Chapter 6
...Caught
Kagome sighed out a breath as tense muscles loosened. She lifted her leg from the barre, placed the other one on the top rung and leaned forward.
“If you are done warming up, Mademoiselle Kagome, we shall begin.”
Kagome turned to see her instructor, a thin reed of a woman who was all muscle and sinew, Madame Tatienne -whose students affectionately called Madame Tati- breezing into the classroom. She began setting up the music, her soft soled shoes making soft, whispery noises across the floor, her knee-length wrap skirt flowing around her like a black butterfly caught in the wind.
Kouga joined Kagome in the center of the room while the other students lounged in the corner. She and Kouga would be performing a section from “Swan Lake.” Kagome had been thrilled when she had been chosen to dance the pas de deux as Odette. She had stayed late at the studio, practicing until her legs felt like rubber.
As soon as Madame said something about her extensions, Kagome knew this would be a bad rehearsal. And when her pas de chat looked more like ostrich steps than cat steps, Kagome nearly growled in frustration. She redeemed herself by not over-rotating her body when Kouga caught her in a fish dive from his shoulder.
Madame Tati berated her after class, of course.
“I do not even know where it is I should begin,” her instructor said. “Your extensions were sloppy, your glissès looked as though you were tripping instead of gliding.” Madame shook her head, her hair not even daring to move out of place. “Your last jump was good, however. The best one you’ve done all year, no?”
“I’ve been working on it,” Kagome said, somewhat meekly. This tiny Frenchwoman with the booming voice of a drill sergeant intimidated her on the best of days.
“As you should be,” the woman said. “Now, chassè your way out of here, mademoiselle. And, I think it would be best if, on Wednesday, you leave your life outside the door.” Madame smiled kindly at Kagome’s surprised expression. “I know how hard it is, to be your age, to have something besides school on your mind. Next time, I want to see a smile on your lips and counting in your eyes! You are to be a swan princess, yes? We cannot have you looking like a fumbling child.” Madame made a shooing gesture. “Get out of here, mademoiselle! I expect a swan princess when you return!”
Kagome returned Madame’s smile as she wrapped her flowing green skirt around her white leotard and tights, grabbed her bag and bolted out the door, Pointe shoes around her neck.

Kagome adjusted her fedora with a grimace. She had not been able to talk Kaede out of canceling tonight’s show. She had tried to tell the woman that she was still sick, but Kaede seemed to have unimaginable resources.
“You are not sick, child,” the old woman had said. “You are merely avoiding the inevitable.” Before Kagome could reply, the line had gone dead.
So, in order to make herself more comfortable with the situation, she had suggested -a little nervously- that Kouga and Ginta come watch.
“It’s just a dance,” Kagome chanted to herself under her breath, as she stuck on last pin into place. “It’s not even like you strip. You just dance.” She wasn’t sure if she was more nervous that her friends and classmates were in the audience or of the possibility of Inuyasha Takahashi being out there.
“Talking to yourself again?”
Kagome smiled wryly at Sango’s reflection. “Yeah and answering myself. I’ve officially lost it.” Sango laughed and then her expression became serious. “I don’t even want to know, Sango,” Kagome said, before her friend could open her mouth.
Sango shrugged. “I was just going to tell you that I saw Kouga and that wolf boy of his sitting front and center. They send their luck.”
“What, no provocative remarks?” Kagome asked as she stood and made sure that her boots were laced tight enough.
“Oh, yeah, they sent those too, but I decided to edit them out,” Sango said, laughing. They both heard the crowd go silent and still. Sango pulled Kagome into a brief hug. “Go shake it, girl,” she said, pushing Kagome toward the stage and swatting her lightly on the ass.
*
Kagome laughed at Kouga as he tried to pull her on the dance floor with him.
“Don’t you think I’ve danced enough tonight?” she yelled, over the loud music.
Kouga leered at her. “Not with me!” was his reply. “Come on, beautiful, shake your ass for me again!”
Kagome left her drink at the bar, letting Kouga tug her onto the dance floor. The band, whose music Kagome had just recently fell in love with, kicked into their next song, the lead singer jumping around the stage. Kagome laughed again, starting to sing at the top of her lungs -knowing she wouldn’t be heard over the music- dancing with as much abandon as the girls in the band.
‘That’s not the way,
nice girls behave!
Oh, yeah, I know,
Ya told me!’
Kouga, having accomplished his goal of forcing her to have fun, left her to her own devices, finding Ayame in the crowd and smothering her with affection until the wolf girl smacked him away.
Kagome looked over at the bar and waved at Sango. The tall brunette smiled and waved back and then returned to her conversation with a man who was sitting next to her. Kagome, content to know that her friends were having as much fun as she was, backed away intending to lose herself more deeply in the undulating crowd.
‘Is this the way,
nice girls should play?
I’ve gotta say,
I don’t care.’
A hard, solid wall behind her caused her to stumble. She felt hands close around her upper arms in a firm grip, steadying her. As she regained her balance, she felt a hard chest press against her back, felt the person behind her lean forward and put his head next to hers.
“You’ve been avoiding me, little girl.”
Kagome went rigid, feeling her heart stop for an instant at the low, husky voice before it resumed its function at a much faster pace. His hands slid down her arms, wrapped themselves around her, pulling her tighter against himself. She immediately tilted her head down, her bangs covering her eyes and casting her face into shadow.
She felt him sigh. “Would you like a drink?” he asked. “I have a table upstairs we can sit at.” He paused. “Or, you can dance for me here.”
She started to nod her head, felt her acceptance start to whisper itself past her lips.
“No,” she said. She struggled in his hold, stumbling away from him in surprise when he let her go.
He gripped her wrist before she could slip away into the crowd. “What are you so afraid of, little girl?” he asked, pulling her back to him, turning her to face him. “I don’t bite. At least not hard. You don’t have to-”
‘It’s over,
Ya told me,
And you don’t wanna to know me!
Alone now,
I know that,
You’re never gonna get me down!’
Inuyasha’s words died in his throat as a beam of roaming light fell across the face of the woman before him. Kagome saw his eyes widen, saw his whole expression crumble into confusion and pain.
“Kikyo?”
‘Can’t get me down!’
It was nothing more than a whisper, but she heard it, heard how his voice broke. She yanked her arm out of his now limp grasp and back away from him.
“You must have me confused with someone else,” she said, coldly, glaring at him. Her body sent off waves of heat in an angry flush. How dare he touch her as if they were close friends? As if they were lovers? A very small part of Kagome’s brain whispered to her that, had the circumstances of their meeting been different, they would have technically been dating for about three months now.
That technicality was quickly squashed, ground violently underfoot, and kicked away.
The golden-eyed man before her continued to stare, a shattered, betrayed expression in his eyes, and Kagome felt a small piece of something within her break as well.
He was still standing where Kagome had left him when she paused to look over her shoulder from the exit. His head was bent, the shadows from his bangs hiding his eyes as beams of colored light turned his silvery hair brilliant shades of red, blue, and pink. Kagome took a deep breath and shoved her way out of the club, trying to deny that she felt anything for this man who had become so much more to her than he should have.
A/N: This chapter does need a disclaimer (I just didn’t want to put it at the beginning ^_^) The lyrics are not mine, they belong to a band called Lo-Ball, an all girl rocker band, who, I believe, may be crazy...which makes me love their music so much more ^_^
Hope you liked the chapter ^_^ I hope there wasn’t confusion over what was being sung. Thanks to everyone who has reviewed. It makes me so happy to know that I’ve attracted people to this story that normally wouldn’t read something like this (a stripper, AU story). That’s such a great compliment! Thank you!
