Hey, dear readers! Here I am again! Thank you all for keep following and reading this very-long-fic!
Oh! I forgot to mention previously, but Annabelle and Ailyn's height are about 170cm, Bankotsu on it's turn is 168cm tall if I'm not mistaken. Considering Ailyn is wearing boots with heels, she must look 7cm higher than him more or less, so that's why she is always calling him "shorty".
Well, that said, have a nice time reading this HUGE chapter then! ;)
XXX
Annabelle was washing some clothes in a river nearby the village where she has been "hosted" - so she considered herself, merely a guest, for it would help her to remember how temporary her situation was.
The lass focused on rubbing the fabric with her fingers then. Once and a while she looked around just to contemplate the nature around, admiring the shapes from the trees and the shrubs, noting how colorful and fragrant that forest was. Sometimes her eyes closed while she sighed, seeking to feel the peace such place emanated even if some yokai still lurked around the corners of the woods. Luckily for Anna, they were far too weak to dare coming closer, or her light would fulfill the task of mixing itself to the barrier's purity, and all that would remain of those creatures should be ashes flowing in the wind. They used to be Reptiles, tiny arachnids and bugs demons only, never humanoid, for the lass' relief.
"Shinrinko!" The tender, girlish voice sounded from afar, the little girl came jumping on stones, trying to keep her balance over tiptoes.
"Yoru!" Soon she ran to the child and held her in arms, taking her off such rocky trail. "I've already told you it's dangerous to leave the village by yourself!"
"Since that day when you met your friend, things have been this way..." the kid sighed in disappointment. Her greyish eyes could see beyond large leaves the mischievous gazes, and even if some of those creatures were imperceptible for her sight, she still could feel their youki spreading around.
"Did you tell anyone about my meeting?" Anna asked while putting the girl on the ground carefully and then leaned down. Her pale complexion and trembling voice denounced her fear, so did her twinkling, tremulous blue pools. Yoru smiled, then shook her head in denial. "Thank you!" Finally the lass' shoulders relaxed and her eyes went down, locked on the grass, blurred by the feeling of guilty. Her decision of saving Naraku ended up putting those people in danger.
"You shine so much, Shinrinko..." the little girl took one curled ginger lock and began to braid it, admiration reflected on her speech and manners. "As the days passes by, you shine even more".
"Maybe I should leave, I can't keep exposing everyone to such danger..." She closed her eyes, filled with grief, her hands entwined over her belly.
"Please, don't say that!" Yoru moaned, almost crying, then held her tight. "You protect us all, I know you do!"
Annabelle spoke no more, all she did was to retrieve the embrace of such an innocent child. Yoru was right, as the time passed by, the foreigner's aura glowed more intensely than before, so did the jewel shard into her chest. Sooner or later someone would find her. In fact, there was indeed a person who felt her benignant energy, even from afar...
XXX
As they had planned, the Band of Seven members finally separated so each one of the men could approach any Naraku's foe by the way and confront them. Meanwhile, Bankotsu directed his attention to retrieving his so dear "companion" which he mentioned many times, almost incapable of stop talking about it. Ailyn couldn't help but wonder who was this so important person to the mercenary, and she could swear that mathematics wasn't working, for his other six comrades already composed the number "seven". So were they eight then? Oh, and did it matter? Since she has felt her sister's warm energy emanating from the distance, Ailyn wasn't able to think about anything else. When the Red Rose barely realized, her mind was so disconnected from the present reality that her ears perceived the sounds as they were merely distant echoes.
"Oi" the leader of the mercenaries turned his attention to the western woman, she was so lost inside her reveries that didn't listen his voice at first. "Hey!" Bankotsu called out louder, almost making her jump on surprise.
"What?" Ailyn glared at him in annoyance.
"You're too silent." The man pondered, speaking with his mouth filled by meat of a little animal he had hunted in the middle of the woods and ended up overdoing in the fire pit.
"And what matter do I have to discuss with a man such as you?" She mocked as always, sitting on the other side of the flames while passing her fingertips upon the fire like she could mold it's shapes.
"Your company is far from being my favorite as well, but since we have to walk together you could try to be a bit nicer, or at least you could make us a decent meal." Saying that, he gave another grandiose bite on the seared meat.
"And there he goes telling me that I have to know how to cook because I am a woman..." the lass snored and rolled her eyes. "You men are so obvious... When will your comrades return so we can go after your little friend or whatever this companion of yours can be?"
"It won't take long, I'm sure." Unworried, the mercenary finished eating and cleaned his mouth with the back of a hand. His gesture provoked an instantaneous disgusted reaction on Ailyn. Bankotsu laughed, not embarrassed with his lack of manners at all. Then, he laid back on the grass, resting his head over his arms.
She gazed at him in silence, focusing on his figure. He had such delicate and innocent features for a professional killer! His nose was perfectly designed, his lips curved in a satisfied smile were charming indeed, and his clear clothes even matched with the beautiful tone of his skin. Unaware of herself, Ailyn persisted on staring at him even when the mercenary has already noticed her eyes carved on his shapes and was retrieving the gaze.
"How about you help me to remove this armor so I can sleep comfortably, huh?" He teased, finally bringing the Red Rose back to her senses.
"In your dreams, shorty!" She nervously laughed, then threw her golden locks behind while keeping her eyes on any direction opposite to him.
Bankotsu chuckled and took off the armor by himself. At last, he closed his eyes again, laying over the green soft grass. Hearing his slow, heavy breath, Ailyn resumed to contemplate his forms. The lad seemed to sleep peacefully, as if he has never been executed so violently. And whoever looked at his body resting in there, whoever got a glimpse of his flushed skin would never guess his life was sustained by a single Shikon shard hidden into his neck.
In another time, the blonde woman would have thought of taking advantage of his sleeping state to steal the precious piece from his flesh. Yet, in such starry night, all Ailyn could think of was a singular light she could feel emanating, and she knew pretty well from where it was coming from. The lass needed a moment alone to investigate the matter, and without much consideration, Anna's twin just got up and walked into the woods, leading her steps to a small lake on the edge of a ravine.
The Red Rose was mistaken when she believed the mercenary fell asleep so fast. As much as he looked so serene, his instincts were of a survivor and his sleep was as light as a feather. The sound of her dress dragging upon the soil made his eyes open. His head turned to the side the lass should have gone. When Bankotsu didn't see Lynnie there, he sat and recalled how their day has been like. Her behaviour was particularly odd, she acted distantly and distracted, his curiosity about the woman instigated the mercenary to follow her trail, for he was surely not like anybody else, the lad was someone who has been assassinated in his early ages, and though Bankotsu has indeed enjoyed his short time on Earth, still he has not experienced everything the world have to offer. His life has been interrupted on it's prime. However, now he was back, having the chance to live again was priceless and the lad would drink from this fountain till getting drunk, never losing time abstaining himself on doing whatever he wanted to, was it to slice bodies in pieces or simply indulging his will of chasing after an exotic and temperamental girl.
There, the leader of the Shichinintai went down the same path Ailyn did, walking through the trees till finding the lass kneeling in front of the lake, drawing circles in the water with her fingertips. Her eyes were closed while her mouth recited words in a foreign tongue. The ring on her little finger glowed greenish and it's lumen alone made the woman and her surroundings shine.
Bankotsu cogitated to come closer, but feared the unexpected proximity would make her stop whatever she was doing.
Bit by bit, an image formed in the water as if the liquid has turned into a mirror. A woman identical to Ailyn except for the hair color, sleeping over a humble futon into a hut reflected on the watery glass. And, in the same slow way as it appeared, the mysterious effigy vanished into the water, making the stars resume to be the only reflection along the tormented features of a golden haired woman on that quiet lake.
Ailyn washed her face, then hid the eyes behind her hands. Bankotsu, from the back of a tree, saw her shoulders shaking some times and heard some low sobs that didn't last more than few seconds. Soon, the Scottish lass washed her face once more, rubbed her eyes and finally the only trace of crying was a discrete pinkish shade on the tip of her nose. Her remaining features were as firm as they had ever been while she rose up, cleaning the dirt from the red dress lightened by the tenuous fireflies' shine. Her dark cape laid on the ground, right behind her, as soon as the woman turned around to take it back, she noted the man staring her from a tree. He hadn't make a real effort to hide.
This time, Ailyn did not fill him with questions nor sent him away. In truth, she just gave up on covering herself with the shroud and sat again on the grass. Bankostu understood the gesture as an quiet invitation to join her, so he enclosed the foreigner and it didn't take long to both of them were sitting in front of each other.
"What is going on?" He asked lightly.
The lass slowly breathed in and gazed at the lake, not saying anything.
"Crying in the dark doesn't suit you. Even knowing you for a short time I can tell." The mercenary leaned his body ahead, putting his hands over his own knees while analyzing the foreigner.
"I was not crying" She lied blatantly, making him chuckle. "Tell me something then." Since he was there and Ailyn wanted to change the subject anyway, it would be nice to satisfy her own curiosity. "What is it like to be dead?"
"Well, sincerely speaking?" He waited her nod to proceed his speech. "There's nothing on the other side. It's like to be engulfed by the darkness and an endless silence." Bankotsu rested his back on the grass. Ailyn looked at him unblinkingly, astonished by his spontaneity and carefree behavior.
"How did you and your friends die?" She murmured.
Bankotsu, who already has closed his eyes opened but one at first, gazing the lass, then he unsealed the other. Sitting again, his complexion got stern. The western woman insisted on retrieve the profundity of his gaze, yearning for an answer. So the mercenary told her how his band has lived in the past, he revealed details about massacres they performed and how the same warlords who once paid for their services conspired against the group and ended up cornering the seven men and coldly beheaded each one.
"It does not matter wherever corner of the world we are, people will always fear the strongest ones, or those who are different from the padrone". Ailyn sighed and looked at the moon shinning white above their heads.
"As far as I can see, you also have a story to tell. I've already told mine, so nothing more fair than you sharing yours". He smiled.
"Fair, you say" Lynnie rolled her eyes and crossed arms."Yet, this tale is pretty long, you might feel bored."
"I doubt anything related to you can make me feel bored, woman." Bankotsu said between brief giggles, not noticing how his words has disconcerted her.
"Well, if you say so..." Ailyn inhaled and then exhaled at once. "Alright, here we go" and she repeated the breathing in and out process.
"Come on!" He complained, already impatient.
"I got it!" The lass almost hissed, not enjoying the pressure, then she cleared her throat to start revealing her tale: "Well, as you can see, I am from a far away land, completely different from yours. My father has married with a woman pretty much younger than him and they had two daughters, twins. It happens that my mother has born with a special gift which was inherited from generation to generation, always to the firstborn child, and as my sister was the one who firstly saw the light of this world, this amazing power came with her and I have born common".
"Common?" He interposed instinctively, with widened azure eyes. Ailyn didn't give much attention to his astonishment and continued:
"My mother used to heal the sick, she made arid lands turn into fertile soils and thanks to that our people thrived. However, a talent like this would not remain unknown for so long, and soon powerful men heard rumors about her deeds. When they came to investigate the miracles my mother could work, they feared her powers and saw her as a dangerous witch". The more Ailyn dove in the story, more her gaze seemed to darken and her features grew stiffened. Still, she went on speaking, with bitterness overflowing between clenched teeth: "In the end, they sentenced her to die and people who once admired my mother for her acts just followed the procession to the lake, throwing rotten eggs and vegetables on her, shouting the most diverse and cruel curses while laughing, finding amusement on my mother's suffering, witnessing the executioner tie her arms and legs, then fill her pockets with stones and throw her into the water. From the distance, we had to watch her despair while trying to get rid of the ropes just to miserably fail. We could not hear her screams, but the bubbles forming in the waters' surface told us more than a thousand words. Then it suddenly stopped, her body ceased to move and soon the water was calm again, straight as a mirror. Everyone slowly moved away and my father wanted to get her body, but those men did not let him. They said my mother's body must remain in there to serve as an example." A resented, dry chuckle sounded from her lips, her sight stuck on the lake beside. Bankotsu couldn't take his eyes off the hardened lass.
"After such tragedy, we ran to a cottage isolated in the woods, far from the village." Ailyn said, her voice sounding deeper than usual. "After all, they considered my family cursed and were afraid to just pass by the side of any of us. To leave that place was the best decision my father could ever have made, for a while later my sister manifested the gift, we were little children by then... Annabelle revived a bird we have found while playing around the woods. She just embraced the tiny thing, swayed her body sometimes and the bird suddenly awoke and took flight. I think it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in my whole life". The lass sighed, a half smile formed in her face and a particular gleam enlightened her once resented turquoise orbs. "My father made business with a man and ceased to be a peasant to become a merchant. So, we managed to leave the countryside and moved from town to town for a while, living as nomads. I did not dislike this kind of life, you know? Finally we went to places where we were nobody's acquaintances, so no prejudice fell upon us, no judgement. Annabelle had to hide her powers of course, for us three to manage having a normal life. No one would understand, nor accept her gift, we thought... till we met Amelie in Paris." By then, her smile grew wider and her voice was pure velvet waving delicately in admiration. "Amelie was a gypsy who made a living of reading people's fortune on the lines of their hands. We found her on a square in front of Notre Dame cathedral"...
"Cath..." Bankotsu, quietly listening till then, tried to spell such odd, mysterious word. "Cathedral of what?" He grimaced, bewildering those weird nomenclatures.
"There are many magnificent buildings around the world, which perhaps you could compare with the temples in here. What a pity they were made for the adoration of an oppressor God. For the sake of this God people like me suffers so much..." Rage revolved inside her, provoking icy chills on her skin and a sense of pressure into her stomach. "If there is a bright side of coming here, is that in this land the worshipers of such God have not overcame people's thoughts yet. Because in the rest of the world I have known, they have spread like a disease, causing chaos wherever they step a foot on".
"What kind of god is that?" The mercenary was genuinely curious.
"The Christian God" her tongue clicked on her palate, guttural words poured down her crimson lips like poison as her hate released itself from the depths of her guts. "Well, as I was saying, Amelie and my father fell in love very fast, soon she began to come to our house frequently. My sister never liked her presence though, I believe she felt jealous because she was used to receive our father's attention almost exclusively for herself, so suddenly having to share it with another woman was something she was not prepared to".
"What about you?" He asked.
"I always liked Amelie, she was more a mother to me than my own." Ailyn told naturally.
"No, I mean, didn't you receive some attention from your father?"
"Oh..." First she shook her head, then chuckled briefly, not for joy but for the purest irony. "My father... I loved him very much. I did everything I could to get just a bit of his attention, but eventually he ended up dedicating to Annabelle all his affection and concern, for day and night he was worried about the danger of people discovering my sister's gifts. Since I was just an ordinary girl, he had not much to worry about me, even because I have always knew my way around. While Annabelle learned how to sew, sing, cook and all those skills women should develop – and my father spared no efforts to make her learn so she would look the more common as possible – I, on the other hand, developed some cleverness and survivor's instinct. I have never been naive, neither a dreamer, in my early age I was already worrying about finding out how I could take advantage of any situation"...
"So you were madly jealous of your sister". He concluded without thinking much.
"Any child in my place would feel jealous." Ailyn spat instantly. "But, above all, I admired my sister and wanted to be like her. And, when my father and Amelie got married, I received some affection only for me. Amelie saw something in me that my family has never noted before. Potential. With her, I came to learn that if we had not born with a power within, we can achieve it from external forces and that also deserves merit. She once has been ordinary, just like myself, yet in the prime of her youth, Amelie decided to join a coven of witches and that was how she gained the gift of sight. She could foresee others' future, and also cast some spells. She was so strong, maybe stronger than my mother even not having powers from birth. I knew I would be able to become a member of that coven too, all I needed was to come of age. I would not deny my powers like Annabelle did. I never wanted to be common, never felt like I had born to be so." Words cracked, trembling in her throat, as did the tiny moon reflecting in her eyes.
"You are anything but common." The comment slipped from his tongue. Ailyn smiled without being aware of it.
"For some years, we were happy. My father has gained a lot of gold and silver as a merchant and we all even moved to a villa in the kingdom of Spain, but when things start to go really well, they do not delay to fall down. Is it not?" One more bitter chuckle went out along with a blond eyebrow arching.
"Well, who am I to say the contrary?" He chuckled too, remembering his own biography.
"My father fell ill, it was a rare disease that would make him perish soon. No physician could help him with elixirs, they knew almost nothing about that sickness. Amelie convictly tried to convince my sister to use her gift to save our father, she did all she could, in any way you can imagine..." Then Ailyn growled. "But that stupid fool proceeded on insisting that she could not, saying that our father has forbidden her to do so. And he, on the verge of death because of that disease, kept telling he did not wish Annabelle to take the risk. Now, I ask you, if it was your father, and if you had the healing gift, would you abdicate to help him for fearing what could possibly happen if other people find out?!" Ailyn's voice raised to the point she was almost yelling, so intense was her fury. Before Bankotsu could respond, she resumed unburdening her anger: "Annabelle did nothing but smashing some little herbs to make teas and soups for him to swallow, it has sustained his life for a little longer, although it was not enough to save him and he eventually died. Then, I told Amelie about the day Annabelle has revived the bird and she, desperate, begged my sister to do something, she was our last hope!" Her breathing accelerated and the lass gasped in indignation, feeling like she was living that hell all over again. "That imbecile insisted that our stepmother has poisoned our father on purpose, to put her in that situation, but I doubt it! I saw Amelie's suffering, I witnessed how grief poured from her teary eyes! Annabelle refused to bring our father back to life, and in the middle of such despair and mourn, Amelie said to me she would revive him herself, at any cost, so she sneaked around every city's alley, seeking for prohibited ingredients to make a potion, and was followed by representatives of the Holy Inquisition. Not much time later, men of the Church appeared in front of our house to fetch Amelie and as she had already foreseen it would happen, she gave me her ring and told me something important..." The Red Rose slowly closed her eyes.
XXX
"Ailyn, my child, listen to me!" The woman held her hand firmly, the ring was hidden by the encounter of their palms. Knocks on the door made desperation grow even more into the blond girl's chest. "There is a way you can acquire your sister's powers. Pay attention though, for it is a road with no return".
"Please, tell me! She does not deserve to have them!" Ailyn cried of anger and sorrow.
"There is no time for words, take the book with a black leather cover, it is hidden inside the mattress of your father's bed! There you will find everything you need to know about my coven, and about what you must do!"
At last, the door was broken into, and the men wearing dark garments, with huge golden crosses embroidered on their chests took Amelie by her arms and dragged the woman out of the mansion. The precious ring laid between Ailyn's trembling fingers.
XXX
"I got the book and ran from the villa alongside my sister. To that point, I could barely look Annabelle in the eyes without thinking of killing her. We hid in the forest nearby, and as once we lived in a cottage inside the woods in our childhood, we knew how to take care of ourselves in the middle of nature. So we found a large tree hollow inside, we digged a whole on it's trunk and made it our secret spot for some days. In times when Annabelle was sleeping, I read every single line of that book. I learned every spell and what I had to do in order to seal the pact to gain the powers of a sorcerer from Amelie's occultist coven. I offered my very soul in exchange of a gift and the ring became mine." She lifted her hand to the mercenary, showing the vivid green shine of the jewel. It's glow reflected into the cobalt greedy gaze. "Unlike Amelie, that was a kind of prophetess, I have inherited powers from the underworld. I can manipulate anguished souls. Furthermore, I learned how to cast spells and even assimilated some silly tricks, like, for example, to communicate with anyone in whichever language they may speak, that is why you and I can understand each other so well. Annabelle certainly had a hard time studying this tongue." She laughed. To the man listening her story, her talents seemed quite relevant, at least his stunned complexion was showing that sort of feeling.
"And, you see, in the book I also understood what Amelie meant when she told me I could steal my sister's powers." The lass explained. "There was a spell that might be done when the Blood Moon is high in the sky. In a night like that I could eat her heart and absorb her strength".
"Gross!" Bankotsu narrowed his eyes while curling his lips, yet soon he laughed playfully.
"One month has passed and every night I looked to the sky, waiting for the moon to turn red." Ailyn went on speaking, not showing any embarrassment or amusement for his reaction. "I pretended to be friends with her, and Annabelle trusted me because she was an ingenue brat. That was reaping me from inside and I hated myself for having to play coy, yet it was a necessary evil." Her jaw clenched so hard that all words sounded tensed. "One day I decided to wear a cloak and go to town to know what has happened with Amelie, there I discovered she has been executed and if I still had any trace of affection for my sister within me, it completely vanished..." She paused to breathe, her throat felt like closing, with a knot forming inside. "Amelie was burned at the stake, it was also for Annabelle's sake! I say she is guilty because, if she had committed herself to save our father, Amelie would never chase for those ingredients, therefore she would not have been caught. We became orphans and stood all alone in the world because of Annabelle's cowardice. If I had the same skills as her, that tragedy would never have happened. That was when I got fully convinced such powers should belong to me, for they were useless on the hands of a person so weak of spirit. I had so much more to offer to the world than Annabelle..." Ailyn spat. "So, I came back to the forest already decided, but when I looked inside the hollow tree, what I have found was my book opened, thrown on the ground. She has read everything and was already aware of my intentions. The poor thing tried to run, though she knew that as twins we had a strong bond, and since I gained powers of my own, there were means I have learned to find her effortlessly. Ironically, my chase obligated Annabelle to use her powers to create a sort of translucent cape around her to turn herself invisible to me, for the amulet she used to wear, which once belonged to our mother, wasn't enough to conceal her energy from me at the time." All of sudden, Ailyn laughed. She laughed so hard that her body leaned ahead and one of her hands hit the earth. "Guess what has to happen for that idiot undo the cape and become traceable again?"
"What happened?" Bankotsu asked, muffling a laughter himself.
"That ignorant fool ended up in this wild land when hiding from me. She fell in love with a nobody, then came Naraku and killed the poor devil, stole his features and my sister, on the verge of grief, at last undid the spell which kept her safe because she knew that with my help there was a way to take that hanyo's life away. Even so, in the end she failed on trying to kill Naraku and still was not able to hide from me anymore".
"Wait a bit!" He shook his head, feeling confused with so much information thrown over him. Bankotsu couldn't understand how a subordinate would mention her boss in such a disrespectful way. Didn't she work for Naraku? The mercenary also couldn't assimilate very well the succession of events the lass has spat without caring about explaining them with details.
"That idiot abstained on using her powers to save our father, yet did not think twice before offering her very life to me for the sake of a silly infatuation!" Ailyn shouted as it was such an obvious matter. "You see? I cannot forgive her for that!"
"Then why don't you kill her once and for all? You already know where she is." It was so simple for him...
"Because that bitch spared my life when she had a chance to kill me!" Finally, the sadness that has haunted her before returned violently. Again, it was hard to make the sound to come out, her voice felt strangled, painful, her throat burned inside.
"So that's why you were crying..." He assumed in a low tone, strangely compassionate. Which gave Ailyn the courage to speak a bit more.
"Naraku wanted to get rid of me and tried to use her for achieve it, but Annabelle did not let herself being manipulated and spared me, even knowing of my intention to kill her... She helped me to escape!" Blue shivering eyes lowered down, facing her own skirt where her hands laid in fists, fingers squeezed the dark red fabric.
"Oi? You're saying that Naraku wanted you dead? But aren't you working for him?" The man stared at her, full of suspicion.
Ailyn took a look around, then dragged herself a bit closer to him, and resting a hand over his shoulder she whispered into his ear:
"Take care with Naraku, he is not someone you can trust..." that said, the Red Rose returned to where she was sitting before, acting naturally.
His dark, cobalt pools blinked in astonishment for the many confidences revealed, and for the recent advice spelled stealthily, like the lass suspected someone could be spying on them. For some instants, he gazed at her profoundly and didn't see the woman vacillate. Bankotsu almost questioned himself about Naraku's integrity, however, it never mattered to him the intentions behind their "contract". He wasn't aware of what kind of motives the western lass gave her master to put a price on her head and all of this was meaningless in the end. To the leader of Shichinintai, the only important thing was to be alive. Nothing could be more valuable than having a second chance to live, and he would rejoice it till the last second, as long as it lasted. A careless smile shone on his face.
"I don't give a shit." Bankostu answered and soon got up, stretching his arms. "What matters to me is that I'm alive and free to do whatever I want." With his back turned to her, before moving away, the mercenary looked at the lass again. "If you're not going to kill your sister, you should try to enjoy life as well. You're young, powerful and pretty, the world is yours for the taking, so stop wasting time whining for things you can't change!" One smiling eye, looking over his shoulder, was stuck on her.
"Oh..." Ailyn chuckled, surprised by the unexpected compliment. "I will think about it".
"Will you stay there?" He started to walk through the trail that would lead him back to their improvising camping spot.
"No, I am coming with you". She stood on her feet and reached him, so they walked side by side. From there, both didn't speak a single word, just looked at each other discretely sometimes and restrained the sudden will of laughing. Unexpectedly they opened their selves a bit and couldn't help but think about the weird conversation they just had.
Bankotsu found a comfortable position while laying on the grass, as for Ailyn it took more time to tranquilize her mind. Sitting in front of the fire pit, she observed the lad resting on the other side of the dancing flames. The lass found herself incapable to take her eyes off his figure again. He looked so serene, his chest raised and fell peacefully, in synchrony with his heavy breath. Even into his slumber, Bankotsu seemed to smile.
I am certain that when I die, I am going to a place far more hideous, Bankotsu... She concluded, at last staring at the greenish gleam of the gemstone on her ring. But I do not regret a thing. Then the pair of turquoises lift to the dark nocturnal sky, although melancholy twinkled inside the clear blueness, they were as hard as ever, like every single fiber of hers learned to be. Without any apparent reason, a most recent memory popped in her thoughts, stealing her attention so discretely that none of her features have changed.
XXX
Why did you show me your past with your sister?" Priestess Kikyo asked without trying to conceal her bewilderment.
"I do not know" She chuckled, pretending to be indifferent. "Maybe I just wanted to share this with someone. I have never spoke about my story with Annabelle to anyone before, so you can feel yourself privileged for it".
"Do you feel guilty?" Calm, the miko questioned, her gaze was still caught by the liquid revolving inside the caldron.
"Guilty? Of what?" Ailyn's eyes widened.
"I doubt you have shown all of this just to share your past with me. You know I tried to murder your sister, just like you tried yourself, and still you wanted to make me watch all those memories reflected in this watery mirror, you made me witness every joy and sorrow you two have endured. Do you feel guilty for having wished your sister's death?" She insisted, then looking in the blue eyes sparkling confusion.
"I have no regrets!" The foreigner shouted.
"You can lie to yourself, but not to me. I know you have shown me those things because you do not want to see your sister dying by my hands". Kikyo didn't get intimidated by her little scene.
"But of course, because her life belongs to me! Therefore, I am the only one who can take it!"
XXX
But I am not sure if I still want this, Annabelle... Ailyn sighed, gazing at the stars painted bright on the firmament, while Bankotsu's breath squealed low, slowly. Even if absorbing your power is the only salvation for my soul. Her long, golden eyelashes sealed and she finally laid on her side, resting her head over her hands. Luck of you I have found out about Shikon no Tama. If I live forever, there will be no need to be sent to hell...
To be continued...

Well, this chapter ended up longer than I expected, but I thought it had to be this way. Now you know a little about Ailyn's side of the story. Oh, and all Ailyn's bitter comments about Christianity don't reflect my opinion. Please, I ask to any Christian, Catholic or Protestant readers to not take her criticism to the heart, it's the twisted manner the character found to deal with her trauma on this fictional story :'(

See you next time! Kissuuus! ;)
