Disclaimer: I do not own InuYasha, nor make money from this story. |
I do not own Inuyasha and Company, no matter how happy it would make me. Rumiko Takahashi is the lucky one there. I do not profit from these stories, unless sweet reviews, supportive emails, and shiny banners count. I think they’re worth more far than money though, so let just go with I do not profit financially from these stories.
This chapter was written for Skye's Bi-Weekly Challenges on Dokuga. The prompt: SearchChapter 6 – SearchHe spent nearly an entire week locked in his room, refusing to even speak to anyone on the other side of the door. He didn’t really know what he was hiding from. All he knew was that he wasn’t ready. Inuyasha had announced that they knew what happened to Kagome in an attempt to lure his brother out of his self-imposed prison. His father had offered to explain exactly what had caused her to lose consciousness, and what it meant in the long run, if only he would come down for dinner. Several friends had dropped by to invite him to this party, or that club, or concert. No one succeeded. There wasn’t anything that anyone could say or do to get him to come out, with one very specific exception, of course. If Kagome had been on the other side of the door he would have been out in a flash. Even news about a change in her condition might have done it, but none came, and so he stayed, simply reliving that wonderful and horrible day, processing his thoughts, and trying to make some kind of sense out of his feelings. When Sesshoumaru finally managed to drag himself out of bed he found the house in disarray. His father, Inuyasha, and what seemed like every family friend, and servant they ever had were sitting here and there, everywhere, reading through ancient-looking books and scrolls that covered every available surface. When the hanyou noticed his presence, he snorted in frustration, following it quickly with a sneezing fit. “Damn dust,” he grumbled under his breath. “You finally come to help or are you planning on continuing to be absolutely useless?”“Inuyasha,” the elder taiyoukai growled in a low warning tone. “Now is not the time.” He turned, his shoulders slumping minutely as he took in the appearance of his usually flawlessly groomed first-born. Where shimmering strands of glowing moonlight once were now hung tangles of dull gray twine. Eyes that should have looked like pools of molten gold had been replaced with faded, old pennies. He hadn’t even bothered to dress, instead pulling on a pair of pajama pants that had been lying on the floor all week. He knew that what had happened with Kagome had affected Sesshoumaru, but he never imagined just how much.~!~ A Miko's Pet ~!~
He was beyond pissed when he learned what had happened to cause the situation Kagome was now in. Her family had done this to her, hidden information from her, setting her up for a catastrophic moment that he was unlucky enough to trigger. If only she had known then things could have been different. It didn’t matter to him what she was, and he was sure he would have been attracted to her anyway, but they could have been more careful. Had he known what was hiding inside her he would never have been so aggressive. He would have kept himself from biting her. They could have been together. As it was, though, things weren’t looking good.
Sesshoumaru threw himself into the search for a solution, anything that could undo the damage her family’s good intentions had wrought. He wasn’t doing it for them. He knew they still believed he forced himself on her, and what had occurred only happened because she needed to be protected from him. That knowledge stung even more than the thought that he might never get to see her again. It was that thought that kept him going. He had to find something that would fix things so that they could be together. It felt like he was slowly drowning without her, and he knew he would simply die if he didn’t find the answer.Book after book yielded nothing, but he refused to give up. He couldn’t accept that he would never be able to sit beside her, smell her scent, look into her eyes, or hold her in his arms. He couldn’t. There had to be something hidden in a book or scroll somewhere that would tell them what to do for her. The gods weren’t so cruel as to finally allow him to have her only to rip her away again.~!~ A Miko's Pet ~!~
If he hadn’t already been concerned for his son’s mental health, he definitely was by now. Since coming out of his room, the young taiyoukai hadn’t slept a wink. His hands were filthy from the dusty, old books, and his hair had spider webs stuck in it. Never before had he seen Sesshoumaru so lax in his personal grooming. He had barely eaten since emerging from his room. Toshimaru was just about to drag his son away from his stack of books when he heard a whoop of celebration.

Sesshoumaru finally found something. It wasn’t the answer they were looking for, but it would make it possible for Inuyasha to be in her presence again. At least he hoped it would. It was a good thing, too, because they were running out of books and scrolls to search. Excited voices rang through the house as he read the ancient text aloud. It wasn’t a guarantee but it was a chance, and that was better than nothing at all. A chance meant hope. Hope could keep you going where uncertainty could drive you mad. Hope could turn the whole thing around, but hope could also come crashing down around you and of course, it did.
Sure, the newfound information was wonderful for Inuyasha, and it was good for Kagome, as well. At least she wouldn’t have to lose her best friend along with having her entire world turned upside-down and inside out. It didn’t do Sesshoumaru a damn bit of good, though. It did, however, end his funk. He had done the confusion thing and the depression thing. He went through the keeping busy thing and the hope thing. Now, he skipped ahead to the moving on thing, with the help of a chat with his father, who gave it to him straight. It was over. What difference did it make how he truly felt about her or what might have happened if they had done things differently? What point was there in mulling over what could have been? She was forever out of his reach now. She might as well be dead. Why mourn the loss of something he never really had in the first place? It obviously wasn’t meant to be or this would never have happened. They weren’t destined for each other after all. They were as over as over could be.Too bad his father was a big fat liar. So, he left. He couldn’t stay in that house anymore and he couldn’t go home either. Both places did nothing but constantly remind him of what had happened. The house they shared was still filled with her scent. Even his bed smelled like her since it hadn’t been slept in since that night she’d come creeping into his room afraid to sleep alone. Her room was still exactly as it had been that morning. Her shredded clothes remained on the floor where they had fallen during their passion. He needed to be anywhere but there.~!~ A Miko's Pet ~!~
Weeks had passed, and he still hadn’t been able to make himself go home. He called every other day, and spoke with his father, checking in on her condition, and foolishly hoping that somehow someone had figured out how to fix things. Every call ended in disappointment as his father reminded him of the cold, hard facts.
Sesshoumaru spent his nights out on the town, drinking himself stupid, and sleeping with anything that moved in an attempt to forget, and move on, but it wasn’t working. He was searching for anything to console him, only finding reminders at every turn. It felt like he was dying inside without her, and there was no way to fix it. Every second of his life was a living hell, and he couldn’t wait for it to be over.~!~ A Miko's Pet ~!~
“Any word?”
“She still hasn’t woken up, Dad. I… are you sure she’s gonna be alright? It just doesn’t make any sense!”The wait was making Inuyasha insane. The fact that he waited alone was worse. Being alone in the house he once shared with both her and his brother, not knowing when she would wake up, and not knowing where Sesshoumaru was, was wearing Inuyasha down. Her human friends could at least visit her but he couldn’t, not until she woke up, and they took advantage of Sesshoumaru’s discovery. Not being able to lay eyes on her was killing him.“I explained this to you before, son. She will sleep until her body has adjusted to the change. Judging by the strength of her barrier alone, she will be a very powerful miko when she wakes. From what her mother has told me, Kagome’s power easily rivals, if not surpasses, your brother’s strength. Imagine if Sesshoumaru’s…”A derisive snort interrupted the old taiyoukai’s explanation, but he simply ignored it and continued. He knew that the brothers were not exactly on speaking terms at the moment. Things were rather complicated, and neither son was helping the situation.“… If his powers did not develop as he aged but went from nothing to everything in one moment. It would, and does, require a period of adjustment. She will be fine, son, I promise you, though she may not be happy. It will take a great deal longer for her to adjust emotionally than it will physically.”“No fucking kidding. At least she won’t be alone. Never thought I would find a reason to be glad I’m a hanyou. I swear, if I lay eyes on that bastard I’m gonna…”“Inuyasha, it was not Sesshoumaru’s fault. I know that you understand that, even if you are too stubborn to accept it.”“If it wasn’t his fault then why the hell did he disappear like that? He hasn’t even called to see how she’s doing! I thought… I thought they would be… I dunno, good together. Instead, he fucks her, royally fucks up her life, and then bails. He’s fucking lucky he can’t get near her because if he even tried I’d rip him a new asshole.”“I cannot claim to understand why your brother left as he did or why he has not made contact since, but holding a grudge against him for something he did not consciously do, and could never have predicted, does nothing positive for anyone, especially Kagome.”Toshimaru refused to tell his younger son that the older had in fact been calling like clockwork to check up on Kagome. It would be better this way. If Kagome thought Sesshoumaru didn’t care then at least she would be able to move on, even if his son never could. The thought of both of them longing for the other killed him, but the alternative wasn’t any better, so letting her hate him was his only choice. He couldn’t allow his son to become something as disgraceful as the alternative. Sesshoumaru could never know there was another option.“If I can’t be pissed at him then who the fuck can I be pissed at?” Inuyasha snarled. “It’s gotta be someone’s fault!”“No single person is at fault for what happened. Her family did what they believed was best for her at the time. Perhaps if they had told her at some point later in life, but perhaps not. Knowing their secret still might not have prevented it from happening. It was entirely unforeseeable.”“But… if he hadn’t… he let her… if he’d kept his damn hands to himself!”“Now, now, son, you said yourself that you thought they would be good together, and I thought the same thing. We both knew of his attraction to her, and encouraged him to pursue it. We even teased him about it. From his explanation, and from your own lips, you know that she coaxed him to advance their relationship to the next level. Neither had any idea that it would end the way it did.”Inuyasha snorted again, this time holding back laughter. “Coaxed… yeah, Kagome coaxed him, that’s for sure.”“You simply need to be there for her, to help her through this traumatic change in her life. I am proud of you, son. Not many would care enough to even consider what you plan to do. If only it were so simple for every other demon she cares about. Especially your brother.”“Yeah, I’m not looking forward to telling her that part, not after they finally managed to stop dancing around each other, and go for it. It isn’t fair. It just doesn’t make sense! How do I tell her they can’t be together, and then tell her he hasn’t shown the slightest bit of interest or concern for her since? I really thought he cared about more just than getting between her legs.”“He did, Inuyasha, and he still does. I know he does. Just because he does not share his feelings with the world does not mean he has none.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
