Chapter 7 - Calm before the storm
As Kagome and Inuyasha headed back around towards the entrance of Kaede's hut, Inuyasha picked up the fresh scent of Sango's tears, though he wasn't worried because even though he had been tuning their conversation out to focus on Kagome, he had been able to hear the fact she and Miroku were talking, meaning the houshi had come to and was doing just fine. Gesturing to Kagome that they should be quiet, the pair delicately slipped back inside the hut, and were greeted by the sight of Sango and Miroku embracing.
"Ahem..." Inuyasha teased in a throat-clearing fashion, which caused Sango to spring away from Miroku in surprise and embarrassment while Kagome slapped the hanyou on the arm for his lack of manners. Like he gave a shit about manners right then.
"Glad we're all one big happy family again," he began sarcastically, narrowing his eyes at the monk. "But Miroku, you still owe Kagome an apology."
Said miko glanced Inuyasha's way in surprise, though the houshi did not look taken aback by his demand.
"You are absolutely right, Inuyasha." Miroku agreed, climbing to his feet as Sango stood up beside him.
He then proceeded to walk over to Kagome, who was still wearing her tank top, Inuyasha's claim on full display as she hadn't bothered pulling her hair forward to hide it a second time. Stopping at a polite distance in front of the miko, Miroku made no attempt to grab her hands, which he would have normally done were it not for the death glare being sent his way by a pair of amber eyes. Instead, he bowed lowly in respect, his angle clearly acknowledging Kagome as his superior. Stunned, mostly because though it had happened before, Kagome thought she would likely never get used to being bowed to in such a fashion, she barely had time to react, nodding her head in return.
"My humblest apologies, Kagome-sama." Miroku began, glancing briefly between the miko and hanyou. "And you as well, Inuyasha. I beg of both of you forgiveness for my foolishness. I had never intended for my actions to cause either of you such...complications." he finished delicately.
"I forgive you." Kagome answered in typical Kagome fashion, casting a sidelong glance Inuyasha's way which caused the hanyou to mutter a barely audible "Keh." before turning away to hide the sudden rosy hue to his cheeks. "And Inuyasha forgives you, too." Kagome translated, unable to mask her grin as she glanced Sango's way.
"At least it appears..." Sango stated comically in that moment, "...that you two have worked things out."
Kagome took her turn blushing, then, though she didn't deny it as she glanced Inuyasha's way once more before awkwardly changing the subject as she reached for her backpack, asking politely if they could all excuse her for a moment so that she could get dressed. Readily complying, everyone vacated the hut to allow the young miko to change, and it was only a couple of minutes later that she joined them outside. Now that her queasiness was finally over, Kagome realized it was actually a really beautiful day.
It wasn't long before they were joined by Kaede and Shippou, the kitsune having run off to retrieve the elderly miko when Kagome had screamed after Sango's attack on Miroku. The aging priestess seemed a bit winded from her hurried return, though any actual panic she might have been feeling at Shippou's initial summons was immediately doused by the way all four remaining members of the inu-tachi were standing around looking more awkward and guilty than anything else. But just because everyone was accounted for, and the houshi did not appear to be seriously injured, that didn't mean that Kaede was no longer concerned, considering what Shippou had told her when he'd first rushed up to her in the herb field.
Looking back and forth between everyone with worry and anxiety shining in her good eye, the elderly miko settled her gaze on Inuyasha and asked, "What is this young Shippou tells me of the houshi's tea making Kagome act drunk?" She might not know exactly what was going on, but she had seen the anger in Kagome's eyes for herself, and if it was the result of some foul play by Miroku's hand...
Kaede had a right to be brought up to speed and her obvious worry put to rest, so it was silently agreed in that moment as Kagome and Inuyasha glanced between each other that a condensed version of last night's events needed to be recapped, explaining briefly that Miroku had made a 'special' tea for Sango but that Kagome had drank it instead. After all, if they were going to go forward with being mates, then that wasn't the sort of thing that should be kept secret from any of their friends, and the aging priestess definitely qualified as a friend in Kagome's book. Since Shippou had been within earshot throughout her argument with Miroku, the future-born miko wondered in that moment how to properly explain things to the child in a way he'd understand, but her worries were proven unnecessary when he leapt up into her arms and took a deep breath, a huge grin breaking out over his face. He could smell her mating mark and new precisely what it meant. He also happened to know that Inuyasha had been pining after Kagome for a while now. So even though Shippou was too young to understand everything that had taken place, it was enough for him to know that Kagome had drank something that had made her want to mate with Inuyasha, and since Inuyasha had already wanted to mate with her anyway, they had mated. It was rather clear-cut as far as the kitsune was concerned, whose only true worry had been wondering what had happened to make Kagome so upset when she had startled them all by barging into the hut flaming mad. Now that he knew Kagome was unharmed, he wasn't bothered by her sudden change in status within their group. In fact, much to the hanyou's chargin and everyone else's amusement, the young kitsune actually looked Inuyasha in the eye in that moment and said it was about damn time he got his head out of his ass.
Kaede seemed the least understanding and forgiving for the monk's irresponsible actions, but even she could see the love the hanyou and miko shared for each other, and after a quick, heartfelt inquiry directed Kagome's way as to whether or not she was truly all right, to which the younger miko assured her that she was, Kaede gave the couple her blessing, stating that although the world at large would for the most part not approve of their joining, they would receive no such animosity with her, and would continue to be welcome at any time. She had always known those two would end up together, she had just assumed it was going to wait until after their quest was over.
Inuyasha was truly touched by Kaede's words, having silently feared whether or not the old miko was going to cast them out. He realized then that he should have known better, but having spent his whole life alone in a world that rejected him for his mixed heritage, it was sometimes hard to remember that he did have people in his life who accepted him for who and what he was. Asking Kagome briefly if she wanted to go back home first before they headed out, to inform her mother of their new relationship as well, the miko answered with a hesitant no, telling Inuyasha that she wanted some time to think about how to tell her family. He supposed he could understand that. It would probably be too embarrassing to tell her mother how she had brazenly attacked him, and if her grandfather ever found out she had been under the influence of any kind of a potion, no doubt it would immediately be branded his fault, no matter what either of them tried to say in his defense. So if Kagome wanted to wait until she could think of a way to soften the blow, Inuyasha would give her the time she needed and try his best not to let his mind screw with him, as if she were honestly afraid or ashamed to tell her family of their joining. He knew that wasn't the case. Or at least he hoped it wasn't.
And so it was decided in that moment, after their brief conversation with Kaede, that there was no real reason to delay getting back out on the road again. They had originally been planning on heading back out again that morning, anyway, and so they would keep to their schedule. As the group headed up the road, everyone paired up with their respective partners. Sango and Miroku - who had also shared with everybody the news of their engagement - were walking pleasantly side-by-side at the back of the group, the taijiya for once not feeling concerned over the monk's wandering hands. She had made him a deal while the others had been talking: so long as he refrained from groping anybody else, he was allowed to grope her in private. It was a compromise the lecher-at-heart had readily agreed to. As perverted as he was, it was true that Miroku loved Sango with all his heart, and he would never knowingly do anything that would upset her. He even admitted that in the past, half of the time he'd flirted with random village girls as dominantly as he had was in an attempt to make her jealous, to see if she would get jealous, as yet another means of finding out her true feelings for him. She had certainly always acted as if it'd bothered her, but then she'd also acted disgusted with him whenever he flirted with her directly, which could have just meant that she found his behavior deplorable as a holy man. That inability to read Sango's feelings had been what'd led Miroku to take such drastic measures as the love tea, though that was all water under the bridge now, as Kagome would say. Things had worked out well between Miroku and Sango, and...apparently...things had worked out well between Inuyasha and Kagome, as well.
Or so the future-born miko hoped, at least. As Kagome walked along side Inuyasha at the head of the group, she couldn't help the feeling that something important had been left unsaid. Not that she could really blame Inuyasha if there was some nuance to his feelings on the matter that hadn't been discussed yet. She certainly wasn't ready to fully face the ramifications of what'd happened since she wasn't ready to tell her mother, and she was definitely relieved that Inuyasha hadn't seemed to take offense at her request that they not tell her family right away. Kagome didn't regret being Inuyasha's mate, and she was trying her best not to feel ashamed of her bold actions, but it was definitely going to take some time before she felt comfortable actually discussing it openly. She had always been such a modest girl, and a part of her couldn't help still feeling humiliated that everyone knew she had more or less attacked Inuyasha like a banshee in heat, but it was because of Miroku's tea, which meant it wasn't really her fault and nobody was going to hold it against her. She was certain that once the situation was fully explained, her mother wouldn't be angry with her, either, but it was the explaining part that she was not looking forward to. All Kaede had needed to be told was that Miroku had mixed some special herbs together to find out if Sango loved him or not, and the elderly miko had understood perfectly, but with Mrs. Higurashi, things would need to be spelled out a little more black and white than that, since no such tea existed in their century. Kagome didn't like that idea one bit. She would much rather skim over the details, and confess to her mother that in the heat of the moment she and Inuyasha had become mates, and leave it at that. She might get scolded for her irresponsibility, but so long as she stressed the fact that they were in love, and more or less married by inu-youkai law, she was certain her mother would not be angry with Inuyasha or forbid them from ever seeing each other again. Kagome would be sixteen soon enough, which was the legal age for girls to get married in Japan, with parental consent. She was old enough to make her own decisions when it came to whom she loved. She was certain her mother would support her desire to pursue a committed relationship with the hanyou, but that didn't mean it wasn't still embarrassing to think about how she'd practically raped the poor guy. It was going to take her some time to come to terms with those memories.
```````````````````````````
The group traveled together in relative silence, all things considered, speaking back and forth mostly about their shared goal of defeating Naraku. Unfortunately, they hadn't heard any new rumors during their return trip to Kaede's about any jewel shard activity or possible leads to the dark hanyou himself, so they were presently engaged in what the future-born miko had referred to in the past as a wild goose chase, literally traveling from village to village in the hopes of possibly coming across valuable information. Inuyasha kept his nose to the wind on the off chance he might pick up even the faintest trace of Naraku's scent, not to mention any other demonic enemy that might try to get the drop on them for their jewel shards. Fortunately, the recent increase in random youkai activity that seemed to be plaguing them lately also seemed to be taking the day off, as they hadn't yet run into anything overly troublesome. Kagome definitely hoped they didn't have to jump into another fierce battle for at least a couple of days. She was still sore.
Glancing his mate's way for the umpteenth time as they continued to walk down the road, Inuyasha tried and failed once more to break the ice, unsure of what to say that wouldn't make the situation even more awkward. Judging by her expression, Kagome was clearly in her own little world, and he didn't want to disturb her thoughts, but he also didn't want to continue acting as though nothing had happened between them. Swiveling his ears backwards, the inu-hanyou could easily pick up the whispered conversation taking place between slayer and monk, as Miroku and Sango walked hand in hand while quietly making plans for their life together in a future, Naraku-free world. One could argue that it was foolish to daydream of such things, that they needed to keep their heads in the game and focus on the here and now, but Inuyasha understood all too well that while facing an enemy of Naraku's caliber, you couldn't afford to lose hope, and making plans for a future that took place after your enemy's defeat definitely kept you striving for a goal you had determination to achieve. They had to defeat Naraku, or else none of their dreams would come true. Of course, as the hanyou continued to think about it, he couldn't help the slight grin that found its way to his lips when he realized that one of his dreams - his most important dream, in fact - had already come true. Kagome was his. They could work out the details later. But then again, why should they wait until 'later' to at least discuss possible plans for their future? Where was the harm in speaking of their dreams, as Miroku and Sango were currently doing? The hanyou knew he wasn't a very talkative person, but Kagome was, at least under normal circumstances, and she would probably appreciate the fact that he was willing to be open and honest with her regarding such things. Even if she wasn't ready to talk about it just yet, Inuyasha figured it couldn't hurt to at least let her know that he would be ready to talk, whenever she was.
Looking her way again in that moment, Inuyasha was just about to open his mouth to say...something...when the not-so-innocent kitsune child currently hitching a ride in Kagome's arms suddenly took it upon himself to break the ice for him, abruptly reminding the adults of his presence as he bluntly asked the miko holding him, "So are you gonna have Inuyasha's baby?"
Kagome was so surprised by the unexpected question that she nearly lost her footing, stumbling a little before a clawed hand darted out to stabilize her. Sending Inuyasha an embarrassed yet grateful smile, the miko hesitantly glanced behind them to the couple walking a few paces back, exhaling in relief when it became apparent that Miroku and Sango had been too engaged in their own conversation to catch Shippou's question. Casting her eyes sideways a second time, Kagome nervously cleared her throat when Inuyasha met her gaze, an embarrassed but also mildly amused expression in his eyes.
"Not right now, she ain't." he answered for her, tapping his nose in a gesture that had Kagome's sudden worry melting away as quickly as it'd come.
"But you two are gonna have kids someday, right?" Shippou asked next, looking Inuyasha's way. Despite his knowledge on topics that Kagome considered too mature for a kid his age, there was an innocence shining in Shippou's eyes that compelled the hanyou to be nice to the runt. He didn't think Shippou was trying to tease him. It was a legitimate question, and one he regretfully didn't know how to answer, though Kagome beat him to it in that moment.
"We uh...we haven't discussed that yet, Shippou-chan." Kagome mumbled honestly, her cheeks warming more than a little.
"No time like the present." Inuyasha muttered to himself at a level too quiet for normal human ears, though the way Kagome immediately stumbled again before shooting him an incredulous glare quickly had him remembering that her hearing was no longer normal.
"Uh...crap. Sorry, I forgot you'd hear that." he started lamely, rubbing at the back of his head nervously. "I, uh...I meant no time like now to discuss it, not to...do it. Er...ya know...having kids, I mean...shit."
Glancing Kagome's way nervously, he was mildly relieved at the somewhat amused look in her eyes. The simple fact that he was still as uncomfortable openly discussing their new relationship as she was went a long way toward easing her mind, although she could also relent that it was a topic that should probably be discussed sooner rather than later. But before she could say anything, Inuyasha continued then, having taken a moment to calm his nerves.
"Look, I do think that subject needs to be broached, but I'm sure one thing we can both agree on is that whatever either of us wants, you should definitely not have a kid while we're still hunting Naraku. Even Miroku knows that, about Sango I mean, and if you've picked up any of their talkin' then you know they plan on waitin' until after Naraku's defeated. So if you wanna wait a while before talkin' 'bout any of that stuff with me, that's fine."
It wasn't fine, really, but he did understand that it was going to take her some time to truly get used to the fact that they were mates now. Since it was something he had been fantasizing about on a regular basis, it wasn't as hard for him to allow himself to think about his dreams in a more realistic setting. He'd been dreaming of having children with Kagome for a while now, and the only real overnight change that had happened for him was that no longer were those dreams outside the realm of possibility. But for all he knew Kagome hadn't ever given motherhood a second, or even first thought. He knew she loved him beyond a mere passing fancy, because otherwise she never would have come after him like she had, but that didn't mean she had actually spent countless nights awake mapping out a detailed fantasy involving a life by his side, raising his children. Especially since, from what he could gather from the conversation they had had, she had previously been under the impression that the majority of his heart still belonged to Kikyou. That was a misconception he would gladly prove false, night after night. Of course, those types of thoughts weren't really helpful at the moment, and would probably bring the whole subject of 'children' into the spotlight, if they weren't careful. Apprehensively glancing Kagome's way once again, Inuyasha was relieved when he saw that the look in her eyes seemed more contemplative than upset.
Then she spoke, her words completely throwing him for a loop.
"So...my increased senses are a result of the mating."
It was the hanyou's turn to stumble over his own feet, then, though a quick swivel of his ears told him that Sango and Miroku were still too deeply involved in each other to pay them any attention. Either that, or the houshi and slayer were both better at concealing their awareness than he expected, since the Miroku he knew wouldn't pass up an opportunity to tease him over losing his balance. If they had seen his misstep, they were doing good to offer him the privacy he and Kagome deserved, and offering them the same to the best of his ability, he trained both of his ears on the miko beside him as he guiltily cleared his throat.
"I'm sorry..." he apologized sincerely, his ears drooping slightly as he glanced her way before shifting his gaze to stare at his feet. "I was going to tell you, but I got sidetracked when we tried to figure out what'd made you sick, and then when you realized what had caused it, all I could think about was laying into Miroku. Then after everything else we talked about, I guess I forgot you didn't know that."
That's not all she doesn't know... he reminded himself in that moment, starting to question whether or not it was really a good idea to leave her unaware of the existence of soul bonds. But she was still so flustered, and just look at her reaction to the mention of children! Sure, it was a big decision, but he had already more or less told her that she was his mate for the rest of her life, so the concept of children representing any form of deeper commitment didn't really apply when she couldn't leave him either way. If she was still so shaken up just by the simple reminder that they were basically married now, and would be for the rest of her life, he didn't even want to think about how crazy she'd get if he dared to bring up, 'oh, by the way, you have the option of becoming virtually immortal and sharing the centuries with me, witnessing everyone else around you grow old and die'. No...Inuyasha decided in that moment that it was definitely still a good idea to hold off on that particular conversation, at least for a few days if nothing else. Kagome had just awoken to find her life changed forever that very morning, after all. Give the girl a chance to adjust to one shock at a time.
"When I...marked you, I mixed our blood a little bit and infused some of my youki within your body. Just enough to form the mark and brand it as mine. Any female youkai would get a bit of her mate's youki just the same, because his energy in her and in the mark is what labels her as his, but because you're human, youki fused into a human's body is gonna make you a bit stronger. It's not too much youki, so you won't notice many changes, but sharper senses is one of 'em." he explained in that moment, testing the waters as far as how she'd react to the notion of his youki in her system in any form.
It was a lot to take in on top of everything else, but the miko figured she couldn't rightfully get angry with him for the surprise. Kagome distinctly remembered cutting Inuyasha off that morning when he'd gotten that overwhelming, intense look in his eyes, so thinking about it, she decided she wouldn't hold that one against him, although she still couldn't shake the feeling that there was something else perhaps even more important that he still hadn't told her yet. Maybe she was just being paranoid, or maybe it was her own nervous flustering that was making him apprehensive of how she would react to whatever news he'd yet to share with her. Closing her eyes for a moment and doing her best to let her tension melt away, Kagome gave Shippou a little squeeze before putting him down on the ground and telling him to go play with Kirara, who was taking up the very rear of the group, trotting along behind Sango and Miroku.
"Inuyasha..." she started then, mentally cursing herself when she realized she could already feel her cheeks warming from an oncoming blush at the thought of what she was about to say. "I'm not going to act like there's nothing to talk about, between you and I. I know there's still a lot we need to get resolved, if we really are life-mates now, but this whole thing is just so overwhelming, not to mention embarrassing...what everyone knows." She kept her voice low, knowing her hanyou mate would be able to hear her whispered words.
Realizing she didn't want to risk the others overhearing, Inuyasha replied in a tone just as quiet, "Embarrassing, what everyone knows? Hells yeah, but it really ain't no big deal unless you let it be. Ya know it's only a matter of time before the letch tries to grill me for details, but the only answer he's gonna get is my fist on his head, though I'll avoid the spot Sango clobbered till it heals." Kagome chuckled a little at that. "But in private, Kagome, between you 'n' me, I ain't embarrassed to think about what happened, and you shouldn't be either."
Hell, thinking about the way Kagome'd had him at her mercy, his body was reacting in a whole different way, although letting her know that would probably be embarrassing for the miko, too, so he would keep that little factoid to himself until she was more able to discuss it openly. At least she had admitted that she knew they still had a lot to talk about, even if it was apparent she wasn't quite ready to sit down and have that discussion just yet. But that was definitely a good sign, not to mention the fact that she hadn't started screaming at him for 'infecting' her with his youkai blood. Telling her briefly that he would be ready for her, whenever she decided she was ready to openly discuss and express their new relationship, Inuyasha let the subject go for the time being, focusing instead on getting his heated blood back under control. Of course, on top of everything else, his body would just have to go and decide that it wanted a recap of last night's events. He was no stranger to sexual pleasure, but last night had been the first time a second person had been involved, and he highly doubted he would be able to find much satisfaction flying solo ever again.
One thing at a time... he ordered himself, taking a few deep breaths through his nose.
Because Kagome was no longer affected by the tea, or aroused of her own accord, her scent no longer called out to him like a bitch in heat, and instead, he actually found her natural fragrance to be pleasant and relaxing. Of course, she also still smelled strongly of their joining, as did he, but instead of that scent getting his body all fired up, he found comfort in the knowledge that she was his. Regardless of whatever issues were still lingering between them that hadn't yet been resolved, she was his and he was hers, and that was the way it was going to stay. It didn't take long for the tension to melt out of his muscles, as he subconsciously relaxed the posture he didn't even realize had become as rigid as the rod in his pants. Of course, it didn't help that he was presently without a fundoshi, but in all the commotion it had honestly slipped his mind. He would rectify that situation when they stopped at the next village.
Exhaling once more with a bit of a sigh on the tail end of it, Inuyasha glanced Kagome's way when he felt her eyes upon him, as she shifted her gaze in his direction. Her expression was thoughtful, as though rolling something over in her mind, and then she smiled; the first true smile he'd seen her wear all day. Reaching out without the slightest hint of hesitation, Kagome grabbed his hand with her own, her smile immediately growing when his reaction to the touch was to curl his fingers and give her hand a little squeeze, a grin of his own on his lips and in his eyes as they continued to walk up the road in front of their friends, hand in hand.
