The festival carried on like normal even with the absence of their Alpha. It didn’t take long for the word to go around about the injured human girl that Kouga had claimed as his mate. Ayame was not handling it well. Twice Saburo had to stop her from attacking someone who just asked a simple question about the priestess, twice she had fought him tooth and nail when he tried to subdue her, and twice was one time too many. She didn’t stop there. She was constantly sniffing around the common den, waiting for an opportunity to sneak past the guards. She never approached it, but Saburo was well aware of her presence and he was prepared in case she decided to disobey his direct order.
Kouga never left Kagome’s side. She hadn’t regained consciousness and it had become a common sight for him to walk in on Kouga curled up next to her nuzzling and licking her neck or face. Kouga didn’t say much outside of asking for a report and the occasional thank you’s. Saburo had a few of the trustworthy females run errands for Kouga, bringing him food, which he never ate, fresh herbs, clean bandages, which he went through like no tomorrow, and fresh pelts and rags for his pallet since Kagome wasn’t able to move to relieve herself. Kouga would clean her up and replace the furs without hesitation. He had to force feed broth down her throat to keep her from starving. He changed her bandages everyday just like he was told and from what Saburo could see of her, which was only her face, shoulders, and arms, her minor cuts had closed nicely and most of her bruises had almost disappeared. He was proud of his friend and worried about him at the same time, but all he could do was hold the pack together and handle any problems that came up to give Kouga the time he needed. Saburo had commissioned a small group to gather the additional supplies that Kagome and Kouga would need during the hastily approaching winter. He had personally stacked the supplies inside and outside Kouga’s den, stacks of furs, dried meats and vegetables, and stacks upon stacks of fire wood. He knew that Kagome’s frail human body couldn’t tolerate the cold temperature like they could and the last thing the little onna needed was to get sick. After about the second week of Kouga refusing to eat, Saburo had a confrontation with him. He had argued his point, but finally gave in and choked down half a boar that Saburo had killed for him. He needed the blood and nutrients to stay strong for Kagome and Saburo laid heavy emphasis on this fact. It had been two months since he had first found, what he considered, his little sister tied to that tree and most of her wounds were completely healed, but she still hadn’t woken up. It had taken a toll on his friend and Kouga was beside himself with grief. Saburo spent most nights sitting with them and would listen to Kouga reminisce about the woman he loved. She was a fiery little onna and he would chuckle at some of the stories he told about her antics. Saburo felt like he knew her completely even though they had never spoken. He knew why his friend loved her. She had a pure heart and was so selfless that it was sinful, but she was head strong and determined. She would do anything to protect the ones she loved. That was a rare quality and he was grateful that Kouga had found someone like that. If anyone deserved it, he did. He did have to admit that she was a beauty that would rival the Gods themselves. He had never seen a human or demoness that could hold a candle to his little sister. He couldn’t help but think that if they indeed did mate, he hoped the pups would take after her in that department. He mentioned this once and got a sad laugh and an obscene hand gesture from his friend. Three weeks later the first snow fell on the eastern den. It was heavy and the winds blew the downy snow in all directions. It was going to be a bad one this year. They all could sense it. The wolves all huddled in their respective dens. Not many ventured to the common area, but there were some who were still set in their daily routine. Saburo made his patrols even though he doubted anything would be stupid enough to be out in this kind of weather. He was out on patrol when it finally happened. Kouga was curled up next to his woman, stroking her hair like he did every day. She had healed nicely and with the help of his saliva, she would have very few scars. The only thing that bothered him was the fact that she wouldn’t wake up. He didn’t mind taking care of her, it was the least he could do for his transgressions, but he was at a loss as to how to help her. Her heart was strong and her breath was soft and even. She had lost weight because she was unable to eat properly and it made her seem even frailer than she was before, like if he touched her too hard she would crumble under his hands. She looked as if she were sleeping, with her silken midnight tresses fanned around her head. She was his angel, his sleeping beauty and he knew she would come back to him. He just didn’t know when. Kouga heard footsteps and the rustle of the flap to his den. He was too immersed in his affections for his little mate to realize who was there. “Your mate?!” A seething female voice growled lowly. Kouga looked up to see a very pissed off Ayame. “What are you doing here, Ayame? You need to leave.” Kouga commanded, stopping his petting and licking her face once before he stood to face the wolf female. Her eyes flashed dangerously at the sight of him licking Kagome and his senses screamed danger. “How dare you! How dare you bring that filthy bitch to our dens, Kouga! I am your true mate, not that pathetic human girl!” Ayame ragged with clenched fists. “I will not tell you again. We are not mates. Kagome is the one I love and if I ever hear you speak about her in such a way again, I will beat you within an inch of your life, you ignorant, little bitch!” Kouga was pissed. How dare she come into his personal chambers and verbally attack what was his. He was her Alpha, even though he had refrained from making her submit in the past, this blatant threat to his woman would not go ignored. She would submit to his command or be punished. “Fuck you Kouga!” She yelled as her resolve snapped with a very audible snarl. She lunged for Kagome, teeth barred and claws extended, ready to tear the slumbering onna to shreds. It took Kouga less than a split second to react. He rushed toward Ayame and reached his arms out to encircle her waist trying to tackle her to the stone floor, but she pivoted out of his reach and resumed her attack. She only had time to punch Kagome in the face before Kouga was on her. He tangled one clawed hand in her hair and wrapped another around her neck. He jerked her back with such force that she cried out, but he wasn’t listening to her pleas. He launched her across his den. Her head and back hit the stone wall with a sickly thud. He poised himself for another attack and growled menacingly at the offending bitch. That’s when he heard Kagome’s soft moan. He spun his head around to look at her, momentarily forgetting about Ayame. He watched her eyes flutter open and look around confused as she moaned again. She locked her eyes on him and he smiled. Ayame attacked during Kouga’s distraction. She sunk her claws into the back of the bend of his knees, causing him to snarl in pain and his knees to buckle. She rushed past him, but before she could reach Kagome, his hand clamped down around her ankle and jerked her foot out from under her. She went down hard, face first into the stone floor. He stood over her and grabbed a fist full of hair and jerked her to her feet. Her face was covered in blood from the injuries sustained from her fall, but she never relented. She struck out at him again and caught him across the face with one clawed hand and down his exposed chest with the other, leaving angry gashes in their wake. He back handed her hard, but she didn’t stop clawing at him. He could feel the blood dripping down his body, but he had to get the insane demoness away from his woman. Saburo rushed in, followed by Ginta and Hakkaku, and took in the scene in front of him. It was obvious that Ayame had tried to hurt Kagome, but she had failed miserably. She was now focusing all her energy on Kouga, who had her by the hair at the nape of her neck in one hand and holding one of her hands in his other. She still lashed out with her free hand and Kouga’s growling intensified. It was clear he was losing control. He knew his friend was trying desperately to contain his rage in front of the now conscious priestess, but was quickly losing the inner battle. Saburo took a few steps forward and put one hand around Ayame’s neck from behind and grabbed her flailing clawed hand with his other one, but she continued to snarl and writhe against their combined grips. When Saburo spoke it was hushed, but held the promise of certain death. “I told you what would happen if you disobeyed me, bitch. You have attacked your Alpha and his intended unjustly which is punishable under pack law by death.” She opened her mouth to speak, but it was Kouga that cut her off. “Your grandfather cannot save you. He is an Elder and is bound by honor to uphold the ancient laws. You have sealed your fate Ayame.” Kouga said in the same tone that Saburo used. Ayame trembled with fear. “Hakkaku, Ginta, restrain her and remove her from here.” Saburo ordered. Neither he nor Kouga released their hold on her until they were sure she was secured by the other two. Ginta and Hakkaku led a very resigned Ayame out of the den with cold hard-set eyes. They were clearly not happy that she had tried to harm their human sister. He watched them leave to ensure the threat was gone, and then focused his attention on his little sister. Her eyes were open and she was staring at them with her big brown eyes clouded with confusion and fear. He reached out a hand to stop Kouga when he turned to go to her, gaining a warning growl at his actions. “Kouga, she’s scared and confused, can’t you smell it? You need to cleanup and calm down before you go to her. You could frighten her more.” He watched as Kouga nodded in concession and walked to the other side of the den to wash in the cold waters. Kagome was snapped back into consciousness by a jarring pain in her cheek. She tasted the metallic bitterness of her blood pooling on her tongue. Why did they hit her again? Hadn’t they done enough? She slowly opened her eyes, but she couldn’t focus. Through the blur in her mind and eyes she could tell she was warm and in some kind of cave. There was a fire blazing in the corner. As her mind cleared she began to register angry snarls and growls and her chest clenched in fear. She didn’t know where she was or how she had gotten there. She moved her head toward the direction of the angry rumbles and blinked to clear her vision. She was comforted immediately. It was Kouga and he was flashing her a heart stopping, toothy smile. She could see the relief flood his captivating blue eyes. She tried to smile back, but her attention was diverted to the female behind him. She attacked Kouga and sent him to his knees. Then the attacker lunged at her. Kagome tried to move to slid out of the way, but her body wouldn’t heed her commands. Then she was gone with a sickly thud that made Kagome’s skin crawl. She watched as Kouga hauled her to her feet and she attacked him again and again with her claws. With every swipe, with every trickle of crimson blood that flowed from Kouga’s body, Kagome’s heart clenched. Why was this female trying to kill her? Why was she doing this to Kouga? A tall wolf demon rushed into the room. He was handsome, but not as handsome as Kouga. He had long, grey hair that flowed from his high ponytail to his ankles in ringlets and had piercing green eyes. He was clad in the same kind of armor and furs Kouga usually wore, but his tail was a snowy white, whereas Kouga’s was a light tan color. He was followed by two familiar faces. She couldn’t help but smile at her brothers despite the situation. It was so good to see them, but they hardly noticed her. Ginta gave her a small smile before turning his attention to the scene before them. “…You have sealed your fate, Ayame.” She heard Kouga say in a voice she had never heard him use and the inflection of venom in the tone scared her. Ayame! It was Ayame who attacked her. Didn’t Kouga mate her? He had laid a claim on Ayame first and since he had relinquished his claim over her several years ago, she had been almost certain that they had mated and that was the reason he never came around. She just figured that he held no interest in her anymore because of his commitment to Ayame and she was okay with that. She only wanted him to be happy, but why was Ayame so mad? What had she done to cause her to attack her mate and try to kill her? She watched Hakkaku and Ginta carry Ayame from the room and strained her ears to hear what the white wolf was saying to Kouga, but to no avail. She watched Kouga nod and he walked past her, out of her line of sight, giving her an apologetic look as he passed. Great Kami, there was so much blood. Her heart twisted again and she winched. “Are you in pain, sister?” The white wolf asked kneeling beside her. “I…I’m o-ok-kay.”She stammered out in a grainy small voice. “W-where am I?” “You are in the eastern wolf dens. I am Saburo, Kouga’s right hand.” “K-K-Kagome.” “It’s my honor and pleasure, sister Kagome and might I add that Kouga was every bit correct about how lovely your eyes are. We have been waiting to see them for some time now.” He said with a sweet smile. Kagome felt the heat rise in her cheeks and Saburo chuckled lightly. “H-how l-l-long w-w-was I…” She broke off in a set of rough, dry coughs. She felt a hand go under her head and a cup placed to her lips. She drank the cool liquid down greedily. Gods, she was so thirsty and her throat was raw. “Shhh, sister. Rest your voice. I’ll tell you everything.” Saburo said in a velvety tone while rubbing her hair to comfort her. “I found you while you were being attacked by the snake demons and brought you here. The healers stopped the bleeding, but your injuries were grave. You’ve been sleeping for almost three months now. Kouga has been your caregiver and he’s never left your side.” She let his words sink in deep. She had been in a coma for three months. Three whole months! Three months with Kouga taking care of her every need. Her every need meaning cleaning and dressing her wounds, probably force feeding her broth and cleaning up after she…Oh Great Kami Above! Her face flamed and she thought she was going to die of embarrassment. “What did you say to her, Saburo?” Kouga hissed as he knelt beside the white wolf close to her head. “Are you okay, Kagome? Are you in pain?” Her face burned even more when his concerned sapphire orbs met hers. The only thing she could manage was to shake her head which caused the concern in his eyes to deepen. “Calm down, Kouga. She’s fine, just a little weak. It’s nothing a good solid meal won’t cure. It hurts her to talk so go easy on the questions, okay brother. I told her what happened and how long she was out. Look, I’m going to put a pot of stew on the fire for her and leave you two alone.” Saburo said and returned his gaze to Kagome. His face softened and he gave her a reassuring smile. “You know, beautiful, I may not look it, but I’m a damn good cook.” She smiled and he chuckled giving her a wink. Kouga just rolled his eyes and shook his head. She watched as Saburo moved to the shelves in the adjacent corner from the fire and gathered a few things into a pot; he walked past her and then returned, placing the pot on the fire. He ducked out of the covered opening without another word. She liked him. He was sweet and had a good sense of humor. He obviously respected Kouga and that made her like him that much more, but he had left her alone…with Kouga who had seen her…and had cleaned her up after she had… She groaned and closed her eyes. Her face burned with an intensity she never thought possible. “Kagome are you sure you’re okay?” Kouga’s voice was the same, rough baritone she remembered, but it was laced with worry. “I-I’m f-f-ine, K-Koug…” She was wracked by another series of coughs. Kouga lifted her head gently and placed the cup to her lips letting her drink her fill. “I’m sorry, Kagome. I shouldn’t have made you talk.” She shook her head trying to tell him not to worry about it. “Do you want to sit up?” She nodded and he put his arm under her shoulders and lifted her up to sitting position. Then crawled behind her and rested her bare back on his chest which was almost completely healed, thanks to his demon blood, and wrapped his arms around her waist. This was nice, him holding her like this. He always was a sweetheart. Wait a minute, she could feel her skin touching his and not just on her arms. She looked down at her bare cleavage peeking from the top of the fur blanket and her bare shoulders. ‘GAH!’ She was naked. Right on queue her face flamed again. She was sure she looked like a flaming cherry. Had she been naked the full three months? Didn’t he know what clothes were? She knew that she had been injured bad enough to send her into a coma, so more than likely she had been covered for the most part with bandages. Then combine that with her inability to relieve herself properly, he probably found it easier to just leave her under the blankets. She knew Kouga would never do anything to compromise her honor. He was a gentleman…errr…demon. Her mind suddenly flashed back to the youkai that had attacked her, remembering the way he had strapped her to the tree and shuddered. “Are you getting cold, Kagome?” Kouga asked tightening his hold on her and resting his chin on top of her head. She nodded, not because she was cold, but because she wanted something to wear. He released her waist and rubbed his large hands up and down her upper arms trying to warm her up. The sensation sent tingles up her spine and when he nuzzled the top of her head, her heart skipped a beat. She had never felt that before and it made her uncomfortable. “I’ll get you another blanket to wrap up in. Do you think you can sit on your own?” He waited for her nod and slowly backed away, keeping his hands firmly on her upper arms to make sure she didn’t fall. Then he released her and she exhaled a breath she didn’t know she was holding. She was weak and it hurt her muscles to support her own weight, but she had to regain her strength. She knew Kouga had a pack to take care of and he had spent three months day and night by her side, taking care of her fool self. She had taken him away from his duties as a leader because she was too busy paying attention to everything but her surroundings. What was worse she had probably shoved a wedge in between him and his mate. No wonder Ayame was pissed. Why didn’t he just let some of the females tend to her? Why did he do this himself? She felt a heavy weight settle over her bare shoulders and nearly toppled over. She felt his hand steady her and heard rustling coming from behind her. “Alright, I got some furs behind you to prop you up so you won’t overdo yourself. Go ahead and lean back.” She did as he said and was instantly relieved of the burning strain on her muscles. Kouga walked over to the pot that was emitting a very scrumptious aroma that made her mouth water. He scooped out some of the stew into a bowl and grabbed a set of chopsticks from one of the shelves. He settled down beside her. “Do you want to try to feed yourself or do you want me to do it?” He asked earnestly. She felt her face flame again and this time he picked up on her humiliation. “Oh, no, Kagome! I didn’t mean it like that. You don’t need to feel embarrassed and I swear to you I never did anything inappropriate. I just took care of you is all. I don’t mind, really. I never meant for you to feel uncomfortable. I’m sorry, but it…it scared me seeing you like that. When Saburo brought you here, we didn’t…I didn’t know if you were going to make it. You were hurt really bad, Kagome.” “T-thank y-y-you, K-Kouga.” She rasped quietly, giving him the best smile she could at the moment. “Don’t mention it. So you want to try to eat something solid?” He asked with a grin. She smiled in earnest and nodded. He fed her slowly and held the bowl to her lips to drink the broth. The warmth had soothed her aching throat and her voice wasn’t as cracked, but she couldn’t raise it above a soft whisper. Saburo was right, the stew was delicious. “You should eat too, Kouga. It’s really good.” “I’ll eat a little later. We need to talk though, Kagome.” Kouga said sadly. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
