Yuudai no Keikoku Intermission 1
Running, running, running so fast. He needed to stop, to breathe, but he couldn’t. There was something behind him. He didn’t know what, but he knew that if he stopped he’d die, knew with every fiber of his being that he didn’t want to die. So he ran, as fast as his little legs could carry him.
He was older than most of the people he’d left behind in the village, but he had the appearance of a seven or eight year old. Far too young to be away from his mother, but he didn’t have a choice. His mama was gone and she was never coming back. He almost had to stop from the fit of helplessness that thought brought, but he pushed on by sheer force of will.
His ears twitched, and he realized with a burst of terror that the thing he was running from was still behind him, getting ever closer. He couldn’t outrun it—it was too big. A deafening roar rent the air, and Inuyasha’s hearing blanked as his ears flattened in agony.
It was right behind him, and there couldn’t have been a worse moment for him to trip and fall, but he was disoriented and scared and so down he went. He lay on the forest floor, face down in soppy leaves, unable to get up and run anymore. He was so tired, and so sad, and for one hopeless moment he wished the thing would kill him. Then he could join mama and he wouldn’t have to hurt anymore.
There was another roar, this one even louder than before, and something stepped out of the brush. Inuyasha didn’t look up, too afraid to face it. He hoped his death would be quick.
“Get up,” said a quiet voice.
The boy startled. He hadn’t expected the huge thing to be able to talk. He raised his head cautiously, and instead of a giant thing he saw a beautiful man dressed all in white and red, and whose hair matched his own. He stared in awe at the ethereal creature, unable to comprehend that a male could be as beautiful as this one.
“Get up,” the man said again. “I will not tell you a third time,”
Inuyasha scrambled to his feet and stared up…and up and up. He’d never seen someone so tall. Now that he could see the face more clearly, he noticed the strange markings on the pretty face. He didn’t know what to say, so he simply looked, forgetting that his mother had often scolded him against doing so.
“You are Inuyasha,” the man said. It didn’t sound like a question, so he remained silent. “Where is your mother?”
The little boy caught his breath, “She died,” he whispered. Rallying his courage, he straightened and asked, “Who’re you?”
“That is not your concern, hanyou.”
“Did you save me from that thing? Are you an angel?”
The man’s eyes narrowed and he disabused Inuyasha of that notion straight away—by backhanding him and sending him flying into a nearby tree. He scrambled to his feet painfully, poised to run but the ‘angel’ caught him by the scruff of his neck and lifted him so that they were face to face. Now that he was so close, Inuyasha recognized the look on the pretty face as one of hate. He’d seen it often enough, though the “angel” was better at hiding it than the villagers had been.
“I came here to kill you, filthy half-breed, like you should have been killed the moment you were
conceived.”
Inuyasha was having a hard time concentrating due to the force with which his head had hit the tree, but he got the gist well enough. He started to struggle, terrified and desperate to get away.
“BE STILL!” the man commanded, shaking him a little, and Inuyasha quieted at once. “I have rethought my original plans. I will not kill you this night. There would be no sport in slaughtering one as pathetic as you.”
Inuyasha dropped to the ground unceremoniously. “Grow older and stronger. Then I will return to relieve you of your worthless existence,” The stranger walked away. “Remember, little brother, your life is mine. Do not allow anyone else to have it.”
Inuyasha thought, ‘Little brother?!’ before he succumbed to the combination of relief and pain coursing through his body and fainted.
Inuyasha sat up gasping, still feeling claws digging into his throat, and the acrid smell of threatening poison. It took him a few seconds to remember where he was and that he wasn’t a little boy anymore, and that he was, indeed, alive and able to take care of himself.
He pulled his knees to his chest and sat on his bed in silence. He didn’t sleep anymore that night.

Naraku lounged in his little room, plotting. His plans were almost in place, he just needed a little while longer for the last little details to fall into line. Kagura should be taking care of that.
In the meantime, he was bored. He decided to check in on his favorite little puppy. Riling the stupid boy was always worth a few moments of amusement.
“Kanna, show me Inuyasha,”
“I cannot,” his first born said tonelessly, after a moment.
Naraku frowned. “Try again,” he ordered, interested and a little alarmed. This had never happened before.
Kanna concentrated, and suddenly the mirror went bright with light and a disembodied voice resonated from within. “YOU MAY NOT TRESPASS HERE! YOUR HEART IS EVIL AND YOUR INTENTIONS ARE IMPURE. BEGONE!” With a mighty crack the mirror shattered and Kanna collapsed.
Naraku contemplated the crumpled form for a moment before looking away. He could repair her easily enough, but he thought he might wait for Kagura. She’d been becoming impertinent again lately and this would serve as a reminder of what a thin line she was walking. He did not care for her or for any of them. The very moment they outlived their usefulness, well…they wouldn’t outlive it for very long.
Well, no matter. He had bigger problems for the moment than a mutinous incarnation. Why had the mirror not shown Inuyasha’s whereabouts? Whose voice had come out of the mirror? And why had the mirror broken?
The first was the most important question, of course. His plans revolved around knowing where the inuhanyou was at all times, and if he could not…
Well, that simply did not bear thinking about.

Hakkaku gritted his teeth and scraped together what was left of his patience. Kouga had been on cloud nine ever since the human pack had been staying with them. Too bad the rest of the pack decidedly was not. And it was getting on some of their nerves that the Alpha, who was supposed to be looking out for them, couldn’t see it.
Surprisingly the two older humans weren’t too bad, aside from their smell and the little mess ups they made that could be excused because of their ignorance. They were courteous and seemed properly wary of being in the presence of so many creatures that could tear them apart in the blink of an eye.
Kagome and the fox cub on the other hand… their continued presence was not going over so well. The kitsune was obnoxiously rude with just about everyone, and seemed to think all he had to do was make eyes at Kagome and everything would be forgiven. And it was, at least for her. He had no discipline, no sense of politeness whatsoever. No wolf, nay, no higher demon child would be allowed to act thus. Kouga had tried to explain it to the human girl, but she would have none of it. Said such things as “He’s just a baby,” or “He’s a child, he doesn’t know any better,”
But Hakkaku was willing to bet that wasn’t the case at all. In fact, he was pretty damn certain that that ‘baby’ was older than she was. And it galled, it galled, that Kouga hadn’t done anything to bring the kit in line. Or make his woman do it.
And speaking of Kagome, Hakkaku was beginning to dislike her more and more every day. It was something in the way she had come in and…well, basically taken over the place. Some of the pack, and especially the females, did not like it. Even more than they hadn’t liked the idea of their leader bringing in an outsider, and a human at that, as his intended mate. She refused to eat most of the things they prepared, and she complained ceaselessly about the state and smell of the den.
What had she expected? It was a wolf den not a castle. And it wasn’t so bad, at that.
Hakkaku was wishing more and more every day that Inuyasha had never gone missing. He didn’t know how the hanyou put up with it all, but he did not envy him the job. He hoped they found him soon, and this whole ridiculous mess would blow over.
His hopes were answered, though not exactly in the way he wished. They did not find Inuyasha, but when Hakkaku returned from hunting that afternoon, it was to a jubilant Kagome and a slightly sheepish-looking Kouga, who was holding a message scroll.
It had come. An invitation for the ookami Alpha and one companion to an Inuyoukai birthing celebration had come.
“This is great! When does it say we leave?” Kagome squealed.
“Uh, Kagome—“
“Oh, isn’t this amazing, guys? I thought it would take much longer to come—“
“Not a moment too soon,” Ginta muttered.
“--but this is…is just amazing. I’ll have to pack again, and--”
“Kagome, you can’t go,” Kouga interrupted her flurry of plans.
“What? Why not?”
“Do you remember me saying that humans aren’t really welcome in Inuyoukai territory?”
“Yeah, but it said your mate could come too, right? Well aren’t you always saying I’m your woman? Isn’t that close enough?”
“Kagome, it’s not that simple. My saying you’re my woman is different than our actually being mates.”
The human girl looked crestfallen. “Couldn’t we pretend?”
“I’m afraid that’s not possible. Demons have ways of identifying a mated pair. It’s instinct.”
Kagome was (no, she couldn’t be) pouting. And Kouga actually looked guilty. For gods’ sake he wasn’t even breeding with her and he was already whipped.
“Don’t worry, Kagome,” the wolf leader rushed to reassure her. “I’ll go to the gathering and find out what I can about Inuyasha. I swear it,” he was holding her hands again and looking at her so earnestly Hakkaku wanted to gag.
“Th-thanks,” the human mumbled uncomfortably, but mustered a smile. A fake smile. Hakkaku growled. He’d heard of love being blind but this was ridiculous.
“Ginta, you’re coming with me,”
“I can’t Kouga. I’ve spent too much time away from Hana as it is. We’re working on getting her with child.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Kouga said, but he was grinning. “Good luck with that. Hakkaku then. And don’t you even think about refusing,” he glowered, and Hakkaku wanted to grin because that was more like his alpha. “I know for a fact you don’t have a mate or whelps. And don’t go mating someone to get out of it either. We leave in a month’s time.”
“You got it, Kouga,” And just like that Hakkaku felt better. It would be good for Kouga to spend some time around their kind for a while. He might even meet a more worthy demoness to take his mind off the human. He heard the wench complaining about something and sighed.
He just had to get through the next month without killing himself. Or someone else.

Junko watched as, in a rare unguarded moment, Inuyasha played with the little human girl. Something about their interactions tickled at her subconscious but she had yet to place a finger on what it was. So, for now she would continue to watch until it came to her.
She was beginning to worry because the month she’d given herself was almost up and she was still no closer to finding a solution to the rosary problem. She’d ordered scrolls from the library at the Central Castle and from a few still-living priests and priestesses she had encountered in the past few decades, but so far there was no luck. Each one said the same thing—that the spell could only be removed by the person who held power over the spell or by someone of equal or greater spiritual strength. By the thickness and hue of the threads that bound the spell to the Inuyasha’s youki, Junko guessed that this young woman was incredibly strong. Stronger than any priestess she knew, anyway.
And Sesshoumaru had informed her just this morning that it was the night of Inuyasha’s Weakness. He would turn into a human (for all intents and purposes) and this frustrated Junko because it would be a prime night to attempt any kind of removal ritual…if she knew of any such ritual, which she didn’t.
Highly frustrating.
Then, as she was letting her mind drift, it hit her. So innocuously, so casually did it happen that she almost missed it. Inuyasha hoisted the girl onto his shoulders and in an effort to keep her balance the little girl grasped the beads and, astonishingly, they lifted a few inches before the spell caused her to release them. That wasn’t even the most amazing part though—they hadn’t harmed her at all. They just flared briefly and she let go, seemingly not even aware anything had happened.
Junko abruptly turned around, going to her room and poring over some of the more relevant scrolls one more time.
It seemed that necklace might come off tonight, after all.
