Sesshomaru did not sleep that night. He sat in one of the high back chairs that faced the fire in his room. His legs were crossed with an arm lazily draped over his lap. He did not move. To an on looker he would have appeared to be a life size doll sitting in pristine beauty.
His mind restlessly replayed the night’s activities not allowing him any peace in the silence of his chambers. The scent of their sex still coated the air making his demon purr in smug satisfaction. He had mated his female throughly leaving him feeling physically relaxed.
He had learned tonight that things weren’t as he would like them to be. He was a great demon far above the inferior mortals. However, one tiny female had distorted this image of himself. He knew that she laid in some hidden grey area between his idea of himself and his human loving father. It was a place that he did not want to exist but as much as he tried to deny or conceal it, it remained the truth nonetheless.
That human was special.
He cared for her. He wanted to protect her. He needed her by his side. The most painfully obvious element to him now was that he lusted after her. Tonight she had raised a fire in him that he hadn’t felt with the most experienced of demoness. Her small frame called for his touch like nothing he had ever known before. Ignoring its presence had not worked and neither had seeing to his own pleasure. The dam had broken tonight. He took what was his to take and he would take it again. He knew he could not stop himself now from devouring what he had just learned the flavor of. The innocent cries from her throat and the constricting feel of her passage was something he had to experience again.
The question that remained was how attached he would allow his ward to become. Where would she fall in the rank of his life? He could easily dismiss her position as human mistress. It would be the most appropriate solution as she was not fit to be his life mate.
Although the traditional face of a human mistress was not a pleasant one. The women he had seen in such places before were more akin to whores than lovers. Some Lord’s fancied trading their women or having them perform in some way at public gatherings. They would dress in matching outfits and sit at the feet of their masters during dinners and grievance hearings. It showed a demon lord’s power and dominance over his lands.
It was not a behavior fitting of an Inu Lord. He did not need such tricks to make lesser demons believe in his strength. His own skills could attest to his power as it always had. The great Lord Sesshomaru did not need the abuse of a human female to represent his rule. Besides he would not permit the use of Rin’s body by another. It was his solely. The girl’s sweet innocence would not survive such treatment either. No if she became his human mistress it would not, could not be in the traditional manner. However, like humans lords appearances did count for something in his court. Exception to such traditions usually called the Lord into question. His father had openly loved his human and was continually challenged for his lands because of it. To love a human suggested weakness.
He was usually not one to care for appearances but continual challenges to his power could easily become an annoyance.
His inner demon grumbled in agreement. His reputation should help disway some of that and any who were foolish enough to try anyway would be dealt with promptly. It would be worth the slight annoyance to have the pleasure of a woman again.
The morning came and with it the warm pinkish sun pushing it way up the sky. Rin woke when the first rays reached her. She yawned soundlessly and turned toward the door to her chambers. It had been awhile since she had slept on a futon and getting up right away didn’t seem all that appealing. She stretched her arms over her head and sagged back into the comfortable warmth of her bed trying to delay the inevitable. She wondered if she would see her Master today. He had a habit of keeping to himself when he was home especially on the first day back. He always had some important work to do.
Rin sighed and willed herself to get up. She dressed for the day running her fingers through the full body of her black hair.
She was never much for taking care of her hair especially when she was younger. She couldn’t remember when she decided to take out the childish side ponytail that she used to sport but it must have been after one of Jaken rants on how she should be behaving. He had threatened at one point in her youth to shave it all off if she let it go wild beyond repair. Rin wouldn’t have cared if she wasn’t trying to be more like her Lord with his own long mane. Rin knew that most of Jaken’s scathing lectures where prompted by Sesshomaru but he took great pleasure in having a position of charge small as it was. Her hair felt smooth and silky today. Mostly because of the care that her Master had shown it the night before. She smoothed it down with her fingers and wrapped herself in a simple kimono that was easy to move in. She slide the door open and went to go find food. Another perk of being at Lord Sesshomaru’s estate was that she didn’t have to go foraging for her meals. It was a task she was accustomed to and secretly enjoyed but the food here was tastier.
The familiarity of the morning made it easy to keep her mind clear of her troubles. She smiled and greeted the servants like always with her overly excited attitude. They talked with her asked her about her most recent journey with the Master. They were nice demons who were extremely loyal to the Lord of the West. They were often very eager to hear of his adventures enough so that they didn’t mind hearing it from a human.
Rin’s existence was a heavily guarded palace secret. Only a few of the servants knew of her and even less were permitted to speak with her. She found some companionship in the kitchen staff as they provided a very important basic need for her. The demon that cleaned her room was one she had never met along with the grounds keeper though she enjoyed their work. She had brief dealings with the stable hands as she liked to visit Ah-Un and for a time Lord Sesshomaru had seen to a private tutor.
As a girl she had been taught to keep to certain walk ways as they were only travelled by those in Sesshomaru’s inner circle. It would not due for the Master’s affinity for the girl child to get out to the courtiers. The need for the secrecy had lessened with her aging but habits were something that Rin would not change.
“So, no really trouble this time around love?” the cook asked while preparing the castle morning meal. She was an aging bird demon who had a mostly human form. Her most demonic feature being a beautiful set of blue wings that Rin used to love to touch when she was little. She kept Rin company when she was home and felt like another mother to her next to Lady Kaede.
“Nothing really special happened. Sure we ran into a few demons but they were no match for Lord Sesshomaru.” Rin said the last part of the sentence feeling like a certain toad demon she knew.
“Ah, nothing like the stories you used to tell me when the Master was getting involved with Naraku.”
“I’ll say,” Rin sighed, “It feels so long ago to me now but at the same time it doesn’t.”
“Well you humans do live rather short lives so I guess it would seem that way,” the cook spoke with Rin with her back turned focusing on her work. The bird demon was busy chopping some kind of vegetable while Rin had plopped down at the ancient woodend countier that ran along the rim of the kitchen. She sat on a tripod stool that used to be quite the challenge to climb up on when she was little.
Rin eyed the beautiful royal blue feathers as she spoke resting her chin on her hand, “But so much has happened.”
“Like what dear?” her voice did not chance and she did not turn to look at her but Rin noticed that her hand had stopped moving and she seemed to be listening more closely.
Rin stopped herself from answering right away. She knew that there had to be some gossip going around the castle about her and the Master. They hadn’t exactly tried to hide what they did but Rin knew that her Lord wouldn’t want the whole serving staff to know the details of his private life. He barely told them when he was planning on leaving the manor for an extended time.
“Like Lord Sesshomaru…” Rin answered simply in a way that said everything and nothing. She sighed to herself softly. Last night had been both wonderful and wonderfully terrifying. She was not so dense as to not understand what the change ment for her. Rin knew a decision had to be made by her Lord as to how he would handle her from now on. It scared her and excited her with the possibilities. She got what she wanted most; the attention of her Master. At what price she did not yet know. Lord Sesshomaru made it clear in the hot spring what his intentions for the future where. His promise made her feel tingly in all the right places. She had won her Lord physically but could she gain his heart as well as his desires?
The old bird demon gently rested her knife on the cutting board and her shoulders slumped with her own sigh. “You’d be right child. Well I guess you’re really not a child but…”
Rin found herself biting her lip. They did know. If the matronly cook knew than she must have gained the information from a loose lipped bath attendent or whomever Sesshomaru went to when he left his room. The cook turned around for the first time. The dark eyes of a bird focused on her making Rin reposition herself in her seat. “How do you feel about this Rin?”
The question caught her off guard but it shouldn’t have. She had been asking herself the same question all morning. “I..um...well it’s Lord Sessho…”
“No child. I did not ask you what he thinks or what he wants. He already got what he wanted. I am asking about you,” the cook spoke calmly the reprimand was there.
“But I care about what my Lord wants. What he thinks and…” Rin blushed softly. She cared about what he desired and lusted for.
“Yes you do or you would not be here. You have still avoided my question.”
“I am happy that I am useful to…”
The demon’s eyes narrowed and Rin was silenced. She had never seen the cook angry but she had a feeling she was close to it now. “Rin this is not like when you were a girl. You were useful when you were little and would help me sweep the kitchen and when you give the Master company on his journeys. This is different, love. He does not own you. You are not his sword which is useful in battle you are a young woman and good men do not use you.”
Rin nodded her head. “Lord Sesshomaru is a good man and a great Lord. I understand what you are saying but my feelings are still the same. I am happy that he wants me. I can not believe that he would see me in a manner that I have seen him in for so long. It’s like a dream come true.”
“You can have sex without being in love.”
“I know that too!” Rin said with a little more firmness than she usually used. “I know what is happening. I am in the center of it. I want his love. I may not get it but I will take what I can get from him.”
The bird demon shook her head and turned back to her cutting. “That is your choice, love. I just hope the Lord doesn’t hurt you in the process.” She was never very good at keeping her opinions silent which is why the kitchen was a good place for her to work. She never had to see the Lord and never had to hold her tongue because of it. The child was to good natured to realise that she spoke out of turn but her heart was in the right place. The servants quarter had been buzzing last night. One of the young maids had been asked to fetch the human girls bathing supplies and another was told to heat towels. The bath attendant had viewed the Master carrying the naked girl to the hot springs. It was enough to have the help gossiping for years.
They had said the Master had finally revealed the true purpose of having the whelp around. It pleased a lot of the human hating demons who had grown concerned that the son was truly like his father despite his posturing. Other’s still took perverse pleasure in imagining what kind of twisted acts he would have the human perform and they hoped they would get a chance to watch.
The ones who knew better, the demons who had been allowed to get know Rin found themselves with other thoughts. They had witness the care that the Lord possessed for the girl. They knew it existed because it would take nothing less for the girl to be living with the Master. They found themselves hoping that Lord Sesshomaru did not let his pride blind him to the feelings they could clearly see. Rin was important to him and with last night he had shown that his affection for her was no longer fatherly. The cook hoped dearly that the Lord would act on his feeling and make the human girl his mate and the Lady of the house. She deserved it and they both deserved the happiness they could give each other. The cook's optimism though was slight. The Master was likely to use her for his pleasure and deny everything else.
Rin nodded in silent agreement. She hoped for that too. She rose from her seat in the kitchen while excussing herself. She decided she would find some wild fruit growing outside for her breakfast this morning and maybe she would visit Ah-Un. The pack dragon liked her and was always pleasant to visit. He couldn’t ask questions either.
The Master of the keep kept to his usual routine. That is to make it seem like he didn’t have one at all. It would not due for the Lord of the West to become predictable. It would be a weakness leaving him open for attacks. Instead he wandered the grounds of his estate. Listening to the chatter of his servants and courtiers. The daiyoukai silent movements and purposely repressed aura allowed him to go virtually unseen. This morning he walked the border of his property to check on the demons he employed for security.
The news of his arrival home had most likely not travelled to the far most corners of the keep allowing him a good perspective of the behavior of his underlings when he is away. He was mostly pleased with their vigilance only noting a few mistakes he would report to the Master Gatekeeper. He was a capable inu youkai who had held the position since the time of his father. The man was trusted and could correct the inexperienced footsoldiers.
Although the task seemed tedious Sesshomaru like walking the perimeter. It was one of the only enjoyable duties he had while in the keep. Being the head of the court was his birthright and he took pride in his position of leadership. The court itself was a place he like to avoid most. The sniveling of the entitled demons that held minor stations of power within the court made it a place of hell for him. They did nothing to earn their place and did everything to avoid their duties. The court was meant to protect the demons in the Western Lands who followed the laws. Sesshomaru preferred to enforce his rule at the source rather than talk about methods of enforcement. There was always to much talking and not enough doing hence the frequent trips through the West.
He could leave the paperwork to a trusted adviser and focus what he was good at. He had the instincts of a predator and a protector. His demon did not enjoy long days in grievance court. It wished to be moving and active. Sesshomaru’s morning walks helped ease the disquite he felt while here.
Sesshomaru stopped. The Kappa was coming.
“Lord Sesshomaru!” Jaken’s squeaky voice called out from some distance back. The imp demon always seemed to draw out the syllables of his name as if he wish he could say it longer. He had hoped it would take the toad longer to find him this morning. He usually arrived to remind him of the day’s itinerary. The stupid thing never realised that it was being avoided on purpose.
The tiny legs of the demon finally caught up with him and Sesshomaru continued to walk without looking back.
“My Lord you are expected in the viewing chambers this morning.” Jaken said with a bow. Sesshomaru’s eye twitch slightly. The kappa was in his element at court. If he had it his way they would never leave. The political intrigue was something he thrived on. If it wasn’t for his insistent loyalty and pride as Sesshomaru’s right hand. The little demon would be the perfect choice to leave behind in the castle for Sesshomaru more tedious duties.
“I am aware Jaken.”
“The fox demons are here today to settle the dispute they have with the raccoons over hunting ground and the…” the rest of Jaken’s report was tuned out more out of habit than anything else. Today would be a long day.
