6 - Least Complicated
-----
Rin rolled the pole of the glaive between her hands as she stood in the field, looking up at the pointed tip of it several feet over her head. "So, you really think this is going to work?"
Shippou cocked his head at her. "You think it won't?" he challenged. Inuyasha chuckled.
She scowled at the pair of them. "It's stupid. Idachi has been so careful. Why would he risk being lured out now, when he has already lost his companions to us?"
It was Taian who answered. "Because he doesn't care about them." All eyes turned to her and she stared at the grassy soil, a slight blush coloring her cheeks. "Thinking that Slager lied to him, hid from him an artifact of power, is not a far stretch in his mind." She glanced up and let her eyes roam her companions. "It is a farther stretch to assume he cared for his lackeys." Her eyes settled finally on Rin and a smile pulled at her mouth. "You were the one who told me your Lord Sesshomaru was different. Why do you now not see that it is so, that other demons are not like him?"
Rin glared at her, but continued rolling the polearm between her hands thoughtfully. "You are right about that," she said finally, and sighed. She transferred her glare to Shippou. "Still, telling Idachi you have this thing that Slager hid from him will not be enough."
Shippou returned her glare in full. "Oh?"
"You cannot simply leave it lying around, or he will know it isn't truly the precious thing you want him to believe it is. And if any of you are there, he will not show himself but send another." Her hands wrapped firmly around the pole, fingers rubbing over the designs cut into the wood. "I will steal it from you, and then he will come for me."
Shippou's jaw dropped open, though Inuyasha wondered if it was to deny her plan or in awe that he had not proposed it first. He wondered what Sesshomaru would say about Rin offering herself as bait... but it wasn't that dangerous, and she was certainly capable of making her own decisions. "Okay."
"You can't – "
Inuyasha waved aside Shippou's protest. "It may be your plan, but that's not your call."
Shippou scowled and stalked away. Rin looked after him; Inuyasha came and took the glaive from her. "Go after him," he urged her, and she nodded.
Taian watched them go, arms folded. "Isn't he a bit young for her?"
Inuyasha grinned at her sidelong. "You're being a bit obvious there Taian. He's older than the both of you put together; demons age differently. Shouldn't you know that?"
She shrugged uncomfortably, and Inuyasha let his grin fade into a genuine smile. "They grew up together, haven't seen each other in awhile, and I think they left it in a bad place before. They should patch that up before we go further."
Taian turned away. "Do you really think this will work?"
He laughed and shrugged. "I think Rin's suggestion will definitely help. And it's not like we can't get Eikoseisui's attention in a different way; it'd just be nice to do it while getting rid of another annoyance. Besides, you're going to be right with her, looking after her. If it goes wrong, I'll blame it all on you."
Taian snorted. "My thanks for that." The look she shot him was not amused and Inuyasha laughed again.
-----
Inuyasha was sitting high in a tree across the field watching Rin and Taian practice wielding the glaive when Shippou gave him the signal that their quarry was snared.
He passed the signal on, and moved down to a new position until he could see Idachi where the demon was following Shippou, who was playing the part of informer. Idachi was indeed the smaller demon who'd run away the day Sesshomaru had killed Slager; he was watching Rin and Taian as they lingered temptingly close to the thick trees. Rin was flailing around with the glaive like she's never held a weapon before and Inuyasha smirked.
Shippou was whispering to Idachi. The other demon raised a hand to strike him, but Shippou ducked out of the way of the blow, looking affronted. Inuyasha slipped up behind them, unnoticed with Idachi's attention fixed so heavily on his goal so close. "If you have lied to me," the demon was threatening Shippou, "it will not be well for you."
Inuyasha caught the demon by the shoulder and wrapped the clawed fingers of his other hand around Idachi's throat, pulling the demon around to face him. "Hello," he said companionably, the greeting accompanied by a excessive show of teeth.
Idachi's slippery reputation wasn't unfounded. Inuyasha thought he had a good grip on the demon, but Idachi weaseled out of his grasp. Inuyasha snarled and snatched for the demon again, catching only cloth. Idachi, blood dripping from the scratches at his throat, slipped away with a snarl of his own. Lured by the temptation of the supposed prize, Idachi made his way toward where Rin waited.
She met him with the point of the glaive raised. Idachi slipped past the weapon, grasping at the hilt. Rin fought him for it, pulling back sharply so that Idachi almost lost his grip. Taian leapt onto the demon's back, wakizashi at the ready. She slid the short sword into his flesh, but Idachi ducked to the side and threw the slayer off of him. She rolled easily and came back up to quickly close the distance between her and her quarry.
It happened so quickly neither she nor Inuyasha could get any closer. Idachi grabbed for Rin again, and the glaive. He misjudged the distance and Rin ducked under his outstretched hand. The glaive came up sure in her grasp as she aimed it at her foe.
Idachi's eyes bulged as he looked down at Rin over the length of wood that had suddenly jutted out from the lower part of his chest. She smiled grimly and her hands gripped the polearm more firmly as she jerked it toward him, ensuring that it had pierced his flesh.
Inuyasha blinked, and grinned. He came up behind them, circling around and resting a hand on Rin's shoulder; he could feel her trembling underneath the fire rat fur. "Well struck, Rin."
She nodded. Almost convulsively, she dropped the glaive and stepped away from Idachi's body. Inuyasha put his arm around her shoulders. She didn't look at him or respond, but he felt her stop trembling. Taian quickly ensured the demon was dead, and then came around to stand on Rin's other side. Shippou watched his old friend with worried eyes.
"Well, it appears I shall have to find new assistants. Ones that can be taken out by whelps and humans were obviously not worth my time."
Inuyasha felt a shiver in his blood when he heard the voice behind him. Slowly, he turned to face the demon who had appeared. "Eikoseisui, I presume."
Eikoseisui was tall, as Shippou had said, and lordly, if by that Shippou meant an asshole. Beyond that, Inuyasha couldn't see any resemblance to Sesshomaru. Eikoseisui was dark of hair and eye, and his expression was flat and empty like weathered stone. He strode forward boldly, moving like someone who expected the world to recognize his brilliance without being given a reason to. He ignored Inuyasha and reached for Rin.
Shippou reached out, grabbing Rin and Taian, and all three of them disappeared. Eikoseisui halted, confused for a moment.
Inuyasha laughed. He couldn't help it. "That'll show you to underestimate whelps," he taunted because he knew Shippou was dying to say it but didn't want to give away his position. Fortunately, he expected Eikoseisui's retaliation. Inuyasha leapt back, easily avoiding Eikoseisui's swing, grinning cockily as he did so.
He wasn't prepared for Eikoseisui to continue to come after him, and his dodge of the demon's second blow was far less cocky. He caught the demon's wrist as it came down at him, Eikoseisui leaning in close and leering at him. "You think you can challenge me."
Inuyasha grinned. "I think I can do more than that." With his grip on the demon's wrist he used Eikoseisui's resistance to throw the demon over his shoulder.
Eikoseisui snarled, whirling back with claws crooked. Inuyasha leapt over the arm, and they traded a few more blows. "Where is your master, halfbreed? Why had he not come out to protect your from me?"
Inuyasha narrowed his eyes, his grin never fading but losing its humor. "If you're talking about Sesshomaru, he's got better things to do than watch me beat your punk ass."
Eikoseisui smiled as if he's won something and Inuyasha paused a moment. Of course, Eikoseisui was trying to play the game, and Inuyasha almost growled in frustration. He would far rather just beat the guy into a bloody mess. His hand touched lightly against Tetsusaiga's hilt and he felt the power that thrummed up through him. He could do it. This was not part of the plan, but Sesshomaru hadn't appeared and Inuyasha knew he could do this.
"On the contrary." Sesshomaru's soft voice echoed over the clearing and he was suddenly there, behind Inuyasha but still well within his eyeline. Inuyasha saw Shippou, with Rin and Taian, behind his mate. "I would enjoy nothing more than to watch you 'beat his punk ass,' Inuyasha."
Inuyasha took his eyes from his opponent for a brief moment, meeting his brother's gaze in surprise. Was his brother trying to play the game for him? The power that thrummed through him was tinged with concern and love and pride and he returned it with confidence and satisfaction.
"Ah, Sesshomaru." Eikoseisui's voice was heavy with his own satisfaction. "Now that you have deigned to grace us with your presence there is no need to waste any more time." He moved to step past Inuyasha as if the half demon wasn't there.
Inuyasha sank bloody claws into the demon's back as he passed. "Leaving so soon?" he growled. "I was just getting warmed up."
Eikoseisui turned back to him with a red glare in his eye. The demon's long fingers closed around Inuyasha's jaw as he lifted the half demon and flung him across the clearing to land at Sesshomaru's feet. Inuyasha pushed himself to his feet with a snarl.
"Or should I waste some more time," Eikoseisui taunted, "rearranging the ground with your catamite's face?" He shrugged as if it wasn't important. "I'd rather get down to the business of you giving me your lands."
Inuyasha felt Sesshomaru's hand on his shoulder though it was hard to concentrate through the anger that filled him. How dare this interloper so disrespect Sesshomaru? He would show him... And through the red haze, Inuyasha heard his brother's voice.
"Inuyasha is my mate and chosen heir." The words were almost casually spoken, but Inuyasha felt them burning through him. "If you have some comment on how I distribute my lands, you may take it up with him."
Eikoseisui stopped dead, expression clouded in confusion.
"Keeping the bloodline pure, are we Sesshomaru?" Nanshoku taunted, and Inuyasha became aware that he and Eikoseisui had gained an audience. The demons who had all been hovering in the area the past few days were suddenly back. "Oh, I forgot, it is already tainted by human-love. Is it that you prefer a peasant-raised bastard, or that none other would have you?"
Hotaru was standing apart from Nanshoku but he needled back at her, "The words of vultures who only come to pick at bones that others have killed are not worth hearing." Nanshoku hissed at him, hatred easily read on her face, but she was far more drawn by what was about to happen in the clearing to allow herself to be drawn into combat with Hotaru.
"He is of human blood," Eikoseisui was saying, still confused. "He cannot be your heir."
"Blood is of little consequence," a new voice said, and though the voice was unfamiliar Inuyasha easily recognized the man who stood by the treeline as Gaiko. His dark hair was bound back in a top knot and his golden kimono flowed around him. "Power is what will take and hold a demon's lands." Gaiko paused to lock eyes with the other demon and Eikoseisui glared at him distastefully. "As you should well know, Eikoseisui." The stag demon's eyes shifted to Inuyasha before moving past him. "We shall see what power lies in your blood."
Eikoseisui snarled, pulled from his calm, and Inuyasha turned to look at his mate. Sesshomaru was looking back at him, his eyes bright with the emotions Inuyasha could feel from him though his face was impassive. Inuyasha leaned into his brother, reaching up to touch his face. "I love you," he said. He didn't say the words often, and he saw the delight that passed over Sesshomaru's face.
Sesshomaru placed an arm around him, pulling him closer. "I am well informed of the fact," his mate purred. "Though the sound of those words from your lips brings me great pleasure."
Inuyasha felt something warm break loose inside of him and he buried his face in his mate's shoulder. "It's your words that–" he started, but broke off, huffing a deep breath before trying again. "Thanks. For knowing I can do this."
The smile that spread over his mate's face was both loving and predatory, and the demon leaned down to kiss him soundly. He pulled Tenseiga from where it rested and passed it to Inuyasha, slipping the blade in so that it hung at his side beside Tetsusaiga. Sesshomaru's fingers traced over the golden and silver thread at Inuyasha's shoulder for a moment, and Inuyasha felt warmth rise up through him. "Go," Sesshomaru released him. "And show him his mistakes."
Inuyasha nodded. He turned away from his brother and stepped toward his opponent.
Eikoseisui was still eyeing him with disbelief. "Fine," the demon said finally. "If I must remove this annoyance first, then so be it." He reached into the sky and, with a crack of thunder, pulled forth a pair of broadswords. He hefted the weapons in his hands with an air that said he did not expect the task before him to take long at all.
Inuyasha drew his own swords from his side. He felt an urge to respond to his opponent's verbal jab, but at the same time he was filled with such power that it seemed beneath his attention. He wondered if the watch spell was feeding him Sesshomaru's demonic energy – he certainly felt more powerful, more focused, than he was used to feeling. His grip on Tetsusaiga was firm, but the thought of losing hold of it did not edge his consciousness with the worry of madness. He raised his swords to meet his opponent's blow, and the thought came to him that it wasn't Sesshomaru's energy that was being fed to him, simply the warmth of his mate's regard.
Eikoseisui's swords came down upon his crossed guard with a unearthly screech that echoed through the silence, sparks of fire scattering through the air around the combatants. The sheer power of the blow sent Inuyasha staggering back and he could feel the swords of his father still singing from the impact. Eikoseisui really packed a punch; Inuyasha tried to recall the last time he'd fought an opponent who so thoroughly outclassed him physically. There was something of Sesshomaru in his lean power, much of Chernobog in his contempt, and more than a little of Naraku in his reckless disregard for life. But, Inuyasha realized as he dodged aside from a second blow, there was nothing else to Eikoseisui. Chernobog had had magic, Naraku a fiendish inability to die, and Sesshomaru – always, his brother's shrewd mind drove his attacks. Eikoseisui had none of this. His strikes were easy to predict and Inuyasha felt... disappointed. Idachi had been the smart one, and he'd been easily lured in by greed. Eikoseisui was driven by arrogance, bloodlust, and little else.
But that didn't mean this was going to be easy. Inuyasha dodged another blow, drawing his opponent out.
Eikoseisui sneered. "If I'd known I was doing a solo demonstration I would have gone slower so to show off my forms." He pulled back both swords, then began moving forward in a slow, spinning step. "I thought I had an opponent, but where is his attack?"
Inuyasha barely heard the demon's words. He mirrored the position of the swords with his own, Tetsusaiga high and just over his head, Tenseiga low and level with his chest. While Tenseiga would not deliver a cutting blow to an opponent, it presented both a physical and mystical shield, while also balancing Inuyasha's attacks with his opponents. It occurred to him, as he let Eikoseisui's next blow land, spinning the demon's swords away with a deflection, that Sesshomaru would have known the other demon's fighting style and had given him Tenseiga for that purpose. He'd seen nothing in his brother's gift except a blessing, but it made sense; Sesshomaru played the game like a master even when Inuyasha wasn't paying attention.
He was so focused on his opponent's blows that when Eikoseisui hissed in annoyance it took a moment for the reason to break through Inuyasha's concentration. He observed Tetsusaiga's bloodied edge and the matching red line that was quickly spreading along the demon's shoulder and allowed a smirk to break through the calm that had fallen over him. Inuyasha felt his audience grow even more silent, with the breathless anticipation of predators scenting blood.
As if to make up for their silence, the wind roared. Inuyasha could smell rain and the displaced scent of springtime and coiled power; the smell always made him think of Kagome's world now, where they had learned how to harness lightning in their devices and bring it to heel when they called.
The build of the wind made Eikoseisui pause and turn to the forest. A regal woman stepped out of the trees. "He is coming," she said evenly. Sesshomaru snarled softly.
Inuyasha wasn't sure who she was or what she was talking about, but the voice in the back of his mind whispered, Raidennotaisho, and Eikoseisui turned back to their battle with renewed energy.
His attack came fast and furious. Inuyasha tried to catch the weight of the demon's blows on his swords, but it was getting harder to turn aside or shield himself from the sheer ferocity of the demon's power. He inhaled in a sudden gasp of pain as one of Eikoseisui's swords slipped in under his guard and cut into his side, parting cloth and sinking into flesh. The demon grinned darkly, their faces pressed close, and twisted the blade deeper.
Inuyasha grit his teeth and head butted the demon. His opponent thrown off by the move, Inuyasha used Eikoseisui's surprise to flip the demon over his shoulder again. As Eikoseisui scrambled to bring his weapons around, Inuyasha twisted around himself and buried Tetsusaiga in the demon's back.
Eikoseisui roared with anger and pain as he twisted away. Grasping one of his swords, he flung it powerfully at the half demon. Inuyasha held Tenseiga before him, one hand on the hilt and the other behind the blade as he took a deep breath and prayed this would work. Eikoseisui's sword struck Tenseiga with a ringing clang and fell at Inuyasha's feet.
Inuyasha took a deep breath. Reaching down, he wrapped his hand around the hilt of Eikoseisui's sword. The weapon crackled with energy, and he could feel the power of it waiting to be released, as likely to burn him as it was to strike an opponent.
Eikoseisui tried to get up, Tetsusaiga still piercing his back. Inuyasha approached the demon again, Eikoseisui's sword burning his hand with the energy held within it. Eikoseisui's dark eyes were wide with pain and disbelief, and Inuyasha placed the demon's own weapon against his throat. Without a word, he thrust the sword up, under the demon's chin, and grinned with satisfaction as it sank up into his brain. Eikoseisui's grip went lax and his other sword tumbled to the ground. Calmly, Inuyasha lifted the second blade and used it to behead the demon.
He stood still for a moment, the rain starting to fall on him. The cool touch of it seemed to waken screaming pain all through his body, and he placed a hand against his side. It came away dark with blood and he swayed as he looked at it. The adrenaline of battle left him quickly.
Sesshomaru was beside him suddenly, and Inuyasha reached up both his hands to touch his mate's face, pulling the demon's lips to his in a kiss that was hungry and primal. Sesshomaru's eyes were dancing as the demon pulled away, and he said something. His lips were moving, but Inuyasha was too distracted with watching the way the blood from his hand ran down his mate's face. Thunder cracked and Inuyasha felt the pulse of energy as his attention was drawn to a newcomer to the party.
The female demon Inuyasha didn't recognize stood with her head bowed, facing toward the newcomer. He was tall and dark, a cloak of dragon's hide over his shoulders and the smell of lightning crackling all around him.
Inuyasha snarled. Sesshomaru placed a hand on his arm and stepped between his mate and the newcomer.
"You dare," the newcomer hissed. "You dare to touch my son?" Lightning gathered around his closed fist. "I will teach you why that is unwise."
