Chapter 5:
Kagome sat just inside the building as her friends digested the news she brought. Shippo sat curled against her as she ran her fingers through his tail. Sango’s expression went from shocked to thoughtful. Miroku and Kaede appeared outwardly calm but their eyes told a different story. Kagome quietly waited for her friends and guardians to pass judgment on her for her choice. She was no fool; there was a price to be paid for her choice in the fate of her once close friend. Shippo, she could tell, would not condemn her. He would forever be by her side. Her friends would stick by her until the end but their opinion and view of her would take a significant blow. Sango opened her mouth to say something but no sound came out. She slowly closed her mouth and thought for a moment before trying again. “Sesshomaru… killed Inuyasha.” Sango looked to Kagome for confirmation. Kagome nodded. “And you say that you stood by and watched him do it without any objection?” Kagome nodded again. “And he protected you from a Wind Scar that was going to hit you dead on?” Kagome nodded. Sango sat back and whistled. “I didn’t know he had it in him.” Kagome tilted her head to the side in question. Miroku chuckled a bit and clarified. “Sesshomaru was protecting you. That is a little out of the ordinary and will take a bit to get used to.” Kagome frowned at her friends. “You are not shocked to find out that Inuyasha is dead, that it was my choice to let him die. You’re wrapped up in the fact that Sesshomaru honored his vow to protect me?” Sango and Miroku started laughing. “What did you expect from us Kagome-sama? That we would look down on you? We were both there when he turned his back on you. We were there when he struck you and when you would not let us come to your aid against him. We stayed with you, not him. Had you left at any point we would have followed you.” Sango nodded her agreement. “He can suffer his fate and wait in Hell for Kikyo to join him. You are our family and we want nothing but your happiness. If you felt he deserved it then good! I’m glad you finally see it my way.” Kagome shook her head at her friends as a smile spread across her face. She glanced toward Kaede and saw her gentle smile directed toward her. “Ye are always a child of mine, blood or no. I stand by your choices Kagome, I always have.” Kagome hugged Kaede briefly. Kaede pattered her back in comfort. “There is something that I wish to give to you as they are rightfully yours. Follow me.” Kaede stood and walked out of the hut. Kagome followed after her through the village to an outlying storage hut that was never used by the villagers. Kaede motioned toward it and stepped back. Kagome raised one brow in question before shrugging and stepping closer to examine the building. There were faint designs etched into the wood from top to bottom. Kagome’s breath hitched as she saw her name etched into one of the doors. She slowly reached her hand toward it. She was suddenly stopped when Sesshomaru appeared and grabber her wrist in a vice. His eyes were edged with red as he growled at the old miko. Kaede bowed deeply to the demon lord before gesturing toward the building once more. Sesshomaru turned his attention to the structure and frowned in thought. “This building… how did it come to be here?” Kagome smiled slightly as she heard his demand to the miko. “It has been in this spot since before I was born. It was placed, in trust, with the miko of this village for centuries by a very powerful tenshi who said to wait until one with a pure heart comes with a demon at her side to claim what is hers.” Sesshomaru glanced at Kagome out of the corner of his eyes to see her smiling at the building. He released her wrist and she finished her move to touch the etchings. When her fingers made contact the etchings began to glow a bright white. Then the whole half of the building was glowing dimly while the other half remained dark. Kagome frowned before grabbing for Sesshomaru’s hand. Sesshomaru growled a bit at the tenshi. Kagome glared at him for a second before taking his hand and pushing it toward the other door. “Find it.” Sesshomaru looked at where her hand was touching and saw it was her name. Sesshomaru searched the other door. He saw his title first. He raised his hand toward it but stopped. He kept looking at the door for a moment before making his decision. He changed his directed to the exact opposite of hers and touched the word for protector and guardian. The words began glowing bright green as the dark half of the building began to light up. Suddenly the doors began to open inward to reveal a dark interior. The brightness of the outside made it even harder to see within the small structure. Kagome glanced at the demon lord and saw him staring intently into the building. “Sesshomaru?” The demon lord stared into the darkness for a few more seconds before turning to the miko. “You may proceed.” Kagome bowed slightly to him before stepping into the hut. Four torched flared to life in each of the corners of the room as the outside grew dim again. In the center of the hut stood a full set of battle armor shining brightly in the torch light. It was pure silver with white trimming and designs etched into the plate. In front of the armor lay a beautiful sword. It was the perfect length for her height and build. Its blade was polished to a gleaming silver. The hilt was made of pure ivory with designs matching the armor. Kagome stepped around the armor and saw a large portion of the back missing to give her wings room once she got them. There was also an attachable plate lying behind the armor. Kagome touched the armor lightly with the tips of her fingers and sighed as the armor seemed to sing to her through the contact. Kagome looked up at Sesshomaru with wide eyes and a slight smile upon her mouth. Sesshomaru stared at the armor, his face set in stone. Without a word, he turned on his heel and walked away. Kagome’s face fell as she watched him leave. “Tis alright, child, there is still time.” Kagome looked at Kaede as she stepped into the hut and nodded before turning back to the armor. “You know it as well then?” Kagome’s voice was quiet and spoken into the hut to prevent Sesshomaru from hearing her. Kaede patted her back before nodding. “This old woman can still see the path of destiny when it is laid out in front of her. But you have known since you found out he was your protector, haven’t you?” Kagome nodded. “Tis alright, there is still so much left to do before the choice has to be made. There is still so much time in which to change his mind.” Kagome smiled sadly down at the old miko. “I was human, a miko, and now a tenshi. I do not back down from what I think is right and I care for all living things, no matter what or who they are. These are not qualities he is looking for in a mate. I will find my wings because I cannot wait any longer; because I cannot stand the pain any longer. And then I will wait for his rejection and travel into the mountains before my passing.” Kaede smiled kindly up at her before turning from the hut. “There is still time, child. There is still time.” Kagome shut the door after her and turned once more toward the armor. “I will do what I must and accept what life has given me. I will ask for no more than that.” Kagome reached for the armor and began to ready for her travels. ************************* Sango, Miroku and Shippo all stood outside with Kaede as they waited for Kagome to emerge from the small hut. They talked quietly to themselves, glancing at Sesshomaru some distance away. They trusted his word but also knew that he could cause great harm to befall the young woman they protected. Sango studied him discreetly as she spoke with Miroku. He held his body tense and his eyes never moved from the little hut. He did not blink but did not make any move toward his sword. She was unsure as to what he was waiting to happen. Suddenly the doors to the small hut parted slightly before flying open. Kagome stepped from the hut in full battle regalia, her armor shown like the sun in the bright light of mid-day. She looked fierce and yet calm at the same time. The sword hanging from her waist seemed to hum quietly into the air. Kaede walked up to Kagome and presented her with a white cloth. Kagome shook it out gently and twirled it around her to form a cloak to hide most of her armor. Kagome smiled gently to the woman before making her way toward her friends. They all stood with mouths agape as she approached. Her step light and her face set in determination. Miroku bowed slightly to her as she stopped before them. “My Lady, you look beautiful.” Kagome nodded toward him and looked toward Sesshomaru. Their eyes locked for a moment before Kagome turned away. She smiled gently toward Shippo who stood with wide eyes looking up at her. “Wow, oka-san. You look like a warrior. Where are your bow and arrows though?” Kagome gestured towards to old miko’s hut. “Still inside with the rest of the things. I do plan on taking them with me.” Shippo nodded. “Tenshi,” Kagome turned her full attention to the demon lord. “Yes, Sesshomaru-sama?” Kagome waited patiently for him to respond. He studied her attire for a minute before speaking. “We leave soon. Be ready.” Sesshomaru turned on his heel and walked toward the forest. Kagome bowed toward his retreating figure. “Of course, Sesshomaru-sama, we will be ready to depart shortly.” Sesshomaru did not pause at her reply. Kagome turned back towards her friends with a blinding smile. “We should finish packing. If we do not leave soon then we will waste the whole day and have to start out tomorrow.” The others agreed and began making their way toward the hut where their supplies were. Kagome paused and looked back toward Sesshomaru’s retreating figure. (We do not have as much time and you think Kaede. Time is short and fleeting in these days to follow. If I am to survive the journey then he will need to find his heart quickly. My destiny already lay before me. Of the two paths that lay ahead, he is the only one who can decide which my feet will follow.) “Kagome!” She turned back to her friends and sprinted to catch up with them as they entered the hut. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
