Disclaimer: I, in no way shape or form, own anything associated with the Inuyasha franchise. I make no money from this story; it is merely a work of fiction I have written to entertain myself and other fans of this amazing series. |
Since I’d neglected to give my readers anything to read all month, I figured I’d make up for it by giving you two new chapters instead of just one. Hope you enjoy it.
With You: Chapter Six
The Awakening, Part Three
“Look, why don’t we leave the distant past where it belongs and focus on something else?”
Jaken looked at Inuyasha. “Like what?”
Inuyasha’s look was grim as he pointed to Jaken’s wounds. “Like who or what in the hell did that to you and Sesshomaru?”
Jaken flinched. “Very well. If you want to know, I will tell you.”
** ** ** ** **
After dismissing Gin and making some tea, the group all sat around the fire pit, fixated on the small green demon who was sitting with his head hung, cradling a cup of tea in his free hand. Jaken sat quietly for a moment, then let out a long sigh as he began his story.
“Lord Sesshomaru and I were traveling through the countryside as usual. We were minding our own, like always. Just like old times.”
“As we traveled, a rumor began to spread throughout the demon world and was eventually brought to Lord Sesshomaru’s attention. It seemed that there was an army of demons from the mainland that had crossed the sea, looking to conquer our country. And the rumor was that they had decided to start by claiming the West as their first victim.”
“But what does any of this have to do with why you and Lord Sesshomaru were injured?” Rin asked.
“It has everything to do with why they were injured,” said Inuyasha. “Before he died, my old man unified the lands of the West and named himself their lord. Naturally, when he died, that title was passed down to his oldest son, Sesshomaru. Anyone who has claimed someplace as their territory will do anything to defend that claim. Sesshomaru is no different.
“So when Sesshomaru heard about this army, he went looking for it instead of waiting for it to come to him. Right?”
Jaken nodded. “Correct. Lord Sesshomaru did not care what happened to the other lands or the people who lived there, but he was greatly offended at how the mainlanders had underestimated the strength of the West. He decided to challenge them all on his own.”
“We searched for many days, and finally we reached the clearing where the army was supposed to have been camped. But when we got there, we discovered something that angered Lord Sesshomaru even more.”
“We saw that there was a lone ogre in the field. No army, no banners, just this one ogre. Whoever had spread the rumor had been greatly mistaken. Lord Sesshomaru became angry, believing that this was nothing but a great waste of his time.”
“We turned around and got ready to leave when the ogre called out his name.”
Inuyasha leaned forward. “The ogre called out Sesshomaru’s name?”
“Yes.” Jaken paused for a minute while he drank his tea. He stared into the cup, looking at his reflection. “The ogre said that he was the one who started the rumor. He said that what he wanted was an audience with Lord Sesshomaru, but he didn’t know how to find him.”
Inuyasha frowned. “That doesn’t make any sense. You know that he’s the Lord of the West, but you don’t know where to look for him?”
“Lord Sesshomaru thought so too. I could tell by his demeanor that he didn’t trust this ogre, but he chose to approach him anyway. The demon didn’t give us his name, but he did tell us that he was of dragon descent, and had been on the mainland all his life.”
“Hmmm. Like Sesshomaru really cared.”
“Right. Lord Sesshomaru stopped him before he could go on and told him that he didn’t come to hear his life story. So then he decided to tell us why he had crossed the sea.”
“He said that the legend of Lord Sesshomaru and your father had spread all the way to the mainland. Everywhere, there were stories being told of how great and powerful the Inu No Taisho’s son had become. He also mentioned that there were rumors about you as well, Inuyasha; stories of a half-demon who traveled the countryside with a band of humans, slaying demons with a great sword that had once been wielded by the Great Dog Demon himself.”
Kaede looked at her father. “Is that true, Papa?”
Inuyasha nodded. “That was back when I first met your mother, when we were searching for the shards of the Shikon Jewel.”
“When Lord Sesshomaru heard of the rumors mentioning you, he began to get angrier. He told the demon to state his purpose or he was going to leave. But the ogre continued to talk about the stories. The countless stories of how the Dog Demons had conquered the West and were protecting their claim with an iron fist, and then he said that with every story he heard, it made him sick to his stomach. Sick to think that a pair of dogs had become so famous, even in the continent. So he decided to prove just how weak they were. He decided that he was going to cross the ocean and slay the dogs, and take their claim for himself. He then went on to say that Lord Sesshomaru had no idea who he was dealing with, and that if he had any sense, he would forfeit his territory and his title to him.”
Inuyasha snorted. “If I know Sesshomaru, he didn’t take that lying down.” Rin and Kagome nodded in agreement.
“His words insulted Lord Sesshomaru, who immediately drew Bakusaiga from his waist.”
“Wait a minute. What’s Bakusaiga?” Kaede asked.
“Bakusaiga is the great sword that was bequeathed to Sesshomaru when he finally overcame his obsession with the Tessaiga. Like your father said, it’s a manifestation of Sesshomaru’s true power, and is much stronger than your father’s Tessaiga,” said her mother.
“But what makes it so special?”
“What makes Bakusaiga so special is its ability to do continuous damage to an opponent once they’ve been cut by its blade. If they are so much as nicked by it, it will continuously hack away until the opponent is no more.” Inuyasha placed his hand under his chin, deep in thought. “But it doesn’t make any sense. Why Sesshomaru was injured so badly? With a sword like Bakusaiga, all he would’ve needed was one Wind Scar and the fight would’ve been over.”
Jaken nodded. “When I think back on it, I think he knew about Lord Sesshomaru’s Bakusaiga. Because the minute it was drawn, the ogre began to taunt Lord Sesshomaru. He said that the stories said that Lord Sesshomaru had become more powerful than his father, but that he could see it was only because he fought like a human and hid behind a sword, while his father was a true demon who faced danger in his true form.”
“That was obviously a ploy to force Lord Sesshomaru to fight without his sword. There’s no way Lord Sesshomaru would fall for that,” said Rin.
Jaken shook his head. “But Lord Sesshomaru did put his sword away.”
Rin gasped. “He knew that the demon was goading him into fighting him unarmed and he still sheathed his sword?”
“Heh. That shows you right there that he’s not your run-of-the-mill ogre. He knew exactly what to say to make Sesshomaru put his sword down,” said Inuyasha.
“But why? If he knew that it was a trap, why would Uncle Sesshomaru put his sword away?” asked Kaede.
“A matter of pride,” said Kagome. “Your grandfather fought many demons, and all of the stories about his greatest battles talk about how majestic he looked in his true demon form. The ogre obviously knew that Sesshomaru’s pride wouldn’t let him pass up the chance to prove that he could fight in his true form just as well as his father.”
“But even so, I’ve seen Sesshomaru in his true form, and it’s nothing to laugh at. To be honest, I’m still amazed that Inuyasha was able to defeat him.”
Inuyasha looked at her. “I mean, considering that you had just learned how to make the Tessaiga transform.”
Jaken took another sip of his tea. “In any case, pride or not, Lord Sesshomaru sheathed his sword and quickly transformed into his true self.” Jaken raised his head, a smile on his face as he remembered his master confronting his newfound enemy in his true form. “I never had the honor of meeting the Great Dog General, but I’m sure that Lord Sesshomaru’s true form was every bit as majestic as his.”
“So Sesshomaru transformed and then what?”
“Well, naturally, the battle got underway. But right away, I began to notice something strange about this ogre. No matter what Lord Sesshomaru tried, he just couldn’t seem to penetrate the demon’s skin. No matter what he tried, his teeth, his claws, the demon always brushed Lord Sesshomaru aside and never had a scratch on him.”
Jaken sighed. “I foolishly threw myself into the battle, thinking that Lord Sesshomaru would look upon me favorably if I tried to help, but it was no use. The ogre brushed me aside as easily as swatting a fly.”
“That would explain your wounds. He must’ve thrown you against a wall,” Kagome remarked.
Jaken nodded in agreement. “Ah-Un tried to help as well, but for all his trying, he got the same as I did. I couldn’t believe that there was a demon this strong, much less an ogre. I couldn’t figure out why his skin was so strong. My first thought was, “It’s almost like his skin is made of iron.” And then it came to me. There was only one demon in the world strong enough to challenge a daiyoukai as powerful as Lord Sesshomaru and his father.”
Inuyasha growled. “Ryukoutsei.”
Jaken nodded.
Kaede and Rin looked confused. “Who’s Ryukoutsei?” they both asked.
Kagome’s face donned a worried look. “Ryukoutsei was a dragon with a hide as strong as steel. The Inu No Taisho battled him when he tried to take over his territory, but he proved to be almost too much for even him to handle. It was all he could do to plunge one of his fangs into Ryukoutsei’s neck and seal him to the side of a cliff. However, he had been greatly wounded, and not too long after that battle, he passed away due to his injuries.”
“I was forced to fight him when my Tessaiga was broken and I couldn’t wield it properly after it was fixed. I tried to slay him while he was still sealed, but my enemy at the time broke the seal and awakened him. I was able to slay him by mastering the power of the Backlash Wave, but if I hadn’t mastered that technique when I did, I wouldn’t be sitting here right now.” Inuyasha’s face was grim as he recounted his battle with the demon. “He was without a doubt, one of the strongest opponents I’ve ever faced.”
“But if he’s dead, then how-“
“The ogre we were fighting took great delight in telling us that by eating Ryukoutsei’s flesh, he had somehow been able to acquire Ryukoutstei’s iron hide. That was the reason he’d waited to challenge Lord Sesshomaru as long as he did. He had heard the story of the battle between Ryukoutsei and your father, and he spent a great deal of time looking for the dragon’s flesh, hoping that it would give him some sort of edge in his battle against Lord Sesshomaru.”
“When Lord Sesshomaru heard this, he was shocked. He was fighting a demon that was just as powerful as the very same demon that caused his father’s death. But he didn’t let that stop him. He became even more determined to stop that demon right then and there; if he defeated him, it would be like he had surpassed his father.”
Inuyasha frowned. “But Sesshomaru’s already way stronger than the old man was. Totosai told me so.”
Jaken nodded his head. “True, but Lord Sesshomaru never got the chance to prove that he could defeat your father in battle. That’s why he hates you so much.”
Inuyasha frowned. “What do you mean?”
“Your father may have died because of the wounds he received in battle against Ryukoutsei, but the only reason he challenged him in the first place was because Ryukoutsei was threatening the area of his territory where your mother lived. At the time, your mother was pregnant with you. The way Lord Sesshomaru sees it, if his father had never challenged Ryukoutsei to protect your human mother, he would’ve lived. Then Lord Sesshomaru would’ve been able to challenge and defeat him someday, and truly take over as the Lord of the Western Lands.”
“I see. In order to be the man, you first have to beat the man,” said Kagome.
They all looked at her with confused expressions on their faces. “Huh?”
“It’s an old saying from my old era. If you want be the man on top, you first have to beat the man who’s already sitting there. Basically, Inuyasha, Sesshomaru blames you and your mother because he was never able to challenge your father in battle and prove to everyone and to himself that he was truly stronger than your father.”
Once again, Inuyasha lowered his head in thought. “I see.” He turned back to Jaken. “So what ever happened to that ogre?”
The imp’s face fell. “After he beat Lord Sesshomaru some more, he said that he was disappointed. He said that he’d expected much more of a fight from the son of one of the greatest demons in legend, but that he could see that the stories were greatly exaggerated.” Jaken’s hand clutched his teacup in anger. “He said that he could see that Lord Sesshomaru was powerful, but not powerful enough to defeat him. He released my Lord’s neck, then turned and walked away, saying that he would return to the mainland for now, but someday, he would return, and when he did, Lord Sesshomaru had better be stronger or he wouldn’t be as merciful next time.”
Jaken’s face looked forlorn. “It took all of Lord Sesshomaru’s strength to try and move and he managed to cover some ground, but eventually, he collapsed. Ah-Un stopped and lay down next to him, but I could smell that there were humans nearby. I felt that it was my duty to try and chase them away, so that my Lord could recuperate. However, all I remember after that was finding them and then passing out. When I came to, I was here.”
Jaken sat his cup down. “I know that Lord Sesshomaru has wronged you in the past, but he’ll suffer the same fate as his father if he doesn’t receive medical attention. You did it for me, will you please do it for him?”
Inuyasha voice was stern. “No.”
Rin’s head snapped toward him. “Why not?!” she shrieked.
“That demon knows about me. He had to have heard the story of how I slayed Ryukoutsei. That’s why he went looking for Ryukoutsei’s flesh. However, my activity has died down since Naraku’s defeat. I haven’t been in any major battles since then, so the stories have stopped. For all this demon knows, I’m dead and lying in my grave, and I want to keep it that way. I have a family, and they come first. This ogre isn’t looking to challenge me, just Sesshomaru. If he comes near this village, then I won’t have a choice, but until that day comes, my place is here with my wife and children.”
“But he’s your brother!” Rin cried.
“He’s never acted like it. He has never once treated me like I was his brother, so why should I help him?”
“But, Papa…”
Inuyasha’s head shook fiercely. “No buts, Kaede. That’s my order and it’s final.”
“Fine,” said Rin. “I’ll nurse him back to health myself.”
“Didn’t you just hear what I said? No member of this village is going to be involved.”
Rin stood. “I owe Lord Sesshomaru my life. I would never forgive myself if I just let him die after all he’s done to help me.”
Inuyasha pulled himself to his feet and stood in front of her. “You are a member of this village, Rin, and I will not let you endanger the lives of everyone who lives here.”
Rin stared Inuyasha in his eyes. Her look was unwavering as she said, “I am a servant of Lord Sesshomaru first and a member of this village second. I will therefore let that decide what takes precedence in my mind.”
Inuyasha stared at her. He was ready to knock her out again when Kagome’s voice resonated throughout the room. “That’s enough, Inuyasha. Let her do it.”
Inuyasha’s head whirled around to face her. “What? But Kagome, you heard what he said. That demon is going to come back, and when he does, he’s going to be looking for Sesshomaru. Now once he finds him, it doesn’t matter where, that place is going to become a battlefield. Are you sure that’s what you want?”
“Think about it, Inuyasha. After years of traveling around disguised as a human, don’t you think that Sesshomaru would’ve been rusty fighting in his true form?”
Inuyasha stopped. “You have a point.”
“Sesshomaru’s become so used to fighting with his sword that he doesn’t even try to fight in his true form anymore. That ogre could probably sense this and decided to come back when Sesshomaru was truly able to fight in his demonic form. This ogre may be sneaky, but he’s just like Sesshomaru, he’s prideful. He wants to defeat Sesshomaru at his best so that there are no doubts. So he’s probably going to give us a good length of time. You said it yourself, if you hadn’t been able to defeat Ryukoutsei, you’d be dead. And remember, when you defeated him, you surpassed your father’s legacy. Don’t you think Sesshomaru deserves the same chance?”
“But, still…the villagers…”
“Sesshomaru’s not going to stay. Once he’s fully healed, he’s going to leave the village most likely. But Rin is right. She owes him her life, and we would be just as wrong as she would if we didn’t let her try and repay him for all that he’s done for her.”
Inuyasha sighed. “Alright, you win. But where is she going to nurse him, exactly?”
“There’s an empty hut on the outskirts of the village. She can watch over him there.”
“Okay.” Inuyasha turned to face Rin. “You hear that?”
Rin’s eyes welled up with tears as she nodded her head. “Thank you so much.”
Inuyasha turned away and began scratching at his head. “Don’t thank me. Thank Kagome.”
Rin turned to Kagome and bowed deeply. “Thank you so much, Kagome.”
“No problem, Rin. You just make sure Sesshomaru gets back to his normal self.”
“I will!” She immediately ran out of the hut, ready to start on her new task.
Jaken watched as the girl ran out of the hut. Turning to Kagome, he said, “And as for me?”
“You can stay in the hut with Sesshomaru.” Kagome shifted on the floor. “I ask that you try and stay in the hut as much as possible, so as not to alarm the villagers.”
“Understood. Thank you.” Jaken bowed as much as his bandages would allow, then followed Rin out of the door.
“Mama?” Kaede walked to where her mother was sitting and sat next to her. “Is that true? Is that demon really going to come here looking for uncle Sesshomaru?”
Kagome pulled her daughter close. “Don’t you worry about that. If he does, your daddy’s going to slay him, must like he did Ryukoutsei all those years ago.” She looked at Inuyasha. “Right?”
“Damn straight.” Kagome frowned at him. “Oh! I mean, yeah, that demon’s dead if he comes around here.”
Kaede smiled. “Okay!”
“It’s time for bed now, honey. Come on.” Kagome began to crawl to the futon. Kaede followed.
Inuyasha stood. “It’s pretty obvious that Rin’s not going to let me sleep if I don’t help her right this minute, So I’m going to help get Sesshomaru to this hut. I’ll be back later. Okay?”
Kagome nodded. “Just be careful, okay?”
“I will.” With that, it was Inuyasha’s turn to disappear into the darkness outside of the doorway.
** ** ** ** **
And that was how Inuyasha wound up dragging Sesshomaru’s broken body to his dragon, while his two most faithful servants looked on. He knew that Sesshomaru wasn’t going to be happy, but at that moment, he didn’t care.
“Be careful with him, Inuyasha.”
“Yeah, yeah.” Damn girl cares about him more than she does about a human.
The moon shone bright as Inuyasha laid Sesshomaru’s body across the dragon’s back. “There. Now, on to the hut.”
Rin looked at the two heads. “Are you ok, Ah-Un? Can you handle it?”
The dragon’s heads both nodded in succession.
Grabbing the reigns, Rin looked at Inuyasha. “Lead the way.”
And with that, the group headed to the hut.
