Did he send me away to protect me? Does Naraku love me? A sudden pain ran into Annabelle's core and it was visceral. She wanted so much to believe in such hypothesis, but so many times the lass got hurt when trying to see any goodness inside the hanyo... What could she do to get rid of the pain, how could she run from it?
"Mistress Anaberu..." Kohaku's sweet and innocent voice sounded near.
Anna raised her gaze, biting her lips to restrain the violent emotions, and saw him coming closer, his eyes showing how worried he was about her. Over there, the woman thinking of a way of running from her ghosts, had to face someone who looked like a sleepwalker for having no memories of his life. What the absence of his own pain has already caused to Kohaku? He was there, and wasn't. And, yes, Anna was aware that a side of the boy wished to not remember the past, therefore he became an easy prey. Even having the opportunity to be alongside his sister, a part of Kohaku apparently chose going back to the Spider's web. To be free of making choices, having self-consciousness about consequences leaded by the followed path can be a crushing burden and how she understood that! For Annabelle herself has chosen to surrender to the Spider as well.
So, the foreigner lass closed her eyes and breathed out. Kohaku knelt in front of her, in an attempt to comprehend what she might be feeling and suddenly he received a tender hug from the woman. His cheeks vividly blushed. The embrace lasted for some minutes, her hands smoothed the boy's back, intending to comfort him and the gentle, fraternal caress induced brownish eyes to close. Finally, Belle released the hug and stroked his bangs. She was discretely smiling, a lesson has been learned subtly, a new true has been unveiled, perhaps.
"The pain..." Anna sighed "is terrible, yet necessary. Pain might be cruel, but it makes us feel alive, it makes us feel that we have a purpose. As worse as it seems, do not run from pain, do not run from your past, Kohaku." She touched his cheek while speaking such words not only to the kid, but to her very self. It was not only from Kagewaki's remembrance that Annabelle was running till certain time, neither from desiring Naraku. Annabelle also ran from her pain when she travelled away from Europe, where the first losses fell over her heart as did the first treasons. This must be ended at last, the young ginger lass chose to embrace her own past, so she decided to reveal something to the boy ahead: "I lost my father too, Kohaku. I may have not killed him with my own hands, but I could have saved him with my gift. Yet I was scared, for he already has made me promise to avoid using this power, and I feared I would fail, I didn't even try".
"What are you trying to tell me, mistress?" He touched her shoulders. Annabelle's sight seemed focused on a spot beyond reaching, far away.
"My father died when I was thirteen years old, my stepmother was aware of this inherited family gift and tried to convince me to turn him back to life, but I even hadn't the courage to try and for this reason, my sister came to despise me..." She dove into that memento, till then fragmented inside her head. That was the day when Ailyn decided to join Amelie's coven. It was all my fault, I feel so sorry, Lynnie... and so Anna recalled the horse falling over Kagewaki's leg and she almost behaved so cowardly as when her father passed, yet luckily she was older and more self-confident to make a move and save the Young Master. I should have found this courage before, even knowing the possible consequences...
"I'm very sorry for you mistress, but I think you shouldn't blame yourself" the boy's soft voice brought her back to the present. "I think the mistress did what your father wanted you to do, for he was the one who asked mistress to avoid using your powers".
"Thank you Kohaku..." She sighed again. "You too shouldn't blame yourself for anything, anything at all. Understood?" Her hands held his.
"But... I have no idea of what you are talking about, mistress" his eyes blinked, confused, and he blushed again.
"Just let yourself remember, that's all I ask" and she stood up for once.
A poisonous demon wasp got near from them and flew over the boy's shoulder. Soon, a blowing wind passed around both. Kagura showed up between the trees, her big feather landed and she stepped on the grass.
"Kagura..." Annabelle smiled and waved one hand.
"Naraku told me to fetch Kohaku" although her voice sounded harsh, the scarlet eyes gleamed friendly to the female human.
"How have you been?" Anna went to the demoness who was standing still.
"Same as always" the Wind Sorceress answered directly, without sharing any detail. Anna noticed that she wouldn't reveal much, probably because of that annoying Saimyosho buzzing around, watching them.
"Before you leave, can I ask a question?" the ginger lass said.
"Be quick about it" Kagura retorted impatiently.
"What happened with..." she would say 'heart', but retreated. "With the strange man who seemed to be a Naraku's incarnation?"
"So you met Muso..." The demoness commented "Naraku absorbed him back" she looked quite tormented because of the occurrence.
"I see..." Belle couldn't conceal a certain relief, which her friend wasn't able to understand, however no question was made about it. He will be fine then. A small smile adorned her visage. Anna got her bag and slowly walked away from the demoness and the boy. From the distance, she waved a hand again. "Kohaku, please think about the things I told you. Kagura, I hope you will be fine". After that, the two Naraku's vassals jumped in the feather and left, flying into one direction while Annabelle walked towards another, not even imagining where that path would lead her.
She wandered through hours and beyond, till finding a village too quiet to be inhabited. While entering there, Anna saw some abandoned houses, most of them were destroyed and there was a smoky scent which made her believe that a fire has been spread all over that place. The lass sat over the stairs on a bigger building's entrance, it was in a better condition than the rest. Settled, she opened the map to analyze it again, and noticed that the trees around her had similar shapes and heights to the ones painted on the paper. This village must be the one in the drawing. Anna deducted. If that was the case, her journey would be dangerous, after all, there were many other villages and she would have to cross each one.
It will be tough, she thought while recalling how people used to be hostile, believing she was a yokai. What could she do? While pondering something, the Scottish lass entered the house to examine what it has left inside, and exploring the place she ended up finding a plenty bows with rice powder, colorful inks, also fabric's remains and another types of trinkets. So, she had an idea.
Anna dropped her dresses from the bag on the floor, then compared them to the pieces of cloth and some abandoned old kimono spread in the room of what seemed to be a tea house or something. After, she snooped into some furnitures' drawers till find needles and threads. The night would be long.
In the rising of a new day, Annabelle got off the big house, dressing a new outfit that was a mix of western and japanese cultures. It was a white kimono in which she has embroidered light-blue and silver arabesques all over the upper part, descending by the long sleeves, tightening her waist there was a turquoise corset instead of an obi, and on hakama's place Anna was wearing a skirt loosened enough to ease the mobility of her legs, also adorned by same embroideries as the rest of the garment. Her face, white as the moon with powder, made the foreigner look even more exotic. Eyelids were painted in blue, under the left eye she drew another arabesque with the same ink. Most of her flaming curls were loosened, except for a lock which the lass had tied with a tiny silvery clip. At last, the lonely woman stared her own hands still stained in white and talked to someone in her thoughts:
Father, I know I've promised to conceal this gift so I could live an ordinary life and be safe, but I'll have to break my vow one more time, forgive me. I know I should have broken this promise long ago, when you needed me the most. Belle covered her head with a transparent shroud, such whiteness contrasted with the dryness of the fields she passed by. Desert was in the path, as shown in the map. Many dead thin trees were painted in the paper, till at some point nature would thrive generously again.
Ironically though, all that precariousness would be of great help. It didn't take long for Annabelle arrive in the first village and be approached by some men holding swords and torches, ready for a combat.
"A yokai!" They screamed.
"Fear not" She removed the shroud, revealing her face. "My name is Shinrinko and I am a yokai who works for humans' benefit".
The bunch of villagers were a bit old and looked tired, they gazed at her confusedly, still suspicious. Some old women and some children were observing, hidden behind windows and doors of humble cabins, everyone remained quiet for an instant, till one man bravely spoke: "Don't you believe in her, she will curse us all!".
Annabelle leaned down, touching her hands on the demised soil. Soon a little white flower bloomed and the eyes around her widened, shocked while watching such tiny miracle.
"Your land, disgraced by so many wars, I can make it fertile again. All I ask in exchange is a place to spend the night, and a bowl of food". She politely suggested.
They buzzed between themselves, some against and others agreeing with Anna's offer. However, the indecision didn't last more than five minutes, for the people from that village, so as from many more which followed, were so mistreated by the lack of supplies that a little demonstration of Annabelle's gift was enough to make them surrender to her promise. So, the owner of the flaming curls would sink her palms in the earth, singing Gaelic chants and then plantations would resume to give fruits and be filled with vegetables again. This way Anna has traced her path to a new home, far from everybody she has knew since first stepping on japanese soil, yet this time it wasn't an escape though, but an attempt to rebuild her happiness, although deep inside knowing her heart wasn't completely free, for there was still that infimum Shikon's shard pulsing into her chest.
Meanwhile, between Naraku and his enemies the war endured, more arduous and irreversible with the passing time.
At least you have found your way now, Annabelle... He thought, looking at the lass' reflection through Kanna's mirror. His lips discretely retorted, restraining his will to lurk around her, and with his heart back where it belonged, it seemed even harder to hold the impulse of chasing after her, yet the choice has been his, he was the one who has sent her away, so he needed to learn to let her go. His own path was trailed, and it was dark, deadly, wasn't his intention to drag her with him into that abyss. Not anymore.
The jewel, almost full rounded was twinkling in his palm, and Naraku knew if he was intending to live enough to complete the gem, he might obtain even more power. So, the forms inside the circular mirror changed and the image of the owner of his thoughts was replaced by the reflection of an imponent gorgeous daiyokai.
"Sesshomaru..." The name slipped from his lips while scarlet eyes were fixated on a human child happily jumping around, next to the Lord of the Western Lands. A wicked smirk reaped his face and the pearl under his fingers shone.

Kikyo, after wandering for so long, stepped by a village once devasted by battles. Many houses were shattered, roofs had burned marks, pieces of wood were spread over the sand, wounded men were laying over straw tatami in the middle of the yard, being treated by their wives whom were doing all they could to give them some comfort, yet the moans from the injured sounded loud, synchronized with the howling winds.
"A priestess!" A little boy announced, hope gleaming in his eyes and big smile as he saw the woman crossing a dusty mist.
"Please," an elder woman came closer and threw herself on knees before the miko, "help our men! We have been attacked by bandits, they took the little valuable things we had and burned the rest!" Her voice trembled, muffled in the middle of her throat, and then she covered her mouth with both hands.
"Don't worry, I am here to take care of the wounded ones" Kikyo serenely spoke, then analyzed the agonizing men. Between painful moans, one of them said:
"If only Shinrinko has been nearby..."
"Shinrinko?" the priestess blinked, turning her attention to him.
"The yokai of the woods..." the same boy who received her came to her side, kneeling along the miko beside the suffering countryman. "They say she has done many kindnesses in some villages. Wherever she passes by, grass turns to grow and trees to flourish".
"Interesting..." Kikyo's eyes narrowed. "I have never heard about her, what does she look like?"
"There are tales telling this yokai's hair resembles fire, and her eyes looks like crystal clear waters" the elder woman sat next to them.
"And, with a simple gaze, she drives malicious yokai off" the man Kikyo was nursing added.
Hair like fire, watery eyes... the miko pondered, then smiled tranquilized. It must be her. In the end, I think I did a good job, she sighed in relieve, and helped her to meet her destiny.
To be continued.
