Chapter 6:
"That jerk, just dropping me like that," Kagome ranted as she worked her way out of the well. "Wait, what did he say? 'I will see you again, upon your return.' That means he already knew about the well!" She headed towards her house thinking, 'I wonder how long he's known. I've never sensed him here, so does that mean he can't pass through? Knowing him though, it's only a matter of time until he figures out how. Would he hurt my family? Try to take over the modern era?' She shivered at her thoughts.
As she reached for the door, she heard a call from behind her, "Kagome!"
'That's Inuyasha's voice,' she recognized immediately. 'What's he doing here already?' "Hi, Inuyasha," she smiled back.
"You're not hurt are you?" he sounded a little worried.
'Hurt? Oh yeah, Naraku said Inuyasha was approaching. He must have come through to check on me,' she remembered. "No, I'm fine," he still looked at her skeptically. "Really, I got down the well in time." 'More like got dropped down the well before you could see the position we were in, but still.'
"So you let Naraku find out about the well?" he questioned disapprovingly.
She looked taken aback, "I didn't really have a choice, Inuyasha."
"Humph," he crossed his arms, "so, when will you be coming back?"
"Soon," she replied, "long enough to do my test and get new supplies."
"Maybe you should stay longer," he suggested uneasily.
"What?!" his words took her by complete surprise. "Why do you say that?"
"Whatever Naraku is planning, clearly involves you," he explained, concern leaking into his voice. "He's dangerous, Kagome. I don't want you being in harms way."
"Oh," she whispered, but started thinking. Naraku was visiting her frequently, but he hadn't been causing her any harm. There really was no reason for her to stay away. She was starting to get used to his visits, and look forward to his touch even. "But Inuyasha, if he keeps showing up, that only makes it all the easier to find him," she rationalized. "At least we don't have to run in circles trying to find his hidden castle."
"Huh, I hadn't thought of that," Inuyasha admitted. "Fine, but you're gonna be watched every minute by at least one of us. I won't risk him catching you alone again." Kagome thought about this, and even though she didn't like it, she couldn't think of any way to turn it down without drawing suspicion. She settled for a quick nod. "Good, I'll see you in a few days." He lept off towards the well as Kagome entered her house.
She sighed heavily, 'What am I getting myself into?' "Mom, Gramps, Sota, I'm home!" No answer.
Entering the kitchen she found a note, "Kagome, we've all gone on a trip till Sunday evening. There is extra food and supplies already prepared for you if you return during this time. Love, Mom."
"Hmm, well at least I'll have plenty of time to think," she noted to herself. Today was Thursday and she had her test on Friday so she wouldn't see her family on this visit.
Later that evening, while lounging in a steamy bath, Kagome let her mind go over all the things Naraku had told her. 'Miroku's curse was just a mode of self-defense. I wonder if he would remove it if I bargained with him. I'll have to ask.' She sunk under the water, dousing her hair. 'Then Kouga's tribe. They had attacked Naraku first, even if they were lured by a rumor of power to be gained from the jewel shards. If they hadn't been so greedy, they'd all still be fine. I know Kouga won't see it that way though. He's too blinded by revenge.' Lathering her hair, she sighed in bliss, "Ahh, this feels like heaven." Dunking her head again cleared away the soap. 'Sango.' She gave a sad sigh. 'I just can't believe she would kill a demon for no reason. Maybe Naraku was lying. I need to find a way to ask her.' She stood, done with her bath, and wrapped a towel around her dripping wet body. 'Inuyasha, Kikyo, and Onigumo. That was a painful love triangle just like when it was Inuyasha, Kikyo, and myself.' She wiped the steam off the window and looked at her sad reflection. 'I understand how Naraku must have felt. It's actually a bit reassuring knowing he's not as heartless as he tries to portray himself to be.'
After drying off and getting dressed into her pajamas she let herself collapse into her soft, pink bed. "Ah, more heaven." Her mind was still reeling, 'Denying and resisting is getting me nowhere. It's... time to admit... I,' she gulped, preparing for her confession, "I want him." Just thinking about him, about how he was dark and dangerous, but at the same time could show her so much raw passion with just a kiss, it was making her moist again. A shudder of excitement ran down her body recalling how he made her feel. 'And obviously my body responds to him readily,' she noted. 'At least with him, it's not one-sided.'
'But... if any of my friends in the feudal era ever find out... they'd hate me,' she fretted, torn between what she wanted and what her friends would think of her. 'I might be able to explain myself to Miroku if his wind tunnel gets removed, he's rational and calm. Sango, if her brother was returned, might listen, but she still blames him for her people. Inuyasha... he'd hate me for it... but what business is it of his? I don't belong to him! He's obviously chosen Kikyo. I don't need his approval!' With that, her mind found enough peace to slip into a calming sleep.
Next day at school, Kagome was focusing her hardest on her English test, 'At least English is one subject I'm good at.' She was sure she was going to get at least a B on this test.
"Hey Kagome," her three friends chimed at lunch hour. "How do you think you did on your test?"
"I feel good about this one," she smiled. "Language comes to me fairly easy. Not like math."
"Than you'd better make sure you study hard for the math exam next week," Eri recommended.
"What?!" Kagome gasped. "Another math exam?" Kagome sighed defeatedly. 'Its never-ending.'
"On a different note," Yuka broached, "how are you doing with that guy of yours?"
"Huh?" Kagome asked as if she hadn't a clue. "What do you mean?"
"Well, the possessive two-timer that thinks you're his, walked in on you kissing that other guy, right?" Yuka recapped what Kagome told them last time.
"Well, I..." Kagome stammered.
"Aw, come on, Kagome," Ayumi pleaded jokingly, "you can tell us."
"Which one do you like now?" Eri prodded.
Kagome gulped, they weren't going to let this go, "I've kinda... gotten closer to-" but before she could say who, the loudspeaker rang out, an ear piercing sound signaling it'd been turned on. 'Saved by the bell,' Kagome silently thanked her luck.
"Attention all students," the loudspeaker echoed. "During the next class period the school will be performing mandatory drug tests for the 'Deep' epidemic." (A/N: Since I'm not familiar with drugs at all this part is completely made up from fragmented knowledge. Bear with me.)
As the details of the testing procedures continued to sound through the halls, Kagome asked, "What is this all about?"
"Oh, it's a new thing that has been going around," Yuka answered. "It's a drug that's supposedly a great high but very easy to overdose, or something."
"Yeah, there has already been several deaths in Tokyo alone," Ayumi recounted sadly. "Its got parents and schools everywhere in a panic."
"Result will be ready in a few days time. That is all," the loudspeaker clicked off with a thud, finishing the announcement.
"That's horrible," Kagome agreed, shaking her head sadly. "I don't understand why some people do such dangerous things to their bodies, all for a temporary high..."
The remainder of the day passed uneventfully, save the quick and mostly painless drug test. Kagome's arm was still tender where they drew blood. 'Who would of thought a little blood draw would bother me more than a demon's scratch,' Kagome complained, trying to rub the pain away as she made her way up the shrine steps.
Having already finished her test, all Kagome had left to do was pack up her supplies. Inuyasha wasn't expecting her until tomorrow. Should she stay home one more night, alone with her thoughts, or go back to her friends tonight? They would be watching her like a hawk, but at the same time, if they didn't expect her back yet, she might run into him before they noticed her return. Did she really want that though? A part of her certainly did.
Letting herself indulge in this forbidden fantasy was like playing with fire and eventually, she'd get burned, she knew that. But she couldn't help but feel it might be worth it, for what was a dark and cold night compared to being warm in the campfire's light? It added excitement to her previously stagnating love life. He thrilled her, intrigued her, opened her eyes to that which she was blind to. She couldn't help but want to understand him more. Yes, it was possible that this was all just an elaborate trap, but she was prepared to walk into it willingly, if only to find what lay hidden.
It only made sense that he would embrace, rather than dispel, all the accusations placed on him. For the more fearsome he is thought to be, the less he is opposed. What reasons could he have though, for explaining himself to her? Maybe to make her more pliable to his suggestions, more cooperative for whatever he has planned. Because she certainly is anything but cooperative to those she deems an enemy. She found herself no longer wanting to harm him, rather to try and make peace, even if it is from behind the scenes, so to speak, between their respective groups. Similar to how she acts as mediator between Inuyasha and Kouga.
As she passed the well house, she had to admit that the thought of running into Naraku alone again was making her increasingly excited. 'Do I got some sick fetish for danger, or what?' Kagome absentmindedly wondered, continuing to her house. No matter what she tried, it was becoming impossible to get him off her mind. She'd spaced out during lectures, only to return to reality when the bell would ring, signaling all the material she'd missed. She wasn't really sure what she felt for the dark hanyou. Lust, was definitely present, tempted to allow herself the experience that he'd gift, and something else, much vaguer, caring perhaps, or understanding. She wasn't sure, but she definitely wanted to see and know more.
She made up her mind, she would go back tonight. He did say he'd see her when she returned, right? So he might very well be waiting and watching for her. The idea of him being vigilante for her only increased her anticipation. Focusing her vision back on the world around her, she realized she'd been on auto-pilot packing up all her supplies. "That looks like everything," she noted to herself, shouldering her bag, stuffed to the brim with various instant foodstuffs.
She walked slowly, conscious of each and every step towards to well house. Her nerves were getting to her, making her tremble, brimming with excitement over the prospect of seeing Naraku, but anxious and a bit frightened as well. It was a very potent mix, and she loved it. It had been a long time since Inuyasha was able to cause such butterflies in her, and never this strongly. She stopped at the lip of the well, looking down into the dark abyss, breathing deeply to calm her racing heart. It would not do to be so obvious. He'd undoubtedly deride her for it, finding humor at her discomfort. When she felt she was as calm as she could get, she took one last deep breath before vaulting herself over the ledge.
Her heart sped up again as she continued forward in her journey. Would he be in the same vicinity? Inuyasha had probably driven him away, but how far away? Would he come snatch her up, whisk her away to some private location to do what he wanted with her? Kagome got even more uneasy realizing this could potentially be a very stupid idea. What if he did decide to act on his desires, was she ready for that yet? It was too late to have second thoughts though, as the blue light deposited her in the muddy, bone filled bottom of the well.
She began the strenuous climb out of the well while lugging her tightly packed, yellow backpack. By the time she crested the lip, she was panting hard, out of breath from her trek. She sat on the edge to regain her strength, glancing around for any sign of life.
In the still, quiet of the night, the snapped twig behind her seemed louder than thunder. She turned sharply to try and make out what it was but her human senses could only determine a rough silhouette approximately the size of a man. Her heart pounded in her chest as the unidentified shadow moved closer.
(A/N: I know, I know, I'm evil. All that build-up just to end the chapter. Mwahahaha!
For those following my little breadcrumbs, the next chapter will reveal exactly what Naraku has really been doing to Kagome to make her act OOC, for those who have yet to connect the dots.)
