Chapter 7: Blood
~*~*~
This is her fault, Sesshoumaru thought furiously with a suppressed growl as he glared at the scene in front of him with absolute discontent.
The taijiya…he would make her suffer.
Death was a far too simple punishment for what the human wench did to his mate and unborn pups.
Luckily, they had all survived, but it still didn’t change the fact that he had nearly lost them. If it wasn’t for the Tenseiga that his father gave him, then he would have…
Sesshoumaru couldn’t bear the thought of losing them. Despite his cold, impassive disposition, his emotional attachment to his mate and pups ran deeper than what anyone could perceive.
Kagome’s former companion was going to pay for her foolish little stunt. The taijiya was going to learn a very hard lesson about trying to take away anything that was his.
There would be no mercy for her punishment; a punishment craftily suggested by Katsutoshi in order to hurt the wench in much deeper way than what a physical punishment could ever do.
Sesshoumaru continued to glare down at the badly injured demon slayer from his sitting position on the large, red and gold silken pillow atop the great platform of his castle’s throne room.
The Taiyoukai nearly smirked in dark satisfaction as he watched the horrified expression of the taijiya below him while she watched Katsutoshi execute the last youkai guard that had stood next to her.
Katsutoshi smiled devilishly at Sango with his gleaming white fangs as he took the large, dangling pile of bloody guts that was held in his clawed hand and tossed them next to her with a loud, resounding slosh.
Sango stood unsteadily on her legs that were throbbing in sharp pain as she resisted the urge of disgust to wipe off the large blood droplets that had splattered on her dirtied kimono and face.
Sango swallowed uneasily before she mentally gathered her courage as she stared into the piercing grey eyes of the Captain of the Guard. Katsutoshi told her earlier that Sesshoumaru was going to make her suffer, and she wasn’t going to put it past the Taiyoukai to just let her die as easily as the others.
As much as Sango hate to admit it, she was actually very frightened as to what Sesshoumaru had in store for her.
“Now…I believe it’s your turn, taijiya.” Katsutoshi purred as he took a couple of steps forward to approach the defiant human; flicking off the thick, dripping blood from his claw onto the wooden floor.
“You’ve committed a horrible crime, one that warrants an even worse punishment than those guards. Thankfully, Lord Sesshoumaru has been so gracious to accept my humble suggestion and has agreed to let me deliver the punishment out to you, instead,” Katsutoshi continued as he stopped directly in front Sango, towering over her; wearing a deadly smirk upon his face.
Sango warily glanced from a smirking Katsutoshi, who stood in front of her, to a stoic Sesshoumaru, who sat a distance away on a platform behind the Captain.
Sango didn’t like where this was going…
“So you’re going to torture me to death?” Sango concluded as she boldly tilted up her chin at the dark haired inuyoukai towering over her.
Katsutoshi chuckled at the taijiya’s foolish display of defiance. Didn’t she know that they could smell the fear radiating from her?
Stupid girl.
“Torture? Yes, but not to death. Just until you’re deemed…useless,” Katsutoshi said vaguely as he continued to smirk deviously.
Sango narrowed her eyes at the grey eyed inuyoukai in front of her.
“What do you mean?” Sango asked suspiciously.
Katsutoshi chuckled again before he reached out and grabbed Sango’s chin; forcing her to look him dead in the eye.
“You’re a defiant, little human with too much pride to know your place. So, in order to break you, you’re going to go work for me,” Katsutoshi disclosed.
Sango jerked away from Katsutoshi as she angrily eyed the two inuyoukai in front of her.
“What…?!” Sango snapped.
“I can’t imagine the amount of money my patrons would pay to use an actual demon slayer. You’ll bring in a lot of good money for my brothel,” Katsutoshi continued.
It felt as though all of the air had been knocked out of Sango’s bruised lungs.
Sango glanced from one youkai to another as she felt a dizzying sensation start to take over her body.
She heard the horrible stories about what went on inside of a youkai brothel; things that even made her own skin crawl. Youkai had strange and atrocious sexual appetites; now Sango was going to become one of their prostitutes.
Suddenly, Sango felt nauseous.
“Y-you c-can’t…” Sango managed to choke out as her body shook with anger and fear.
This time Katsutoshi laughed haughtily.
“Do you think that this is an option? Such insolence…I’m going to enjoy breaking you,” Katsutoshi said as he watched a shocked Sango collapse to the floor and onto her knees.
This was a fate worse than death; especially for a female human.
No, she wasn’t going to go down like this. Sango had to fight her way out of it and if came down to begging in order to stop this fate…
Sango peered around Katsutoshi’s legs from her position on the floor, to glare at silent Taiyoukai behind him.
If what she saw back in her dungeon cell was true, if the Taiyoukai was indeed concerned about Kagome’s wellbeing then Sango had to play on his emotions in order to get out of this situation.
It was worth a try.
“Kagome wouldn’t allow this. You and I both know that she’ll be furious if she finds out what happened,” Sango stated directly to Sesshoumaru.
The Taiyoukai simply raised a delicate eyebrow, before he crossed his arms and narrowed his amber eyes at the taijiya below him.
“I have no intention of telling my mate about tonight’s occurrence. She will only know of your death, as you were killed by the guards on the roof last night. Their execution should at least bring her some level of comfort for her fallen comrade,” Sesshoumaru stated coolly as he glared at the insolent taijiya.
So, this is what they had planned.
They were going to fake her death and let Kagome believe that she died on the roof that night; trying to protect and free her.
They had no idea how much that would break the young miko’s heart.
“Kagome is never going to forgive you! No matter what you do to hide this, she’s going to find out eventually!” Sango snapped.
Kagome was already fragile, emotionally and physically, now they were going to completely devastate her best friend with the guilt associated by her fake death.
“You can’t do this…you’ll hurt her,” Sango implored as she felt tears start to form in her eyes.
Sesshoumaru rose gracefully from his seat on the pillow.
He had enough of this disgraceful, human wench. All he wanted to do was return to the warm, soothing comfort of his resting mate and their bed, now that things have settled.
“My mate is not your concern,” Sesshoumaru said with a low growl as he elegantly descended the stairs from the high platform.
As he crossed the gigantic throne room, adorned with silk in the colors of red, gold and pure white, he paused after he casually walked by Katsutoshi and didn’t bother to turn around to acknowledge the dark haired inuyoukai.
“We have discussed this before; do not make me retract my decision. Control her,” Sesshoumaru threatened.
“Of course, Oniichan,” Katsutoshi grinned as he gave a low bow, before the Taiyoukai proceeded to leave through the huge sliding doors, decorated with a large version of their family’s kamon.
The insolent taijiya would finally be removed from his castle and would be placed inside of Katsutoshi’s brothel in a village that was some distance away.
Sesshoumaru had one of his servants to notify the rest of the staff of Sango’s death. No one outside of Katsutoshi and himself knew what else took place in the throne room tonight other than the scheduled executions.
No one needed to know that taijiya was still alive; the less people knew the better. He couldn’t risk having someone let that information slip out to his little miko.
Kagome might be hurt at first about her friend’s death, but at least he would be able to provide her comfort with the news of the guards’ executions and with that, he could start bonding with her.
The bond that they would share might be based on a little, harmless lie, but essentially it would be for the best.
Kagome had a new life now…a life with him.
Tonight’s events would become insignificant once Kagome started accepting her role as his mate, not to mention she also had their pups to look after.
Of course, his mate could never know of tonight; Sesshoumaru would personally see to that.
~*~*~
The heavy rain that was once hammering down throughout the night and amongst the forest began to slowly lighten up just when dawn approached, but the two combatants hardly noticed anything as they were intently focused on each other’s movements.
“Is that the best that you’ve got?!” Koga shouted as he glared up at the sky while he angrily brushed his rain soaked bangs away from his face.
“Please, as if I would waste all of my energy on the likes of you,” Kagura sneered as she snapped her fan shut; glaring back down at the wolf youkai prince from her position on her giant, floating feather.
Koga growled angrily at the wind witch, before he launched himself from the ground and into the air; aiming a powerful roundhouse kick at Kagura’s skull.
However, Kagura was no fool.
Instantly, she drew back her fan and snapped it open before she released a strong gust of wind towards her offender; knocking Koga back into a powerful collision with the ground.
Quickly, Koga got onto his feet and when he did, he began to pursue Kagura slowly from the ground, as if he was a predator stalking its prey.
“Tonight, I’m gonna get my vengeance, bitch! I’m gonna make you pay for what you did to my clan,” Koga growled dangerously as he watched Kagura warily for any signs of an opening.
Once he was done with Kagura, all he had left to deal with was Naraku…then Kagome would finally be his.
He could tell that Kagome was nearing her heat, and the sooner he was finished with this whole Naraku business, the sooner he could take Kagome back home to pup her.
Now that most of his clan was wiped out by Kagura and Naraku, he had a responsibility to help repopulate his tribe; even if it meant having hanyou amongst them. Koga loved Kagome dearly and knew that she loved children, thus he knew that she would have no objections to this task.
She would be an amazing mother to his cubs and Koga couldn’t help but to smirk at the thought of him returning home from a hunt to find Kagome sitting on a bed of fur, nursing their litter of wolf cubs with her plump, perky breasts.
“Oh? It’s a shame you won’t be able to get your vengeance once I take those jewel shards away from you. Let’s see how powerful you really are without them, shall we?” Kagura said as she drew back her fan again.
This time the wind witch released a deadly attack of razor sharp wind blades at the wolf youkai prince below her, but was disappointed to see Koga dodge each blade effortlessly before he lunged at her again.
It happened so quickly, that Kagura barely had time to defend herself after her own attack.
Koga leapt up into the air and used his jewel shard powered legs to kick Kagura in the middle of her chest; sending the wind witch flying from her feather and rolling onto the rocky ground below.
Koga wasted no time as he quickly landed on the ground, charging towards Kagura as he drew his sword from the sheath on his hip.
As Kagura shakily stood up from the gravel, she spotted the wolf youkai just in time enough to defend herself with her fan.
“Oh no, you don’t,” Kagura grounded out as she used another blast of wind to push Koga back.
Unfortunately for her, the gust of wind wasn’t enough to push back a wolf youkai with fully activated jewel shards.
“Wha-” Kagura gasped before Koga pushed through the wind gust and landed a brutal punch to the left side of her face; the punch was so intense that it sent the fan flying from Kagura’s hand.
Before Kagura could even recover from the powerful punch, Koga used his sword and stabbed it deeply in the middle of her stomach; tearing through many organs and flesh as he sliced the blade upward through her midriff and towards her chest.
Kagura stumbled back whilst trying to hold her bleeding, internal organs back inside after Koga withdrew his sword and proceeded to quickly glance around for a means of escape.
She could regenerate, but it was going to take some time and she really needed to get away from this annoying wolf before he could do any more damage.
Koga smirked triumphantly as he watched Kagura glare up at him while stumbling backwards as she tried to get away from him.
“Looks like you’re all outta tricks,” Koga scoffed as he advanced slowly towards the injured wind witch with his sword still drawn.
Out of the corner of her eye, Kagura spotted her feather still floating in midair behind Koga and inwardly smirked as she thought of an escape route.
“Not this time, wolf,” Kagura grounded out as she raised her free hand in the air; summoning the giant feather towards her.
Before Koga could even figure out what she was doing, he jumped back just in time as the giant feather rushed past him and watched angrily as one of Naraku’s incarnations swiftly hopped on to it; taking off into early morning sky along with a small swarm of poisonous insects.
“Get back here, you bitch!” Koga bellowed as he ran after her.
He failed to notice that they had exited a barrier and was now running along the bottom of the canyon; completely unaware that he had a new audience observing him.
“Kagura!” He heard someone shout from above.
Koga skidded to a stop just in time to see Inuyasha land in front of him; carrying the dead miko on his back as he also had his large sword drawn.
“What happened?! Why didja let her get away, ya mangy wolf?” Inuyasha angrily shouted as whirled around to glare at Koga.
“Mind your own business, Mutt-face! I had this under control until you showed up,” Koga growled as he eyed Kikyo and Inuyasha irritably.
Something was amiss; shouldn’t Kagome be the one on that mutt’s back?
“Keh! Sure you did,” Inuyasha scoffed as he narrowed his eyes at his rival.
Koga took a chance to sniff the air around Inuyasha and growled angrily when he detected that Kagome’s scent on him was a couple of days old.
“Where’s my woman and why is she with you?” Koga said pointedly as he glared at Kikyo in discontent.
Inuyasha paused as he debated on whether to tell Koga what really happened to Kagome. At first Inuyasha was reluctant, as he didn’t want the wolf prince involved with more of his affairs, but eventually, the hanyou gave in.
At this point, it couldn’t hurt to have more people search for her, even if it was the stupid wolf.
After Inuyasha finished explaining the situation, his dog-like ears lowered in shame and sadness, as he chose to stare at a rather interesting rock on the ground, away from Koga.
Upon seeing her friend lowering his ears in shame, Kikyo gave Inuyasha a reassuring pat on the shoulder before she hopped down from his back; walking around armed with her bow, to inspect the area.
Koga’s eyebrow twitched in anger, before he reached out and roughly grabbed Inuyasha by the collar of his haori.
“You mean to tell me that you’ve lost Kagome, again?! Are you really that stupid?!” Koga shouted angrily to the disheartened hanyou.
How could Inuyasha be so careless!? Doesn’t the idiot know how close Kagome was to her heat? Koga thought furiously to himself.
Granted, Kagome was still a couple of weeks away from her heat, but any youkai and hanyou could tell from the warm spiciness in her scent that it was approaching…and it was going to be powerful.
Damn it, this stupid mutt always has to ruin everything! Koga growled inwardly.
“Well, I didn’t lose her on purpose, stupid!” Inuyasha yelled defensively as he shoved Koga away from him; but even Inuyasha had to admit that he really messed up this time by letting Kagome go by herself into the forest.
“Inuyasha,” Kikyo called softly; attracting the attention of both males before they slowly walked over to where she was.
“What is it?” Inuyasha said with concern as he came up to Kikyo’s side as the dead miko was kneeling on the ground to examine a large boulder with few blood droplets on it.
Inuyasha took a couple of delicate sniffs at the droplets before he stood back and folded his arms into the sleeves of his haori.
“That’s Kagura’s blood, not Kagome’s,” Inuyasha determined as he glanced back at the silently fuming wolf prince that was standing right behind him.
“Tch! If I had’ve known that Naraku had my woman, I definitely would’ve finished that wind bitch off,” Koga said gruffly as he glared at Inuyasha.
Kikyo stood up and dusted off the dirt from her hakamas.
“Then wherever Kagura goes, Naraku is certainly to be there, along with Kagome,” Kikyo concluded as she placed the arrow she armed her bow with back into the quiver and proceeded to climb onto Inuyasha’s back.
“Let’s go back and get the others while Kagura’s scent is still fresh. We can’t afford to lose more time,” Inuyasha said firmly as he carefully adjusted Kikyo on his back.
Koga irritably extended his arm in front of the hanyou and took a bold step forward, ahead of Inuyasha.
“Like I’m taking orders from you, Mutt! You’re too weak to pick up the same scents that I can, so I’m leading this pack,” Koga said aggressively.
Inuyasha angrily stormed up to Koga before shoving the irritable wolf demon aside.
“Like hell ya are! You might think I’m weak, but at least I’m not weak enough to let Kagura get away,” Inuyasha retorted.
“Inuyasha, now’s not the time to fi-” Kikyo started, but it was too late. The two males were already growling at each other with their fangs bared; preparing for a battle of dominance.
“This is your fault! If Kagome stayed with me, then she would’ve never been placed in danger,” Koga snapped.
“You would’ve just used her as a shard detector, ya greedy bastard!” Inuyasha reply angrily.
“Oh? And you haven’t been doing that?! You’ve been fooling around with that dead priestess, every chance you got. You’re the greedy bastard, Mutt,” Koga accused.
~*~*~
Naraku chuckled as he stared into the white mirror that Kanna held out for him; watching the two rivals argue over who would lead the search party.
It was an amusing scene to watch, but also very informative.
It appeared that the young miko, Kagome, had been missing for some time which had sparked Naraku’s curiosity. Especially since Inuyasha was so sure that he had kidnapped the strangely garbed miko.
Oh, how the inu hanyou was dead wrong.
However, Naraku, himself was a bit curious as to what happened to Kagome.
Almost a week ago, one of his poisonous insects was carrying Kanna’s mirror with it to spy on nearby enemies, when it saw Kikyo’s unconscious reincarnation being carried away by a small group of stealthy, black clad youkai with powerful auras.
They were so stealthy that his insects nearly didn’t detect them, but when the insect carrying the mirror tried to follow them, a youkai with piercing grey eyes slaughtered it; causing the mirror to fall somewhere in the middle of the dense forest.
It wasn’t until earlier this evening that the mirror was recovered and upon the recovery, one of the insects discovered Inuyasha and Kikyo together.
Yes, very curious indeed... Naraku mused to himself.
Fortunately, Naraku was almost done regenerating and if Kagome was still missing by the time he got back to full strength, then it would be easy to defeat Inuyasha and the others.
It was Kagome’s sacred arrow that had severely injured him, almost to the point of complete destruction, but a mere fluke saved Naraku from certain death.
Luckily, the oddly dressed miko’s aim was slightly off; hitting his shoulder blade instead of the middle of his back, where his corrupt heart truly lies.
Naraku couldn’t be more grateful for this opportunity. Kikyo was a small problem compared to the untrained miko, as the dead priestess had gradually become weaker.
Once Naraku would be rid of Kikyo, Inuyasha would be too distracted and distraught to even fight properly; his other enemies would soon fall after the inu hanyou and then his next step would be world domination.
However, there was one other obstacle in the way; one that had been recently absent from his presence in the last few months.
Sesshoumaru.
Whatever the young, Western demon lord was up to, it seemed to be preoccupying him pretty well; well enough to not participate in the last couple of battles.
Over the past couple of months, Naraku noticed the powerful Taiyoukai’s absence and that concerned Naraku on many levels.
Perhaps, Sesshoumaru had found a way to defeat him?
Everyone knew how power-hungry the Taiyoukai was and it wouldn’t surprise Naraku that the demon lord did discover some sort of way or weapon that could easily destroy him.
It was the anticipation of what the Taiyoukai had up his sleeve for the dark hanyou that bothered him.
Naraku knew that Sesshoumaru wouldn’t let go of his grudge; the Taiyoukai was too prideful to do that.
But what on earth was the inuyoukai up to?
It made Naraku so paranoid and so anxious that it hindered his body’s regeneration process because most of his days were spent being restless.
Whether Sesshoumaru participated in the final battle or not, Naraku knew that Sesshoumaru was a whole different issue to take care of.
The Taiyoukai wouldn’t go down so easily, especially with Tokijin in his possession and a newly regenerated arm.
No, eventually Naraku would have to face him and unfortunately, he felt that Sesshoumaru was probably ten steps ahead of him.
If there was ever a time to attack, now would be perfect.
~*~*~
The sun was beginning to rise higher in the mid-morning sky as Sesshoumaru began to walk along the corridors of the open outdoor walkway that led to another part of the vast castle.
On either side of the outdoor corridor was a large pond, filled with large spotted koi fish, beautiful white water lilies and other various water plants, but the Taiyoukai hardly noticed the scenery as his attention was focused on the footsteps approaching him.
Sesshoumaru paused as he waited for the two beings that he had sensed from within the castle to approach him. He didn’t have to wait long as he watched the toad youkai retainer rush towards him, before dropping to the floor in an apologetic bow; an old woman dressed as a miko, slowly followed behind.
“Forgive me, Lord Sesshoumaru! It took me a lot longer to find her, bu-” Jaken started.
“I must apologize for my lateness, my Lord. I was taking care of a small problem that needed my immediate attention. I presume that you require my assistance once again?” The old woman bowed as she interrupted the small youkai.
“Do you remember the conditions that I gave you in exchange for your revival?” Sesshoumaru stated more than asked as he glared at the old woman before him.
The old woman stood up straight from her bow and offered the Taiyoukai a small apologetic smile.
“Yes, of course, my Lord. I should have came to you as soon as I had received the message; this will never happen again,” The old woman said with another bow.
“Do you have it?” Sesshoumaru asked stoically.
As an answer to his question, the old woman reached into her haori sleeve and pulled out a small beaded, sapphire colored rosary with a large silver pendant engraved with the single flower kamon of the Western Lands.
The old miko walked past Jaken and kneeled before the Taiyoukai as she held the rosary in her open hands to present it to him.
Tentatively, Sesshoumaru picked up the small rosary before he held it up in the sunlight for inspection.
Unfortunately, it was one of the extreme measures Sesshoumaru had to take in order to protect Kagome, as well as himself. Even though his little mate was untrained in the art of miko practices, he didn’t want to risk her using her powers, just in case she would hurt either one of them; accidentally or intentionally.
“Are you certain that this will work?” The Taiyoukai inquired as he narrowed his amber eyes in doubt at the old miko.
“It should work flawlessly, my Lord. It may appear to be harmless, however, that rosary there is extremely powerful and it would be able to suppress any priestess’ power. Even that of your new mate,” The old woman explained with a small, dark smile.
“Should this fail in any way, I shall personally hunt you down and end your life,” Sesshoumaru threatened coolly as he tucked away the dainty, sapphire rosary inside of his haori.
“I can assure you that that it will not fail, my Lord. Only you are able to remove it, once you place it on her,” The old miko said.
Sesshoumaru eyed the old woman warily before he walked past her and Jaken.
He knew the history behind this woman and what she had against his mate, but the old miko was the only one powerful enough to pull off a dark spell of this magnitude.
If this rosary did anything that it wasn’t supposed to, Sesshoumaru would carry out his threat to the dark miko without a moment’s hesitation.
It would be foolish of her to cross him, especially since he had went through great lengths to retrieve the dark miko all the way from hell itself.
“Do not fail me, Tsubaki.”
