Chapter 7
Slowly the morning light broke through the violet clouds on the horizon. The crisp air was humid and thick, making everything wet with dew. Kagome watched the glorious colors spilling over the sky as she sat on the cold, rocky ground, wishing she would be able to just forget for a few peaceful moments. She felt like she was in a tale spin, spiraling further and further into an all consuming abyss. The blessed beauty of the sunrise was lost on her sore, swollen eyes. The tears had dried, but now her face felt sticky and hot as she contemplated the hopelessness she was feeling. She hadn’t noticed his presence.
The demon lord watched her, all of his senses relaying every minute aspect of the girl’s turmoil to him. He thought back on when he’d first obtained her; how badly he had wanted to break her. It seemed he had finally succeeded.
“Kagome,” came his deep, masculine voice.
She would not look at him, instead choosing to continue to stare , unseeing, at the majestic sunrise.
He sighed as he closed his eyes, appearing frustrated or angry, it was hard to tell. “I’ve grown quite tired of your tears.” he said, “Always the offensive odor permeates your presence, and it disgusts me.” he said, with a sneer curling his lip.
The miko’s eyes narrowed as she sent a glare toward him that could have dropped anyone else dead in the snow.
He met her glare, but it seemed no anger clouded the golden pools, despite his lowered brow and narrowed eyes. There was a cheerlessness that settled in his gut as their eyes were locked for that brief moment. He looked away, “I’m taking you back.” he said then.
Silence hung between them for a time as she listened and watched him intently, unable to find her tongue.
“I don’t want you anymore.” he spoke softly, his eyes fixed on the distant dawn. His face became unreadable. “I’m setting you free.”
Kagome’s mouth hung open, her eyes wide and brimming with imminent tears. “…But… why?” she asked, barely able to speak as she felt she was about to faint from shock. So long… nine months she’d been his captive and never once had he even implied that he was thinking of giving her back her freedom… why now?
“Because, this is what I decided.” he said sternly. “I really hate the scent of tears, and this is what you smell like.” his voice softened as his golden eyes seemed to dull as if the dawn was stealing their fire. “Gather your things, and I shall take you back… to Inuyasha…” he added before he turned away from her.
Kagome stood up quickly and cried out a sharp, “Wait.” gaining an immediate reaction from the demon lord. She walked up to him, her eyes scanning him as she circled around to his front. His eyes were as dull as coals, and guarded securely from his emotions. He seemed perfectly in control of himself. “You…you’re serious…” came her disbelieving voice.
“Have you ever seen this Sesshoumaru otherwise?” he said setting some sort of distance from her with his voice alone.
“I’m free…” she said as the tears trickled down, yet her lips spread into an awkward smile. “I’m free” she repeated seeming to be overwhelmed by the flood of emotion she was feeling. “Thank you” she whispered as her fingers clasped his sleeve as she began to tremble.
He turned his eyes away from her as she cried from the joy that overcame her. He was silent for a while, not reaching to her, nor pulling away from her grasp, only maintaining himself, and remaining immune to her.
She finally released his sleeve and wiped her eyes on the back of her wrist, attempting to calm herself enough that she could at least speak properly.
He spoke then, as he stared at the wet, sun-kissed rocks beside them, “One thing bothers me… and I don‘t know why it should matter… but I’ve often thought upon it… Inuyasha…” he said calmly before he paused.
Kagome watched his face intently as he spoke, despite his refusal to look at her. She was curious at the mention of his brother’s name… a name that he despised and cursed, yet spoke now with out so much as bating an eye.
“You think of him a lot.” he began, “You’ve thought of him every day since the day I found you.”
Kagome lowered her eyes as she listened, then she scratched her ear apprehensively. Why was he stating that like it was something that was written in a book?
“Not a day has passed you haven’t given him at least a moment of your time. Although you have not seen him in all of that time, you still think of him.” he continued.
“Well, so what. I can’t help it if I missed him. You can‘t control what I think about, Sesshoumaru.” she said pursing her lips.
“No… I can’t.” he replied. “I just wonder… after I return you to your old life, will the new one I gave you ever be on your mind again... Or will you forget about it and bury it away never to resurface.”
Kagome’s mouth dropped open a bit at the statement. He was in a odd mood, it seemed. She’d never heard him say something so… trivial…
“Will you ever think of me, Kagome? Will you think of me when I’m no longer a pressing matter in your life?” he asked, his face finally turning to meet hers’, as the awkward question left his mouth.
Kagome looked at the golden eyes that still seemed guarded in the morning light, feeling confused and irresolute. “I…” she started as she pondered over the question, “I don’t know… maybe…” she said, her eyes darting back and forth between him and the ground. What was she supposed to say in this sort of scenario?
He turned then, shaking his head, “Never mind. It makes no difference, really. We will eat, and I will take you back.” he said as he left her bewildered, but in awe.

Breakfast was quiet and unnerving as she sat in his deafening silence. Afterwards she packed her belongings and came to stand beside him. The morning sky had darkened slightly and the wind had picked up, playing in his hair as it did so often. He remained quiet though the wind began to howl softly in her ears. She pushed the stray hair from her face and waited patiently for him.
Momentarily he reached out for her, gesturing for her to come to him, which she did. His arm wrapped around her as the opaque fog gathered around their feet before she felt the ground fall out beneath her. As the breeze rushed past her face, her hands held onto him and everything suddenly felt oddly surreal.
She felt the cold flurry of air over her skin, and the warmth of him pressed so close to her, and she thought of the first time he’d taken her to fly with him. So long… She thought about how long she’d been gone as she watched the ground fly past below them. It would be strange going back to her friends after all that had happened. Not that she wasn’t excited to go back, but she wondered if things would ever really be the same again. She thought about Sesshoumaru as well. Why his change of heart… His strange question this morning. She looked at his face almost shyly as her mind swam.
His face was stern and guarded as she watched him… searching, but in the end she couldn’t pierce his icy defenses. She closed her eyes as she laid her head meekly on his shoulder as the journey back to Inuyasha’s forest progressed.

It was well past noon by the time they reached the dear and familiar presence of the bone eater’s well. The demon lord landed softly on the warm grass, his flawless visage distant from her. His strong arms lowered her to the ground, and retreated from her form as he stepped back. She seemed almost unsure as he retreated. She turned to him, her hands clasped to her chest, and her eyes wide.
For a time their eyes locked and a moment of silence passed before finally he turned and began to walk away.
“Wait!” she cried, taking a step toward him.
He stopped, turning halfway back toward her, pokerfaced as ever as he waited for her to speak.
She seemed at a lost for words, “Aren’t… Aren’t you even going to say goodbye?” she finally asked.
His impassive face betrayed no emotion as he spoke, “Goodbye.”
She watched him leave, wondering if she would ever see the Lord of the West again. It was a strange feeling that washed over her then; a feeling almost akin to sadness as she came to realize he was really gone. The feeling was short lived, however, for when she heard the pounding footsteps approach from behind her, she quickly turned to them, and her heart nearly stopped for a moment as she saw Inuyasha’s bright golden eyes fixated on her like never before.
“…Kagome” he said as he stared at her almost disbelievingly.
Her eyes grew watery as the smile spread on her lips, “Inuyasha!” She cried as she ran to him, throwing her arms around him, and he, likewise, did the same. “Oh Inuyasha! I missed you so much!”
The hanyou crushed her against him in a desperate embrace. “Kagome, I swear I’ll never let you out of my sight again! I’m so sorry!” he shouted, his voice wavering as if he was about to cry.
The miko’s tears were quickly absorbed by Inuyasha’s fire-mice coat as she buried her face into his shoulder. Letting out a strange mixture of laughing and crying she held fast to him, as if he would disappear.
Inuyasha held her fiercely, all his pining for her return tightened his chest as it was finally being realized. It’s true what they say; Absence makes the heart grow fonder. “Ah-ha! Kagome! Kagome! Kagome!” He shouted as he lifted her up and spun around in glee.
The priestess squealed in delight, and held fast as she was spun around abruptly. As her feet again landed on solid ground she backed up to look at his familiar yet forgotten face. The smile never left her lips as she looked upon his equally joyous features. He hadn’t changed at all. And he was really here as was she.
But in a surprise, she found his lips suddenly upon hers’. A kiss, zealous and passionate, he gave her upon her return. It was like a dream, and she surrendered herself to it, kissing him back and pushing herself against him. ‘Inuyasha.’
In the trees nearby, Sesshoumaru’s stoic mask of indifference slipped as he watched the pair reunited. As the couple kissed, he observed in silence. The resentment that seethed inside him toward Inuyasha bubbled and cooked, while the feelings he harbored for Kagome felt like a lead spike had driven it’s way through his chest. He turned away. He could bare no more. She was free of him, now he would only have to work toward freeing himself from her… When had she captured him, he wondered as he walked into the darkness of the shaded forest.

Kagome was happily reunited with the other members of her old traveling party. She was overjoyed to see all of their smiling faces, Sango, Miroku, Shippo, Kirara, even old Kaede had been there to welcome her back. The group had a bit of a feast at her return, and as they sat around the fire, Kagome got to hear all the valiant tales of their search for her while she’d been Sesshoumaru’s captive. Although none of the group had asked her any details of her absence, though she knew Inuyasha had probably told them after the fight he’d had with the youkai lord, it was still puzzling. She wasn’t even sure she wanted them to know that much of the story. After all, there were many things she found… she didn’t want them to know.
But inevitably Inuyasha was the one to finally bring up questions, “Kagome…” he paused as the happy atmosphere grew more grave, “What was it like? Did he… hurt you often?”
The rest of the group was silent as all their eyes were trained on her, awaiting her response.
The miko sighed and set her bowl on the floor in front of her, “Sesshoumaru was… strict.” she started. “It was really hard in the beginning, but I guess we warmed up to each other the longer I was with them.”
Shippo jumped up beside her, “What happened that night, Kagome? We lost you in the dark and then we never saw you again.” The little youkai frowned, “I thought you were dead…”
Kagome smiled sadly and patted the boy‘s head, “Oh Shippo, I’m so sorry to worry you, all of you.” She looked down to her plate of food and gave a soft sigh, “That black youkai… I was sure I was going to die right there to that beast, but then Sesshoumaru appeared in front of me. He was like a beacon somehow. It’s surreal looking back on it now, but he was like an angel standing there. He saved me.”
The group was silent and dumbfounded as they stared at the miko, absorbing her words.
She continued, “I won’t lie. I hated him. I hated him with every fiber of my being. That he would put a price on my life… it seemed so wrong. But …I can’t hate him anymore. I’m alive because of him.”
Sango gazed at her friend’s somber face, “It’s okay Kagome. I can understand how you must feel.” She stood and walked over to the girl’s side placing a calming hand on her shoulder. “Whatever happened, it’s all over now, and you’re home.”
Kagome smiled up at the older woman and found tears suddenly brimming her eyes. “Thanks. I‘m so happy to be back.”
Inuyasha stared at the miko as Sango and Shippo comforted her, His mind was elsewhere. The words rang in his head… the words Sesshoumaru had spoke to him the night of their fight. Her scent was permeated with Sesshoumaru’s. Surely his asshole brother had only said that to get under his skin… “My Kagome fucks like a Goddess” His golden eyes stared into the fire before him, contemplative and unfocused. No. Kagome would never permit such a thing… and if something did happen surely she would have been unwilling… Someone like Sesshoumaru would rape a girl. There was no doubt in his mind, and if he had… There would be hell to pay…

Already it had been four days since Kagome had been back, and although Inuyasha had mentioned them getting back to the jewel hunting, he hadn’t been particularly pressing about the matter, in fact he was being quite considerate toward her, which, oddly enough had Kagome on edge. She had visited her family for two days, but limited her time, as she was a bit anxious to get back to the jewel shards herself. Though Inuyasha and the others had found a few on their own, Naraku had undoubtedly found more in her absence.
The sun was setting in the feudal era, on the last day before the group set out to continue their quest, and Inuyasha and Kagome found themselves alone while the sun slowly fell below the horizon. The day had been enjoyable and Inuyasha had spend most of it with her. She was happy to be with him at long last, but at the same time, it wasn’t the same as before. It didn’t’ feel the same…
It was then Inuyasha turned to her and took her hand in his. The face he wore was serious, and Kagome felt suddenly like retreating. He looked worried, and he was just acting way too nice. It was weird, and unnatural… “I want to ask you something.” he said as his round golden eyes pierced her.
Those eyes… They were the same color as Sesshoumaru’s, but so very different. Why was it, She kept seeing the demon lord in Inuyasha’s eyes… It just started happening today. The color of honey… Kagome nodded and prepared herself to answer him.
“Sesshoumaru… Did he…”Inuyasha trailed off as his eyes became downcast, “Did Sesshoumaru touch you… sexually…” He was a bit reluctant to use the word ‘rape.’
Kagome’s eyes grew wide and disbelieving. ‘How could he know?’ She screamed inside. She couldn’t tell Inuyasha. How could she tell him… that she’d willingly lain with the man who had abducted her? The man who had tried to kill him on numerous occasions. What would he think of her? He would be disgusted! Never… He cold never know the truth. None of them. Absolutely.
Her shocked silence had Inuyasha’s brow creased in concern. “Kagome… He raped you…” he said as more of a statement than a question.
Kagome’s hands came up to cover her face as she felt the burning of tears. She nodded as the sobs came softly. She lied… pinning it on Sesshoumaru was just easier than facing Inuyasha’s disappointment. It was okay… Sesshoumaru was out of their lives. She justified it in her mind, but the guilt already seared her gut.
The hanyou embraced her comfortingly, rage surged in his veins, but he buried it as he comforted her, “It’s okay.” he whispered, “He won’t get away with it Kagome, mark my words.”
Kagome abruptly tore away from him then, looking quite distressed, “No!”
The hanyou stared at her in utter confusion, “No?” he questioned.
“Inuyasha, you mustn’t go after him. Just leave him alone, please!” She gripped his sleeves desperately as she pleaded.
“Are you telling me to just let him go after what he did to you?! Is that really what you want? Kagome, you deserves justice!” The half-breed spat back in objection.
“No Inuyasha! I don’t want you to fight him. Please, it’s all in the past now. Just leave him be. He’s gone from our lives!” She frowned deeply as she begged him to let it go.
Inuyasha’s brows creased as he diverted his eyes from her, “You’ve changed Kagome…” he said somberly. “After what he did to you… you have no desire for vengeance at all…” his eyes came back to her tear-streaked face, “Has he completely smothered you to the point you won’t even fight back anymore?”
“Promise me.” She said trying hard not to let his words cut her already bleeding heart.
Inuyasha stood up and turned away, unable to look at her face anymore, “Fine. If that’s really what you want.” And with that he made a hasty exit, leaving the miko on the hilltop alone and in the dark.
What had she become…
