7 - Famous Monsters
-----
Raidennotaisho swept forward and looked down at Eikoseisui's still form. "You dare," he whispered again. Yudokuna remained where she had been standing and did not approach any closer to her brother or father. Sesshomaru thought that wise. Raidennotaisho did not appear to be in a mood to care who he harmed as long as carnage was caused. And, as Sesshomaru well knew, carnage came easily to Raidennotaisho.
Sesshomaru turned back to his mate. Inuyasha was glaring at the newcomer as if he would love nothing more than to decapitate this interloper as well; as if Sesshomaru couldn't smell the blood on him, and feel the way it saturated his brother's clothing. "Inuyasha," he murmured, catching his mate's eye. "Rin."
Inuyasha drew in a deep breath and nodded. Holding one arm close around his abdomen he raised the other to touch Sesshomaru's face wordlessly. Turning, he moved to where a concerned Shippou and a stoic-faced Rin waited.
Sesshomaru ignored Raidennotaisho, stepping forward to pick up Tenseiga from where Inuyasha had let it fall. He wiped the blade clean and slid it into its place at his side. He moved to pull Tetsusaiga from where it was still lodged in Eikoseisui's flesh, but found his motion blocked by a hand that wrapped around his wrist.
He regarded the hand coolly, raising his eyes to meet Raidennotaisho's gaze. "You dare," the storm demon demanded again.
Sesshomaru felt his temper flare. "He came here in pursuit of death. One who is mine has given it to him." He sank long fingers into the hand that held him, letting poison seep into the demon's flesh.
Raidennotaisho pulled his hand back, shaking it and hissing in annoyance. Fire sparked in his eyes and he reached out with the other hand, sending Sesshomaru flying backward with a cascade of lightning that exploded from his fist with an ear-shattering crack of thunder.
His fingers were still curled around Tetsusaiga's hilt, and Sesshomaru felt the sword hum softly against his hand. He wasn't sure if it was from the lightning or from the sword itself, but the sensation was matched by the steady humming presence of the sword's owner in the back of his mind. His mate was not concerned, because there was no other possible outcome to this confrontation than Sesshomaru's victory. Inuyasha's thoughts were so firm, Sesshomaru could almost hear them as words – I doubted before, but now I understand, and we are together in this and everything. My strength is yours, because you give me yours through your love, and there is nothing I wouldn't give back to you. So hurry up and kick his ass, because I want to take a bath.
Sesshomaru smirked. His fingers tightened around Tetsusaiga for a moment as he pushed himself to his feet, but he raised the sword and slid it into his obi beside its brother. He met his opponent's gaze, his own sliding red. Raidennotaisho read his intent and the wind was furious around them as they began to release their demonic forms.
In this form the storm demon was huge, larger than Sesshomaru himself, and Sesshomaru thought that Raidennotaisho would have towered over the Inunotaisho as well. Sesshomaru snarled and bared his own fangs. Poison miasma rose around them, and Sesshomaru dove at the other demon's unprotected abdomen. The storm demon's tail whipped the air into a fury and he bared teeth like jagged pieces of sky, snatching Sesshomaru by the back of the neck and shaking him like a dog with a rat.
Sesshomaru broke free, feeling the blood run down over his shoulders. He darted underneath the larger monster, snapping at his exposed throat. He sank teeth in, feeling the pulse of the demon's life between his jaws, and he clawed at the flesh of the demon's chest, drawing more blood.
Raidennotaisho roared in annoyance, and Sesshomaru ground his teeth closed, tearing into flesh as the larger demon batted him away with a huge paw. Raidennotaisho fixed him with a glare from one eye that crackled with energy.
The lightning was crackling over his fangs, and arcing down the length of his claws and he snapped at Sesshomaru, missing by so small a margin that he pulled away with a mouthful of silver fur. Sesshomaru turned back to his opponent and buried claws and fangs and poison into the storm demon's flesh. With a roar of annoyance, and the same paw as before he backhanded Sesshomaru, sending him flying again, through a stand of trees.
With a snarl, Sesshomaru pushed himself out of the wreckage and to his feet. He eyed his opponent carefully. Blood flowed from Raidennotaisho's wounds, but the demon did not act as if he was bothered by them in the slightest. Not that Sesshomaru expected him too, but it would have been nice to know that he'd made some impact, at least. He'd known. Raidennotaisho was an opponent that had outclassed his father. Sesshomaru couldn't hope to match the other demon's strength.
I kicked your ass when I wasn't half as powerful as I am now. That doesn't mean we can't take him. He could hear Inuyasha's voice, his mate's presence in his mind.
He blinked slowly, an idea occurring to him.
My strength is yours.
Sesshomaru grinned.
He took a deep breath, pulling his energy around him, pulling it back down into himself. He raised golden eyes to regard his opponent again, the demon towering over him even more so now. He drew Tetsusaiga from where it hung at his side. The sword flared to life and he gazed at the blade.
He felt the storm demon moving above him. Glancing up, he saw the demon's huge paw coming down toward him.
It felt... so rote. As if this was how things had always been going to happen, and he crouched and leapt up, Tetsusaiga singing in his hands. The sword pierced the flesh of Raidennotaisho's leg, slipping up, through flesh and bone and sinew, and severed the limb from the demon's body.
Raidennotaisho screamed in anger and shock as he fell to his side. Sesshomaru's left arm ached for a moment in sympathy as he pursued his opponent, pressing forward, using the demon's distraction to easily bypass his snapping jaws and bury the sword in his eye, to the hilt, pressing Tetsusaiga back into the demon's brain. Lightning sparked around him, feeling hotter as if sensing the impending end of its master, and Sesshomaru grit his teeth against the burning.
The storm demon thrashed for a moment, caught in the throes of death. Sesshomaru calmly waited until the body beneath him stilled completely before he pulled his fang free and, with a careless gesture, turned from his defeated opponent and leapt down from the body.
He felt Inuyasha's eyes on him, his mate's regard warm in his mind, and he raised his eyes to find Inuyasha grinning at him. Sesshomaru walked over to him unsteadily. His kimono was charred and the skin on his arms was burned raw, but he wrapped his arms around his mate's shoulders and pulled him close.
There was silence all around them. But it couldn't last, and Sesshomaru found his attention drawn unwillingly back to their audience as he felt Inuyasha tense.
Nanshoku had approached them, her eyes appraising them. Sesshomaru knew he and Inuyasha weren't really in any condition to continue to fight his rivals, but it would likely be necessary. They were vulnerable now, a situation which begged for an attack. He snarled softly, and Inuyasha's fingers closed over his where they were still wrapped around Tetsusaiga's hilt.
Nanshoku bared teeth at them in a parody of a smile. "You think you are safe now that Raidennotaisho is dead? You think you are powerful because you have killed Eikoseisui? You are weak. Your blood is tainted and should be wiped from the line of rulers." She crooked her fingers and flung darts of poison at them.
Sesshomaru stepped forward and caught her attack across his forearm. "You should know better than to think you can harm me with such tricks," he taunted her. Inuyasha snarled in agreement, coming around his brother with Tetsusaiga at the ready and swinging it at Nanshoku.
She dodged to the side with a dark laugh. "Your strike is too slow, halfbreed." She flung poison at them again, and again Sesshomaru moved to shield his brother so that the attack fell harmlessly against him. Nanshoku narrowed her eyes in annoyance. "Everything you are is unnatural," she taunted Inuyasha. "Be courteous and die."
Face bloody and one hand still trying to hold his abdomen together, Inuyasha snorted. "Lady, that's not going to happen. So why don't you shut the fuck up and get out of here?"
She laughed. "Do you think I am the only one? Perhaps I will just sit and wait for someone else to do the work for me." She stepped back and gestured around the clearing. "Even a useless insect like Hotaru would find the opportunity hard to pass up."
"You insist on speaking for me," Hotaru chided her from somewhere off to the side. "Perhaps you should examine your supposed allies before you speak on their behalf."
Nanshoku looked up in wary surprise.
Hotaru was nowhere to be seen, but Yudokuna and Gaiko stood well within sight. They glanced at each other at Hotaru's words.
"I have no interest myself in taking part in any fighting," Yudokuna said thoughtfully, her eyes casting over Sesshomaru and Inuyasha. "But I am indebted to you this day, my Lords." She turned to regard the bodies of her un-mourned kinsmen before casting a sly smile on Nanshoku. "Should you have any task with which you require but the slightest assistance, I am in a generous mood and would grant you such a boon."
Sesshomaru allowed her offer to hang in the air for a moment, Nanshoku regarding the other demoness with something akin to fear, before he responded. "While your generosity is unparalleled, Yudokuna, I can think of no task that I would require the assistance of your skills to accomplish." Inuaysha softly snorted his agreement.
Though the insult was not well veiled enough that she could even pretend to ignore it, Yudokuna laughed. "Another time, perhaps." She gathered power around her and sped away to the north, to explore the kingdom now fully hers.
"And now, I suppose it is my turn." Gaiko stepped forward, regarding Nanshoku with a disparaging eye as he paced toward her. She shrank from him, but did not run. He spared a glance for Sesshomaru as he said, "I owe you nothing, Western Lord, and I believe that I do you no favor now, as you could dispose of this," he gripped Nanshoku by the back of the neck, "however you pleased, and with ease.
"But it has been a long day, and I would rather not continue to stand around and watch the future be decided by battles of power. " He pulled Nanshoku up roughly, even as she hissed in protest. "I will take this, and we will go back to the south."
Sesshomaru inclined his head. "Take your burden and go, Gaiko of the South. There will be no more battles today."
Behind him Inuyasha sighed quietly in relief. He reached out and tangled his free hand in the folds of Sesshomaru's kimono. "Can we go inside now? 'Cause I really want a bath, and you really need one."
Sesshomaru watched as Gaiko disappeared between the trees, Nanshoku in tow, before he turned to Inuyasha and smiled. "Yes," he replied, simply, and Inuyasha grinned.
"Come on then," he growled, and, dragging Sesshomaru after him, led the way back into the fortress.
-----
Everyone else had to be reassured before they could slip away of course, but Inuyasha discovered in that moment how much he appreciated Rin's maturity.
When they entered the fortress where Shippou waited with Rin, Taian, and Radomir, Rin took one look at Sesshomaru and said evenly, "You will live?"
Sesshomaru smiled, the slow, full expression that Inuyasha had only ever seen him give to Rin. "Yes."
She nodded. Turning to the others, she made a peremptory gesture. "Give them space. Lord Sesshomaru needs to rest." When Radomir would have moved past her to question Sesshomaru, she snatched him by the sleeve and pointed him in the opposite direction.
Sesshomaru laughed softly all the way to the bathing chamber. Once there, however, his attention turned to his mate. Inuyasha had to sit in the water for a moment before he could remove his kosode; the cloth was plastered tightly to his skin with dried blood. Sesshomaru was bleeding less, but the skin on his arms and hands was burned black in places. As he waited for the warm water to soak through the dried blood, Inuyasha examined his brother's hands. Sesshomaru patiently humored him, and made soft sounds of annoyance when he could not put his hands in the water to assist Inuyasha.
The bleeding in Inuyasha's side had slowed to a sluggish pace, and with firm swipes of his tongue Sesshomaru attended the wound. Inuyasha lay back, seated on the side of the bathing pool. He let his mind drift as Sesshomaru bent over him, and he tangled his bloodied fingers in the demon's gore spattered hair. When his mate paused, Inuyasha pushed himself up to find that the ragged looking wound was no longer bleeding. It would heal well, given time and rest.
Inuyasha reached for Sesshomaru then, washing his mate's hair. He then spent several moments licking the flesh on the demon's arms and wrapping them in soft cloths smothered in ointment. He was well aware he was being as bad as Kagome with his fretting, he didn't need Sesshomaru to tell him so, and it suddenly occurred to him that they hadn't spoken a word to each other since coming down to the bath. Looking up, he met his mate's gaze.
Sesshomaru was watching him with a joyful glint in his eyes. He leaned forward, Inuyasha leaning to meet him, and they kissed, a gentle meeting of lips and a slow tasting of each other.
"Well," Inuyasha was the first to break the silence. "I knew you'd kick his ass."
"It was your strength that allowed me to do so."
Inuyasha nodded easily, and Sesshomaru laughed again at his brashness. "Just don't forget," the half demon cupped his brother's face in his hands, "it's a package deal." The golden eyes looked up at him. "You gave me the strength to face Eikoseisui."
Sesshomaru smiled still, and wordlessly leaned into Inuyasha, seeking his lips again. They kissed languidly for several moments before rousing themselves from the reverie of their love to finish washing.
Inuyasha held a yukata for his brother, wrapping it around Sesshomaru before pulling out one for himself as well and leaving the bloodied mess of their clothing in a heap on the floor.
Sesshomaru frowned. "That troublesome, self-righteous idiot ruined your kimono."
Inuaysha glanced back at his mate with a grin as he lifted Tetsusaig and Tenseiga from where they had been placed. "That's what's bugging you?"
The demon glowered at him and huffed softly. "It pleased me to see you wear it."
Inuyasha leaned into him. "I'll get another one," he murmured, leaning up to kiss the demon's chin. "Now come on." The swords collected, Inuyasha led the way to their room, Sesshomaru trailing far enough after to enjoy keeping his eyes on his brother.
Arriving, Sesshomaru sat on the bed, watching Inuyasha set the swords on their stand. Coming to the bed, Inuyasha leaned over his brother, Sesshomaru leaning back to accommodate him until they were spread out over the bed. With a sigh, Inuyasha lay down om Sesshomaru's chest, and the demon raised his tender arms to wrap them around his mate.
They were asleep within moments.

EpilogueThe winter sun shone warm but weakly down upon them as Rin stood before her Lord with bowed head.
Sesshomaru sighed softly. "And, after all that, you are leaving me." He reached as if to touch her hair, but it was bound back for her journey and he touched her cheek instead. "Are you truly ready for this?"
Rin nodded. She hefted her pack and slung it across her back. Taian and Inuyasha chatted a short distance away, giving her some privacy with her Lord. Inuyasha glanced over and winked at her.
Rin looked up into Sesshomaru's cool, golden eyes. "I am not leaving; not really. But there are some things I need to learn. People I need to talk to." She swallowed, wondering if he would guess her true purpose, but added anyway, "I need to ask something of Kohaku."
Sesshomaru raised a single eyebrow at her in question.
She sighed deeply. "You told me that you will always be here for me, and you're right." She looked away for a moment. "But I will not always be here for you."
Sesshomaru's gaze softened. "It is not a promise I would ask of you."
She nodded wordlessly. That was not the point.
He understood. "Safe journey, my Rin." They had embraced already, but he reached now for her shoulder and straightened the fall of her haori as if to remind himself that he was not sending her defenseless into the mouths of wolves. He had saved her from just such a place, and she wasn't sure she could ever tell him fully what that meant to her. But then, wasn't that what this journey was about?
She smiled. "I will see you again."
Sesshomaru smiled as well. "I will look forward to it."

Some final notes:
- The story is complete as of 11/2013. The PDF version is now available at my website and the most recent edited versions of each chapter are now posted here at AFF, which includes a new scene added in chapter 3. The writer's commentary is also availabe at my website.
- I have one more installment in this series planned. Because I have gotten so very bad at writing things in a timely manner, I have decided to not post that story at all until it is finished. It is tentatively titled "Reunion" and will involve Sess & Inu (& other characters) reuniting with Kagome in modern times. If you want to be notified when (if) it gets written, please e-mail me to be added to the update list.
Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed!! Your reviews and comments are always appreciated. Happy Thanksgiving this week, to those who are so inclined, and a safe and blessed holiday season to all in the coming months. =]
