes, the only moment of the year when the dead can walk among the living".
"But Kagewaki's spirit is different though, it's like he is stuck in a sort of Limbo..." Remembering his condition, soon any trace of enthusiasm was gone.
"Sister, rejoice!" Ailyn's hand stroked Annabelle's shoulder "If there is someone who has the power to communicate with the dead and summon them, this person is me" She said proudly, stunning the ginger woman sitting on the floor. "Oh, do not look at me this way, I am in debt with you! I just need you to show me the last place you have been with him, and I promise I shall call your dear Kagewaki to a visit".
"It is too dangerous to you leaving this place, I don't know what Naraku could do if he finds you" She oscillated, entwining her fingers on her skirt's fabric.
"I am not going there, Belle. You will".
Belle? How many years Ailyn has not called her this name? The red-haired lass got moved, and a tender smile faded that melancholy shadow from her face.
"So, take it or leave it. You will have an entire night to spend with your lost beloved".
"I take it" she decided quickly.
"Right, so you can stay here today, at night I will send you to wherever this place is, and from there you follow your path" Ailyn then stopped to gaze directly at her.
"Thank you, Lynnie" Anna got up, thinking of hugging her sibling, but changed her mind seeing her twin move away.
"Yes, yes, no commotion please!" She waved her hands. "Now, help me to clean this cow-house" Ailyn took a straw broom and began to sweep that tiny space, more to distract herself than to really put it in order.
Annabelle sighed, resigned about her sister's instrospective and pretty much sharp manners. At least she could see all suffering Naraku has put her into hasn't been in vain, for now, being reunited with her sister, Anna witnessed Ailyn's repentance. Thanks to that, when the moon would rise high up the mountains, and the stars would glimmer into the nocturnal skies' vastness, that yearning of knowing to whom her love was destined would be clarified.
Was Kikyo right and, truly, her heart has always been seeking for Kagewaki?
She hoped so.
And Kagewaki Hitomi, how would he show himself to her? Would he be the sweet young master who made her feel sheltered once, or would he be the errant spectrum filled with hatred? Annabelle would have to find out by herself.
To be continued...

Hi there, dear readers! Tomorrow is holiday here in my country, Corpus Christi. So, I found some time to come and publish a new chapter. Maybe tomorrow I'll achieve to release one more, let's hope so.
Samhuinn: I wrote in Gaelic, because it's Anna and Ailyn's native language. But people use to be more familiar with Samhain (Irish), or better: Halloween.
Samhain, to Celtic cultures, was about seasons' changing (end of summer), like a new year festivity, and the pagans believed that at this night the spirits of the ones who had passed, and even some supernatural folklore creatures could walk among the common people, like different "worlds" cohabitating for a certain while. When Christianity was spread around the western world, many myths of other cultures were absorbed and adapted, Samhain wasn't different. When people from Scotland and Ireland travelled to the United States around 1500 to 1800's, they also brought their cultural habits and would perform the festivities, so the church, in time, found a way to appropriate Samhain and turned the "All Souls Night" into "All Hallow's Eve", what became Halloween posteriorly. Of course, there are many more details about it, but I tried to be the most succinct I could to not make of this notes a lecture LOL. There are some movies and series from pop culture which explores a lot this matter. American Horror Story is one of many examples. Hope you have enjoyed to read a bit about it, and for the ones who already knew, forgive me if I missed something.
Speaking of All Souls Night, there is a song of Loreena Mckennitt with this very name, just awesome! Here I am recommending music to you one more time. Yey!
So, my dear readers, hope you are ready for a longer chapter next time, because if I cut it down, I think it will lose the intensity that I had put on it.
But, oh, there are so many emotions in there! I don't think you'll get bored, not at all!
See ya soon! Kissuus!
