Fragments of Broken Pride
Chapter 6
The taiyoukai was silent as his golden pools stared into the fire light, seemingly lost in his own mind. The taijiya and the monk retired back to the bedroom, carrying an already sleeping Shippo and a very nearly asleep Kirara with them. Kagome and Inuyasha remained near the fire, giving the demon lord curious glances every so often, but each look went unnoticed by the youkai. Inuyasha was concerned for his brother, having never seen such despair expressed on the demon’s visage before. Kagome too was worried for the demon lord, but her fear of him had also been reawakened with his aggression toward the hanyou earlier.
The youkai’s solemn face was creased with a frown, and his kimono was stained with the blood of the human child he’d carried in. He remain perfectly still other than the occasional flicker of his eyes back and forth over the wooden floor. When the human child cried out from the doctor’s ministrations to her wounds, Sesshoumaru’s body visibly tensed, as if her cries were painful to him.
After a grueling hour of the intense atmosphere, the doctor came out from the secluded room, rubbing the back of his neck wearily. Sesshoumaru stood up and approached the doctor apprehensively. There were no exchanged words as the demon followed the doctor, holding the same grave expression that hadn’t left since his arrival.
Inuyasha’s ears perked up as he heard voices from the hallway, and Kagome listened hard, but was unable to make out anything but murmuring.
“Can’t you do anything for her?” came the deeper voice of the demon lord.
“I’m very sorry. The damage is irreparable. Her physical wounds will heal with time, but she will most likely be scarred emotionally for the rest of her life. Her eyes will deteriorate over the years from not being used, and she will most likely develop a mental instability. I’m sorry I don’t have better news for you, young lord.” The old man then left the lord in the dark hallway and returned to his quarters.
Inuyasha’s face turned from one of concentration to one of severe melancholy. He hadn’t known the little girl, but he felt remorseful for the tender youth none the less.
Kagome nudged him, “What did they say?” she whispered as she leaned on his arm intently.
The hanyou’s ears fell droopily against his head, “The little girl…is hurt pretty badly…” he muttered.
Kagome covered her mouth with her hand, “How awful… What is Sesshoumaru’s relation to her? I remember her from a while back, but…I’m still confused…”
Inuyasha shook his head, “I’m not sure… but I intend to find out.” he said as he got to his feet.
Kagome scrambled to stand and catch him, “Maybe this isn’t the best timing, Inuyasha. Sesshoumaru seemed pretty upset. There’s no telling what he’ll do in this state.”
The hanyou paused for a minute, before shaking his arm free of the miko’s grip, “I can handle it, Kagome.” He then left her in the room alone to go face his brother, and get some answers.
Kagome frowned as the she was left by herself, “Inuyasha…I think you’re overestimating your relationship with him…” she muttered to his back.

As the hanyou approached his elder brother he couldn’t help but be shocked. The great lord of the western lands sat on the floor, huddled against the wall. His face was buried in his hands and he breathed lightly and slightly unsteadily. Inuyasha didn’t think it would be called ‘crying’ exactly, because there was a lack of tears and sobbing, but it was shocking enough none the less.
“Sesshoumaru…” the hanyou called softly.
The youkai growled menacingly, “Leave me alone.”
Inuyasha’s ears lowered , but he wasn’t giving up so easily. He approached further and slowly lowered himself to sit by the demon’s side, “I want to help you, brother.” came his mellowed voice.
Sesshoumaru snorted, still hiding his face from the hanyou, “You can do nothing that can improve my condition.”
Inuyasha frowned, “Tell me. You promised you’d treat me like a brother, and brothers share these kind of things.” He said, trying to convince the youkai lord.
The demon growled again, “Meaningless words I uttered in a feeble time. Leave me alone Inuyasha. This is your last warning.”
The hanyou’s eyes went wide, “I know you can be a jerk, and cruel, and heartless, but you aren’t a liar, Sesshoumaru! I saved your life and you owe m-”
His words were cut short as crimson, demonic eyes shot up at him and razor sharp talons were thrown across his face. “I am my own being, brother or not. I’ll make my own decisions and deal with my own problems without you dictating who I am. If you ever speak to me like that again I’ll have your head as a figurine on my wall. Don‘t forget who I am, Hanyou.” he snarled as he turned his back on the bleeding half-breed and left the scene.
Inuyasha clutched his bleeding face and sat back up from the floor. Tears stung his eyes and his bottom lip stuck out in a pout. Everything he’d worked for had been obliterated and they were now back to square one. He cursed as he kicked the wall in frustration.
Kagome rushed down the hall and to his side, “Inuyasha! Are you okay?” she asked as she knelt beside him. “I told you not to -you BAKA!” she whacked him over the head to let him know just how sorry she was for him.
The hanyou grimaced, “Damn, Kagome! I tried didn’t I?! He acts like nothing even happened before. It’s like we never even spoke before.” he said trying to hide the creeping sorrow in his voice.
Kagome put her arms around his head and pulled him to her bosom , sensing his disappointment, “Let me try.” she muttered as she stroked his silky hair.
Inuyasha sat away from her, “No. It’s too dangerous. If he get angry with you he could very easily kill you.” he said as he looked up into her chocolate eyes.
Kagome smiled down to him, “Don’t worry, Inuyasha. I’m a lot better at these things than you are. Let me give it a try.”
The hanyou frowned, “You’d better not come complaining to me when he rips your innards out.”
Kagome made an awkward face, “I don’t think I’d be complaining to anyone if I got my innards ripped out… but in any case, come back to the room and let me clean that up for you.” she said gesturing to his bloodied cheek. “I’ll try and talk to him after he’s cooled off a bit.”

The Lord of the West had been sitting on the porch for hours. He hadn’t moved an inch since he’d planed himself there during the middle of the night, last night, and now the sun’s rays were spilling over the horizon line, and still he remained. His golden eyes were dull and sorrowful. The light breeze gently played with his hair as the melancholy eyes lifted to reflect the breaking light in the distance. Already people were awakening to head out into the fields to work, and set up their stands to sell their goods. As their eyes fell upon the demon lord they grew frightful and nervous, but the Lord of the West remained impassive, and ignored them.
The sun’s light reached higher and higher into the sky, and as the children finished their breakfasts they came out into the streets to play, not noticing the youkai’s presence. As a woman walked by and spied Sesshoumaru a shriek fell from her mouth and she tripped as she turned to run, cutting her leg on a rock. Her son ran to her and kneeled by her side shouting, “Mother! What happened!? Are you alright!?” She couldn’t find her voice and only pointed to the shadowy youkai that sat calmly on the porch. The boy jumped to his feet, “Demon! There’s a demon!”
People began to rush about all over. The men of the village ran toward the scene while the women and children rushed away and hid behind their husbands and fathers. The men armed themselves with guns blades and various other tools meant for gardening. “Monster! What are you doing in our village!?”
One of the men who appeared to be the injured woman’s eldest son came forward to confront Sesshoumaru head on, “How dare you attack my mother?! I’ll kill you, Beast! You don’t deserve to live!”
Sesshoumaru’s eyes flickered away from the horizon for the first time as the young man threatened him. “Attacking such a lowly imbecile is not worth my time, but if you persist I will be left with no other choice.” he said warningly. The boy anchored his feet and rose his scythe toward the youkai as friends gathered around him readying their weapons as well., “Well you don’t have much time left , Demon, so you better make your peace!”
Sesshoumaru sneered at the humans and stood up to his full height, “You’re all bothersome fools.” He lifted his luminous green talons and began to step down from the porch. Then a shout came from behind him, “No! Stop it all of you!” As that happened a gun went off and Sesshoumaru reacted instantaneously, throwing his whip of light out to catch the bullet and throw it back at it’s attacker. The man fell holding his bleeding thigh and screaming in pain.
Kagome ran off and stepped in front of the demon lord, “Please don’t fight them! I beg you!”
The crowd grew apprehensive, “Woman are you mad! He’s a demon! He’d just as soon kill you as look at you!”
Kagome turned her back to the demon going toward the crowd and threw her arms out in a defensive position, “He won’t hurt any of you if you just leave him alone! Please! You don’t know who you’re dealing with!” The youkai lifted a puzzled eyebrow as he looked at the desperate miko.
The mob started shouting and hollering, “You don’t think we’ll let that monster stay in our village just like that, do you!? You must be a demon too to be standing so near him and for him not to attack you! Demon bitch! We’ll kill you too!” another gun went off and Sesshoumaru jumped toward the priestess and grabbed her from behind, intending to pull her out of it’s path, but the gun’s range was too close, and he couldn’t clear it. Kagome’s eyes went wide as she saw her own blood fly past her face.
The demon lord snarled fiercely as his eyes bleed over red with anger, “I’m sorry to say you’ve all caught me in a rather bad mood. So I hope you’ve all made your peace with God!” he said as withdrew Toukajin and pointed it toward the mass of people. They began to loose their courage as the demon lord lost his temper and they started to run. Kagome grabbed his arm and held it tightly trying to shift the sword’s path, “Please don’t! Please!” her blood coated his arm where she held him, and he let out a heart wrenching growl, “Damn it, woman! They shot you and still you protect them!”
Inuyasha, Sango, and Miroku finally came out from all the noise and were stunned to see the sight that was presented. Inuyasha made a ‘b’ line for the two of them, intending to save Kagome from the youkai’s aggression, but she yelled out a quick, “OSUWARI” before he reached them, which made the demon lord quirk and eyebrow. He looked back to her, noticing moisture trickle down her face. He lowered his sword, and Kagome fell to her knees, “I’ve never understood her, and I don’t understand you either. I don‘t know which one is the fool here.” he then turned and went into the house, throwing the bamboo curtain out of the way with a hot temper. Sango and Miroku jumped out of his way with haste.
Inuyasha crawled over to the miko and growled angrily, “Damn it, woman. He could have killed you!” She sniffled some and nodded. The hanyou then noticed her bloodied shoulder, “What happened? He didn’t-”
“No” she said before he finished. “It was one of the villagers… he saved me.” She muttered holding the painful wound.
Inuyasha sighed, “Come on. It needs to be patched.” He picked her up gently and carried her back into the doctor’s home, shaking his head at how troublesome the doctor must think they were. The monk and taijiya followed their friends, worrying over the miko’s condition.

Sesshoumaru sat against the wall watching the sleeping Rin on the other side of the room. He was remembering what one of the villagers had said. ‘You don’t deserve to live!’ The phrase kept echoing through his mind and he lowered his head a bit, staring at his bloodied hand, where he had tried to catch the bullet for the miko, but had failed. The bullet hole went through to the other side, but it had already began to close back up. He began to wonder if he had placed to much pride in himself in his earlier years. If perhaps, he had been wrong to put so much value on his own honor and strength, and not enough on things that were irreplaceable… like his Rin… He dipped his head lower and closed his exhausted eyes.
A tiny voice woke him from his daze, “Sesshoumaru-sama…” He saw the young girl on her feet, reaching out to the nothingness she saw in every direction. He muttered her name and she turned toward his voice and began to slowly walk toward him. He started to get up, but the young girl had already reached him by then. He put his good hand on her side, letting her know he was there, and she went down to her knees, feeling for his position and curling her tiny body up in his lap. He placed his arms around her protectively and relaxed a bit as he stroked her hair reassuringly.
“I love you, Sesshoumaru-sama…” she muttered as she dug her petite fingers into the folds of his kimono.
He felt his heart sink and pulled her closer to him, bending over her to embrace her, like he never had before. The little girl looked puzzled for a minute, but put her arms around her adopted father with a genuine devotion in her touch. She felt a droplet of moisture hit her cheek and felt her own useless eyes begin to water. “Sesshoumaru-sama…?”
His deep voice came out a bit unevenly, “Forgive me, Rin. I’ll never let anyone hurt you again.”
The child tangled her miniature digits in his silvery hair and laid her cheek on his shoulder as she felt him slowly begin to rock her back and forth. “I trust you.” she muttered softly into his neck.
