Poison Chapter 7
The next day, Sango walked as far away from Miroku as she could get without leaving the group entirely. He had tried to speak with her, but she had told him to leave her alone and not bother. InuYasha asked him what he had done to her the night before, but he didn’t have the emotional strength to defend himself. Not that he knew what he would say. He was grateful that she hadn’t told anyone what he told her, but at the same time, it would have been easier to just leave if everyone hated him the way she did now.
Kagome was giving him a cold shoulder because she was concerned over Sango, InuYasha ignored him as usual and Shippo kept harassing him to explain what had happened. He was surprised that Sango grew tired of it before he did.
“Drop it, Shippo,” she snapped, causing the fox to run and hide behind InuYasha’s hakama leg. InuYasha just rolled his eyes and told the kit it was his own fault. The next few days showed no improvement, but Miroku didn’t leave. He woke up on the fourth night to run into the forest and throw up for a half hour before going back to bed, but didn’t run to Sesshomaru. It was easier, with Sango knowing and disapproving, for him to fight it. He saw her watching him return, but he gave her no sign that he had. He could only say he was sorry so many times…
The next morning, he awoke with his head in her lap, startled. Then he realized it wasn’t morning, but late afternoon. He tried to move, but his muscles cramped and convulsed against his will. He was shaking uncontrollably and the smell of vomit was clinging to him. Sweat dripped painfully into his eyes and he felt like he was burning up from the inside. Some new level of pain raced through him like a river and he screamed. Sango brushed the hair back from his forehead and he realized that she was crying.
He bit back the next outcry and, unfortunately, his tongue with it. The taste of blood filled his mouth and his stomach lurched. He rolled over and found he had obviously been doing this all day when he stuck his left hand into a pile of his own sick. He threw up more, but only water came out and he was confused. He didn’t remember drinking any.
“I’m sorry, Miroku,” Sango whispered. “I didn’t realize that it was this bad. You only said…”
“Please don’t apologize, Sango, you have done no wrong,” he said, his throat and voice raw. Then everything changed and he was in her lap again, but it was evening. She was clutching his robes and begging him to stop. “Stop what?” he whispered.
“Miroku?” she asked, opening her swollen eyes.
“Hey, can you hear us?” InuYasha asked, his head coming into view over Sango’s shoulder.
“I thought you were dead for sure,” Shippo said, gripping his sleeve. Miroku saw tears drying on the fox’s face. He could smell blood and bile and he touched his face, finding it coming from his own nose and mouth.
“What happened?” Miroku whispered.
“You started convulsing and off and on, you were screaming,” Kagome said quietly from his left. That’s when he realized that only his right eye was open. He tried to open his left, but it wouldn’t cooperate. He frantically reached up and clawed at it, but his hand was snatched away by Sango. His eye cracked open and he blinked until he could see from it. He looked at his hand and there was dried blood under his fingernails. “You were throwing up so hard that blood came out,” Kagome explained. “Even from your eye.” The pain from earlier jolted deep within Miroku’s bones and he cried out, sitting up violently. “You shouldn’t move,” Kagome said, but Miroku climbed to his feet anyway. He had to get to Sesshomaru. He had to make the pain stop. He was dying. He didn’t want to die in this pain. It had to stop.
InuYasha grabbed his arm and he lashed out, striking the hanyo down. InuYasha jumped back. “What the hell was that for?” he yelled.
“Don’t touch me! Stay away from me!” Miroku screamed, then turned and ran. He ran for a while before Sango caught up to him on Kirara, calling out for him to stop. “I can’t! It’s killing me! Leave me alone!” Miroku yelled back, but came crashing to a halt when Kirara bit into his robes. ‘Fine,’ Miroku thought, stepping out of his robes. ‘She can have them.’
“Please, Miroku!” Sango cried out. “Don’t do this!”
“Please, Sango,” Miroku cried out, holding his hand out to her where she stood in front of him. “Please, you don’t know what it—” the pain cut him off and he doubled over.
“And you think that his poison will make it better?” Sango asked.
”Yes,” Miroku hissed. She must have seen something terrifying in his eyes, because hers filled with tears and she backed away. She clenched her fists and glared at the ground.
“Get on Kirara,” she ordered. Miroku started to protest, but she cut him off. “We’ll take you to him, if that’s what you want.”
“Sango…”
“Get on Kirara!” Sango yelled. Miroku looked at the cat, who was staring at Sango in what appeared to be horror. He obeyed, climbing onto the furry back. Sango climbed up in front of him, handing him back the robes he had dropped. He clutched them to himself, but didn’t put them on. He held onto Sango’s waist lightly to keep from falling off and before he knew it, though it felt like he had been in agony for hours, he could see Sesshomaru. The youkai looked up at them and Kirara flew lower. His hand went to the hilt of Toukijin for a moment, but he released it when Miroku made eye contact with him.
Kirara landed and Sango shoved him off, hard. He hit the ground on his shoulder and rolled, barely able to tell one pain from another. He looked up at Sesshomaru’s face and couldn’t read it at all. He trembled and tried to reach for him, but he felt sick and ended up rolling onto all fours to heave empty.
“There is blood again,” Sesshomaru murmured and Miroku realized he was kneeling by him. He turned his face into the youkai’s and fell back, remembering that Sango was there. Sesshomaru’s eye twitched and he turned to look at the demon exterminator.
“He wants you,” she hissed and Sesshomaru’s eyes went wide.
“I’m dying,” Miroku pleaded, shaking violently. Sesshomaru’s hand went to his shoulder, touching the bruise, but the tremors didn’t stop this time.
“You will die if I do what you’re asking,” he said. “I will not kill you.”
“What do you care?” Sango snapped. Sesshomaru turned to her. “You’ve been doing this to him… You’re the reason he’s like this.” Miroku saw Sesshomaru flinch and he wondered what it meant.
“You brought him here,” Sesshomaru pointed out.
“Go, Sango,” Miroku begged.
“No,” she said. “If you’re going to kill yourself, then I’m going to be here while you die,” she said, falling to her knees and gripping his wrist. Miroku rolled his head away from her.
“Please,” he whispered. He wasn’t sure to whom, but he felt the warmer body of Sesshomaru come close and there was no pain this time when the poison entered his skin.
