He watched as she flung herself into his brother's arms, squelching the odd emotions that rose inside him as they laughed together. The tears that slipped from her eyes were happy once, he knew. Happiness that she could see the hanyou again...
"Oh my gosh! I can't believe... Is it really... Inuyasha!!"
He couldn't help but smile. What was it about this girl that reminded him so much of... No. He wouldn't allow his thoughts to go in that direction. Not tonight. He would simply give in to the girl's undeniable appeal. He would stay, if only to talk with her as they'd done before. How he'd enjoyed that time they had...
"Sesshoumaru! You did this for me?"
Her body was warm, he noticed as she pulled him into an embrace. Her scent was a welcome distraction, soft and sweet and, dare he say it, alluring...
"Yea," his brother grunted. "The old dog just came out of nowhere, kidnapped me and Kimi, and dragged us all here."
She looked down at the little girl for the first time. "Kimi?" she asked.
The child was a spitting image of her father. Golden eyes and silvery white hair, the undying proof of their great Father's blood. She looked shyly up at Kagome, giggling as the young woman bent and tickled her lightly.
"My daughter," he explained, beaming with pride as he patted the little girl's head affectionately. "My first born."
Amaru watched the girl's hand stiffen imperceptibly, holding his tongue in check as she stared into the child's face with an empty gaze.
"She's beautiful," Kagome breathed.
"Spitting image of her mom," Inuyasha went on, turning his attention back to the young miko. "What about you, Kagome? It's been so long, but you haven't changed a bit. What's it been like on this side?"
"Oh, it's fine!" she gushed, averting her eyes as Inuyasha drew close. "Nothing's changed, really. It's been what? Less than a year now? Then again, it's definitely more than that for you, isn't it...? Enough time to... start a family... at least..."
Amaru frowned. It was a valiant performance, he knew. Though the centuries had dimmed his half-brother's senses to nearly that of a human's, his had remained at their strongest. He could smell the tinge of sadness on the girl, the aroma of regret, and narrowed his eyes at the obvious lie.
Jealousy, he thought to himself as he watched her. So... she holds feeling for the boy even now...
"Misako would have come, but she's six months along," he heard the hanyou explain. "She was glad to get rid of us, though. Bet she's at home soaking up the peace and quiet."
He remained silent as the girl forced a laugh. His brother was oblivious of the pain she felt...
"Well.. oh!" she turned, gesturing to her mother and brother. "You know mom and Souta. And I've introduced you, Sessho- I mean Amaru. This is my brother Souta. And that's our cat Buyo."
The little boy smiled at him shyly, his attention more focused on the little girl at Inuyasha's side. "You wanna play with Buyo?" he asked her, holding out the cat and blushing brightly.
The girl looked up at her father and he nodded his consent. "Ok!" she squealed, running to follow the feline as they scrambled back into the house.
"I guess I never saw you as the type to settle..." Kagome laughed, memories of their caustic little love triangle still fresh in her mind.
He grinned sheepishly. "Yeah... Still can't figure it out to this day. Damned women..."
The silence was deafening. Amaru took that moment to invite himself in, bowing to Ms.Higurashi and offering a hand as they slipped into the house.
"It was a long time after you left, Kagome," Inuyasha sighed, beckoning for her to sit beside him as he lowered himself to the porch steps. "It'd been a long time since I found somebody who cared about me the way you did. And it took a hell of a lot to let myself give in. By that time, I never thought I'd see you again..."
She rested her head against the banister, looking off into the distance.
"She's lucky to have you," she whispered, wrapping her arms loosely around her knees.
He put out an arm, tossing it casually across her upper back and pulling her head onto his shoulder.
"You know... if you ever wanted to fool around for old times' sake..."
Her cheeks blazed, her spine going rigid as she glared at him from the corner of her eye.
"Oh no you don't!" he exclaimed, waving a finger at her as she was about to speak. "I know that look. I was just kidding, dammit! And besides, it's useless. You can't 'sit' the hell out of me anymore. I can thank Shippou and his meddling miko for that."
She blinked. "The kotodama...?"
He smiled and reached into his collar, pulling out the aged rosary.
"They look different..."
"Hell of a difference five hundred years makes," he grunted as she ran a finger over one smooth bead. "You got any idea what I went through tryin to keep these things?! Had to travel all the way to fuckin' Greenland at one point to get 'em back from some thievin' bastard. And you see this scar by my left eye? You don't even wanna know where that came from. Tell me it's the best place to hide that shit. Goddamn miko and her goddamn gold marble..."
Kagome giggled as he continued to rant to himself. This was the Inuyasha she knew. Her strong and brave hanyou hero that never failed to put a smile, or a scowl for that matter, on her face.
That's right, she thought to herself as she watched him talk. He always was the best distraction, even when he was at his worst...
"So when do we eat?"
The question caught her off guard and she gasped, racing to her feel and dragging him toward the door.
"It'll all be cold by now!" she whined, yanking the door open and shoving him inside. "It's all your fault, Inuyasha!"
"Me?! What'd I do now?!"
They paused at the kitchen door as two small blurs raced by in hot pursuit of a very panicked-looking cat. Her mother sat in the usual place at the table laughing and blushing furiously. She gave the woman an odd look, her gaze landing on a suspiciously calm Amaru, who was currently taking up residence in her chair to her mother's right.
"Oh, Kagome!" Ms.Higurashi gasped between bits of laughter. "I'd just sent Souta to get you. The dinner is getting cold."
Inuyasha took his cue, planting himself across from her mother, leaving her to slowly lower herself into the seat across from Amaru's. She kept her eyes down as she opened her napkin out onto her lap. She could feel a heavy gaze fall on her and was almost positive it would be his . The clinking of the serving spoon against the rice bowl signalled the start of the meal, but she refused to look up as she awaited her turn to serve her plate.
"Where are Kimi and Souta?" she asked to no one in particular.
"They've already eaten," her mother answered.
"Kimi seemed especially fond of the sweetened eggs," Amaru was the one to speak this time, his voice low and smooth. "They're quite delicious. My compliments to the chef."
Her cheeks lit up as she murmured her thanks.
"She's right, too," Inuyasha gushed, savoring a hearty mouthful. "My kid's got good taste. She gets it from her old man."
Ms.Higurashi laughed good-naturedly, and Kagome peeked from beneath her lashes, only to find that Amaru's eyes had never left her.
Does he EVER blink?!
"Mmm!" Ms.Higurashi sighed contentedly, breaking the long silence that had stretch the length of the meal. "You've outdone yourself, Kagome. If I didn't know better, I'd think there was a little something extra added to these meats!"
She blushed again. She had taken time preparing the meal, but the fish and beef were done special. It was no surprise that Inuyasha enjoyed the food she made. Over a year of giving him samples of her cooking had made her an expert on his likes and dislikes. But before she had known that the hanyou would be present, her mind had been focused on making something that Amaru would enjoy. She had no idea what the demon would eat, if he ate anything at all. She'd tossed around a few ideas in her head until one had struck her as being just the perfect thing for the occasion.
What better dish to offer a god, she mused with a shy smile, than the nectar of gods itself?
She'd glazed the meats with fresh golden honey, and coated them with wine. Looking back on it, she had to smile. Leave it to mom to notice these things.
She stifled her giggle behind a mouthful of rice.
"That was the best thing I've had in about fifty years," Inuyasha breathed, sitting back and patting his belly.
"I'm sure Misako will be glad to hear it," Amaru murmured sarcastically, a nonchalant look on his face as he took a bite of the fish.
"What she doesn't know won't hurt her," his brother laughed. "Won't hurt me either."
"Delicious," her mother complimented again, kissing her lightly on the cheek as she rose. "You don't mind if we go and play with the children, do you sweetheart? Coming, Inuyasha?"
"Huh?"
"I'm sure I have a game or two lying around that they would enjoy," the woman went on, tugging the confused hanyou along with her. "You can help me search for them."
Their voices trailed off, and Kagome was left alone with Amaru.
He was the first to speak.
"Wine?" he inquired with a hint of laughter in his voice as he used a single fang to pear away one strip of meat from his fork.
"Grandpa always said it made the meat more tender," she stammered, begging the gods for forgiveness at this exaggeration. "And the honey was to hide the taste. Nothing special. I mean, not that I wouldn't make something special for guests. Even Inuyasha liked it. Although I didn't really know he was coming... But it's not what you think! Like I'd run around crazy all day trying to think of what you'd want to eat. Which I didn't! I mean..."
"I appreciate the thought," he cut in smoothly. "It's... endearing to have been considered in such a way."
Well that did a fine job of shutting me up...
"It was very good, Kagome," his voice was low again, the intoxicating lilt of his words sending shivers down her spine. "Am I to believe you now hold me in such high esteem, you would go to all this trouble just to please me?"
She nearly choked. "You're just... all blunt and straightforwardness, aren't you?"
"Am I wrong?"
She pushed her bowl to the side, resting her chopsticks next to it and turning away. "I'd better get these things cleaned up."
He was in front of her before she reached completely to her feet, taking her hand and pulling her toward him.
"Am I wrong... Kagome?"
"I..."
His lips met hers before she could respond, his left hand grasping the back of her neck, drawing her steadily nearer. His fingertips stroked her heated skin, grasp tightening around her hand as he deepened the kiss, his tongue meeting hers, tasting wine and honey and the sweetness that was all her own.
"Miss Kagome?"
She pulled away hastily, tugging her hand from his and putting some distance between. She turned her attention to the little girl who stood in the kitchen doorway. Her face burned. Souta wasn't far behind.
"Yes?" she choked out, self-consciously bringing the back of her hand to her lips.
"Have you seen Buyo?" the concerned little voice asked. "We've looked everywhere for him. Daddy and Miss Higurashi haven't seen him either..."
Kagome ignored the figure beside her, kneeling next to the girl and smiling brightly, giving her reassurance.
"Don't worry," she soothed the frazzled little child. "Buyo's always running off somewhere. If you're really worried, I'll help you look for him, ok?"
The girl nodded and Kagome took her hand, throwing a sidelong glance at Amaru before ushering the two worried kids out into the living room.
He smiled to himself while watching her leave.
Outside the door, just beyond the square of light spilling from the kitchen window, Inuyasha held a slightly indignant Buyo by the scruff of his neck. He watched his half-brother's shadow as it moved through the house in the direction Kagome had gone. He placed a hand over the cat's mouth as it began to whine.
"Shh," he murmured, crouching and shuffling further back into the darkness.
He'd been a second too late, sending Kimi in to get Kagome. He'd sensed his brother's scheming as soon as they'd made it into the dining nook, and hadn't missed the fact that Amaru's eyes never left Kagome's face their entire meal. He'd had to kidnap the defenseless cat to provide a distraction when he'd seen the demon make his move. Staring down at the feline as it licked at his claws, he frowned.
What the hell are you up to, Sesshoumaru?
