Short History
The Emperor was more like an embodiment of divine harmony than the head of an actual governing administration,though the final say belonged to the emperor..the court with the administrators ,officials and ministers would press and sometimes influence matters to the emperors attention regarding the nation or the imperial family.
The emperor sometimes was force to make decisions even he didnt agree with in order to uphold the standards or expectation of the imperial family.
A royal decree is a decision made by the emperor it cannot be revoked once read. A concubines offspring (as long as it is a male) can become a future emperor as long as the father was apart of the emperors imperial lineageThere are no female emperors.
If an emperor dies and his successor is too young to rule..the empress will be namedDowager (a woman who holds title,authority or property from her deceased husband, usually the widow of a king or emperor.) The Dowager has authority over the court until her son is of ruling age.. they educate their sons as soon as they learn to read however im not certain at what age they actually rule.

Kagome yawned slightly as she rose slowly from the futons comfort. She had awaken at the sound of a loud rappa echoing within the palace walls. It had awakened her into a stupor and caused the onna to fumble upon the tatami straw mat below her low futon."Whats going on" she mumbled sleepily Whose here?
"Young misstress is awake!” The young rabbit youkai maid exclaimed as she quickly ran towards the human onna.
"Hello young mistress I am your maid for the moment dispatched by Kaede sempai I am here to attend to your every need." she said cheerfully.
"Maid"? Kagome stated with confusion. Oh yes the attendant did mention something about a maid before his departure.
"Konnichiwa" Kagome suddenly exclaimed happily."I am Kagome Higurashi please do not be so formal with me". The onna was releived to meet someone with ethusiasm. The palace had seemed so tense, everyone was well...so formal.
"Oh no young misstress I am but a palace maid ,I may only addresss you as young misstress ",the maid responded respectfully."Quickly we must get you ready. The Emperor will ascend his throne shortly, he seeks an audiece with all the prospects. Today is the day he will bestow his task! Hurry we cannot be idle."she urged tugging the reluctant human along towards the bath house.
"Task"! Kagome said frantically "What task please. Are you able to explain? I mean ,I wasnt even briefed court lady sango didnt mention anything about this." She cried nervously.
"The task I am not aware of however noone was breifed on this matter.The emperor is wise and speaks in many proverbs and riddles I am certain his assement may fall somewhere along this area" The rabbit maid said as she rushed Kagome towards the private bathe house. "Quick my lady theres no time to explain Buddha will guide you if it is your fate."
"My fate?Oh yes everything here is about fate isnt it ", Kagome replied sarcastically. She had high hopes for the rabbit maid---where disclosure of information was concerned in particular. She wanted to form some sort of friendship but the servant was formal and frank about her duties.

There was alot she needed to know before hand, she did not know whom she could confide in at the moment. Quickly removing her sleeping attire she allowed the maid to scrub her vigorously while she pondered on the days events.
Kami -sama are you truly sincere about my fate ?

"All Kneel---" The crowd amongst them responded at the command
"All Bow---" Once again bowing they awaited the entrance of the royals that would soon descend from the elegant staircase
The attendant Bankutso announced the command loudly for the third time as the sound of the rappa echoed throughout the grand hall. The audience stationed at their respectful seat bowed lowly , their head slightly touching the crystal floor.
The emperor ,empress and princes made their down the golden stair case gracefully. Each member of the court was present ,officials, important people of the magistrate ,concubines,court ladies,eunuchs and palace servants kneeled respectfuly at their stations.
The emperor turned towards the crowd that awaited his command silently he was dressed majestically. A thick long golden robe adorned his tall muscular physique, silver silk trimmings detailed each design that was displayed on the back of his kimono , while leather gold plated armed boots protruded at the bottom of his feet .His cheeks bore a single jagged blue streak on each corner ,his nose was acute and pointed,his voice was deep and rasphy--his eyes slanted and sharp but warm and golden-- a trait he shared with youngest son Inuyasha.
The Daiyoukai's silver hair was neatly pinned into a high tea whisk bun with a small golden crown ,his white fur pelt parted and flowed behind him as he turned.The emperors appearance was entirely masculine he shared that common trait with his eldest son Sesshomaru--whose very presence commanded reverence.
"Rise my faithful subjects." his baritone voice commanded echoing deeply throughout the crowded area.
"We are assembled here today to witness another act of filial obligation towards the Imperial Taisho Dynasty and the Edo nation.As cutomary it is the duty of each aristocrat and in some cases common families to enroll their daughters in the harem 's audition"He said as his eyes scanned the audience sharply. "This audition is held every decade in order to safe guard the Taisho Dynasty and lineage. If choosen I will bestow unto each prospect a jade pendant with an honourable meaning. The assessment today will be hosted by the Empress".Touga breifly acknowledged his mate with a slight smile. "However the assignment is something Ive decided to contribute myself."
The audience began to whisper amongst each other silently--it was the first time the emperor had gotten involved in the activities of the harems
"What" Kikyo said astonished as she poured sake into 2nd prince's jaded cup."Since when does the emperor get involved in Kimiko- samas harem ambitions.He certainly was not this interested when I was choosen for the harem--Inuyasha what exactly did Queen mother tell him?" Kikyo was curious to know--not that it would put a dent on her present reputation ---however the emperor seldomnly intervened in matters that werent necessary. She didnt understand his contributuion here.
"Feh"--! he snorted responding loudly."How am I suppouse to know. I barely get to seek an audience with father as is and Im not exactly salt on rice with Sesshomarus mother" Inyuasha responded irritabily. The hanyou was not excited to be present at the harems auditioning. He would not benefit from the pickings this year so he saw no point in observing.
"Inuyasha " Sesshomaru abruptly replied smoothly his tone had taken on a sharp yet warning sound. None would offend his mother---none other than him ofcourse  . Cocking his head slightly he acknowledged his half brother. He had been observing the audience before the half breeds wench interrupted his sutiny.
"If you truly have any regard for your own life I would suggest that you speak only well of mother. Addressing the human concubine breifly he continued
"As for your query wench ,father has better things to do than attend your ceremonies". he retorted dryly before eyeing his father curiously
The same question the wench aroused was also one he had been pondering of at the moment
Kikyo closed her mouth slowly,she had been on the verge of retorting however she had recollected her stance where he was concerned. It was true the Crown Prince held the most authority and was feared and respected greatly within the court and Imperial family.He was not one she would desire to get into an acaltercation with ,though it was not someone she wished to bow either.
You just wait Sesshomaru. I no longer will remain just a concubine after the emperor finds out im with child.. I will help Inuyasha ascend the throne and once he does... you will pay for your vile remarks. Kikyo thought evily . Fanning the hanyou slightly with a bamboo fan she   redirected her attention ahead
Sesshomaru took a sip of his sake as he eyed his father intently. Father you are an occuppied man why waste time assessing the concubines audition ? Can it be that some of the prospects may actually be outstanding this year ? Snorting silently he placed the cup of sake he held within his hands on the crystal tray before rising to depart.
"Unlikely" he muttered . The crown prince was not one to follow through with trivial ceremonies, unlike his father tolerance was not something he was granted with by the Kamis. Dissapointed at the lack of intrigue Sesshomaru left his appointed seat next to the halfbreed.
He made his way towards the eastern side entrance-- he preferred to spend the time doing something more productive with his time
"Where did he go Touga he never follows proper decorum,how can I dote on him in the future "? Kimiko whined softly as she noticed her son's dissappearance .
"Fret not, indeed Sesshomaru does take many liberties--but so does his okaasan." Touga said eyeing Kimiko curiously. He was aware that she had a part to play where Sesshomarus discouragement on the ceremonies were concerned. The empress had urged his son to contribute to the ceremony previously--certainly she was up to no good.
The son of a frog is a frog. Touga mused silently before calling upon Jaken the imp servant."Jaken Retreive the Crown Prince immediately " his bartione voice rattled deeply. Flicking his claw in dimissal he observed the servants bow as he squabbled about uncremoniously.
"Hai your majesty." Jaken stuttered as he ran towards the exit of the grand hall.

"Young mistress ,are you ready for the assesment?" Court lady Sango called softly.
"Hai" Kagome replied nervously. She stood at the corner of the the grand hall alongside the other prospects .She wore a silk violet plumrose patterned kimono . It was fitted and held a silver triming along the sleeves, with a deep red obi .
Her midnight hair was thick and shiny ,it was intricately braided neatly on top of her head with silver and purple accessories.The deep violet shade of her attire contrasted perfectly against her healthy ivory skin.
Her lips was painted in the deepest of red ,her lids lined neatly with black and purple Kohl .Her blue eyes shined with determination, she stood out amongst the youkai prospects. Though human ---if it were not for her scent ---from a distance one could hardly tell
"Mistress Suki ,Ayame--sister of Imperial guard ---Suki Koga-sama and Mistress Higurashi Kagome-- daughter of Merchant Higurashi Shin-, please pay your respects to the emperor!" Bankutso the attendant called out loudly as he closed golden scroll.
Kagome along with the wolf youkai Ayame walked towards the Palace center and faced the emperor graciously. In union together they bowed and chanted;--
"We pay our respect to Tenno,Taisho
Joo Taisho, Kō taishi , and Dai niōji
May peace,fortune and good health come to you
An ignorant woman is a virtuous one"
"Higurashi Kagome ,it was said that you are well verse in literature.If a commoner can educate his children then surely Pigs can fly." the emperor bellowed humourously.
He did intent to insult the onna in fact he had admired her breifly as she stepped forward to do her introduction. He hoped however that his empress was indeed correct where her intelligence was concern. If it was lacking it truly would be a dissapointment.
"Today I will test this theory. Can you recite me an original Tanka" Touga said as he eyed the woman before him in curiousity.
"Ta-Tanka" she whispered nervously.Kagome raised her head and gazed at the handsome youkai anxiously. she could recite him a proverb, or expand on any Shinto idiom. Something she already rehearsed or was aware of however at this precise moment she would need some form of inspiration or at least some timeframe to create something new.
Peering around the room for any source of creativity Kagome heart thrummed loudly. She was not certain of the outcome but backing down now was not an option
"Hai.. your majesty".
