For the second time in as many days, Lilian woke to the strange chamber in the halls of the one who called himself Sesshoumaru. Plagued by odd dreams, she felt no better for her rest. Strange visions of landscapes unfamiliar to her, hordes massing on the rise, skies darkened by storm clouds. Bolts of blue power spiraling and crackling. Was this what the world held for her? If her dreams were anything to go by, she didn’t want to know. The door swung open and she pulled the coverlet to her chest, looking at woman of advanced years. Her long white hair caught up in an intricate fashion. “You are awake at last Mekharat” she said. Lilian blinked in confusion, “Who are you?”. The other woman smiled kindly, “I am the high priestess of the Alliance, the light to the demon’s dark” she replied cryptically. Lilian decided then and there that she didn’t like this woman. Something about her made the hairs on the back of her neck rise. She watched as the woman moved without sound to take a seat beside the large bed. “I am called Shiziru” she said at length, “and it is because of me that you are here, in the care of the champions”. Lilian swung her legs over the side of the bed, but Shiziru stopped her with a gesture, “Bonding is difficult on humans” she warned, “Better to rest a bit longer”. Lilian shoved herself to her feet, swayed and sat back down. “What happened to me?”. Shiziru sighed, “You are now bonded to the champions of the Alliance, well two of them at least. The demonic blood is altering your own, you’ll feel the effects of that for several days”. Lilian shivered, recalling the exchange, “Demonic blood?” she asked. The wizened miko nodded, “You were told of the two worlds. The realm of humans and the realm of youki. Very little separates the two actual worlds. If the barrier between the worlds were to fall, and the alliance thrown aside, humans would suffer for it”. Lilian pressed the heel of her hand to her brow, “None of this makes sense. I don’t understand at all. There is nothing remarkable about me, nothing special I can do. I can barely save myself most days, I can’t save the world”. Shiziru rose and sat beside her, wrapping a comforting arm around her shoulders. “From the dawn of time, youkai ruled. However humans have taken the spotlight and there are many in the dark realms who wish to change that. There are many kinds of souls born into the two worlds. Those that live and let live, and those who live to let die. These angry souls clamor for battle and bloodshed, they need it you see?” she asked. Lilian shrugged, “I guess so, but I don’t know what any of that has to do with me”. The elder nodded, again, “There have always been champions for both sides. Usually quite equally matched, however there is, on rare occasions, the Mekharat. You. The outworlder, who belongs in neither place but must choose. Either you will unite the worlds or tear them asunder”. Lilian shook her head, “That’s just crazy”. Shiziru rose to stand over her, “Give me your hand” she commanded. Lilian slowly reached out towards her and the crone snatched her hand in a viselike grip. Pain rocketed through Lilian, so intense that she could not speak, could not draw breath and through it all, the woman spoke. “The curse of the Mekharat. To feel the pain of the ones that went before, to offer life for life and death for death. The choosing of the heavens and the earth. The outworlder. You are not of this world, no matter what your eyes show you, or your ears tell you. You are not completely human but you are not demon either. You who walk the line between. Open your eyes and know thy name!” Light exploded around them, filling the room with a roar of wind and Lilian threw her head back, screaming in her agony. Her heart felt as though it would burst, as countless lives spiraled before her. Each one stolen far too early for the name of peace. “No!” she shouted. And then it was gone, the light, the wind, the sound. Nothing remained of the pain, only the gaze of the old woman remained unwavering and locked on her. Lilian lay panting on the floor, covered in sweat and shivering. Her palms burned and she tore her eyes away from the woman to focus on them. They were red but otherwise unharmed. She flexed them, hissing when pain returned. “That is the power of the Mekharat” Shiziru told her, “You must be trained”. Lilian staggered to her feet, “Trained? What trained?” she demanded. She was angry and frightened and she didn’t like it one bit. The old miko studied her, “Are you, I wonder, up to the challenge before you?”. Lilian understood on some level that she was being tested. “You tell me” she said in a hard voice. Shiziru grunted, “War is not unknown to you, and you have no taste for it”. Lilian narrowed her violet eyes, “If killing people for the sake of politics is your game then more power to you. I have a lingering respect for life”. Shiziru’s white brow lifted slightly, “All life or only human?” she asked. Lilian didn’t hesitate, “Everyone and everything deserves the right to live”. The old miko was silent for a long time and Lilian stared her down, unwilling to back down an inch. Shiziru tapped the large jewel on her ring. “The life of a Mekharat is not easy, nor is it long” she said at last. “There have been exceptions of course, as there are with all things. The last Mekharat lived for nearly three hundred years, of course she was bound to a demon” she murmured. Lilian leapt at that, “Go find her then”. Shiziru shook her head, “Alas she is dead. Killed by her own mate in a frenzy. He was beside himself and had to be sealed after that”. “So what kind of training does a Mekharat need? Not that I am saying I will do this, I’m just curious” Lilian pointed out. Shiziru considered the question, “Weapons of course, and you’d have to learn to harness the powers you have. Intense training. You’d have to learn to fight youkai and humans on a magical battlefield not a modern one. We can begin tomorrow at dawn. Sesshoumaru is a master at all weaponry, Youko a master of potions and poisons. The rest will be taught between them. They have done it before” Lilian watched as she rose and moved across the room, “I never said I would do this” she reminded her. Shiziru chuckled, “But of course you will child, it’s in your blood, besides you want to belong”. Then she pulled the door open and was gone. Lilian sank to the carpet, her hands still burning and her mind spinning. She cursed the woman. How dare she? But she was right. Lilian did want to belong, more than anything. She always had. ----------------------- She stared at the carpet, reflecting on those things that had been shown to her. She barely heard the door open, didn’t see Youko cross the room to stand beside her. “I imagine that it is a great deal to take in so quickly” he said softly. She blinked and looked up at him, violet eyes clouded with unshed tears. “I want to go home” she whispered. Youko smiled gently, “You are home”. Her head dropped and her shoulders shook. Youko watched her in silence, uncertain what he might say that could help her. Usually, he didn’t care one way or another, Mekharat were there to train and then to fight. Somehow, she was different. “What is the meaning of this?” Sesshoumaru asked from the doorway. Youko cocked his head towards the weeping woman, “I think she’s upset” he said, sarcasm lacing his voice. “She wants to go home”. Sesshoumaru’s golden eyes narrowed, “She is home”. Youko nodded, his silver tail swishing lightly, “So I have told her”. Lilian listened to them for a moment longer, “You knew her?” she asked in a jagged whisper, “You trained the last one?”. Sesshoumaru waited until she looked at him to answer, “Yes, I did”. Lilian sniffed, “And you knew didn’t you? Knew she was going to die?”. Sesshoumaru strode across the room, reaching down and catching her arm, dragging her upright, “I did and so did she. In fact she knew the very manner of her death and yet she still chose her path. Like every Mekharat before her”. His golden eyes were emotionless, and it angered her. He knew it, and was relieved by it. An angry woman could be taught to fight, to try and change that which she didn’t like. An inconsolable and defeated one couldn’t. “Now you have a choice Mekharat” he growled to her, “You can live and watch the world die or you can face death and give life to the world. Just because you go into battle does not mean that you must die there”. She shoved away from him, “And one as cold as you would know that?” she spat at him. Youko leaned casually against the wall, enjoying the small battle of wills occurring before him. Sesshoumaru was many things but foolish was not one of them. He would use whatever means at hand to motivate another to fight. Sesshoumaru towered over her small form, his golden eyes narrowed. “If you wish for me to care then you must give me a reason Mekharat” he stated. She lunged at him, “Damn you! My name is Lilian. Say it!”. She connected with the demon’s chest and he flung her back, only to her have her advance again. “You are the Mekharat, woman, nothing more and nothing less” he told her stoically, “And I shall make of you a fighter to champion the worlds”. She stopped fighting him, stared at him in wonder. What was this feeling? Like sunlight rippling under her skin, she felt so light and then she began to glow. “What is this?” she asked him. He grunted, “The mark of the Mekharat. Your powers respond to my youki. They sense the beast within me and seek to tame or tear.” Lilian paced before him, “Tame or tear?” she asked. Sesshoumaru nodded, “The Mekharat will seek allies carefully among the strong. Those that cannot be tamed or trusted must be destroyed”. Lilian looked into his eyes, trying to read something there, anything. “Which one are you?” she asked. Sesshoumaru let his youki brush against her powers, “I cannot be tamed, nor can I be torn. You must decide whether I am to be trusted or not” he replied. Lilian looked from him to Youko and back again, “I….. I feel that I can trust you to train me” she whispered. The glow slowly receded from her form and she stared at her hands in wonder before blinking back at Sesshoumaru and Youko.“Good, you’ve learned one lesson already” he told her.

“Inuyasha don’t be a jerk” Kagome scolded her mate. The hanyou glared over his shoulder at her. “I don’t see why we gotta go. I am not gonna be the damn champion and that’s that” he barked.
Kagome flicked his ear, “We have to help the new Mekharat Inuyasha. She is there with Youko and Sesshoumaru, with no one else. She could probably use someone to talk to”. Inuyasha grunted, “Youko will probably wanna sleep with her, and Sesshoumaru will probably be his usual pompous ass self and make her wish she’d never been born” he grumbled. Kagome smiled brightly, “See? That’s the spirit!”. Inuyasha's grumblings continued for several more minutes before he gave over with a grumpy 'Keh'.While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
