When Annabelle ran through the woods, she noticed not only the air's density has changed, but also a tenuous miasma fog has mixed with the whitish clouds. He was far, yet not so much. It was him! As the stars were vanishing into the vastness of the sky and everything on view was such purple mist, she just knew that was the right path to follow. Her albescent aura burned out from her body, the moon pendant shone as a lantern, trying to contain the burst of her energy. Finally, the lass stopped and leaned against a tree, waiting for him to descend from the heights. She could barely breathe, neither control her impulses, for she has lost the sense of reason, not understanding even why such euphoria took over her body with the thought of finding him, after every sorrow he has inflicted her.
I just want to see him again, that's all.
So, her wish came true, just not in the way she had expected. Naraku fell from the skies and hit the ground, his body was human only from the waist to the head, his arms were half cut off, and the other part of him, once separated and struggling to reunite to the upper one, was a big amount of arthropods parts and tentacles which shook noisily. His entire being was covered by a translucent mucus that made his long raven curls look straight, the locks fell over the squalid face buried in the grass and he grunted in agony.
One more time, Anna didn't think, just left her resentments and pride behind to run to the hanyo. When Naraku could realize, he was already accommodated upon her legs. The ginger woman found a way to spin his upper piece of body and sheltered his head, dirty with sand, wet by goop.
Facing the creature who stared at his every feature while desperately gasping, with panic overflowing from her turquoise eyes, he just chuckled briefly.
"What happened to you?!" She yelled, hysterical, squeezing the arachnid's face, moving away strands of soggy hair from it's shapes.
"You will not like the answer..." although he was weak, his twisted sense of humor seemed intact.
"Naraku!" Anna screamed the name even louder, angry and terrified at the same time.
"I sent Kohaku to kidnap Sesshomaru's protégé..." the hanyo's tiredness made him unable to finish the explanation.
"Why have you done that, you idiot?!" She kept vociferating, yet the only sign of aggressiveness was her voice tone, her gestures showed otherwise. Annabelle's hands ran through his head, then she evolved the broken spider with one arm. A single tear poured from an eye, washing away the pale rice powder from the piece of skin it ran down.
"To lure Sesshomaru to my castle and then absorb him." Those crimson pools were locked on the blue ones, and watched the clear gems get widened with his last statement.
"You did what?!" This time, her trembling lips just murmured.
"You like him, don't you?" He threw the idea to the wind, then groaned in pain. Her arm held him even tighter. "Sesshomaru would be a good match to you, since your dearest Kagewaki is gone".
"Stop saying such nonsenses! Are you mad to mess around with him? Do you wish to get killed?!" She was aware that if the hanyo was so injured, the attempt of absorbing the powerful daiyokai has been a failure, and Rin must be safe. Anna caught him in her other arm, suspending the arachnid a bit so she could have him a bit closer. Behind his sardonic façade, into his eyes the lass could identify frustration and a kind of conformity that made her desperation increase. "This is what you want, isn't it?! To be killed by someone!" She scolded in annoyance, more tears pumped in the corner of her eyes though.
"You know..." With some difficulty Naraku rose one amputated arm and from it's elbow flesh began to grow and the hanyo achieved to regenerate, so he could have fingers to caress her horrified face, even if he could barely control the trembling limb. His hand touched her cold cheek, the rice powder and the arabesques painted in blue melted in his palm. "It wouldn't be so bad to die like this, having you as the last view before I follow the path to the underworld". He smiled so softly this time that it looked almost innocent. Anna shook her head frantically in denial, her whole body trembled while she held the hand tenderly stroking her face. "But I am not ready, Annabelle..." Naraku concluded, his smile faded and his very paler feature denounced fear and suffering.
The foreigner lass immediately understood the reason why he was there, the motive that guided him to come to her. It wasn't because he missed her, nor for just being unable to stand staying away. Naraku came seeking for help, it was crystal clear in the way he was staring at her, yet the hanyo was too proud to admit it. His body was begging though, otherwise he would perish, she knew. This time it has been far more serious, and each clash which would come in the future might be worse, because his enemies were growing stronger and Annabelle was certain the spider knew that he would meet his ending sooner or later. Truly, it could be just now, right there. Naraku struggled to regenerate a single arm, his lower body part was still fighting to get attached to his waist, he would not be capable to regenerate the rest. He was weak enough to not have conditions to form a barrier, so Inuyasha would soon be able to scent his smell, find him and then finish Naraku once and for all.
One more time, the hanyo's fate was in the fairies descendant's hands, was up to her to make the choice to offer peace to the rest of the world or to her own heart. Anna caught her breath, the intense cry dropped from her chin to his bare chest. She grunted and pressed Naraku against herself. The lass wasn't ready to say goodbye as well. And even knowing he would take advantage of her vulnerability to get his wishes granted, she united their mouths and poured down her warm healing energy inside him, while holding his upper body firmly as long as she could. His other arm was rebuilt, and in instants the countless monstrous parts changed into two human legs, already attached to the rest of himself. As soon as Annabelle felt his hand holding her nape, she released his body and Naraku sat in front of her.
Seeing him there, naked – his milky skin with no scars on it's front although he might be fragile yet – made her come to her senses and suddenly an unmeasurable rage overflowed from within and the lass just released her demons on him. A scream burned out her throat and she jumped over the hanyo, punching, slapping his chest and shoulders. As she was unburdening the anger, her tears poured like a storm, stealing her strength, making her whole self shake while she was sobbing and panting. Naraku held Anna's hands and pulled her to another embrace, pressing her face against his chest, where a heart was beating quite fast. Though tears still persisted on soaking her complexion, to hear that intense pounds began to calm the woman down. Meanwhile, he silently stroked her flaming locks of hair, squeezing the delicate body inside his arms. His chin rested over her head, his gaze looking at the distance.
"Why do you torment me this way?" The question sounded like a lament "Release me, please... Take this shard off my chest..." She whispered, begging. He pressed her even more into his embrace and sunk his nose on her coppery locks, then rubbed nostrils against her neck, inhaling the roses' fragrance, feeling drunk of her whole being. "Naraku..." she moaned and her arms laid down, hands touching the grass. Her watery eyes raised to the sky, starlight gleamed as the miasma cloud was vanishing away.
"I cannot," at last he said. "I don't want to let you go." Naraku murmured at her shivered ear so low and weak as he still was. Maybe such state was the very reason he couldn't hide his fragility of body and soul.
"It's too late, you sent me away yourself, I warned you!" Anna bit her lower lip and put her hands on his chest, trying to push him. Although Naraku wasn't fully recovered, a mere human's shove would not be enough to repel him. "You can't just throw me away and then come back as if nothing has ever happened, you wasted your chance!" She hissed.
"Did I ever have a chance to begin with?" The question escaped in a whisper, as his nose departed from her neck so he could look into her eyes once more with his tired, deep red ones. The velvet tone of his voice, the way he stared at her made Annabelle disarm herself and swallow slowly, feeling a knot forming in her throat, for not even she knew exactly what to say to him. The doubt about her feelings being an illusion have been tormenting her core, she could only find such answer when that shard no longer laid inside of her flesh.
Naraku watched her hand raise slowly, and then softly caress his cheek, like an attempt to pacify the darkness within him. The hanyo closed his eyes and sighed.
"I've missed you so much..." that was all the lass could say, and along with the confession, her forehead touched his.
"Are you happy living in here?" He asked, a bit calmer, while resting his hands upon her shoulders, smoothing them.
"Define happiness" Anna said, her eyelids sealed.
"I fear I am not able to do so, forgive me," Naraku discretely smirked, "for I am not sure if I ever knew what happiness is like," and with such bitter confession he made her heart shatter again.
"Naraku..." his name flew from her mouth one more time, and Annabelle felt tempted to kiss him. Indeed, her lips came to rub against his, making them open a bit and try to suck hers. Then, the foreigner moved her face away and looked around showing herself quite worried. "You can't form a barrier yet, am I wrong?"
"It will take a while for me to regain this power" the spider told while gazing at her, analyzing her features. He saw her breathe deeply in, then she untied the ribbon of her necklace with the moon pendant. "What are you doing?" Naraku asked. She took his hand and put the necklace on it's palm. "But... this protects you, it conceals your aura!" He kept looking at her with confusion.
"This pendant will help you to conceal your scent and your youki while you're fully recovering. That's all I set out to do for you". After a long inhaling, she said while releasing the air.
"And you? Your energy shall lure yokai from every corner of these lands, they will try to consume you!" Naraku insisted, still reluctant to accept her gesture.
"I can deal with that, I have the shard you put in me, and this place is protected by the pure energy of a sacred mount" Anna told him, while puting her other hand over his, covering the crystal moon with her fingers. "Right now, you need this more than I do. When you are recomposed, feel free to give it back." So, the lass rose up, shook her skirt to clean the dirt, and noticing him still apathetic, sitting over the grass, she offered a hand to the hanyo, who accepted the little help to stand up.
On his feet, Naraku faced her, stunned by her altruistic deeds. Silently he witnessed her taking the necklace from his hand to put it around his neck herself. Delicate and dangerously close to him, Annabelle tied the thin ribbon, her fingertips accidentally rubbed against his skin. Naraku could feel her warm breath touching his face, her arousal exhaling like an aphrodisiac, the shard inside her chest even made her dizzy of yearning, but the lass held still. As soon as Anna finished to tie the necklace, her hands slid upon his shoulders and chest, and in seconds moved away.
"Thank you." Naraku said with his low, husky voice.
"You must go now, before they find you" Looking at the grass to not have to meet his eyes, squeezing the white fabric of her outfit, Anna spoke.
Naraku didn't answer with words, instead he brushed some orange locks away from her eyes, then his hands cupped her cheeks, inducing the lass to look at him again. The stiffness of her joints didn't discourage him to caress her pinkish cheeks with his thumbs and stroke her curls.
"Please..." Her voice barely sounded, melting like butter at his every touch. Her eyes closed and her hands once tensed, opened their fingers. Annabelle felt the softness of his lips over hers, first in a gentle caress, then a wet warmth contoured them, finding no trouble to open that entrance to explore it from inside. Anna didn't retrieve, nor rejected his kiss, but just stood still, like a doll, letting herself to be tasted, yearning to believe that time has stopped in that moment and only the two of them existed in the world. Then, with a cold wind's blow arrival those sensations ceased. When her eyes opened at last, the foreigner found herself alone in the woods, Naraku left in the same way he has appeared, like a mirage.
Not so far away though, evolved by the white energy blessed by her lunar stone, the hanyo was floating, lost in confusion, unable to comprehend her, neither himself.
Damnit, Annabelle! Why do you have to be like this? Naraku thought while remembering the tenderness inside her eyes, even after everything he has put her through. This night, he came to her hoping she would save him, yet after being saved, the Spider hated himself for achieving success on such task.
It would be so much easier if you hated me like the rest of them... Why do you not hate me, woman? Helpless to contain the numerous questions, he stopped in front of a huge mount. Red eyes got stuck on a thin barrier around that enormous elevation. The crystal moon hanging around his neck twinkled iridescent and he immediately realized that little gem would protect him with it's energy. Naraku narrowed his tired pools, the tormented heart of his could find no rest though. So, he put a hand over his chest and pressed it lightly, deep inside his core the ancient wish of getting rid of that vibrating piece of his humanity screamed as many times before. If only he could rip that thing out and throw it far, far away...
I wish I could be by your side, Annabelle Rose. Although the furious urge to destroy his very essence, the longing was still uncontrollable, and the fact of being apart from her for all that time just made him feel even more bitter and miserable.
Forget this idea, you must get rid of it! Ah, those voices... Always those voices.
How can I forget when I know she wants to be with me as well?
She does not, it is all an illusion, a lie you created yourself and which has turned so convincing that even the woman came to believe in such nonsense. She does not love you though, she pities you instead!
If Annabelle does not feel anything for me, why did she miss me so? This time, the arachnid seemed to be more certain of his ideas and hopes. She cares about me...
Have you already forgot that being with you is a death sentence? They insisted.
I can think of a way for us to escape, to go for a place far away from all of this and live together, peacefully...
Till she gets old and then perish? The girl is human, you fool!
The pair of scarlet eyes widened, Naraku's mouth opened, but no sound came through his throat. His whole body went rigid and cold, as if the flesh has turned into ice.
No matter what choice will you make, you will lose her anyway, either for another person or for time itself. Those feelings are useless, if you keep feeding them, soon you will be consumed from inside out and all that shall remain of yourself will be this misery you are feeling right now.
The hand once pressing his chest dig it's nails on the skin, Naraku frowned, clenching his jaw. His eyelids closed firmly, and as soon as they opened, a glimpse of sadness showed itself as a little spot lost inside an ocean of resentment. How could he be so ridiculous, conjecturing giving up of everything already conquered so far just to live a fleeting romance with a female human? The hanyo wondered, locked between pain, pride and ambition for power. How could he still desire to follow this fate, even being aware of the tragic ending it would have?
You need Shikon no Tama anyhow, Naraku, to become a complete yokai, or even to ask for immortality to your dearest little human...
I, Naraku, would ask for the jewel eternal youth to Annabelle? He disdained himself. More than wanting her to live forever so he would not have to deal with any pain of loss, the halfbreed demon longed to be freed of the bond keeping him attached to his human condition.
With eyes fixated on the mount, Naraku had an idea then. With the protection of the moon pendant, he crossed the translucent barrier, his feet touched the rocky ground and started a walk towards the place the hanyo considered as a potential hideout. In there he found out about the resentful soul responsible to keep the sacred place unstained, and since the spider was a great connoisseur of the worst human agonies, he faced no hardships on convincing the sad spirit of a monk to accept him there. Every move of his was induced by the choir of those hideous voices singing an ode to hate and despair.
To be continued...

The chapter's title is inspired on a quote from Naraku in original series:
"The slayer and the monk... let them spend their final moments together in private, won't you Inuyasha? Heh heh heh... Their sorrow feeds the darkness of the jewel nicely. How ironic. The more they love each other, the darker their despair..."
Do you remember it? It happens when Miroku is about to be swallowed by Kazaana, but Sango refuses to let him go and is ready to die by his side. Then, paying attention on Naraku's words Kagome finally notices how he understands human feelings very well, and find out Shikon no Tama hasn't granted his real wish. As watching the series, I have always thought of Naraku as someone who was suffering in silence, that in the end he was the most sad, lonely, and miserable character, but he handled pain with bitterness and converted all his sorrows and frustrations into hatred, so the moment when Kagome confronts him with his own humanity, when she finally realize how sad and even pitiful he was, was also when I jumped from my chair thinking: "It wasn't only a fanfic inside my head!" LOL. Let's leave jokes aside now, but this is how I see, and how I write about Naraku too. Beyond his cruel façade and evil schemes, Naraku is mostly a tragic villain.
Well... we reached that part when Naraku sends Kohaku to kidnap Rin, setting a trap to Sesshomaru to go to his castle, where he tries to absorb the daiyokai, yet Inuyasha arrives in time, and with the red blade of Tetsusaiga he manages to break Naraku's barrier and save the day. So, it's after this event that our beloved spider seeks for Annabelle's help, and then, there is my version of how he achieved to get inside Mount Hakurei, I hope my dear readers have enjoyed it :3
Soon I'll post the next chapter! Please share your thoughts and opinions with me, it always warms my heart. Thank you for spending some time reading my "little" tale!
