Chapter 5
(A/N: As promised, chapter 5 in less than a weeks time, enjoy.)
Tamari sat up awake all night in the treetops in her homespun silk hammock, contemplating and ranting to herself, 'What is it about that girl that has Naraku treating her different? It's not like she's that strong and certainly not more attractive than I. I wouldn't be surprised if she exaggerated. That must be it. Kagome merely exaggerated the 'supposed' events and Naraku has no interest in her. But… I need to see for sure.' Jealousy was slowly consuming the otherwise carefree Tamari, halted only by denial. If what the girl claimed was true, she would need to find a way to cease their interactions before Naraku no longer had any desire for her. Tamari's paranoid thoughts were getting way ahead of her.
As the group began gathering up their things, preparing to travel by air until clear of the spider-head forest, they were surprised to see that Tamari had intentions of joining them.
"You may need a guide," she stated offhandedly, "after all, it can be disorienting to fall asleep in one location and wake up in another." She giggled as Inuyasha scowled at her.
"We don't need your help," he barked back. He was still quite suspicious of her due to her apparent relationship, or whatever it was, with Naraku.
"Your offer is most kind," Miroku interjected, "I am sure, however, that we could manage on our own. There is no need for us to cause you anymore inconvenience."
"Oh, it's no trouble," she waved her hand dismissively.
"I think there might be more to it," Kagome whispered to Sango. She wasn't quiet enough though, evident as a turn and twitch of Inuyasha's sensitive ears.
"What's your real reason for wanting to come along?" he questioned with an edge to his voice.
Tamari giggled again, "Okay, you got me. It seems your group crosses paths much more frequently with Naraku than I do. It only makes sense that if I tag along, I'll eventually see him when he shows."
"What?!" Shippo piped up, this being the first time he heard about her even knowing Naraku. "Do you want to kill Naraku too? What did he do to you?"
Not wanting Shippo to realize Tamari was not an enemy to Naraku, Kagome quickly spoke up, "Inuyasha, there is no harm in Tamari joining us. You forget she saved us just a bit ago."
Inuyasha just harrumphed and stalked off a few paces to cool down. A few moments later he hollered behind him, "Fine, but climb on already, we are losing daylight. And don't expect us to wait up for you Tamari. Keep up or get left behind."
"Oh, I'll have no problem keeping up," she smiled, extending her large, sparkling wings and propelling herself effortlessly into the sky, waiting for the rest to catch up.
They reached Kaede's village in record time due to Inuyasha trying to out run his flying companions. Kilala was panting from carrying two adults and a child but Tamari hardly seemed phased when they arrived, much to Inuyasha's dismay. He, himself, was slightly winded and Tamari's triumphant smile didn't help his perpetual foul mood either.
As soon as they arrived at Kaede's hut, he deposited Kagame off his back rougher than usual and instantly sprang away to his usual perch in the nearby tree branches. He already knew Kagome would be headed home and was in no mood to argue about when she'd return. He'd just go fetch her when he decided it was time.
The group introduced Tamari to Kaede so she would know not to attack the friendly demon should any of the villagers panic from her presence, then Tamari opted to reside in the woods for the remainder of the stay. Her large wings didn't fit through the doorways without much convincing and she felt more at home in the trees than in a wooden box anyways.
After filling Kaede in on the general occurrences from their latest outing, Kagome headed towards the well to go home. She refused the offer of being escorted to the well by her friends. It wasn't that far away afterall, and Inuyasha was still in the area should a demon get near the village. She wanted time to think, alone, without worrying about Miroku's wandering hand or keeping up a conversation with Sango or Shippo.
She reached the well way too soon; as soon as she went through, her family would be all over her for news. Instead, she decided to sit alone on the lip of the well, taking in the crisp, clean air as she let her mind go over the recent, troubling events.
'So, Naraku is planning something. Well duh, when isn't he planning some evil scheme or another?' she ranted in her mind. 'What could he possibly want with me though. If he wants to turn me to his side, not that I'd ever do that, it would be better for him to aim for Kikyo. She is more powerful and has already helped him in the past, it would make more sense. So that can't be it.' Kagome tried her hardest to visualize his point of view objectively and without fear or hatred of him. 'Maybe he wants history to repeat, have two women hurt Inuyasha. Foolish. I can't hurt Inuyasha, he doesn't love me like he loved… loves, Kikyo. And it can't be to simply get close enough to get my shards,' she fingered the bottle of shards in her pocket. 'The only other reason would be lust, whether he desires me or simply sees me as a replacement for Kikyo, but that rational falls through too. If that was all it was, he wouldn't have waited.' She hung her head, cradling it in her hands. 'And why on earth did I ever let him get that close to me anyways? When he's near, it's like I lose all control of my actions. My sense of reason flies out of my ears or something.' The small visual made her giggle a bit before resuming her serious, internal monologue. 'Next time, I have to keep my distance. I will not be your prey, Naraku!'
She rose her head triumphantly, nodded to herself and shouldered her bag, prepared to go home. As if on que, Naraku appears out of the trees behind her, intentionally snapping a twig underfoot to alert her to his presence. He had been watching the emotions play across her face as she set alone on the well. His dark aura was kept firmly under wraps, lest his presence be detected by all.
Her back went rigid, almost afraid to turn around and verify what she already suspected, but even more terrified to jump into the well and inform the one behind her of her most guarded secret. Little did she know, he already knew about her habit of disappearing down the well. She was, afterall, standing in this very clearing the first time he saw her.
As fast as her body could move, and in a surprisingly graceful way, she spun around, grabbed her bow, and nocked an arrow, all in one movement.
Her suspicions confirmed, "Stay where you are, Naraku." His only response was a low chuckle at her antics. "I mean it, one step and I'll shoot."
"Dear Kagome," he taunted her, "caught alone in my presence again. You act as if I'm about to eat you alive."
The possibility briefly flashed through Kagome's mind, but was quickly dismissed. He was trying to make her fear seem like a ridiculous overreaction.
"Ha, nice try Naraku," she countered, a venomous humor lacing her voice, "but I'm not as foolish as you think I am. Do you think I haven't noticed? I don't know how, but every time you are near me, something changes in me. I won't be your puppet!" Her voice was firm, but not yelling. Alerting her friends might get them hurt. As of late, Naraku had not physically hurt her. It gave her a sense of security, even if it was foolhardy of her.
He chuckled again, "No, a puppet would be no fun at all."
"What do you want with me?" her voice was showing the first signs of cracking. His presence was truly unnerving.
"Have I not made that explicitly clear already?" he flashed a grin that could only be described as wickedly lustful. Without her consent, sinful thoughts began creeping into her mind.
She gulped, seemingly trying to swallow down the tempting visuals, "What makes you think I would ever let you have me? After all the pain you caused those I care for. We will kill you, Naraku." She seemed so sure of herself, but her arms were getting tired from holding the string taut for so long. Imperceptible to herself, she was slowly letting the bow resume it's normal, undrawn position.
He gave her a second to feel confident, "Kill me... hmmm, kill me, for what?" He was mocking her, she just knew it.
"For everything," she seethed, pulling her bow's string tight again, "Miroku's wind tunnel, Sango's village, Koga's tribe, and Inuyasha's faked betrayal of Kikyo!" She was getting angry now, recalling all of his actions, and ashamed, for ever letting herself forget them and enjoy his embrace.
He seemed thoughtful for a second, "How much you know of these events, is only what you have been told by those who wish me dead. Has it ever occurred to you, that you may not have been told the entire story?"
His response shocked her into silence, "Wh-what do y-you mean? My friends wouldn't lie to me." Just as he thought, she was too kind to hate for blind reasons. Even the possibility of a decent motive was enough to make her think twice.
"That monk, your friend Miroku's grandfather, what have you been told about that encounter which resulted in the air void curse?" he gauged her reaction.
Anger, but not as much as before, flared again, "That when he found you disguised as a princess, you cursed him and fled."
"A much edited version for sure," he commented nonchalantly. This obviously peaked her curiosity. Her tired arm was relaxing her hold on the bowstring again. "In my early days, he began hunting me. Unfortunately for me, he was too powerful to defeat. Unfortunately for him, my power can easily grow. Eventually, I acquired the ability to inflict curses. What transpired was simply self-defense."
"But why was he hunting you in the first place?" she questioned harshly. "From what I was told, you devoured people!"
He laughed, honestly amused, "The paranoia of mortals is pathetic. The forms I assumed were predominantly of deceased humans. A slain warrior, a frozen traveler, sickened princess on her deathbed who made a 'miraculous' recovery."
Taking all this new information in, a finger on her lip in thought as her bow and arrow hung in her limp arm, all Kagome managed was, "Oh." Her mind was reeling in circles, 'That was not what I had expected. I assumed he'd been murdering villages and... wait, villages, Sango's village. Certainly there was no valid reason for that.' "What about the slayers village, Sango's people?" she snapped.
He smiled slyly, "What would you do if you witnessed children being slaughtered for the crimes of their parents?" He knew she was a protective, motherly girl and this question would elicit a strong reaction. He enjoyed her anger.
Her fists balled at her sides, "I'd stop whoever committed such an vile act."
"'Stop' is such a mild and vague word," he pointed out. "Would you kill the perpetrator? Whether they be demon, or human? What if the one harmed was your little kit?" The last word seemed to linger in the clearing, echoing through Kagome's mind.
She cast a quick, nervous glance toward the village until she realized his words were not meant to be a threat. Her mind and heart were waging a mini war. She slew demons everyday, but what really was the difference between an evil demon or an evil human?
"Irregardless of what you would have done, the demons residing in the forest surrounding the slayer village had need for revenge," he stated matter of factly. "There was no boundary to those humans. A demon was a demon to them. Whether innocent child or not, it made no difference. I simply offered them their desire."
"I don't believe that Sango was like that though," Kagome countered. "I mean, she has a demon as a companion even, Kilala."
"Ask her yourself what evidence she required before being hired to slay a demon," he told her.
"I will," Kagome agreed defiantly, sure that he had exaggerated about Sango.
"Now, what other accusations had you thrown at me," he said mockingly, receiving a glare, "ah, yes. The wolf-demon tribe. I am actually quite surprised that you have yet to piece this very obvious puzzle together."
"Elaborate, Naraku. I'm not here to play games," she grit out at his insult to her intelligence, crossing her arms across her chest, bow still in hand.
"As you please," he exaggerated a mock-curtesy. "What is so evil about defending ones home and possessions from an invading, thieving force?" Again, her anger dropped, replaced by realization and surprise. "Those wolves deserve no pity for a failed ransack attempt on my castle."
"I never thought of it that way," Kagome mumbled to herself. "Okay, all that made sense, but... that still doesn't get you off the hook for what you did to Kikyo and Inuyasha though," Kagome reminded. "Kikyo took care of you, err, Onigumo, I mean, and Inuyasha had never even met you."
"Tell me, Kagome," he grinned at her, "how many times have you wished Kikyo was gone? Out of the way so you could have Inuyasha to yourself?"
"Never," she answered automatically.
"Is that so, Kagome?" he pried. "Do you forget I have seen inside your mind? It is pointless to try and lie to me."
Her face blanched. She had wished on several occasions that Kikyo was where she was supposed to be, dead. The thought of sending her there herself had even occurred a time or two, albeit fleeting, when Kikyo had tried to drag Inuyasha to hell with her.
"Onigumo was such a foolish and jealous human. From the time the demons combined with his wretched soul he refused to cease his incessant demands for Kikyo," Naraku recalled bitterly. "Simply killing Inuyasha myself would not have earned the favor with Kikyo needed to quiet his irritating voice. I instead attempted to nudge her towards killing him herself. Her death was just as satisfying though. With her eliminated, Onigumo's demands held no weight. Upon her revival, however-" a sneer crossed his face as he broke off from his sentence. The meaning clear.
"So, you still want Kikyo don't you? I'm just a replacement to you as well?" her expression changing to rejected, her head hung slightly.
"Ha, you miss the distinction, Kagome. Onigumo still desires Kikyo, not I, Naraku," he corrected. She lifted her head back up. "Nay, I despise the wench."
"It was still wrong to do that to them," she stated definitively.
"Perhaps," he agreed, but showed no remorse, "but how can you condemn me to death when you yourself have harbored similar desires of eliminating the competition?"
"But I didn't act on those desires," she defended.
"Simply because you were unable to bring a suitable plan to fruition," he grinned. She was silent. "What if I were to offer you Kikyo's death? Inuyasha needn't know; you would not be blamed."
"No!" she responded out of habit.
"And why not? Do you not wish to have your precious Inuyasha to yourself?" he goaded skillfully.
"I...," she stopped, realizing just what she was about to say, shocked at its truth, "I no longer," another pause, "want Inuyasha, not like that." She briefly thought how Naraku was able to bring about all these revelations in such a short time that she hadn't even admitted to herself yet.
"Oh?" he feigned surprise as he began closing the distance. "Since when?" The smirk on his face showed he already knew the answer: since he gave her someone else to obsess about.
She leveled a glare at him that could hardly be considered angry, more like annoyed at his cockiness. Avoiding a direct answer, she went a different direction with the conversation, "Hey, who said you were allowed to get closer?" Her voice held a slight panic, not wanting the nearness to hamper her rational side again. She still wasn't sure how it was he could inhibit her so. They were so close to the village, Inuyasha could happen by at any time and if he were to catch them in a compromising position, such that Naraku seemed adept at getting her into, he'd be furious, to say the least.
"Why do you resist, Kagome?" he questioned seductively. "You know you enjoy my touch. There is no need to uphold your flawlessly innocent and pure reputation to me." She glanced unsure back towards the village, making sure no one had followed her and was spying on them. "Should anyone approach, I will detect their proximity," he reassured her.
She was still trembling as the distance between them vanished. Trying to regain that space, she shuffled her feet backwards only to have her heels find the side of the well behind her. He quickly encroached upon the meager area she gained, causing her to lean away from him out over the well. She would have been able to keep her delicate balance, even in such an awkward position, if it hadn't been for her impossibly stuffed backpack weighing her down. As her equilibrium shifted, she let out a short but loud screech, and her hands instinctively grasped for anything to regain her balance. One hand caught his sleeve and the other the lip of the well.
He looked down to where she gripped his clothes, struggling to right herself. The weight from her and her bag was beginning to pull the sleeve from its place, showing the skin of his shoulder. Mockingly, he teased her, "If you are so eager to have my clothing removed, you have but to say so." Her eyes widened in embarrassment and she quickly removed her grip, as if burned, but pulled down by her heavy bag and trying to catch herself, slapped her hand down on the opposite side if the well. Her feet were beginning to slip on the grass beneath. He placed his own foot over hers to gain control of her balance. She was simply not strong enough in such a position to pull herself up along with her backpack.
'Great,' Kagome scolded herself mentally, 'he managed to get me at his mercy again. Dammit, either I fall and he learns about the well or I go to him for help up and who knows what he'll do.' Kagome's arms were weakening as she weighed her options.
Naraku looked towards the village. Apparently, her squeal had alerted Inuyasha. No more stalling, he had to hasten. He leaned over her and the well, supporting himself on the edge above her head with one hand, and placing the other arm behind her back. She was silently grateful for the assistance in supporting herself. Her muscles had been about to give out.
Her lips were already parted, breathing heavy from her exertions. That made it all the easier for him. He met her lips before she could even comprehend his movement. She went rigid in shock, not anticipating the turn of events. He let his toxic breathe into her mouth, as he'd done every time he kissed her, before allowing the sensations he caused to increase, twining his skillful tongue with hers. Just as before, she was swiftly enveloped in the moment, focused on nothing but Naraku as he got her drunk off his essence and unspoken promise of pleasures unfathomable. He ended it abruptly however, whispering against her lips, "The mutt approaches." She was slowly returning to reality. "I will see you again, upon your return."
His words didn't seem to make sense in her dazed state, then it all clicked. Her eyes widened worriedly and in that exact moment, Naraku moved aside and released his hold on Kagome. The sudden lack of support was too much for the small girl. Her grip failed and her feet lost traction, causing her to plummet down the shaft of the well. Her instinctual fear of falling caused the scent to radiate throughout the clearing. A second later had her engulfed and cushioned by the blue light, signaling her travel through time.
Inuyasha showed up just in time to see the light fade and Naraku straightening himself and looking down the well. Inuyasha was simple-minded enough that he would only notice what he thought should be there. He'd pick out the scent of fear and completely bypassed the faint, blossoming scent of arousal.
"Naraku, what'd you do to Kagome?" he growled maliciously, drawing Tetsaiga. He only detected fear, no blood at least. Maybe the girl was smart enough to flee this time rather than face him alone. 'That's a first,' he scoffed internally.
"What an meaningless question from you, Inuyasha," Naraku retorted monotonously. "Does it really matter?"
"Answer me," he snarled, losing patience.
"What if I were to say she were unharmed, would you miraculously decide to 'spare me'?" he mocked with an evil chuckle. "Nay, irregardless of my answer, your actions will be the same."
"Fine by me, if it's my blade you're waiting for," he lept at Naraku, sword raised high, "I'll be happy to oblige!" Before a blow could be landed, Naraku evaporated into a cloud of miasma and took to the sky. His voice seemed to echo from everywhere, "I have no business with you this day, Inuyasha."
Inuyasha glared at the retreating cloud of miasma, "Coward! Get back here."
Miroku, Sango, Kilala, and Shippo showed up as Inuyasha sheathed Tetsaiga. "What was Naraku doing here?"
"I think it had something to do with Kagome," Inuyasha answered, slight worry in his voice. "He was looking down the well when I arrived."
"Is she alright?" Shippo fretted over his mother-figure's safety.
"I don't smell any blood," was Inuyasha's blunt answer.
"It may be wise to check up on her, just to make sure," Miroku advised.
"Yeah, who knows what he could have done," Sango agreed, thinking of the possible injuries that don't cause blood-shed.
"Alright," Inuyasha agreed, wary of what he'd find on the other side of the well.
(A/N: I know the dialogue between Naraku and Kagome was a bit long winded, but I felt those main points needed to be addressed before Kagome could feel at least semi-comfortable/safe in his presence. As to his claims, who is to say which are true and which have been twisted for his use. Opinions, which would you guys prefer? And don't worry, as I said before I will not make Naraku grow soft, but where exactly on the evilness scale should he fall?)
