Author's note: To all you readers who have stuck with me for so long,
I thank you. This has been one of my most favorite stories to write and
I see it has been many other's favorite to read. I hope I do this
work justice with the next chapter. Many reviewers are concerned with
Sesshoumaru's possible death. And I will admit, it has crossed my mind.
This story is not planned by me. It is unfolding as I write. Whatever
comes next, whatever happens to Sesshoumaru and Rin, I hope you will
enjoy reading the story as I enjoy writing it.
chapter 7
----------------------------
Dull pain pulled her from the deep darkness. Rin groaned at the
raw ache in her back and muscles. She opened her eyes to
dim light and the sound of morning birds. Blinking several times to
clear the blurriness, her surroundings came into focus. A beautiful painted tree
stretched its almost bare branches across a long pale wall and over two
large doors. Up above, more limbs from the painted tree reached
across the ceiling to a lone light in the center that resembled an
undecorated white Chinese lantern.
Fuzziness began to clear and images of memory came flooding back:
Monten grabbing her, then pain, fear, crying, Hiten's anger and when Monten....
Monten tried to....
Then....His voice.
He stopped Monten.
The sky filled with black and grey clouds.
Hiten was standing above her about to...
Sesshoumaru crashed into him.
They fought.
Then everything went quiet.
Sesshoumaru came and....held her.
The pain inside had been so terrible. All of it. It had felt so bad.....
His voice...his deep voice. The feeling of it echoed inside. He had said...
He said.....
'"I don't know. I...I don't know why."'
'"I'm sorry."'
'"Forgive me."'
The echo of the pained cracked voice faded to a feeling: the pressure
of a weight just above her
stomach. She looked down to see a white masculine arm with red stripes.
Her heart began to thud as she followed the forearm up a white but charred
sleeve, to long silvery white hair, then to.....
"Uh....."
The hard thud in her chest ached as she stared at the dog demon's
face only inches from hers. She jerked backward, trying to get the arm off
and get up at the same time. Pushing the arm away, she sat up.
Feeling wetness, she lifted her hand to see it coated with blood. Eyes wide,
she eased off the bed, hand shaking, almost falling from the weakness in
her legs. The blood dripped from her fingertips to the floor as she
held herself with the other hand. She stood there, staring at the dog demon
lying there.
Blood.
So much blood.
The sheets beneath him were a dark red, soaked with it.
His once white cloths, now torn, burnt, were blotted crimson.
She backed up till she touched the wall.
Was he dead? After a few hard shaky breaths, Rin struggled with
unstable steps around the bed. As she moved, watching the dog demon,
the muscles in her back and shoulder screamed hotly.
Monten had really done a number on her when he slammed her into the
tree and onto the ground.
Rin stopped between the bed and the door. For a long time she just
stood there staring, not knowing what to do. What if he wasn't dead but dying?
Carefully, she eased closer, still holding the hand covered in drying blood
out in front of her. With slow, nearly faltering steps, she neared the bed
then stopped still. His eyes were closed, but his chest seemed to rise
and fall as if he were barely breathing. Delicately, she reached out,
a strange ache filling her chest as her hand trembled. When her fingertip
touched his sleeve, she paused, shivering at the feeling that was
rushing through her senses. He was dying.
"Rin."
He spoke clear, quiet, and deep, with a raspy edge then...
...his eyes opened.
Rin dropped her hand.
He did not move but gazed at the wall.
They were not as gold as she remembered. No. They were dull, almost lifeless.
"Rin."
He said her name again but didn't seem to be speaking to her directly.
It was almost as if he was talking to someone who wasn't there...
..a ghost.
Darkness began to shadow the foggy amber. His eyes began to close.
A sudden pain began to tighten in her chest close to her heart.
It pushed inward and outward, forcing her to move. Before his eyes
closed completely, she grasped his arm.
"Don't.....Please don't." A tear quivered from her lash to slide
down her cheek.
Eyes half open, he blinked once.
Stricken by the unknown ache and pounding thud of her heart, Rin
swallowed, unable to stop shaking. "Don't leave."
Again, he gave a slow blink, but did not speak as his eyes began to
close again.
"I...I'm here." She choked, desperate.
His eyes closed and his chest rose once then fell one last
time.
The dark rushed in, flooding her vision, pulling her down. She fell to her
knees, sucking air. The darkness was stealing her breath, her life!
"Sesshoumaru!" She gasped. "No! I'm here! Don't go!
....Don't..leave."
Rin let the words go far away as the hollow black wave smothered her into
nothingness.
