Kouga paced in front of a row of chairs as he waited. Occasional growls would slip out. Kagome’s mother watched him move. He had been at it for two hours. “What is taking so long?” He asked, not really expecting an answer.
“They are just making sure Kagome is stable and cleaning and closing the wound. She’ll probably have an IV or two running. She’ll be fine, Kouga-kun.” She patted the chair beside her. “Why don’t you sit here and tell me why you disguised yourself for so long. I believe I remember you being in Kagome’s elementary class.”
Kouga sighed and did as she asked. Anything was better than not knowing. “After the battle was won and Kagome vanished, I kind of lost touch with everything. Inuyasha came by and gave me Kagome’s old diary. As I read it, I realized, if I could survive, I could see her again and have a second chance.” Kouga ran his hands through his hair as he tried to gather his thoughts.
“I knew I couldn’t interfere with her travels. I also knew I couldn’t reveal myself to her until after the battle.” Kouga turned and looked at Kagome’s mom. “When I saw her the first time as you brought her home from the hospital, I knew I couldn’t wait that long to see her, touch her, talk to her.”
Kouga continued to explain, “I had learned over the years how to change my outer appearance. It’s sort of like a kitsune’s trickery. As soon as Kagome was old enough to go to school, I went as well. Just to be near her again was like heaven.”
Kouga’s hands clenched on his thighs. “Then she was dragged into the well on her fifteenth birthday. I thought the worst I would ever feel was when she had vanished from the battlefield, but it wasn’t. Every time she would vanish through the well, I knew exactly what she was doing, going through.” Kouga stopped speaking.
“You don’t have to continue. I can see how much you care for her. I think I had it very easy. I never knew exactly what was happening. Kagome’s never tells us much about the dangers, just the travels.” The two sighed and lost themselves in their thoughts.
A few minutes later, a doctor came out. Both stood and braced themselves. “Mrs. Higurashi?” At her nod he continued. “Your daughter will be just fine. She should be coming around soon. While the wound is serious, it missed all vital organs. The biggest worry is infection. She had some kind of ash in it that we had to clean up. Any idea how she was injured?”
When Kagome’s mom shook her head the doctor looked over at Kouga. “When you found her, was she conscious or was a weapon laying around?”
“No, sir.”
“Okay. I’ll let you in to see her, but she’ll be here for a few weeks until her stomach muscles heal. Try not to get her excited.” The doctor led them to a private room.
Kagome opened her eyes as she heard them enter. Her mom was smiling down at her with silent tears running down her face. Houjou stood off to one side. He shifted nervously from on foot to the other. “We won, Mom.” Kagome said softly, not wanting to elaborate in front of Houjou.
“Hai. I’m so glad you are all right.” Kagome felt tears well up in her eyes as her mom hugged her. So many people hurt. She had no idea who had lived or died except Kouga. She bit back a sob as she remembered his face before she lost consciousness.
“Mom, how did I get here?” Kagome asked. “The last thing I remember was that I was no where near here.” Her mom nodded and sent a look at Houjou.
He shook his head. Not yet. It was too soon to tell Kagome. “I’ll give you a few minutes.” Kouga said as left the room. His ears easily picked up their conversation.
“Mom, it was awful! People were getting killed left and right! I have no idea who survived. I don’t even know how I got here. We barely defeated him. Mom, how can I find out if they made it?”
Kouga bit his lip as Kagome cried on her mom’s shoulder. Maybe it would be best if he told her, but not today. Today she was too stressed and injured. In a few days…
“The well brought you back, dear. Houjou-kun found you.”
“Houjou-kun found me? I bet he got freaked out. A huge whole in my side isn’t on my grandfather’s disease list.” Kagome laughed weakly earning an answering smile from both Kouga and her mom.
Kouga slid down the wall as his legs gave way with realization. His hands shook slightly. Kagome was alive!!! She was here to stay!
* Three Weeks Later *
Kouga was in the kitchen talking to Kagome’s mom. “When are you going to tell her? She’s running up the phone bill searching the Internet for all things revolving around that battle. She’s almost completely recovered. She needs to know.”
“Needs to know what?” Kagome asked softly as she walked slowly into the kitchen. She smiled at Houjou as he rushed forward to help. He had been over everyday until late at night since the accident. He worried and fretted over her more than her mother did. She watched her mom and Houjou exchange a look. They’d been doing that a lot lately. What did they know that she didn’t?
Houjou sighed and pushed her gently onto a chair. “Kagome-chan, I need to tell you something. Please bear with me until I’m through.” When Kagome nodded, Houjou walked over to his backpack he pulled out two books and walked back to Kagome.
“First, I would like to return this to you.” Houjou handed Kagome her old blue diary. The color was faded and it was falling apart from what seemed to be age. Kagome took it with shaking fingers and opened it. The pages were yellowed and fragile. Not exactly understanding, Kagome looked at Houjou curiously.
Kagome’s mother tiptoed out of the room. This was not meant for others. This was between Kagome and Kouga.
Houjou closed his eyes and relaxed visibly. As he relaxed, his appearance blurred and changed. “Kouga-kun!” Kagome exclaimed! Sobbing, she flung herself upon his neck, hugging him tightly while she cried. She ignored the slight twinge of pain her side gave off from her actions.
A thought hit Kagome hard. “Bastard!” She slapped him as hard as she could. He made no move to block her blow. “All this time, you’ve been you and YOU KNEW, and you didn’t tell me!” Kagome flung herself back on him sobbing. “What happened to everyone? I have to know.”
Sitting down on the floor, Kouga’s arms circled her waist as he cradled her small form in his lap. He rubbed soothing circles over her back while making soothing noises. When she had calmed down, he began.
“After the battle, everyone tended the wounded then buried the dead. Hakkaku and Ginta took care of me for a while. I learned later what happened to Inuyasha’s group. As you know, Naraku killed Kohaku. The houshi and demon slayer survived with minor injuries. You healed both mine and Inuyasha’s wounds.” Kouga paused not really wanting to continue the next part of the story.
“Shippou and Kirara?” Kagome prodded.
“Kirara survived. Shippou, I’m afraid was killed trying to place a large quantity of Miroku’s sutras on Naraku. No one saw it happen. I was pinned and Miroku was fighting hand to hand with an oni. It was only after the dead were being laid to rest we found him. Naraku had pierced him with a large tentacle.” Kagome sobbed into Kouga’s shirt as he rocked them back and forth.
“He was very brave Kagome and died a warrior’s death. He could have no higher honor.” Kouga tried to soothe her with words but she just sobbed harder. He rocked back and forth as she cried over the loss of her friends.
As Kagome calmed, a thought hit her. “Kouga-kun, what happened to the Shikon no Tama?”
Kouga grinned. “I had a feeling you would ask that. Dog-turd has it.” He watched as Kagome face brightened.
“Inuyasha’s still alive? I thought there weren’t any demons in the area.” Kagome paused and glared slightly at the wolf holding her. “All this time, and you never said anything…”
“Well, technically, Inuyasha isn’t here, here. He’s over in the States.” Kouga smiled as Kagome stared at him like he’d grown another head. “What now?”
“You don’t look like you’ve aged a day. I always knew demons aged slowly, but this…” Kagome shook her head in amazement. “This IS your real form isn’t it?” Kagome slowly stroked her hands over Kouga’s face.
“Hai. This is the real me. Inuyasha, on the other hand, having human blood, hasn’t fared so well. He looks to be around forty years old or there abouts.”
“Really? Mom better look out.” Kagome giggled. Kouga smiled. Kagome snuggled closer to the demon. “Mmmm. This feels nice.”
“Hai.” Kouga replied softly as Kagome’s breathing slowed and evened out. She was almost completely healed but she still slept a lot. It was partially from the pain medication and partially from the healing process.
Kouga sighed and gently shifted Kagome’s weight so he could carry her to her room. She mumbled something unintelligible and cuddled closer in his neck. He passed Mrs. Higurashi in the hall.
“Why don’t you take a nap as well, dear? Dinner won’t be ready for another couple of hours or so and you look a little peaked.” Kouga smiled at her as he continued to the stairs. That didn’t sound like a bad idea.
Kouga gently laid Kagome on her bed. Unable to resist, he stretched out behind her cuddling her close. He slowly inhaled her delicate scent, savoring it. After placing a gentle kiss on her cheek, he snuggled his face into the nape of her neck and drifted off to sleep.
Kagome turned over in her sleep slightly waking Kouga, but once he realized it was Kagome moving in her sleep, he allowed himself to relax and go back to sleep. Kouga smiled in his sleep as Kagome snuggled closer to him, his arms tightened on her waist.
A few hours later Kagome slowly swam into consciousness. She hadn’t felt so safe and warm in a long time. Kagome shifted her face slightly as her nose itched. She smelled Houjou, no Kouga’s masculine scent. Her eyes flew open.
Kagome stared as she mentally took stock of what body part was where. Her face was resting in the crook of Kouga’s neck. His hair was tickling her nose. Kouga’s arms were wrapped securely around her waist. Kagome had one arm under Kouga’s head and the other draped over his waist but under the arm he had wrapped around hers. One of her legs was sandwiched between his the other was draped familiarly over his hip.
Kagome could feel a blush forming. Should she wake Kouga or try to sneak away? Kagome pulled her head back to see his face. Her blush faded as she stared. Asleep, he looked not innocent, but more vulnerable. She sighed softly as she traced his bottom lip with her thumb.
Something alerted her to Kouga waking up. Her eyes drifted up to meet his. His blue eyes were still soft from sleep. “Kouga-kun?”
“Hai?” Kouga’s voice was low and husky still holding that last bit of sleep.
“Why did you pretend to be Houjou all these years?” Kagome watched as the last bit of sleep left his eyes.
“To be near you.” Kouga answered honestly.
“Oh. Well, I guess that explains why you never gave up on me as Houjou. You are the only guy I knew that put up with constantly getting stood up and the rejections.” Kagome blushed as she realized just what she’d put him through.
Kouga smiled. “It’s okay. I always knew exactly where you were. Besides, your grandfather is very entertaining.”
“Oh, you…” Kagome began and stopped. Kouga had a gleam in his eye and it was reminding her of the kiss he’d given her just under a month ago.
Both leaned forward and froze as Kagome’s mother called them to dinner. Kagome sighed and Kouga smiled wryly. He had waited this long. What were a few more hours?
