Chapter 6:
Kagome stood looking down over the village with a sad look on her face. She felt the pull of her wings and was uncertain if she would return here after her quest was complete. Schooling her features she turned to the rest of her group. Everyone’s eyes were on her, waiting for direction. Sesshomaru’s eyes were so cold as they watched her. “Some ground rules before we get started,” her gaze swung to Sango and Miroku. “Sesshomaru-sama is the leader of the group. Any direction he gives is to be obeyed without question.” Sango glanced back at Sesshomaru before nodding. Kagome’s eyes also centered on the demon lord, “There are only two things I react to without thought or question; jewel shards and the children. Their safety comes before anything else, including myself. Despite your vow, if either of the children are in danger at any time, even if I am also in danger, you save them.” Sesshomaru’s eye’s narrowed and he barred his fangs at her. Kagome’s eyes narrowed at the challenge. “I will demand nothing else, but this I refuse to back down on. The safety of the children comes before anything else!” They stood facing off for a moment before Sesshomaru relented and nodded his agreement. Kagome relaxed a bit and closed her eyes. “Thank you.” “Which direction are we going to travel in?” Miroku’s questions had Kagome opening her eyes again. Kagome looked to Sesshomaru who still had his eyes pinned to her. “West,” Sesshomaru’s right eyebrow rose slightly. “Deep in the western lands is our destination. We shall go past the forests and the White Moon Palace, across the mountains and, even further west, toward the great sea. There is a remote temple there where I must pray for three days before I will be visited by another tenshi who will grant me my wings as well as the rest of my powers.” Rin squealed in delight. “Rin has not been to the Moon Palace in a long time!” Ah-Un voiced agreement with a growl that distinctly sounded like a laugh. Kagome smiled at the child’s excitement. Sesshomaru’s eyes scanned the group before turning and walking toward the western lands. Kagome secured her quiver over her cloak and quickly followed after him, falling two steps behind. Shippo, Rin, and the others fell in behind them. Kagome glanced back at the group and smiled before facing forward. They continued through the forest for some time in relative silence. Kagome would glance back at the children every once and a while to check on them. There were talking quietly about flowers or crayons or other things they were seeing with Ah-Un walking next to them. Kagome would smile at them before returning her gaze forward. Sango and Miroku would glance at each other in question but would remain silent about their thoughts. The only noise came from Miroku’s staff, the slight tingling of the rings. Kirara was curled up in Sango’s arm resting. Jaken was sulking and muttering to himself. Sesshomaru was as cold and silent as ever. His steps never wavered and his eyes were fixed forward. Kagome could feel his aura flare every once and a while to ward off some lower level demons. Kagome studied him in silence. No she wasn’t usually a quiet person, mostly upbeat and talkative during their travels. Today she was deep in thought about the Demon Lord. She followed at a respectable two paces back from him and he never once turned his head back to check on anyone in the party. Kagome wondered what made him so cold. Kouga was a demon prince and he was high energy and open with his emotions. She remembered meeting other demons of royalty and could never remember them being so separated from themselves. Kagome suddenly stopped and got a faraway look on her face. Sango and Miroku immediately grabbed their weapons and readied for a fight. Kirara transformed and waited for instruction from her lady. “Jewel shards coming this way. They’re tainted. This isn’t a friendly.” Kagome turned to the children and already saw them getting hurried, with Ah-Un and Jaken, off the path and out of immediate danger. Kagome strung her bow and waited until they were close enough to sense the auras of the demons. “Snake demons; feels like a whole colony of them.” Sesshomaru nodded in agreement, his sword already unsheathed. “Sango,” Kagome called out, “on your left,” she nodded before letting out an attack. “Hiraikotsu!” The boomerang left her hand and started to glow a dull pink as it cut down everything in its path like a sharp knife. They all heard the screams of 3 or 4 demons cut down before it returned to Sango’s hand still radiating a pale pink. Kagome readied a bow pointing just past the demon lord and into the surrounding trees. The second the arrow left her string it exploded in a bright white light. Sesshomaru’s brow raised as it passed him. The arrows aura, peaceful and reassuring, touched him in a comforting brush of power. “FoxFire!” Kagome turned toward the children as Ah-Un let loose a blast of lightning and fried the demon that slithered up behind them. Shippo’s FoxFire formed a barrier around himself and Rin. Kirara took a stand next to the children in case any more stray demons showed up. Kagome concentrated once more on the battle at hand and felt the demons coming in on the right side of the group. “Miroku, on the right.” Miroku removed the prayer beads on his right hand to release the wind tunnel. All the demons, branches, rocks, and other debris were drawn into the void. Suddenly the void seemed to close a little and his tunnel became more precise as it drew in the demons that were clinging to the trees. His hand radiated a light purple as the tunnel became stronger and the demons were wrenched from the trees. Miroku quickly covered his cursed hand with the beads again before looking round cautiously. Kagome and Sesshomaru looked around with eyes narrowed. Kagome’s bow at the ready she focused on the trees in front of them. Sesshomaru. He nodded in understanding before taking a step in front of her to face the oncoming threat. “Ssstep away from the girl Sssesshomaru. Ssshe is ours to claim. What power we would possessss with her at our side! ” Two snake demons slithered into sight. Their bodies were that of snakes but they could hold the top part of their bodies upright and had two arms. They were greenish gray and had bright red eyes. Kagome’s lip curled up in disgust. Sesshomaru remained silent at their demands, waiting for their move. They are the ones with the jewel shards. The one of the left is in the head but the other’s is in his tail. The demons hissed at Sesshomaru before one of the snakes lunged at him. Sesshomaru met the demon head on with his blade. As soon as the sword penetrated skin the demon seemed to swell before exploding in chunks all over the path. Kagome saw the other demon trying to edge close enough to get the other shard and rushed forward to grab it first. As she bent down to retrieve the shard she felt the demon upon her. In a rush of movement she drew her sword, which was immediately surrounded by the same bright white light as her arrows, and sliced the demon in two at the neck. Sesshomaru was at her position in an instant, shoving her behind him as he quickly sliced into the demon’s body to destroy it. Kagome laid her hand on his sword arm and squeezed gently. “Thank you.” She whispered low so that only he could hear her words. She bent down to retrieve the jewel shards from the demon’s remaining flesh. As soon as she touched them they turned bright pink. She quickly placed the shards into the bottle that still hung at her neck. As she straightened her cloak she looked around to check on the others. Sango was staring at her weapon with a slight frown on her face. Miroku was staring at his hand like a miracle just happened. Shippo was still standing under the barrier he created with Rin. Kagome hurried over to the children. “You can put the barrier down now. All the demons are gone.” Shippo sniffled a little as his lower lip quivered. “I don’t know how oka-san!” Kagome smiled gently at him before placing a hand on the barrier of blue flames. It radiated a bright blue before it slowly died out. Shippo collapsed into Kagome’s arms as soon as the barrier faded. Kagome picked him up and cuddled him close to her chest. Rin came up to them and laid her head on Kagome’s shoulder. “Is Shippo going to be okay?” Kagome smiled and nodded. “He is just really tired from using so much energy to protect you. He’ll sleep for a while and then he’ll be much better.” Rin smiled at her as she watched Shippo sleeping in Kagome’s arms. Kagome stood with Shippo cradled in one arm and took Rin’s hand with her other before walking them over to the rest of the group. Ah-Un and Jaken followed behind silently. Jaken looked quite scared of the miko and kept his mouth firmly shut. “Sesshomaru-sama? Would you object to riding for a bit and letting the little ones rest?” Sesshomaru surveyed the group for a moment before nodding silently. Sango and Miroku got on the still transformed Kirara. Kagome picked Rin up and set her easily on Ah-Un’s saddle. She settled Shippo in front of her. Rin wrapped her arms loosely around him to ensure he would not fall. Rin smiled brightly up at Kagome. She smiled back and placed a kiss on her forehead before moving away and letting Jaken mount Ah-Un behind Rin. Kagome petted Ah-Un for a moment before going to stand by Sesshomaru, bow slung over one shoulder. He raised his brow in question. “I’m a tenshi now, Sesshomaru-sama. I can run to keep up.” Sesshomaru turned and took off toward the west. Kagome waited a moment to give her friends a huge smile before taking off after him. She heard Kirara and Ah-Un taking off and trailing behind a bit. She caught sight of Sesshomaru in front of her and smirked. He was only going at half-speed. For most demons it was impressive but she knew he could go faster, she’d seen it. She sped up until she was almost flush with him. Sesshomaru glanced at her out of the corner of his eye before increasing his speed. Kagome smiled to herself at the game before adjusting her bow across her chest, dropping her hands to her sides and put on a burst of speed to pass him. Sesshomaru sped after her immediately. They continued to increase their speed until finally they were both going all out next to each other. Kagome could no longer hear Kirara or Ah-Un but she loved the run. The air rushing past her felt almost like flying. It provided a temporary relief from the pull of her wings. She let out a laugh as she slowed to a stop in the middle of a large clearing. She sat down in the field and sighed. “That was so much fun! I know that you could have gone faster with your demon cloud or the orb thing but it was so exhilarating!” Sesshomaru sat below a tree some distance away and supported one arm on his upraised knee. “I agree. This Sesshomaru has not run like that in quite some time.” Kagome smiled at him slightly before looking around. The clearing was beautiful. There were random patches of flowers all over and she could see the reflection of a stream trough some trees just on edge of the clearing. “How much ground did we cover? I was so caught up in the excitement I have no idea how far we are.” Kagome looked at Sesshomaru for the answer. “They will not reach this location until just before nightfall. The Moon Palace is a seven day walk from here.” Kagome whistled quietly. “That’s a lot of ground. So what do we do until they arrive?” Kagome looked once more to Sesshomaru and smiled slightly. He had his eyes closed and his head tilted down a little. He was either asleep or meditating. Since Kagome could sense no flux in his aura since they arrived she assumed meditating. Kagome made her way over to Sesshomaru and began to take off her armor. She set it all carefully on the white cloak Kaede had given her. She wore a loose white tank top and a tight fitting black pair of leggings under the armor. Once she had stripped from her armor she retied the sword belt back around her waist. She arranged herself next to Sesshomaru and closed her eyes, her hands resting loosely on her knees.
***********************
As Kagome drifted into deep meditation she did not notice the Demon Lord’s eyes watching her, studying her. He observed her attire and smirked. While comfortable under the armor she wore, it was fairly revealing on its own. She looked almost like a demon sitting there, her power radiating off of her. When Sesshomaru looked into her aura his eyes widened slightly. The white light that surrounded her weapons isn’t just her power, but her aura. She was surrounded by a blinding white light as she meditated the light came closer to her body but more brilliant in its hue.
Sesshomaru snickered. The snakes from earlier were right. Whoever had her by their side and as their mate would be very powerful indeed. They would be able to stand with the demon counsel no matter their standing because of the kind of power she held. Kagome, The Tenshi Warrior, The Shikon Miko…. Sesshomaru closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the tree to await the arrival of the rest of the group. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
