Chapter 2
Jaken and Rin returned with the setting of the sun, wood to feed the fire dropped nearby and fish for dinner. Rin's face brightened all in one look, the child running with arms spread to the object of her joyous surprise.
"Lord Sesshoumaru!" She hugged him round the neck. "You're back!" she beamed, dropping back on her heels. "Did Lady Kagura tell you? You're going to be a father!"
"Yes." He patted her back, watching as she ran to greet Kagura. "I did notice that."
What was this feeling inside him, when the girl wrapped her arms around the former wind sorceress, a kiss planted atop the child's head? There was no time for these mushier musings, Jaken fast approaching with his signature scream: Lord Sesshoumaru! He stood as his vassal came closer and, when he was within stomping range, SPLAT!
"What was that for?" groaned the imp.
"For leaving the lady unattended."
"But she was never left unattended, milord. Ah-Un was always with her."
"Ah-Un was unable to protect her."
"From what?"
"Naraku." He dug his boot deeper to Jaken's cries. "That's what."
At last freed from his master's foot, Jaken picked himself up and brushed the dirt from his robes, gathering what little composure he was capable. "I apologize, milord. I was only making sure Rin wasn't getting into any trouble."
"But I wasn't in any trouble, Master Jaken," the girl protested, turning from Kagura's motherly embrace. "You said you were sick of watching Lady Kagura grow that… what did you call it again? That 'disgrace in her womb.' It's just a baby, I don't see what it could have done wro-"
"Rin, don't you ever know when to be quie-" SPLAT! "What did I do this time?"
"Quiet, Jaken." Sesshoumaru glared from above him. "Do not let it happen again."
"Yes, my lord!"
"And, Jaken?"
"Yes, my lord?"
"In the future, I would refrain from referring to any offspring of mine as a 'disgrace.' That is, if you intend on having one. Understood?" he practically growled, shifting his full weight to the boot pinning his vassal.
"Of course, my lord," Jaken grunted, "My most humble apologies."
"I thought you might." He withdrew his foot, reclaiming his seat beside a mystified Kagura. She stared at him with bewilderment; he had, quite literally, stood up for her. Nothing the least bit spirited or even merciless as it had seemed other times he merely kicked, punched or stepped on the imp. Was this not, in some strange, violent fashion, his way of telling her I love you?
An awkward silence loomed over the group as Rin prepared the fish, spearing them with stakes and setting them to cook by the fire, the meal later eaten and fire built up in the same manner. Kagura, of perhaps greater appetite than when first welcomed as one of them, finished before the others and sat staring into space, Sesshoumaru still picking at his fish, uninterested as always in what he once dubbed 'human food.' Rin watched this dreary spectacle all the while, her childish candor surely all that could save them now.
"We brought back extra because Lady Kagura is eating for two now," she began, willing those gilded eyes to drift to hers. "But we didn't know you'd be returning today, Lord Sesshoumaru. If you don't like yours, maybe you could give the rest to her."
Sesshoumaru at last looked up, eyes shifting slowly towards Kagura.
"No thanks." She waved a dismissive hand at him, shaking her head. "I'm fine. Rin." She turned her attention to the child, beckoning her with a pat to her lap. "Come here, sweetheart."
Rin quietly complied, both smiling as she settled close, on her lap.
"Could I have a hug?" the wind user tipped her head to meet eyes with her at her level. The child was all too happy to oblige, both severely lacking in such human affection, the youkai lord feeling a knot in his stomach at such a sight, unable to help but watch, if only through a side-glance. It wasn't long before both their figures were jarred by Kagura's quaking, air drawn into her lungs with audible quickness. "You're such a sweet little girl," she choked.
"Lady Kagura?" Rin sat straight, Sesshoumaru unable to see her expression, her back to him. "Are you all right?"
She covered her reddened face, pushing Rin from her lap. "Excuse me." And through the trees she ran, to the glade beyond, the youkai lord's gaze following her until she slipped from sight. He turned his attention to the fire, picking up a stick to stoke the flames.
"Lord Sesshoumaru," he heard the child call, lifting his eyes to her. She looked so sincere, almost pleading, a little tug felt on his heart to see her big brown eyes beseech him in such a way. "Maybe you should follow her, make sure she's all right. I think she'd want that."
His eyes slowly drifted in the direction Kagura left, moving to Jaken, as if checking to make sure he wasn't going to make some snide, stupid crack, the stick still gripped tightly in his hand, just in case. But the imp wasn't paying attention, lost in his own little world of sulking and shame. He stood, dropping the stick to the ground, shifting his eyes between his two diminutive companions once more, and started toward the edge of camp. "Stay here," he told them. "Do not move from this place." He drifted through the trees, sniffing the air for Kagura's location, following her scent to a clearing not far from the place he stood earlier that day, sending a devastating blast at Naraku. There she stood, up a hill, cast in the full moon's unhindered light, his white kimono making her almost appear to shimmer. No wonder she found him almost godlike; if he were to encounter a creature that looked this way…
She turned, feeling his gaze, her eyes tracing his slender frame amongst the darkness. "Sesshoumaru," she said with a start. "How long have you been standing there?"
"Not long." He padded softly up the small incline and stood in front of her, that knot returning when he saw how her cheeks glistened, pale blue.
She let out a nervous giggle, turning way from him in order to wipe them. "Looking at me, you probably think all humans do is cry."
"In all fairness, mortals have a lifetime to deal with their human frailties. You have not."
"True," she laughed. Oh how good it felt to hear her do that. "Although, one would think, with the time that I've had, I might get a little used to it. But not all tears are the same." She lifted her face to the moon, soggy sleeves dropped to her sides. "Some are cried for sorrow, others for joy. I'm beginning to understand them a little better, as I'm bombarded with so many variations of the whole spectrum. At least, I hope, anyway."
Sesshoumaru supplied a nod unseen, taking a hesitant step forward. "Is it because of the child that you cry?"
Kagura sighed, thinking. "I dunno… I was just so overcome… with love, this feeling of contentment. I just… when I held Rin in my arms, I just couldn't contain myself. She probably doesn't understand, and, I should apologize."
"Not Rin. Our child."
She turned to him again, jaw slacked, eyes wide. "I- I don't know."
"It's just…" He lowered his eyes, absently staring at the bulge beneath his kimono, before lifting them again to hers. "You seem more easily overcome now that you carry this child. Are you unhappy?"
Her jaw unhinged again but no reply would come, eyes darting about as if some nearby piece of the scenery would aid in her answer.
"Kagura," he pressed, regretting doing so when he saw the tears in her eyes.
"I don't know," she repeated.
He felt his face stiffen. "I don't understand."
"Forgive me." She cupped a hand over her mouth a moment. "It's just… I have only been human a few cycles of the moon now, and now I'm to be a mother as well? It's a lot to swallow in such a short amount of time. And now I have these more intense reactions to contend with… can you not see that as the reason—those as many reasons—I'm so easily given to tears?"
He nodded slowly, allowing her to turn from him again, though some part of him begged to hold her, to draw her close and feel the life that they created press against him. She drew a deep breath and he could feel her close her eyes to the short chilly bursts bathing over them, only serving to intensify that urge, that tug on his heart yanking harder. "Still miss the wind."
"Mhm." She bobbed her head sharply. They stood there a long time before any more was said, that urge growing, Kagura trembling, buckling under the weight of her own tears, tears she refused to let go now, in his presence. "Naraku was right there and there was not a damn thing I could do about it. Nothing but maybe stare and hope he spared me—spared our child. That smug bastard, mocking my mortality like that—mocking us. He served his purpose, though. I was helpless and afraid. Had you not arrived when you did, I might not be walking and talking now."
He could no longer stand it. Sesshoumaru closed the space between them, draping his arm around her middle, palm resting on the swell of her stomach. "That will not happen again."
She turned within his hold, his hand settling at the small of her back, willowy arms surrounding him, a smile on her lips when her eyes met his. "I missed you." She pecked his lips, touching hers to them again and deepening the kiss. He allowed her to slide her tongue into his mouth, his hand drifting south down her back, a giggly breath passed from her mouth to his as he gripped the sweet contour of her rear.
"Do you want me?" Her face flushed with embarrassment. "Even now?" She let her head droop between them, looking down at how her stomach pressed against him.
He lifted her face to his, fingers tucked beneath her chin. "Why not?"
"I'll take that as a yes," she smiled, tasting the heat of his kiss. They settled on the grass, Sesshoumaru assisting his expectant lady, her skin met with the same shimmer as before as he eased her back and opened her borrowed robes, the lunar glow soon to melt their shadows into one murky shape; a god and his goddess.
