Chapter Seven:
Kyo’s Deception
Blinking, Kyo had to remember whose body he had choto
to
possess... but then he had to remember why he had decided to possess a
body in the first place.
Kagura.
“Where’s that witch?”
Kyo asked, surprised when his words came out in Kagome’s voice.
“I’m over here, you foolish girl. Are you afraid for your friend’s soul?”
“She doesn’t know that I’m in Kagome’s body! Hehe, then again, none of them do!” Kyo thought, shaking his head to clear his
mind.
“Uh, K-chan, are you all right? You never answered Inu-Yasha.”
Tora asked.
“Where did Kagome’s bow get to?”
Everyone around her blinked.
“Excuse me?”
“Give me the thricebedamned bow!”
Tora held out the bow and the quiver of arrows, which this
new Kagome immediately snatched.
Kaede came up to the group, looking into Kagome’s eyes, “Her
soul has changed.”
“What?!” Inu-Yasha
exclaimed, worry etched onto his features, “But it can’t change... can
it?”
Tora gasped and gripped Kagome’s shoulders, “K-K-Kyo-sama?”
The Kagome-in-question glared up at Tora and spoke... using
Kyo’s voice, “You just can’t pass up an opportunity to rob me of my pride, can
you?”
Inu-Yasha, Miroku, Sango, Shippo, and even Kaede stared
openmouthed at ‘Kagome’.
“What did you do to her?!”
Inu-Yasha yelled, taking his turn at grabbing Kagome’s shoulders.
The glare Kyo gave Inu-Yasha was the same one Kagome would
normally have given him, “Relax, would you?
Call it a rental.”
Taking the chance to escape while they were all confused, Kyo
slung the quiver over his back and gripped the bow in heft eft hand. It felt odd to be in a girl’s body, but Kyo
found there were two things that were hardest to manage: Kagome’s skirt, and
Kagome’s shoes. Normally, Kyo tried to
never bother with shoes, and he certainly didn’t wear skirts often
enough to be familiar with them.
Other than that, anything else about Kagome’s body wasn’t so
different than what he had to put up with on a daily basis. He’d dressed as a woman before... if only
for ten minutes of his friend’s amusement and shock. Kyo smiled at the memory.
“Oh yes, that was fun... but I don’t need to be thinking
of my memories lest Kagome’s mind suddenly decide that it wants whatever
my mind can tell it. She doesn’t need
to know exactly who I am just now. The
damn kit already knows my minor secret, as does that healer. I’m sure the one Inu-Yasha has guessed it as
well, for if his ears give anything away, he looks like he’d be good at
smelling things like that.”
Rea>Reaching back Kyo grabbed an arrow, strung it onto the bow as
he ran, and fired, hoping that he wouldn’t have to use any more magic where it
wasn’t necessary.
But when was Kyo ever right?
Kagura chuckled as she flicked her fan and sent his arrow
veering in the wrong direction.
“And just where were you aiming, Girl? Normally your arrows at least try to
purify my wind. Are you finally
realizing that there’s no way for you to ever match Kikyo in strength
and ability?”
Kyo blinked, “Kikyo?
Who the hell is that?”
It was Kagura’s turn to be confused, “Your incarnation. The one whose soul is in your body. The woman who also pines for Inu-Yasha’s
love.”
“So Inu-Yasha must be the one Yuka and Eri call ‘that
double-crossing punk’,” Kyo thought, a smile coming to his lips, “stupid
wench! Controllers of the Wind never
were very smart! If I’m Kagome,
then the moon is black, the night sky is white, the stars are green, and the
grass is pink!”
“What are you spouting off now, you stupid Girl?”
“Quit calling Kagome stupid, for she is anything but!” Kyo demanded, an arrow already knocked on
Kagome’s bow.
Learning from his previous mistake, Kyo decided not to loose
a plain arrow, for Kagura would surely just knock it away again. This time, Kyo summoned a spell that drained
no power from him, and he could see it starting to take shape just by thinking
about it.
Closing his eyes and summoning the spell that had been known
to him since the time he could speak, Kyo reopened his eyes to find the four
strings of fire twisting themselves around him, just as they always did, as
though glad to be summoned by him again.
Concentrating on all fibers of fire at once, Kyo slowly wove
them into the arrow, making sure that none of the threads lashed out and burnt
the very thing he was trying to conduct them into.
Finally, Kyo was left with a normal-looking arrow with red
weaving patterns dancing across the shaft.
Kyo smiled, knowing that this arrow would never stray from its target,
for he had commanded it not to. If the
arrow failed him, he would make true his threat to lower it into water.
Kyo took a moment to glance at Kagura’s face. On it was surprise, and perhaps even
admiration... he couldn’t be sure.
“Do you really think that just because you have charged that
arrow with fire energy it will strike me?”
Still smiling, Kyo took careful aim, though he really didn’t
need to.
“As a matter of fact, Kagura of the Wind, I do.” Kyo said, raising his bow and firing the
arrow into the air.
While he had Kagura and the others looking up, Kyo held out
his right hand and began running towards Kagura. A small part of his aura materialized, extending in all the right
places to become his favorite sword.
He charged Kagura, dodged unnecessarily to the side, and
jumped in the air, throwing his sword as he did so.
The sword was spinning in the air, once again assuming the
pattern of a boomerang, slashing at Kagura’s arms and torso. The sword came back to him, and just as
Kagura was about to throw him to China with her fan, the arrow with its fire
weavings came down, point first, and struck the ground at Kagura’s feet.
For a moment, all was still.
Then Kyo remembered what he needed. Putting the bow across his back, his sword still held in his
right hand, Kyo smiled and winked at the wind witch, causing Kagura to become
confused.
At his wink, the arrow sent the four embedded threads of fire
around Kagura’s body. They would have
engulfed her completely had she not had enough sense to pluck one of the
feathers from her hair and use it to escape.
“This is far from over!”
She called, her burnt kimono still turning to ashes and drifting through
the air behind her.
Everyone rushed over to Kyo, all of them asking questions
that he could not answer at the moment, for the ground was suddenly shaky. Then the ground did a very nice thing: it
rose up to greet him as he closed his eyes.
“Kyo-sama! Kyo-sama,
are you all right?” Tora asked, pulling
Kagome’s body across his lap.
Inu-Yasha glared at him, “And just what do you think you’re doing?”
“For the moment, this isn’t K-chan; this is Kyo-sama.”
Kaede turned to Shippo, “Go check on Kyo’s body, Shippo.”
“Right!”
Shippo turned and began running towards Kaede’s hut and
disappeared inside. He came back out a
few minutes later, flashing Kaede a thumbs-up.
“Tora, I would hand Kagome over to Inu-Yasha if I were ye,
for that is Kagome as of now.”
Tora was taken aback and was even more surprised, as was
everyone else, as Inu-Yasha took Kagome from his lap, carrying her bridal style
towards Kaede’s hut.
Two hours later…
They were all around the fire once again. Kagome sat in Inu-Yasha’s lap, for he
insisted on not letting her out of his sight lest she be possessed once again
by another man’s soul.
Coughing sounded from the next room. Kyo had woken up a few minutes ago with a
fever and Kaede was tending to him, and also not letting anyone visit him.
Kaede came out from behind the curtain, Kyo in tow wrapped in
what seemed like four layers of blankets.
Only his face was visible, and if that were any indication of his
health, then he must have been doing pretty well.
Kyo’s face had regained most of its color and there were no
longer dark circles under his eyes as there had been when Kagome had seen him
last.
“Hey Kyo-kun,” Kagome said softly, “how are you feeling?”
He put on a tired smile, “Hot. Exhausted. Dirty.”
“The first two I can understand, Kyo-sama, but why the
last?” Tora asked, standing to help
walk his friend towards the fire.
Kyo looked at Tora, “Do you recall the last time I had a good bath?”
Tora’s nose crinkled, “Ah, that’s right. It’s been so long, I can’t even remember
what day it was.”
“I think it was a Thursday... no, maybe Saturday? Ah well, the point is, I need to get
clean. I spent most of my time out of
my own body and in someone else’s.
Not implying that your body is dirty, Kagome-san, merely that it was
very..... different for me to be in your body.”
Right then, Kagome had the strangest feeling that Kyo was
hiding something from her, “Kyo-kun?”
“Yes?” Kyo asked, a
little quicker than normal.
“Do you have a sister?”
Kyo’s face went from confused to surprised to saddened, “What
makes you think that?”
“I used to know a girl named Leota Ookamia Usuya. Is she related to you?”
Kyo forced a chuckle, “Do you not think so? Please, Kagome-san, for two people to have
the same middle and last name and not be related would be unheard of. Especially to our family. In answer to your question, yes. Leota-chan was my sister.”
“Was?” Kagome
questioned.
Kyo sighed, “Leota-chan.... died a few years ago. Six to be exact. I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Kagome-san.”
Kagome’s face went pale, “She... died? B-but I don’t understand. Ota-chan can’t be dead! She can’t be! She promised she’d come back!”
“I know she did,” Kyo said, kneeling down and taking Kagome’s
hands in his own, purposefully ignoring Inu-Yasha’s growl, “before she died,
all Ota-chan could talk about was how she’d never be able to keep her promise
to her K-chan. She talked about you
nonstop, Kagome-san, up until her last breath.”
Tears spilled down Kagome’s cheeks and Kyo wiped them away
with his thumb, “How did she die, Kyo-kun?”
Kyo shook his head, “I shall tell you not how she died,
Kagome-san, but instead how she lived.
However, that tale will have to wait, for Kaede-sama is coming close to
smacking me over the head for delaying her orders to bathe and eat a full
meal. Are you going to be all right
until I get back?”
“Of course she will be,” Inu-Yasha interjected before Kagome
could get a word out, “she’s got me.”
“That’s good to know, Inu-Yasha. I’m glad that Kagome-san has someone like you to watch over her.”
“Uh, Kyo-sama?”
Kyo turned to face Tora, “What is it?”
“Kagome would rather you called her K-chan instead of
Kagome-san. Could you do that?”
Startled by Tora’s question, Kyo nodded and looked to Kagome
after reassembling his wits, “Of course I can.
In fact, I am honored that you would allow me to call you such to your
face. Thank you, K-chan.”
Kagome smiled, “You’re welcome.”
Before he knew it, Kyo was being nearly dragged by Kaede to a
hot spring where he could bathe and relax for as long as he wanted.
Kaede stood next to him, an expectant look on her face,
“Well?”
“Well what?” Kyo
asked, shifting his weight nervously.
“Aren’t ye going in?”
“Not with you standing over me, watching me like a hawk.”
“Please, ’tis nothing I haven’t seen before.”
“No.”
With this, Kaede shrugged, grabbed a corner of the blankets
that surrounded Kyo’s otherwise nude body, pulled, and watched as Kyo was sent
flying into the warm water.
Kaede didn’t have long to wait until the wet mass that was
once Kyo came spluttering to the surface.
Arms crossed on his chest.
“What was that for?!” He asked, his voice sounding
shrill to his own ears.
Kaede smiled, “My, my, I have not seen a spell such as the
like that you wear in many years. What
is its’ name?”
“It’s the ‘Changeling’ spell.”
“And now, Child, what is your name?”
“Why should I tell you?
You’ll just tell K-chan who I am!”
“It’s a little late for that.” Came a voice from behind Kaede, who turned to look.
Kagome stood behind Kaede, a stern look on her face. She marched to the edge of the hot spring
and glared at the wet figure.
“K-Kagome...”
“Don’t even start with me!
Who are you?” Kagome
yelled.
One tanned hand brushed the wet strands of hair from a
finely-featured face, and then both arms uncrossed themselves to drop to either
side of slender hips.
What Kagome saw there wasn’t any different than when Kagome
herself looked in the mirror.
Kyo was a girl.
“My name, Higurashi Kagome-san, you once knew. In fact, you knew me so well, Kagome-san,
that you called me sister once, and even then it was a mere ten minutesore
ore
I left you for what I thought then was forever.”
“No... you can’t be...”
“It was not I that perished, but my brother. I am Leota Ookamia Usuya, the once
best friend of Higurashi Kagome, my sister by heart and mind rather than by
blood.”
