Here we go, chapter seven. I never really thought that my story would reach this far. But it has and I thank you all for coming along for the ride.

With You: Chapter Seven
The Awakening, Part Four
The sharp sting of the sun’s rays hit Rin’s eyes with a vengeance as it peeked over the horizon. She lifted herself to her knees, and once her eyes adjusted, she crawled over to where Sesshomaru slept. He was quiet, unmoving. She traced her fingers along his chest, and flattened her hand, watching it rise up and down as he breathed in and out slowly.
It had been five days since they had brought him to the hut, and he hadn’t awakened. She had bandaged his wounds, but still, he lay sleeping, never moving. She looked at him worriedly, hoping that he would wake up soon. She hoped that he would wake up soon; she just couldn’t stand to see him hurt like this. Part of her, however, was hoping that he would never wake, so that he could stay there and she could just watch him sleep. As she watched him sleep, she began to lightly trace her hand across his chest with her fingertips. She looked at him lovingly, wishing that whatever happened, he’d be okay.
A noise sounded near the doorway. She turned to see Jaken waking up, bracing himself against his staff. Pulling himself up, he slowly limped his way toward Rin and Sesshomaru. He wasn’t as hardened as Sesshomaru. His body was still in very much pain.
Standing next to Rin, he looked at Sesshomaru with a worried look in his eyes. “He hasn’t awakened yet?”
Rin shook her head. “He hasn’t even moved.” She turned to give her master a worried look of her own. “I actually find myself wishing that he never wakes up, just so I could stay here and watch him forever.”
Jaken looked at her with a slight hint of disgust in his eyes. “You really haven’t changed all that much, have you?”
Rin chuckled. “I guess not.”
“I guess it’s for the best.” Jaken turned his attention back to Sesshomaru. “It’s obvious that your loyalty hasn’t changed.”
Rin’s eyes darkened. “No. It never has and it never will.” Pulling herself to her feet, she began to make her way outside. “I’m going outside to check on Ah-Un. Do you want to come or are you going to stay here?”
Jaken began to follow her. “I’ll come with you. I need some air.”
Together, the two of them made their way outside. As they approached, one of the dragon’s heads opened its eyes. Seeing them, it then nudged the other and together the two heads began to rise. As Rin got closer, she called out, “Hey, Ah-Un! Feeling any better this morning?” The two heads bowed slightly, signifying a positive response.
Rin walked up to them and knelt down by their necks, pressing lightly with her hands against their hide. The dragon made no indication that it felt any pain. She continued to press against its skin, slowly making her way to its side. Still, there was no indication that the dragon’s wounds were still affecting it. She smiled, happy that her medical care had done its work. She pulled herself to her feet and looked the dragon in the eye, slowly caressing the side of one of its faces. She spoke to it a soothing, caressing voice. “You’re doing just fine. You should be back to your old self in no time.” The dragon’s head slowly began to rub her hand with the side of its face. It let out a sort of purring growl. The other head nudged Rin, so she used her other hand to give it the same treatment. Both heads let out a soft purring noise. It had been a long time since they had seen Rin and she used to do this for them when Sesshomaru would leave them alone with her to keep her out of danger.
She looked at the two of them and felt a sharp pang in her heart. She could tell that they had missed her, and to be honest, she had missed them a lot too. She missed spending time with them, singing songs about why Jaken and Ah-Un were green, following Sesshomaru around, asking him questions that she never got answers to.
It wasn’t the best life, but it provided her with some of the best memories she’d ever had.
She pulled her hands away and sighed. Sometimes she wished that she could’ve stayed with Lord Sesshomaru, but he knew that leaving her in the village was Sesshomaru’s way of making sure she was safe. She knew that it had been for the best.
She made her way back to the hut, looking to see if Sesshomaru’s condition had changed at all. It seemed to be the same, so she turned back to go outside. She began to make her way towards the village. “I’m going to go to the village and get some food and medicine.”
“Very well. I’ll let you know if anything happens,” said Jaken.

Rin was looking through the various plants and herbs, placing them into her bundle. She smiled as she leafed through, pleased with her Lord’s progress and happy that she had managed to help him get through such a difficult time. She raised her head to survey the fields, looking to see if there were any other herbs that she could use. As she looked around, she noticed a pair of women that were staring at her. They were huddled close together, whispering fiercely and pointing at her. She looked at them close, and frowned when she saw the look in their eyes.
Their eyes were narrowed and behind them was a look of contempt that she’d never seen before in her life.
She quickly turned away from them, but began to notice that they weren’t the only ones giving her strange looks.
All of the workers in the fields were glancing at her, every chance they got, and their eyes weren’t very different from the looks she’d been getting from those women. Rising to her feet, she started towards Inuyasha and Kagome’s hut, ignoring the chill in her spine that came from the stares.
Peeking through the doorway, she saw Kagome sitting in front of the fire, poking at it with a stick. She slowly walked inside, hanging her head. Kagome turned her head, and smiled once she saw her. “Rin! Haven’t seen much of you lately. How are you?”
Rin knelt down beside her. “I’ve been doing okay.”
Kagome turned her attention back to the fire. “So, how’s the first aid going?”
“It’s going well. Lord Sesshomaru’s wounds have healed up nicely. But he still hasn’t wakened yet.”
“I see.” Kagome sat the stick down and placed her hand lightly on her stomach. “I get the feeling that this isn’t just a social call.”
Rin assumed that she meant that she hadn’t just stopped by to say hello. “No, uh, I came to talk to you.” She sat her bundle down and placed her hands in her lap. “I was gathering herbs in the fields today and I noticed that a lot of the villagers were giving me death stares. It really unnerved me.”
“Well, that’s understandable.”
“What, the feeling that I should be afraid?”
“Well, not just that, but them staring at you. You have to understand, Rin. To you, Sesshomaru may be your savior, but to all of the other humans in this village, he’s an enemy. The villagers that are giving you those looks probably see you as a traitor. The only reason they haven’t tried to run you out of the village is because Gin told them all that I gave you permission to treat him. They respect my opinion and my judgment, so you’re in luck there.”
Rin’s hands gripped her kimono tightly. “But I didn’t mean to offend anyone. I only wanted to help my Lord Sesshomaru.”
Kagome pulled herself closer and laid her hand on Rin’s shoulder. “I understand that. Inuyasha understands that. But the humans in this village don’t. All they know is what they’ve been raised to learn, and that is that demons are a human’s enemy.”
“Is there anything that I can do?”
Kagome nodded. “You can continue to do what you’ve been doing for the past few days. You can help Sesshomaru get better. He needs right now, and if I were you, I wouldn’t let those villagers keep me from doing something that was important to me as this is to you.”
Rin smiled. “Thank you, Kagome.” She stood up and picked up her bundle of herbs. “I’m going to keep doing my best. Lord Sesshomaru will be stronger than ever, I’ll see to it.”
Kagome flashed a smile. “There you go.”
Rin turned around and headed back toward the hut. She hadn’t gotten far when she noticed the two women that had been staring at her earlier. She ignored them and continued on her way. She was getting close when she saw Jaken standing at the end of the path, waiting for her return. She broke into a small run, and stopped short when she reached Jaken. “Is there something wrong, Master Jaken?”
Jaken grinned. “Lord Sesshomaru has awakened.”
Rin broke off into a run.

Rin stopped when she reached the doorway of the hut, pausing for a moment to catch her breath. She then straightened up, brushing her kimono and shaking her head. She then entered the hut, and stopped short when she saw what was standing before her.
Sesshomaru was on his feet, facing the wall with his back turned towards her. He was standing there quietly, perfectly still and not moving an inch. She could hear him breathe slowly, each breath slow, smooth, and controlled. She took a step towards him, quietly voicing the words, “Lord Sesshomaru?”
* * * * *
Sesshomaru was in darkness. He could feel his chest move. He could sense the earth around him, but as for actually seeing it, that continued to elude him. He tried to move, but his body refused. It would only allow him to lay there, alone in the dark void. Not moving, not speaking. It felt like an eternity, but he soon began to sense movement. He began to feel like he was being moved, but he didn’t know where. Soon, the movement stopped, and he began to sense that he was being carried. This went on for a while as well, until finally, he began to feel like he was being moved once more. Then, he felt like he was being laid to rest, and the movement ceased once again.
Still stranded in darkness, he began to smell the scent of herbs, scents that he’d smelled during his travels, some of them he recognized as medicinal herbs that humans used. He could feel cold hands rubbing all over his body and smell the herbs right under his nose, like they were being applied to his body. He hated the cold feeling on his skin, the smell of the herbs as they drifted into his nose. But there was nothing he could do; his body continued to ignore his attempts to make it move. He was still shrouded in darkness, but he refused to give in to any thoughts of weakness and failure.
Time seemed to stand still in the dark void that he had been placed in, but soon, he began to feel his body respond to his attempts to make it move. He began to feel stronger as time passed by, and then, one day, a small ray of sunlight managed to force its way through the darkness.
His eyes opened.
He sat up, his breathing heavy and laboring.
He began to take deep breaths, attempting to slow his rapidly beating heart and quell the demonic presence inside of him that was trying to force its way to the surface.
As he began to calm down, he looked around at his surroundings. He saw that he was in a hut, alone.
The scents of the medicinal herbs that he’d smelled earlier were still right under his nose. Looking down, he saw that his chest was wrapped in bandages, the smell of medicinal herbs reeking through them like a bad taste in his mouth.
He could smell the scents of Jaken and Ah-Un from outside, the smell of medicine intertwined with those scents as well.
He slowly made his way to his feet, and began to meditate. He had obviously been unconscious for a while, and he began to realize that his body’s refusal to move was its way of trying to keep his demonic aura in check. He stood there quietly, calmly taking in his surroundings, letting his senses reawaken.
He sensed movement behind him, but he could sense that it was Jaken. He stayed still, confident that years of travel had taught Jaken not to bother him in times like this.
His confidence revealed itself to be true, as he began to sense that Jaken’s presence had moved away from where he was standing, but had not gotten any closer.
He continued to meditate. He had gotten ahold of his senses for the most part, but his body was still a little reluctant to obey.
He soon began to sense another presence, rapidly approaching. The scent, however, was that of a human. He wasn’t alarmed.
The human’s presence began to get closer, until finally, it was standing right behind him.
Sesshomaru frowned. The scent he smelled was one of familiarity, but where he remembered it from, he could not say. He continued to stay still, determined not to let this presence distract him from his task.
Then, he heard a voice. It was barely audible, but still, he could hear it clearly. “Lord Sesshomaru?”
It was the voice of a woman. From the sound of it, she was still young, probably just coming of age. He could sense that she was carrying something.
The fact that she had addressed him by his name made him uncomfortable. He slightly turned his head to look at her over his shoulder. He felt a sharp pain in his neck, keeping him from turning his head completely. Despite this, he’d still managed to catch a glimpse of a blue kimono.
Since his body still refused to cooperate fully, he turned his body around in order to face the young woman.
What he saw was what he’d originally thought: a young woman, just coming of age. She was carrying a bundle of herbs in her arms, and she was looking at him with a look of pure happiness in her eyes. Her scent ravaged his mind as his memory tried to place it in the proper place.
It was her scent that had led him here. Smelling this scent had caused his body to relax, almost as though it was confident that she would help bring him back.
She continued to stand there, looking at him with pleased eyes. Her face had now begun to ravage his memory with the same ferocity as her scent. She began to make her way toward him. He stood there, not moving, not speaking.
As she approached, he began to take closer notice of her body. The kimono she was wearing was tight-fitting, and she filled it out well. He could sense that his body was slightly aroused at the sight of the young woman. He quickly quelled those thoughts.
The woman was standing in front of him now. She was looking down at the ground, as though she were embarrassed. She quietly said, “You don’t remember me, do you?”
And in that instant, scent and memory clicked.
It was Rin. The young girl that he’d left in Inuyasha’s village all those years before had grown into the young woman he saw before him now.
“You underestimate my memory, Rin.”
