Chapter Six: Adolescence
“You aren’t paying attention, Sesshoumaru,” the older demon admonished as she held a knife to his slim throat, “You have to use your senses. Don’t let them use you.” She slid the knife from his neck and pushed him away from her. Sesshoumaru turned to face her. He let his arms fall slack to his sides while crouching slightly. Masami watched his slim shoulder blades tense as he waited for her attack. The young demon had his silver hair tied into a high ponytail. He had grown in the eight years Masami had been training him. He now reached up to her shoulders. Although his body was still slender, it hid a mass of strong sinew and muscle. His face still retained some of the chubbiness of youth, but his chin had grown sharper. The magenta markings on his cheeks had grown darker and stretched further along his skin. Masami smirked as his breathing stilled. His face was a mask of concentration and focus. Sesshoumaru was analyzing her breathing, any subtle variation could mean she would attack. He listened for the crunch of her feet as they moved along the ground. Masami sidestepped to the left then lunged at Sesshoumaru. Sesshoumaru bend backward as a knife slid through the air above his head. Masami spun the knife in her hand and slashed downwards. Sesshoumaru caught her wrist in his hands. Masami dropped the knife in her other hand and lifted it to his throat. “Wrong,” Masami said shaking her head, “You moved too slowly, and by grabbing my wrist you lost mobility. You must always have a countermeasure. If you aren’t positive a move is going to work, you must be prepared with something else. Your opponent can never…are you listening to me Sesshoumaru?” Sesshoumaru’s body was relaxed with his head turned to the side. “Someone’s coming, Masami,” he smelled the fox demons fast approach. “You’re late, Shippo.” She rebuked. The small auburn haired demon glowered at her. “Sorry,” he grumbled. “What information do you have,” she asked getting straight to business. “Inutaisho has appeased the council of elders, some are still upset that he’s named Inuyasha as heir, but they haven’t the power to go against him.” “What of the hanyou, how is he faring?” “He’s still very weak, and I often see him in pain.” “Do the others know about this?” “So far as I can tell, not even his father is aware. Inuyasha hides his weakness in front of others.” “I see,” Masami said with an edge of sadness to her voice, “I wonder how long it will remain unnoticed.” “Masami, who is this demon,” Sesshoumaru asked. “Shippo is my most trusted spy.” The small demon’s chest puffed up as she said this, his emerald eyes sparkled happily. “He is a servant in Inutaisho’s castle. I’ve sent him to keep an eye on Inuyasha.” “Why would you care about that despicable hanyou,” Sesshoumaru asked. The iciness in his voice sent shivers down Shippo’s spine. “How dare you speak about Inuyasha that way. Who are you to say anything about him?” “This is Sesshoumaru.” Masami had to hold back a laugh when Shippo’s eyes nearly popped out of his head as he stared at the silver haired demon. “You’re Inuyasha’s half brother,” he practically yelled. He looked at him closely. “I guess you do kind of look like him.” “Don’t compare me with that monstrosity.” Masami was surprised steam wasn’t coming from his ears as Shippo stared daggers at Sesshoumaru. “Are you fond of Inuyasha,” she asked before he could yell. “No,” Shippo exclaimed fast, “He’s loud and obnoxious. He’s always hitting me, and…” “Then why do you defend him, fox,” Sesshoumaru asked. “because I’m the only one who gets to make fun of his heritage.” “I’m afraid you lost that right long ago.” Shippo pouted and folded his arms across his chest. “Have you anything else to tell me, Shippo,” Masami asked a bemused expression on her face. “Inuyasha refused another mate.” Shippo said, “She was beautiful, too. She had pink hair and eyes the color of the ocean. That’s all.” “Alright, you may return Shippo.” The fox demon bounded away happily. “Why do you send spies to look after that hanyou,” he asked with curiosity. “You disapprove,” she said, “he is your brother, aren’t you rather curious as to how he lives?” “I couldn’t care less about that hanyou.” Sesshoumaru spat, “I’ll never consider him my brother.” Masami smirked at this. “His well being is rather important at the moment. Don’t you find it interesting that he’s unwell? If his health continues to deteriorate, it will make it all the more easier for you to gain back your title.” “I have little interest in such intrigue. All I want is to rid my name of that half ningen stain.” “You never know the future holds many paths.” She said, “You may find this information useful. Inuyasha would be about the same age as you were when you left the castle. That is a crucial time. He will grow from there. I intend to watch that progression.” “Do as you wish, Masami.” “It’s curious, isn’t it?” “What’s curious?” “Inuyasha is far from being an adult. Why is Inutaisho already searching for mates?” “It a custom. When a male member of the Inu clan reaches a certain age, he must receive prospective mates. I’d already refused five brides at his age.” Masami slipped the knife into her palm, and gripped it skillfully in her hand. She lunged forward. “Good,” she exclaimed as he swept her arm away from him, and stepped back slightly. He stood rigidly. The strong features of his face where held still and steady. His eyes were held in a blank look of concentration that gave off a pervasive feeling of iciness to the outside observer. His raised posture and easy stance could be seen as cheeky optimism, yet Masami knew different. He was poised, smelling her scent, testing the air for different pressures, and listening intently. Masami moved to the balls of her feet, her legs bending slightly as she readied herself to spring forward. Sesshoumaru darted forward his body bent slightly, his clawed fingers extended toward the ground. He swept the claws across the back of the older woman’s calves. She cried out a little in pain then fell to her knees. She smiled as Sesshoumaru raised the knife he’d stolen to her throat. “Well done,” she said after he removed the knife, “You’re almost ready. The next step is for you to find some demons to play with.” I think I'll end there. This chapter ended up being alot longer than I expected. I was sort of excited to write it. How did my fight scenes turn out? Were they convincing?
