Kouga came back a week later with the news. Karumiru hosted a gathering for potential allies. The party was lavish and naked human women served the guests. Men and women where painted silver and made to stand in painful positions on top of pedestals. A few humans hung from the ceiling from their toes like ornaments. When the stag lord finally arrived, Kouga was appalled. From his mighty antlers hung vials on silk braided ropes. From the smell they contained human blood, mixed with a perfume that hid the scent of fermentation. Kouga relayed that Sesshomaru was in attendance, and even he seemed disgusted. After a very uncomfortable dinner, Karumiru announced his plans. Humans had been the burden of the demon race since the dawn of time, said he, citing off a vast list of reasons of their uselessness. Demon sympathizers where, to him, only a minor step up from the whole of ningen. Hanyous being two steps from them. Demons should be feared and respected as gods, not sought out by humans to slay. They were stronger, smarter, and better than them; so why shouldn’t their divinity be absolute?
Most of the demons began smiling and nodding along with Karumiru. Sesshomaru was the first to stand against their host, calling the demon ‘moronic, narcissistic, and uneducated in the ways of the world.’ At that point, Kouga and a few others began backing him up. When Sesshomaru made a superior argument, many others joined. It got down to a duel. The stag lord backed down, knowing fully that he couldn’t beat the western lord. In the end, the guests left with a few captured subjects from their respective territories. Sesshomaru and a few others stayed behind to talk more with the lord, Kouga assumed. So, it seemed as if Sesshomaru averted a potential genocidal crisis. Great. Mother and father were wary, however. Apparently, in their experience, bad people like Karumiru always come back with a vengeance. But, there wasn’t much they could do at this point that hadn’t already been taken care of. All they could do is live day-to-day, and hope that the plot never arose again.
Kouga didn’t tell me this story directly, because I was six at the time. But I was told eventually, when it was apparent that I really needed to know. I’m Kachio. Titles don’t mean much to me, but if you must know; I am the eldest son of the saviors of Japan, fourth in line of the western territories, master of vaulting, distinguished general, and a savior of the world. But, we’ll get to all of that later. On the day I am recounting, it would be… eight years after my sister’s last entry.
Years passed by like a flicker of light. We got bigger and more argumentative. Mother had her third child, Tsuki, a boy. Rin and Shippo had their boy Atsu. Lord Sesshomaru mated an inu demoness named Mui and had two pups, Rintsuki and Yukiyuu. And Kaede did indeed become frail and move into our large multi-family household. On a morning a little after my fourteenth birthday, while I was carrying a bucket of water to the house, I noticed Ah-Uh standing next to my front porch. Sesshomaru often came to visit Rin, so it was never odd when Oji-san dropped on. I made my way to our bathhouse, located a few feet away from the house in the back.
“Thank you darling.”
Mother said as I walked in and dumped the water in my sister’s bath. She was still pouting from the earlier incident. She had woken up to her first menstrual cycle, promptly earning screams of disgust from the twins when they discovered that they had been sleeping in my sister’s mess. Ryuumiu didn’t get embarrassed easily, but she did start crying when Miroku burst into the room and gagged at the sight of the blood-soaked mattress. That was when I sprinted in, thinking that something had befallen the girls. It was a little uncomfortable carrying my crying sister outside, as I got a little blood on my arm. But, bodily fluids never disgusted me. I helped mother bathe her. Again, seeing my sister naked did not unhinge me. I’d seen everybody in the house naked at least once, Yuuaa and Ryuumiu being more comfortable stripping down when we went to swim.
“Did you know that Oji-san is here?”
I asked mother, taking a comb from the floor and brushing Ryuumiu’s hair back.
“I knew he was coming at some point today.”
She went silent after that for a few minutes. The only sounds being the passing of the comb as I neatly braided my sister’s hair. Then mother spoke again.
“Make yourself presentable, love. Your uncle needs to speak to the both of you.”
Uh-oh. The way mother’s face dropped slightly has me even more worried than, ‘Sesshomaru wants to talk to you.’
“Yes, mother.”
There was no point asking questions. Uncle would answer them once I got inside.
“Why? Did we do something?”
Ryuumiu asked mother tensely.
“You’ll just have to see when you get inside.”
Mother said. She stood up and reached for one of my sister’s nicer kimonos, holding it out while Ryuumiu got out and wiped the water from her body. I crinkled my nose at the offending smell of her heat. One of nature’s many miracles was the small blessing of a family member’s reproductive organs smelling as tempting as a pile of cow dung. Probably to prevent incest. My sister walked into the kimono and held it to her chest as mother wrapped the obi around. I combed out my hair and listened to my mother as she held out a thick rag and a wrap. That was my cue to go. I grabbed a clean robe from the corner and slipped it on, quickly scurrying out the door. I was curious about many things, but the application of a menstrual rag was not one of them.
I arrived in the house to find it completely crowded in the front room. Mother had taken out our long dining table, placing it horizontally in front of the fire. Uncle sat at the right and, father at the left. To uncle’s right sat Rin, Atsu, Shippo, Sango, Miroku, Akemi, Moriko, Yuuaa, Kaede, and Tsuki. There was enough space for two of us, and one to squeeze into the corner next to father. That would be mother’s seat. I stood above the place next to my five-year-old brother. While dinner time was usually filled with chatter, tonight was silent. The tension in the room was thick, and uncle had a slightly peeved scent. He probably felt claustrophobic around the cluster of ningen.
I bowed deeply to my uncle,
“Konban wa, Oji-sama. Ogenki desu ka? “
I stood up with my back straight and my eyes casted slightly downward. While I had never seen father use etiquette, mother had made sure that every child in the house knew there manners. Uncle stood and gave a shallow bow,
“Konban wa, oi. Li desu yo; arigato.”
I waited for uncle to sit down first before folding my legs and smiling secretly to myself when uncle seemed pleased.
Ryuumiu slid the door open and stepped into the room, mother following behind her with the slightest look of panic in her eyes. The graceful braid that I twisted her hair into was slightly off-kilter, probably from her scratching at it. Her pungent odor wafted through my nostrils again. By the look of father, her heat had insulted his nostrils too.
“Oi, oji. Mother said you wanted to talk?”
She got straight to the point and sat down beside me without bowing. I glanced at uncle. I couldn’t tell if her new scent or mannerisms disgusted him by the even expression on his face, but the next thing he said sure clarified things,
“Yes. The first thing I would like to discuss is that your propriety is, once again, lacking in all forms. Secondly, priestess,”
His eyes snapped to my mother, who cautiously looked back at him from her standing position beside where his left arm should be. Uncle gestured for her to bend down. I could hear what he whispered, and it took a good amount of restraint not to chortle.
“Go and musk the girl’s undergarments.”
That made mother stand up with a scowl. I knew that her thoughts must have been along the lines of, ‘How dare that arrogant bastard!’ But, she could see the way father and I where casually covering our noses. I sent her a pleading look. Ryuumiu looked between all of us. With a huff, she stalked off to the left room, mother following her. Once the two women were gone, silence took over again. It seemed as if Rin couldn’t take it anymore.
“Sesshomaru-sama, when will you be bringing Rintsuki and Yukiyuu?”
Her smile seemed to be contagious, because the Inu demon’s eyes softened. That was how he smiled. Well, unless he was about to do or say something negative. But, that was a smile you never wanted to witness.
“Rintsuki is busy with his scholastics, and Yukiyuu is adamant about her place at court. It would be a long while before either will journey far from my territory.”
Pft. Good. They could stay there. I didn’t really have a problem with his son, Rintsuki. The few times I had met the boy had been unnerving, though. He was like his father; distant and cold. Sesshomaru actually talked more than Rintsuki, though. And that was creepy. Yukiyuu was a daddy’s girl. Very spoiled. Her uppity-ness was very off-putting.
Rin took the news with a sad smile and sipped her tea,
“I do wish I could see how much they’ve grown.”
While she talked, she rested her hand on her hanyou son’s head. He was a cute little thing. Quite small for his age, but Shippo was apparently the same way at that age. His eyes where brown, his hair a copper color. But the cutest things where his tall and pointed orange ears. They swiveled back and forth at the moment when Rin began rubbing his head.
Mother and Ryuumiu emerged from the room, with a renewed scent. Instead of blood and vaginal fluids, the smell coming off of her was jasmine-infused oil. Much better. She plopped down beside me ungracefully, mother sliding down beside her.
“Alright Oji, now that I smell of a night-walker, spill it.”
She said tactlessly. Such a lady. Yuuaa sniggered and got up, bringing the pot simmering over the fire over to the table. The young human began ladling the leek and potato soup into everybody’s bowls, starting with Sesshomaru. I waited patiently, my stomach doing flip-flops as he held off the question. Yuuaa next served the charred pork, skipping Ryuumiu due to her odd no-animal diet. Once the girl sat back down and everybody began eating, uncle began talking. I didn’t touch my food, keeping my eyes trained on my uncle instead.
“It has come to my attention that your parents have been training you in the ways of battle.”
Uncle said it as if that was his introduction and conclusion to the discussion. He picked up the meat with his chopsticks and slid it into his mouth, chewing exactly fifteen times after he set his chopsticks back down.
“From what I have observed, you both show potential.”
Again he took another bite. Another fifteen chews. I looked at my sister, who was already finished with her soup. She had one elbow on the table, her chin in her palm and her eyes glued to uncle. Oji-sama stared at my sister without speaking. I knocked her elbow off of the table when it was apparent that she wouldn’t be getting the hint anytime soon.
“But, I can take your training further. I have every sort of weapon imaginable in my armory. Not only that, but your knowledge is lacking. Your mother tells me that your grammar and arithmetic are decent, but have never been taken beyond necessity. You will be taught strategy, astronomy, alchemy, and civility,”
Uncle looked pointedly at Ryuumiu, who cocked her eyebrow back at him,
“Among many other things. You may accept my invitation and temporarily inhabit my palace, or you may decline and stay here.”
I let out an even breath. Wow. Of course I would go. This was the chance of a lifetime. To get an education fit for a lord would be amazing. The knowledge I would gain from that would be incredible. I quickly opened my mouth to accept my uncle’s generous offer, but I quickly closed my trap. What would happen to my family while I was away? A quick glance at my glaring father put my mind at ease. They would be fine without me, considering the fact that they were mostly trained killers in some way or another. But, there was no way Ryuumiu would accept. At least, not unless I talked her into it. She was probably thinking that she would be stuffed in a high tower, listening day in and day out to dry scholars.
“Nope. Thanks, though.”
She said with a chipper smile. When she began to excuse herself from the table, I pulled her back down,
“Ryu…”
I started with her nick-name,
“Please consider, I won’t go without you. And you know how much this would mean to me.”
My voice quivered, and I peeked at her from under my white bangs. Her mis-matched eyes softened. I was lying, of course. I loved my sister more than anything, and I would always protect her against any odds. But, realistically, I would have absolutely left without her. What? It’s not like I would have dropped her into a pit of wild boars. Think about your own younger sibling for a moment. If he or she refused to go onto a roller coaster with you, you would probably tell them to stay put and that you would see them in ten minutes. This is the same situation, except I would be leaving her with a house full of capable adults, while you would have left your young sister or brother at the mercy of kidnappers. Shame on you.
“Fine. How long do we stay?”
She said with a sigh. Good. She needed the education.
“Until you are either finished, of age, or your parents demand you back.”
Ryuumiu narrowed her eyes at him. Uh-oh, that could mean that they stayed there for more than a year. She wouldn’t like that.
“How about until I want to come back?”
Uncle shrugged at the proposition.
“Do as you will, I merely offer. It makes no difference to me if you stay or go.”
“Kay. When do we go?”
“Tonight.”
“Kay.”
And with that, Ryuumiu excused herself.
Neither of us carried luggage. No clothes, not even weapons. Apparently, our stuff was inadequate, and we would be using his possessions instead. He almost didn’t let Ryu take Kuritsuki, but he eventually allowed it when she bargained to give him a bath once every two days. We were off when the moon was high. There were many tearful goodbyes, and we promised to write as often as we could.
The flight there was amazing. I rode on uncle’s cloud, and Ryuumiu on Ah-Un. It took only an hour, which was amazing considering how far away he lived. I passed the time by asking uncle questions about anything that popped into my head concerning his lands and house. Ryuumiu was comforting the terrified black brute the whole time, and he had gotten sick upon her lap twice by the time we touched ground outside of the gates of the enormous palace. I couldn't have been happier. Not even Yukiyuu could spoil my time here in this house of opportunity.
