The three of them walked through a trail and soon were in front of the flowery village's entrance. While crossing the mist, Anna stiffed noticing people's gazes, her fingers squeezed one handle of the bag hanging on her back. There was no makeup concealing her insecure features this time.
"Yoru, where have you been?!" the same girl whose has threatened Annabelle with a stick ran out from a hovel and knelt in front of the child, holding her tight. With her chin over the girl's shoulder, she opened the eyes and realized the stranger right there, a few inches from them. "What is she doing in here?!" She got up quickly, assuming a combative posture.
"Calm down, sister" Yoru said peacefully. "She is not a yokai"...
"How so?! Take a look at her!" The lass was about to pull the stick tied at her back.
"She's a foreigner" Motoko told, rolling her eyes like that was an obvious matter. "That's why she looks weird". She grimaced, embarrassing Annabelle a bit.
There was the western woman facing such situation again, it was everything she wanted to avoid.
"She's just like us" Yoru said. "She lost many people she loved and is alone in the world, wandering around, facing dangers... Will we abandon someone just because of their looks?"
"Yoru, are you certain you didn't sense any youki in this woman?" For the last time, the warrior showed herself suspicious.
"Yes, the lass has an aura similar to mine". The kid smiled and proudly pointed to her very self.
"Listen, it doesn't need to last forever" finally, Annabelle opened her mouth. "Yet, if I can stay here for a while I'll be very grateful. At least till I decide what I shall do of my life".
To that point, most of the residents around were paying attention on that conversation.
"We never deny assistance to the ones in need" Another woman left the hovel the suspicious girl was minutes before, her advanced age was reflecting on the whiteness of her straight hair. "You are welcome in here for as long as you choose to stay".
The elder's words was enough to calm everyone down.
"Forgive me for being hostile earlier, my name is Himawari" The stick's owner bowed respectfully, however her dark grey eyes were still fixated on the foreigner with aloofness.
"Oh..." Anna took some time to find a way to express herself without sounding too much uncomfortable. "It's fine". Was it? She didn't feel any spontaneous sheltering, not from the most of them at least. Wasn't her intent to impose her presence to anyone. A plenty of thoughts were running into her head, making the lass question if shouldn't it be better just to find somewhere else to go. And where would she go? The most appropriate would be finding a way to go back to her motherland, but only wondering about the possibility of leaving the lands of the rising sun made her heart ache.
I still hope to see him again. She looked down, aware of her feelings, blaming herself for not moving forward for once, laying a hand over her chest, the shard underneath was discretely pulsing. This won't fade, not while this shard in in here.
"Come eat something" the old woman called her, interrupting the sudden anguish within.
Annabelle followed her to the hut, than sat in front of a pan placed by a small fire, with some vegetable soup boiling inside. The turquoises focused on the liquid, she remained quiet.
"They will get used to you" the elder spoke as she could see through the newcomer's tension "Yet, the true question might be: will you get used to them, to this place? I have a feeling you are not going to stay with us for long".
"For many years I haven't stopped in a place for too long, so I don't really know if I'm capable to get used to it". Anna confessed.
"Stay as much as you wish, where we can feed one mouth, we can feed two. Many of the people who is living here also were nomads before, others came from villages devasted by wars, by thieves or by yokai. It's rare somebody who is living with us not having a sad tale to share. We have lost sons, daughters, husbands, parents..." the elder was telling, sitting on the other side of the pan, moisturizing the soup there inside. "Yoru is lucky to have a sister at least. She is such a special girl, is she not?"
"And she needs protection. If any yokai discover about her gifts..." the foreigner inhaled deeply.
"That is why we are so well hidden, we all want Yoru to have a safe and ordinary childhood. Therefore, there is the sacred mount protecting us" she smiled, not a bit preoccupied.
"What's the story of this mount right ahead?" Anna asked, intrigued.
"The energy surrounding it is so pure that keeps wicked demons and humans away. Tells the tale, every being whose hearts are somehow darkened do not dare to step a foot in this place" the elder explained while taking a bow nearby. "Well, you may eat now. Help yourself" She delivered it to Anna then.
"So that's the reason why you decided to live here..." the lass sunk the bow in the soup, then she tasted it's flavor and it felt like heaven. Real food, at last! "Thank you for sheltering me, I'll do whatever is in my power to be useful in here" Anna sighed, and soon devoured that meal to it's last drop, finally, she cleaned her mouth with the back of her hand, then said: "Although some of you know the true about my human nature, I rather pretend I am a yokai though".
"But you don't need to do this." The little girl appeared on the door and ended up listening Annabelle's words.
"Come in, Yoru" The old woman lifted a hand, inviting the child. The little one ran excitedly and sat by Annabelle's side. "She is right" the elder said. "You have no need to maintain the farce". Her dark tiny eyes stared at the blue ones.
"Anyway, people don't use to believe me when I tell I'm human, and although this mount possess a forcefield, I think some powerful yokai may be able to resist this energy. So, if they hear that a yokai is protecting the villagers, perhaps they will think twice before coming closer". Protection wasn't the only reason making Annabelle choose to keep pretending. Her higher goal was to build a new identity so she couldn't be found by Inuyasha and his friends, most of all. What a shame would it be to face the group after the last time they met... She has protected Naraku throwing her own body on his front, and now people that once has been her friends must despise her. If Anna considered herself prudent, she would feel regretful, instead that was the last feeling she could have. So, it might be good to keep distance, to lose touch with whomever she knew. Annabelle decided just to wait for the day when the spider hanyo would come to take the jewel shard he has put into her chest, only then her chains would finally be broken and the lass would never look back, she had to focus on that idea as many times as it was needed so her mind could be convinced, and she did, while standing up then walking to the window, where she stood quietly admiring the local landscape, the residents and the translucent mist, calm and pure as her very aura.
Anna longed to feel herself at home.

Kohaku was wandering around the obscure corridors of the castle, his thoughts were all locked in the last encounter with the western ginger woman. From the moment he listened about the story of her life, her divagations of how necessary was to feel the pain, the little lad couldn't help but think exhaustively about such matter, questioning himself, trying to find answers and ending up discovering only more questions. Then, an image of a brown eyed fair lass, with straight dark hair filled his head. Kohaku didn't know who she was, didn't have a clue of what her name was, but something about her made she looks like a sheltering being who would guard him in his dreams, it was like she was someone who knew him since he has been born. Who is she? Who?!
"Hey" Kagura's voice made the kid stop walking abruptly. "What a weird brat..." She uttered, resting her back in the wall while crossing arms under her chest. "Naraku is calling for you".
"The lady of the flaming hair, she lived here once, didn't she?" He asked before giving his back to the demoness to fulfill his duty.
"Yes, it seems you do remember some things..." Kagura shrugged like she didn't care, however the gleam in her eyes showed otherwise, those rounded shinning rubies seemed even to be in mourn. "Come, let's go together. Naraku awaits and lately he has been very grumpy." She gave steps forward, walking ahead of the boy.
Kohaku ceased the conversation and followed the Wind Sorceress through the long dark corridor. As soon as they were in front of the Spider's bedchamber, Kagura slid the door and the kid entered. He knelt in front of the creature who was sitting in the corner of the room. Fortunately, Sango's brother was wearing a demon slayer mask, or he would succumb to the thick miasma spread all over the place, darkening it like a shadowy fog. Even Kagura felt vulnerable, as being swallowed by such crushing aura. Perhaps because she has born from the hanyo's body, the demoness could distinguish in his sinister energy the anger, and also a bitter sadness. She almost pitied him...
"Leave, Kagura" Like he could feel a shade of compassion on her gaze, Naraku commanded, his voice sounded deep. His servant would not dare to contest. Finally alone with his other minion, he said: "Listen, Kohaku, for this is what you must do..." while the arachnid was explaining his plan, the almost complete Shikon no Tama on his palm shone.

A few days passed by, Annabelle felt them as years, so slow and unending each one seemed to last. She would wake, feed herself, then help the villagers with daily tasks like taking care of the harvest, sometimes she would tell some stories for the children, and when the afternoon began she would wander into the forest nearby for hours, till get closer to the enormous mount. There was something mystical around it, which made the lass feel at peace. Could it be the sunlight effect behind the veil of mist? Did it care? The mystery surrounding the mount made it looks even more charming.
As the hours ran and the golden star of the day started to descend behind the hills, Anna was ready to her journey back to the village. Her lumen mixed with the stars' while she flew above the woods till arrive the entrance of her new homeland, where a friendly little girl would usually be waiting for her return.
"You are like a priestess, but you aren't a priestess though" Yoru commented, smiling, sitting over a large stone, happily bouncing her legs.
"You are very clever, just as another girl I once met" Anna chuckled, then sighed while remembering Rin. Soon she regained the temperate behavior. Although the lass loved children, she sought to keep a safe affective distance. After everything Annabelle has been through, a fear of getting attached grew as a thorn inside her heart. Still, the little girl was insistent and did not get intimidated by the lass reticent way. Yoru followed Anna like a shadow.
"I think you are a fairy" the child said casually, following the foreigner into the path surrounded by flowers.
"And I think I've been telling too many stories for you." She laughed, without turning back to glance the girl.
"Or... you could be a duruid" Yoru persisted.
"Druid" Anna corrected her and stopped stepping forward, looking at the kid with one eye over her shoulder. "Druid would sound more appropriate, but druids are not so different from monks and priests, Yoru. So, I am like a priestess". That said, she resumed walking into the village's entrance direction.
"No, you're not. Priestesses do not bring the dead back to life" she said with joy.
Annabelle stopped again, a chill ran down her spine.
"I saw you reviving a bunny another day, Shinrinko" She reached the foreigner spot and ceased her gracious steps in front of the lass. Those graffiti eyes twinkled in wonder. "You found it dead, in the middle of the wood, took it in your hands, then puffed a light into it's mouth and the little bunny jumped away, across the valley!" Yoru imitated the jumps of the tiny animal and laughed.
"Yoru, please, you cannot tell this to anyone, understand?" Anna leaned in front of the girl and asked, touching her delicate shoulders. The western woman's face was as pale as the moon in the sky, luckily the rice powder covered it's shade. "Promise me you won't say a word about this to anyone!"
"I promise, if you promise me you will be my friend." The child smiled playfully. Annabelle took a deep breath and covered the forehead with one hand. "Why do you keep yourself distant from everyone? Don't you like us?" The childish voice trembled a bit.
"It's not like that, little Yoru..." she sighed and lowered her gaze "You shouldn't be here, look how the sky has darkened fast! Let's go..."
"Only when you answer me properly." Yoru crossed her arms and turned her face to the side.
"Alright, but let's walk while I speak." Anna raised a hand to the kid. Hands given, they walked side by side between many fireflies, so Annabelle began: "I won't stay with you all forever, for I have plans to go back to my country as soon as I am able." She noticed the girl's complexion fade into disappointment. "Don't be sad, it will be better this way, I miss my home. So, as I will not fixate in here, I'd rather not being fond of anyone".
"It is sad, if you grew fond of somebody, maybe you would change your mind and stay with us..."
"No, I must leave this place, Yoru" Anna was very direct, her fingers suddenly got cold and the child felt it.
"And what are you waiting for leaving? What binds you here?" The greyish curious eyes stared at the lass.
"There is something with me that is not mine. I'm waiting for the owner to come fetch it. When I get rid of this thing, I'll finally be free to go". Only mentioning such curse made her stiff.
"It's the shard, isn't it?" Once more the little girl made Annabelle feel stunned, her steps faltered one more time. "When the owner will come to retrieve it?"
"I don't know... but I need you to keep a secret of this matter too. If people discover I'm carrying it with me, they will certainly expell me from the village." The clear-blue pools trembled, reflecting the light of the fireflies and the cold shine of a distinct melancholy. Then she felt a gentle caress on her hand and her eyes went down, focusing on the girl who was tenderly smiling at her.
"Friends keep each other's secrets" Yoru said.
"Yes..." at last she retrieved such smile with one similar and walked together with the child till they entered the village. There, their fingers parted. Yoru ran to her home and was scolded by her sister Himawari for going out without permission.
Annabelle got into the elder woman's cabin, where has a straw futon in a corner arranged just for her. The old lady was used to sleep early, so Anna had all privacy in the world to lay down and think about her life. The soup, as always, was ready to be rewarmed any time she wanted to eat. In that night, however, the lass wasn't hungry. Watching the candle's flame dancing in the wind, her fingers rubbed her own chest, where the gemstone's shard was hidden. A discrete electric discharge got her by surprise. Although Anna knew, deep inside, that if she really wanted she would achieve to take it off herself, the Scottish woman was reluctant on trying. A part of her seemed to not want to get rid of the piece, maybe for fearing her feelings to cease. That same part of her being desired to have any sort of feelings towards Naraku, making her miss him devotedly. The bastard had freed her of nightmares about Kagewaki to now, on the Young Master's place, haunt her conscience everytime those blue eyes would close, was it to sleep or simply to blink. Memories emerged as vivid painted lines, there was a cold void replacing the warmth of arms that once embraced her in the night, she could still feel the hardness of his muscular body against her soft curves, she could even hear his breathing, feel it softly blow against her neck, waving her hair. How tough was to sleep alone when his presence once calmed her so much! Yet, since Naraku has sent her away, the only time they met was when his heart wasn't inside his body. Then, the hanyo never chased her again, not even a vassal or a Saimyosho was sent to stalk her on his behalf. It was like he no longer felt any urge for her, like he at last has got over it once and for all. But, if it was the case, why that man who represented his heart made such a passionate confession? Would it be possible that Naraku has found another way to get rid of him? The more she thought, bigger her confusion became, to the point of making Anna shake her head and turn to a side and another on the futon, closing her eyes tightly. She would count sheep, she would do whatever she needed to evade such thoughts and think about anything that wasn't related to Naraku or Kagewaki. To hell with them both!
And there it was another long night ceasing so the light of day could arise, the cycle would begin as usual, only this time Anna tried to act more friendly not only with Yoru, but with everybody who lived in the village. Himawari didn't treat her so suspiciously, probably her younger sister has been complimenting the foreigner a lot so she was finally letting her walls go down. Somehow, Annabelle felt relieved and engaged in a new activity, the lass became an apprentice of fighting with a wooden stick. Himawari offered her lessons and she gladly accepted, so the first hours after lunch they would train together, and after she would take her leave to admire the mount nearby, and not alone anymore, for Yoru was always around. Since the little girl already knew a lot about the foreigner's powers, Anna would carry the child on her back and they would float together, till get close to the place the ginger woman finally learned the name:
"Mount Hakurei" Yoru sighed stunned "It's so beautiful..."
"Indeed" Anna whispered, feeling mesmerized by the view.

Sometimes, when the moon was high on the stellar dome, Annabelle gathered with some villagers and they sat along each other forming a big circle in the center of their land, between the houses, just to listen her sing and play a improvising harp Motoko carved in wood, the lassie surely was a gifted carpenter. After getting more intimate with those people, Anna felt comfortable to entertain them, this way she could also find a distraction. Music would make her sleep a bit more tranquil, even if her core ached of missing.
Although, bit by bit, the red-haired woman was adapting to that place and it's residents, during the day that same part of her which persisted on keeping the jewel shard, yearned for any news or just a glance of him. Nothing came though, not a sign...
He left me, he truly left me. It pained to reach such conclusion. In all those wanderings through the woods and around the mount, she hadn't noticed a single trace of Naraku's presence, and he should be strong enough to endure the local aura. If he really wanted to show himself, nothing would impede him, not even a sacred land. You could at least come to get this damn shard! Why do you torture me so?
Then an old knew type of anguish fell over Anna again. He may be chasing Kikyo though... She squeezed her cheeks immediately, to cut off such infamous thought.
She slept, then woke up, lived another day, slept again and more time passed by this way, till Annabelle had no clue of what season was blessing those lands, for no matter what time of the year it was, the flowers around never died.
Her routine was the same during the morning and the afternoon, then, when the night was arriving and Annabelle was landing on the woods with Yoru after visiting the mount, the foreigner felt the air around growing heavier and her heartbeats raced.
"What is it, miss Shinrinko?!" The little girl asked, getting down from Anna's back.
"Yoru, I need you to return to the village, alright?!" She said, gasping.
"But... why?!" the child insisted.
"I believe an old acquaintance of mine is nearby, and I must have a word with him" Her eyes were shinning, Yoru couldn't guess if it was for joy or agony though. "Please, Yoru..." she asked in a low, supplicant tone.
"Alright then, go on!" Yoru accepted her defeat, mostly when a large sweet smile colored Annabelle's face. Their conversation ended there, in the next instant the woman was already running, vanishing between the trees.
To be continued...
