Title: The Crow
Author: Pucie
Chapter: Kagome's Lament
A/N: Ok so, I haven't decided if we shall have an angsty sad type ending, or a bittersweet happy ending. I noticed someone mentioned that in the reviews. I just havent't decided yet. I do have the last chapter typed up, but I keep going back and revising it. Lol Thanx you luna cat for pointing out the "puppydog ears" slip up! I completely missed that somehow. . .it has been fixed. And thank you, everyone who takes the time to review! *sniffles* I wuv you guys! The song in this chapter is : Sally's Song: by danny elfman, it's from Tim Burton's: Nightmare Before Christmas. I was listening to the version performed by Fiona Apple. Let me know how you like you like the new chapter.
Author's Warning!: You'll need some kleenex for this chapter. I got emotional when I was writing it. Listen to the song while you read it, I really 'felt' this chapter because of it. I swear I'm not this depressing in real life, though!!

Kagome's Lament
~Somewhere on the streets~
Kagome was deep in thought as she made her way home in the rain. She was trying to keep her mind off of Inuyasha, so instead she focused on this 'ball' she was going to be attending with Sesshoumaru.
'What should I wear, aw, damn, I forgot to ask if it is going to be casual or formal. Shit!' she thought to herself.
'Oh god, I don't know any of these people, what am I gonna say? What am I gonna do? Me in a room full of youkai?' she thought starting to panic slightly.
Kikyo had shown her how to do some things with her powers, but it took so long for her to master each skill that Kikyo had never been able to show her how to keep buzzing feeling she felt whenever she was around a demon, well, she had never shown her how to keep it down to a dull roar in the back of her mind. It was one of the things they had been working on right before she had died. At the thought of her friends, her feelings became depressed again, as well as panicky.
'One or two at a time is not bad, but a whole house full? My miko powers are gonna ping me right off the map!' she thought going into full out panic mode.
So caught up as she was in her thoughts, she didn't see the oncoming car headed straight for her as she crossed the street.
~On the rooftops~
He flew over the rooftops towards Kagome's apartment.
He had gotten the address from his brother's address book. It had been laying on the coffee table in his living room. As soon as his brother had gone to the kitchen, he flipped through it until he had found her address.
He recognized it, he realized. It was just a few buildings down from where he and Kikyo had used to live.
Once he had it memorized, he had quickly put the book back where he had found it, and made his way out the window and up the fire escape.
He was traveling by rooftop, after the agonizing session when he had been forced to remember his and Kikyo's deaths, he decided this was the safest way to get around. He wanted that bastard Naraku to know he was back, just not quite yet.
He found that now, he could also see whatever the crow saw. It was flying over the street, keeping an eye out in case there was anybody lurking around who shouldn't be.
He was only a couple of blocks from Kagome's apartment building, when he saw her.
She wasn't paying attention to her surroundings, and had just started to turn into the path of a car.
He had to get to her before she was run down in the street. He hadn't planned on getting that close to her.
He didn't know how either of them would react if that happened, but as they say, "The best laid plans of mice and men. . ."
He dove off the building into the alley below, and raced out into the street. Running as fast as possible after the slight figure of the girl ahead of him.
~Down in the Street~
Kagome heard a car horn honk, quickly pulling her from her thoughts, and her head jerked up at the sudden sound.
'Oh shit, I'm gonna DIE!' as she thought this, she felt a strong pair of arms quickly wrap around her waist and pull her from danger.
She was dragged to the sidewalk, and whomever had her let go.
"STUPID JACKASS!" she yelled at the retreating black Thunderbird.
"They wouldn't have had time to stop, you should be more careful." She heard a deep, familiar voice say from behind her.
She jumped when she heard her savior speak. That voice. . . . .it sounded so familiar. . . . . .she could feel with her miko powers that whoever it was that saved her, was a full youkai. Even his youkai aura felt familiar, and somehow comforting. Who was he?
She slowly turned around, but was disappointed to see that he had retreated back into the alley, and in the fog and the rain, she couldn't make out what he looked like.
She stepped closer to him and said, "Thank you."
"Feh, it was nothing,"
With those words her heart stopped, and she felt the blood drain from her face.
Her world started going in and out of focus.
There was no way.
He was dead.
It was impossible.
And yet. . . . .
I sense there's something in the wind. . . .
He watched from the shadows as a look of recognition entered her eyes. She raised her hand and walked forward as if in a daze. The closer she got to him, the more he wanted to go to her.
But knew that he couldn't, it would be so sick and wrong of him to give her false hope. He inched backwards slowly, and felt his back press up against a brick wall.
He had nowhere else to go, and yet. . . . there was nowhere else he wanted to be.
He was suddenly overcome by an unknown feeling, he felt an intense tingling feeling sweep through his body, the closer she got, the stronger it got.
All he could do was watch as she continued moving closer. . . .
That seems like Tragedy's at hand. . . .
She kept moving slowly forward, almost afraid of what she would find at the end of her journey. But wanting more than ever to see who he was, this demon standing before her.
Tears started to make their way down her delicate face, and she whispered his name, deathly frightened that her mind might be playing tricks on her once again.
And though I'd like to stand by him. . . .
She had dreamed of seeing him again so many times. She had been haunted by his memory in her dreams.
She had even gone through a period where every person she passed on the street had looked like either him or Kikyo. She found it suddenly hurt to breathe. . . .
Can't shake this feeling that I have. . . .
"Inuyasha" his sensitive ears caught his name on the whispered exhalation. He looked at her, really looked at her, and couldn’t remember her being so womanly.
He knew it had been a while since he had seen her, but damn.
She no longer resembled the skinny beanpole he remembered,
in her place stood a woman more beautiful than any he'd seen before.
He took a deep breath, and realized something that shook him to the very core of his being, his scent was intertwined with hers.
But that only happened, that only happened if. . . .
The worst is just around the bend. . . .
She finally got close enough to see his face. It looked like Inuyasha, but this was a full demon that stood before her now. Inu had only been half. . . .
She had known it. .
She was imagining things again. . .ever so slowly, her hand dropped back by her side as tears filled her eyes. . . .
Her closed, and she took a deep shuddering breath, it had been so long since this had happened, she had really thought she was getting better. A small sob escaped her throat as she whispered the mantra her therapist had made her say over and over again, whenever she had an episode. "Not real, he's not real, he's dead, they are dead and buried, gone to a better place"
Sesshoumaru had forced her to go to a shrink after her suicide attempt, she had found to her surprise that it had helped with her grief. Didn't mean it didn't hurt beyond words whenever she had a relapse like this, though.
"Not real, he's not real, they are dead and buried, gone to a better place."
She suddenly balled her fists and her mouth opened in a silent scream of unending anguish.
And does he notice? My feelings for him?
He watched her as she closed her eyes and murmured, "Not real, he's not real, they are dead and buried, gone to a better place."
He watched as she tried to get herself together, and failed, and she repeated the words again, "Not real, he's not real, they are dead and buried, gone to a better place."
When he saw her face contort in so much pain, he couldn't take it any longer. He couldn't bear to see her in so much pain, and know that he was the cause.
Without even realizing it, he reached out and caressed her cheek with the palm of his hand, "Oh, Kagome, I'm so sorry. . . ."
And will he see? How much he means to me?
Her breath caught in her throat at the touch and she opened her eyes disbelievingly. When she heard his quiet apology, she started.
Never had she ever imagined him, touching her. . . . . speaking to her, and she realized, she couldn't have imagined him saving her either.
He was real. . . .
She rushed forward and shouted, "INUYASHA!" Hot tears flowed in a steady stream down her face. As soon as she reached him, she wrapped her arms around him as tightly as she possibly could, and buried her face in his neck.
And she felt her spirits fall when he didn't return her embrace.
I think it's not to be. . .
He was stunned when he felt her arms around his waist, and found that he couldn't move for a few moments. He could smell the return of her sadness on the air, as he was finally able to bring his arms to crush her tightly to his form.
Gods, how he had missed her. He had to tell her something though, he didn't want to give her false hope for his future.
"Kagome," he said as he buried his face in her hair. He placed his mouth close to her ear, so that only she could hear, even though they were the only people in sight.
"I don't know how long I am going to be allowed to stay. I know that I am back to seek justice for the crimes commited against Kikki and I. But. . .I don't know if I will be able to stick around for very long after that. Once I get rid of Naraku, and his thugs, I think I have to go back. . . ." he murmured softly.
What will become of my dear friend?
He was real. Really real. She tightened her arms at his words. She had just regained her most precious friend in the world, and he wouldn't even be able to stay.
She never wanted to let him go. . .
Where will his actions lead us in?
Even though she knew this to be an extremely selfish action, she found she didn't care anymore.
She only knew that now that he was back, she felt whole. She felt a completeness to her soul that she hadn't felt in the past year since his death.
Maybe if I hold on tight enough, I can make him stay,
she thought desperately.
Although I'd like to join the crowd,
He felt her grip tighten, and realized he felt a sense of completeness. He'd never felt this way with Kikyo. . . .ever. A thought which brought him back to the question of her scent.
He remembered the day his father had explained demon mating habits to him, the only time a youkai's scent would bond with any other person's were if either they had already mated. . . .
Or if not mated, it meant that the demon beast had found it's soulmate. . .
'Kagome' he thought. . .
He placed his hand under her chin and gently pulled her head up. She removed her arms and caressed his cheek, "You're really here" she said quietly.
"Yes, I'm really here, and your soul calls to me."
He looked down at her startled expression and leaned down to brush his lips tenderly over her own.
in their enthusiastic cloud.
To say she was surprised would be an understatement. She felt his lips press down harder, and he slid his hand around to cradle the back of her skull and pull her even closer to him.
She gasped at the move, and he took advantage of the situation to plunge his tongue into the depths of her mouth, and he left no corner unsearched.
She returned his passion with a fire of her own she hadn't even known existed.
Try as I may it doesn't last. . . .
He felt a sudden surge of guilt, he couldn't do this to her, to her or Kikyo. He realized that he even though he still felt love for Kikyo, it had never been anything like this. And as he examined the past, he saw that he had always been drawn to Kagome, for reasons beyond his understanding. But, still, this wasn't fair to Kagome. For him to lead her on like they could actually start a relationship.
Start a relationship and be happy. He gave one last sweep of her mouth with his tongue and gently withdrew from her kiss and her embrace. He twisted away from the brick wall and slowly backed away from her.
"Kagome, forgive me. I don't want to hurt you. Know this though, even though we can never be together. . . I will always love you," his voice broke on the last few words, and he felt the tears streaming freely once again.
Quickly he leapt away into the coming night. . .
And will we ever end up together. . .
Kagome felt the loss of his presence, his warmth, his light. . . .his love, like a thirst that can never be quenched. Was he ever really there, or was this just the latest trick her mind could come with?
She reached her hand out to the brick wall in front of her, and felt warmth, his warmth. .
'So it wasn't just a dream,' she thought to herself. The thought only brought her further pain.
The only man she would ever love. . . .
The only man she would ever want. . . .
Was a only a phantom of her dying and broken heart. . . .
No, I think not,
It's never to become,
For I am not the one
