Chapter 7: Second Thoughts
A/N: Kikyo is afraid of her feelings for Sesshomaru. She isn’t quite sure if she’s ready to let go of Inuyasha and fall in love with someone else yet. Will she overcome her fear? Sorry it took a little while to get this posted, hopefully it was worth the wait! I still do not own Inuyasha!
Kikyo sat at her vanity as the two female servants moved around her hectically trying to prepare her for the banquet that Sesshomaru had informed her of. She was dressed in the form fitting silk emerald green kimono with the white sakura blossom pattern around the cuffs of the sleeves and along the bottom hemline. Kikyo was pulled to her feet as the servant on her right tied the solid white silk obi tightly around her waist. In fact she had tied the obi a bit too tightly for Kikyo’s tastes but Kikyo remained silent.
Her brown eyes returned to the mirror of the vanitysee see that her long ebony tresses had been twisted into a very intricate braided bun. Once she had been misted with a heavenly smelling mixture of gardenia blossoms and fresh rain the servants bowed to her before leaving. A knock on the door startled her. “Who’s there?”
“Lord Sesshomaru, may I come in?”
“Yes.” Kikyo rushed over to the door and opened it hastily. Her brown eyes widened at the sight of the handsome youkai. He was dressed in elegant looking crisp white robes with his black armor chplatplate and a blood red silk sash around his waist. Attached to the sash was a matching blood red scabbard which held both the Tokijin and the Tenseiga. Sesshomaru’s amber eyes swept over Kikyo’s body taking in her beauty.
Kikyo stood rigid before him feeling a knot of nervousness beginning to form in the pit of her stomach. His silence was becoming overwhelming as she waited for him to speak. When he made no move to speak she could no longer hold her tongue. “Semarumaru, aren’t you going to say anng? ng? Do I look that awful?”
“No Kikyo, you don’t look awful. On the contrary you look incredible.” Kikyo felt her face become hot as her blush spread across her cheeks. The demon lord offered his arm to Kikyo and she took it willingly. “Are you ready?”
“Yes.” Kikyo allowed herself to be led down the stairs by the demon lord. They stopped in front of two large wooden doors with smooth pewter handles. “Why are we stopping Sesshomaru?”
“There is something you need to understand first Kikyo.”
“And that would be?”
“You will be the only human in that room aside from the servants. Do not speak unless spoken to.” She nodded. Having said that Sesshomaru opened the door and allowed Kikyo to walk in ahead of him. He led her to two chairs at the head of the table. Kikyo gave him a small smile as he pulled out her chair for her to sit down.
Sesshomaru seated himself beside the priestand and turned his eyes toward the door when a servant announced the first guests. “May I present Lord Kagoaki and Lady Inkara of the Southern lands?” Lord Kagoaki was a large cat youkai with long ebony hair and ice blue eyes. He had a gorgeous blue starburst marking on his forehead and two thin black stripes on either side of his face.
Lady Inkara was a much smaller cat youkai with long reddish brown tresses that fell to her waist and were thick and curly. Her eyes were a beautiful jade green and she had a pale green starburst marking on her forehead paired with two thin silver stripes on either side of her beautiful face. Atop her head was an elegant platinum tiara embellished with many diamonds. It was clear to Kikyo that Inkara was Kagoaki’s mate when her eyes discovered that the female cat youkai was very noticeably pregnant. “Hello Lord Sesshomaru, you remember my mate Inkara?”
“Yes, hello Lord Kagoaki, Lady Inkara. This is Kikyo.” Kagoaki and Inkara seated themselves in the chairs that were reserved for the lord and lady of the southern lands.
The servant announced the next guests as they arrived. “May I present to you Lord Shiryu and Lady Aneesah of the Northern lands?” Lord Shiryu was a large and muscularly built fox youkai. He had long red hair and soft brown eyes. There was a red full moon marking on his forehead. Lady Aneesah had long dark brown hair that was sleek and shiny and fell to her waist. She had a silver full moon marking on her forehead and the most beautiful violet eyes Kikyo had ever seen.
Lord Shiryu and Lady Aneesah took their seats next to Lord Kagoaki and Lady Inkara. The servant finally announced the last of the dinner guests. “May I present Lady Samara of the Eastern lands?” In walked a beautiful female dog demon with long honey blonde hair that fell to her waist in large curls. She had the same crescent moon marking on her forehead as Sesshomaru’s but hers was a pale lavender. Lady Samara had two thin silver stripes on either side of her face and the most gorgeous gray eyes. On her head was a thin platinum tiara covered in diamonds.
Samara crossed the room gracefully and took her seat which happened to be next to Sesshomaru. “Hello Lord Sesshomaru, you’re looking handsome as always.” She didn’t even acknowledge Kikyo.
“Hello Lady Samara, I would like you to meet Kikyo.” Samara frowned at Kikyo and then shifted her gaze back to Sesshomaru.
“Who is she?”
“She is my guest.”
“Oh Sesshomaru, don’t tell me you’re thinking of taking a human as your mate?”
“My personal affairs are none of your business Samara, now let us dine.” The food was brought out and everyone began eating. The meal was mostly ate in silence except for a bit of friendly conversation made between Kikyo and Inkara. After the dinner was over Lord Sesshomaru and Kikyo stood at the front door of the palace to see the lords and ladies out. Lady Samara was the last to leave much to Kikyo’s annoyance.
“You know you really should reconsider your choice in mates. Sesshomaru, mate with me so that our territories may be combined. I can give you a stronger heir than that human wench ever could.”
“I think it’s best if you leave now Samara, I bid you goodnight.”
“Have it your way Sesshomaru, marry a weak human and let her be your undoing, just like your father’s human mate was his undoing!” Sesshomaru gently pushed Samara out the door with a low warning growl. He closed the door in her face before she could say anything else.
“I apologize for Samara’s mouth Kikyo, she knows not when to keep it shut.”
“It’s alright. Sesshomaru?”
“Yes?”
“Why was Samara making the assumption that I’m your mate? I’m not your mate.”
“Not yet, I have not formally made a claim on you.”
“A claim?”
“Yes, I must declare a claim on you and begin to court you.”
“But you’re not going to do that are you?”
“It’s not entirely out of the question.” Kikyo’s heart fluttered nervously in her chest. “Would you care to join me in the sitting room Kikyo?”
Kikyo did not want to listen to more of Sesshomaru’s talk of courting her so she quickly yawned feigning exhaustion. “I am so tired Sesshomaru, perhaps another time?” He looked a little disappointed but then quickly disguised it.
“Yes, another time.” Before Kikyo could say anything Sesshomaru had scooped her up into his arms. The tai youkai carried the priestess to her chambers. Before setting her on her feet she felt him press his nose into her neck. “You smell wonderful Kiky
“Sesshomaru?” The tai youkai allowed his lips to glide along the priestess’s neck. It sent a tingling sensation down Kikyo’s spine causing her to jump from Sesshomaru’s arms.
“Is something the matter Kikyo?”
“I really must be going to bed, I’m very tired. Please, goodnight Sesshomaru.” Sesshomaru sighed and quickly masked his annoyance with her reluctance to open up to him.
“Very well, I shall see you in the morning then.”
“Yes in the morning.” Kikyo quickly closed the door to her chambers. She pressed her back against it and sank to to the floor. ‘Oh Kami, what in the seven hells is wrong with me? Why am I so afraid of my feelings for Sesshomaru?’ Kikyo climbed to her feet and padded to her bed. Not even bothering to take off her kimono she lay down.
Her brown eyes closed and she quickly fell asleep. The priestess’s dreams were haunted by images of the day she tried to kill Inuyasha. Kikyo tossed and turned as she relived that awful day while she slept. She cried out for Inuyasha as she watched her sacred arrows fly and pin him to the Goshinboku tree. “INUYASHA!! NO!!”
In the next room Sesshomaru could hear Kikyo’s cries. He scowled when he heard his half breed brother’s name. ‘ The wench is dreaming about my bastard half breed brother! Does she still love that fool? Curse that wench for refusing to let go ofyashyasha!’ Back in Kikyo’s chambers she had begun sweating from the intense nightmare. The horrible memory began anew much to the raven haired maiden’s dismay.
Kikyo ran through the forest bleeding badly from the fatal wound that had been inflicted on her right shoulder. The crisp white sleeve of her robes had turned a dark crimson from her blood that had soaked it. She chased after the retreating hanyou who had stolen her heart along with the sacred jewel. Kikyo notched the sacred arrow that would seal her beloved to the Goshinboku tree. She pulled back on her bow and let the arrow fly. The all tamilamiliar and callous words rang out from her mouth. “ Die Inuyasha!” Her brown eyes narrowed as she watched the sacred arrow pierce Inuyasha’s chest and seal him to the tree.
Kikyo spent the whole night reliving the day that she had tried to kill her beloved and then lost her own life as well. The sun had just peeked over the horizon when Kikyo watched the sacred arrow pierce Inuyasha’s chest and seal him to the Goshinboku tree for what seemed like the millionth time. She screamed out in a strangled cry that was enough to make one’s blood run cold in their veins. “NO!!! INUYASHA!!!”
Sesshomaru barged into Kikyo’s chambers and strode over to her bed. He grabbed her shoulders and shook her roughly. Kikyo was startled awake and found herself staring up into two pools of molten amber. In her dream clouded state of mind she mistook Sesshomaru for Inuyasha. “Inu...Yasha?”
“How dare you mistake me for that worthless half breed!” Her brown eyes widened and she shot up in bed.
“Sesshomaru! What are you doing here?”
“You were screaming at the top of your lungs and it was unbearable.”
“Oh I must have been dreaming. I’m sorry, did I wake you?”
“No I was already awake. Tell me Kikyo, what were you dreaming about?”
“The day that I sealed Inuyasha to the Goshinboku tree with my sacred arrow.”
“I see. Why would you be dreaming about such a terrible memory?”
“That day has plagued me ever since I was brought back by that witch Urasue! I tried to kill the man that I was in love with, you don’t just forget that Sesshomaru!”
“It’s time to move on Kikyo. Inuyasha has moved on with his life, he’s proven that hasn’t he?”
“Yes I suppose he has. Why do you care anyway?”
“Because Kikyo, I have grown to care for you a great deal. I want to help you move on.”
“Help me how?”
“By showing you just how much I care for you. Kikyo, I wish to declare claim to you.”
“What? Are you saying that you want me to be your mate?”
“Yes, I wish for you to be the future lady of the Western lands.”
“I-”
“Say that you will accept my claim Kikyo?” Images of her sealing Inuyasha to the Goshinboku tree flashed through her mind quickly. Kikyo squeezed her eyes shut and turned away from Sesshomaru quickly.
“No! I can’t do that!”
“Why? Why won’t you let yourself care about me?”
“Because I don’t want to do to you what I did to Inuyasha all those years ago!”
“You won’t!”
“Sesshomaru I tried to kill Inuyasha because of a lie that Naraku told!”
“Kikyo I’m not my brother and I shall not fall victim to Naraku’s deceitful ways!”
“Sesshomaru please, I beg you, don’t make me go through something that painful again!” The tai youkai gritted his teeth as he tried to keep his composure. “Sesshomaru, will you please just leave me alone?”
“If that’s what you wish?”
“Yes it is.” He nodded and turned to leave.
“A servant will come for you when breakfast is ready.”
“Thank you.” Kikyo blinked and felt the tears begin spilling from her eyes when she heard her chamber door close signaling the demon lord’s exit. She cried until her eyes had no more tears left to shed. Kikyo was falling in love with Sesshomaru but she was so afraid of the past repeating itself that she didn’t dare tell him. She could not bear it if she had to watch another man that she cared about die because of her. The priestess decided that she would push those thoughts out of her mind. Perhaps if she ignored them then she wouldn’t feel them. Plastering a smile on her pretty face she warmly greeted the servant who had come to summon her for breakfast.
