Disclaimer: I do not own InuYasha and will make no money from this work of fiction. This will apply to all chapters contained within. |
A/N: This story has 12 chapters posted elsewhere and 13 is about to go up, so once we get there updates will be single chapters about twice a month. Of course if I get them done faster I will post faster but right now I'm managing two a month between RL and my other WIP.
InuYasha swore as he looked at the sky, which was rapidly bleeding into oranges and reds as the sun started to set. He kept his hand pressed over his side as he ran back towards home. Stupid fucking bug never would have been able to nearly gut him if he hadn’t been so distracted thinking about Kagome. The only good thing was that he had enough youki left that the intestines he’d had to push back in should stay put once the sun disappeared completely and that the red of his clothing would help hide the blood.
His house came into view and it couldn’t have happened a moment too soon. He’d be human in less than ten minutes and he wanted to be in his room, in his bed when that happened. He opened the front door and closed it behind him. Kagome was in the kitchen working on a dinner which he definitely wasn’t going to be able to eat, but it was a stroke of luck because whatever she was doing kept her from turning around.
“Dinner should be ready in about thirty minutes,” she said as he crossed the living room behind her. “I didn’t want it to get cold so I waited until about the time you said you’d be back.”
He knew that he should answer her, but he couldn’t. It was taking everything he had to stay upright as his youkai continued to wane. He just had to make it to his room and then he could collapse and spend all night cursing his weak human form to distract himself from the pain until the sun rose. It wouldn’t be the first moonless night he’d spent that way and it probably wouldn’t be the last. He dragged himself down the hall not noticing the way Kagome had abandoned the vegetables she was preparing to watch him with a frown.
It wasn’t like him to outright ignore her and as she saw the way he was walking her frown only deepened. The way he had his arm tucked against his side and the careful way he moved did nothing to convince her that she was wrong to be concerned. She turned off the stove and stuck all of the ingredients that were to be their dinner back in the fridge and then headed down the short hall after him.
She stopped at his closed door and knocked. “InuYasha are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” he snapped through gritted teeth.
Well, that settled it as far as she was concerned. He definitely wasn’t fine. She tried the door knob but found it locked. Her brow furrowed as she tried to figure out what to do next, until she remembered that there was another way into his room. She darted back down the hall to her own room and then through the bathroom that connected his and hers together. The door into his room from the bathroom only locked on her side. She took a deep breath and pushed it open.
Her eyes widened as she took in the sight of him as he laid on his bed. Not only was he holding a bloody towel against his abdomen but he was completely human. Everyone knew that hanyou had a time when they became mortal, but for some reason it had never even occurred to her that InuYasha’s had to be coming up soon since she’d been here for a few weeks already. Why hadn’t he told her, or at the very least why hadn’t he let her help him if he was injured? Did he not trust her with his secret or was he worried that it would somehow change how she felt about him?
“What the hell are you doing in here?” he demanded with a groan.
She ignored him and went over to the bed. “You idiot!” she said as she lifted the bloody towel. “You should have said something, let me help you. Did you really think it would matter to me that you were human for a little while? Do you have any medical supplies around here?”
“Top of the closet,” he answered with a groan, cursing himself for being so stupid.
She returned with his large and well stocked first aid kit and he moved his hands from the wound so that she could tend to him. He hissed as she disinfected the gash in his side with some antiseptic and then examined the wound.
“Well the good news is that it’s a fairly clean cut,” she said. “There is also no internal damage since the tear isn’t all the way through the muscle, but it is deep and still bleeding, which isn’t good.”
“What are you a doctor or something?” he asked, wondering why he had never done so before.
“I was a trauma nurse before all this started,” she told him. “I’m going to use my reiki to give a little boost to your healing. I probably couldn’t do it, if you were hanyou right now, but since you aren’t, it should help. Then I can either stitch it or see if the butterfly closures will hold it together until morning. What do you think will be best?”
“Try the butterfly bandages first. I hate pulling stitches,” he told her. “I heal too fast when I’m hanyou and they get stuck in my skin.”
She nodded and he kept his eyes on her as she placed one hand on his head and let the other hover over his wound. He felt a comforting warmth spread through him and some of the weakness he felt faded. He could feel the essence of her, her compassion, her love and something inside him shifted. Kagome was not Kikyou. She didn’t have it in her to be intentionally cruel. He was a fucking idiot.
“Okay, now for the painful part,” she said quietly. “I’m going to need your help too. I don’t have enough hands.”
“Just hurry up,” he told her. “I can handle it. What do you want me to do?”
She measured out how many butterfly strips she felt she would need and then peeled off the back, sticking just the smallest edge on the side of the large kit and then put it near his hip. “I’m going to hold it closed. You’ll have to stick them in place. If you can’t then I’ll figure something else out. Ready?”
“Do it,” he said as he clenched his jaw.
Sweat beaded on his forehead as she firmly but carefully pushed the edges of the gash in his side back together. He was on fire and a wave of nausea rolled through him, but he forced himself to grab the bandages and start placing them. He laid the last one and when it held he let his head fall back.
“Fuck,” he cried. “Water, or I’m going to puke and no way it will hold up to that.”
She nodded and hurried away. He could hear the sink come on as he took slow deep breaths with his eyes closed willing himself not to throw up and render all that pain pointless. A cool rag appeared against his forehead and he could have wept with gratitude at how much it helped. He opened his eyes as her hand slipped behind his head and lifted it as she put the glass to his lips.
He took several slow sips and the last of his nausea abated. “Thanks.”
She set the cup down and finished taking care of him by putting ointment on the wound and then covering it with a bandage. He frowned as several drops of water landed on his abdomen as she smoothed down the tape around the gauze. He grunted as he reached up to push her hair out of the way and found her crying.
“Oi, you’re crying,” he said.
She sat back and scowled at him as she swiped at her tears. “Of course I’m crying, idiot. You’ve been so good to me and I’m sad that you’re hurt.”
“That’s not the only reason, is it?” he asked.
She looked at her lap. “No, it’s not.”
He touched her face, cradling her cheek in his palm. “Tell me.”
She shook her head. “I can’t. I promised I wouldn’t.”
He used his other hand to push himself up, even though it felt like his gut was on fire. Her eyes widened and she pushed him back down onto the bed so he grabbed her wrist and slid his hand up her arm and then jerked her down against his chest. “Tell me.”
Her eyes started to shine with unshed tears and she captured her lower lip between her teeth. She shook her head again.
He lifted his head and brushed his lips across hers lightly. “Tell me, please.”
“Because I care about you,” she breathed. “Because you’re not like any man I’ve ever known. Because with you I feel safe, like I never have to be afraid of anything as long as I’m with you. Because I look at you and sometimes it feels like I might die if I can’t be with you, like I would gladly go through it all over again as long as it meant that this is where I ended up.”
“Me too,” he said tangling his hand in the back of her hair and pulling her mouth down against his.
Her heart was racing and her head was spinning as he kissed her with a heartbreaking tenderness. What could have changed since last night? If he was doing this while he was human then was it his youkai side that didn’t want to be with her? Would be be angry with her for taking advantage of him when he changed back?
He bit her bottom lip and then sucked on it and she opened her eyes. He let her go and she sat back. “And here I thought I was a pretty decent kisser.”
She blinked. “I don’t, what?”
He snorted and put his hand on her thigh caressing it lightly. “You were frowning and it felt like you weren’t really into it. I hope that it’s just because I’m human right now. It’s okay, I can deal with you not being attracted to me one night a month.”
“What?” she said again wondering if her brain had gone on vacation.
He chuckled and then groaned. “You were frowning while I kissed you. Last night you were kissing me back, but just now you were only responding to what I was doing, like you weren’t really into it. Unless I just read this whole situation wrong in which case please kill me.”
“No. No!” she said the old synapses finally starting to fire again. “I mean, you are a good kisser, really good, and you didn’t read anything wrong.” Her cheeks pinked. “I do miss your ears, but you are handsome this way too. I was just… Last night you weren’t ready and now suddenly tonight… I was confused and wondering what changed or if it was because your youkai didn’t want this and worried that you might be upset with me for breaking my promise when you change back.”
“Fuck, that’s it?” he breathed in relief. “You had me worried. The truth is that it was this part of me holding me back. Even though I knew you weren’t anything like Kikyou… I met her at a party the night I graduated high school. She was my first, everything really. Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t perfect. She hated it when I did something she thought was too youkai. She put up with my ears but she never would have touched them, not even to warm them up like you did. She hated my job, but accepted it because it was the only outlet I had for the part of me that is youkai.”
Kagome scooted the chair closer to the bed and ran her finger threw his hair in the exact spot one of his ears would have been. “I understand. You loved her enough that it was worth all parts that weren’t great and she hurt you in a way I can’t even imagine. It’s only natural that you wouldn’t want to risk that kind of pain again.”
“That’s just it though,” he said. “When you used your power on me, I couldn’t keep denying the truth, that you are nothing like her, that is isn’t you to hurt someone you care about that way. The pain is unimaginable to you because you can’t even bring yourself to imagine hurting someone like that. Being with you isn’t a risk but not being you is because I’m pretty sure I would regret it for the rest of my life. I haven’t said her name in three years, not even in my thoughts, not until tonight but I can now, because if I’m with you she can’t hurt me anymore.”
Kagome wiped her face. “Damn right she can’t. She’d have to go through me first.”
He laughed lightly and closed his eyes as the pain flared to life once more. “Damn it, woman, stop making me laugh. It hurts too much. Shit, get up here and lay by me. I want to hold you.”
She climbed onto the bed carefully and curled up against his uninjured side. She draped her arm over his chest and he wrapped his arm around her back, his hand resting on her side. “InuYasha?”
“Yeah?” he replied.
“I swear that I’ll never lie to you,” she said quietly. “I will never cheat on you and I’ll protect your heart as if it were my own for as long as you’ll let me.”
For a long time he didn’t say anything, mostly because he didn’t trust himself to speak. Then he cleared his throat. “What about plotting to kill me?”
She slapped his shoulder lightly. “Jerk. Way to ruin the moment.”
“Fine,” he said as he kissed her forehead. “How about this? I love you, too, Kagome.”
Her gasp and the shower of tears and all the kisses that followed made the pain of his injury a distant memory lost in the warmth and light of her love. She hadn’t said it back, but she didn’t need to and he was sure that she would say it whether it was later tonight or in the morning or every day for the rest of his life. To think he had almost stupidly denied himself this, her, because of Kikyou. Kagome stomach rumbled loudly and she lifted her head with a blush.
He pushed the hair back from her face. “Go get something to eat. I’ll still be here when you get back.”
“Okay. I’ll make you some broth too,” she said. “You need to keep up your strength until morning.”
He watched her go and looked up the ceiling. Who would have expected how much his life could have changed in such a short time? He wondered if he would have agreed to Sango and Miroku’s crazy request if he had known how it would turn out. He hoped that he would have been brave enough to say yes.
The door opened and Kagome was holding a single can of juice in her hand. Her hands were shaking as she set it on the table. “You have to get up. There is someone out there. I caught a glimpse of them but pretended I didn’t and I felt something, something very bad, dangerous just for an instant.”
“Lock the door,” he said as he pushed himself up inspite of the pain. He had just found her and he would be damned if he lost her now. She hurried to his side and helped him to his feet. “Get me a shirt and a couple of sweaters and put on at least one more for yourself, socks too, double up.”
Kagome went to his dresser and pulled out an armful of clothes. She dropped them on the bed and grabbed one, helping InuYasha put it on then two sweaters as well before grabbing another for herself. Next she helped him into a pair of jeans and put his socks on first, two pair before she covered her own feet. She spared a worried glance at his face. He was sweating like mad and looked green.
“Shit, shoes,” he said. “I have some up here but you don’t.”
Her eyes widened. “My tennis shoes are in my room, under my bed.”
“Get them,” he said after a moment. “Careful and quiet, sweet girl.”
Even under the circumstances she managed a small smile at his affectionate address of her. She crept through the bathroom and into her own room. The door was thankfully shut. She bent down and grabbed her sneakers and then hurried back to him. She pulled them on and then hurried to help him as he tried to force his foot into his own shoes without the use of his hands since he couldn’t bend over.
Downstairs there was loud crash.
“Closet, hurry,” he said.
She nodded and wrapped her arm around his waist and helped him limp across the room. He leaned against the door frame as she opened the hidden door. She grabbed the flashlight and watched as he grabbed a battered looking katana from yet another secret cabinet and slipped it through his belt. He grabbed her then and kissed her hard, desperately.
“Go,” he told her. “I’m right behind you.”
She wanted to protest but nodded and climbed down the ladder, turning on the flashlight as she reached the bottom. She shined it upwards relieved to find the door shut and him making his way down to her. His feet touched the ground and he just stood there for a long moment head resting on one of the rungs.
“Shit, I don’t know if I can make it,” he admitted quietly. “I’m going to try, but I want you to promise to keep going no matter what.”
“No,” she said without hesitation. “If you want me to be safe to get away from here then you are just going to have to come with me. Don’t bother arguing with me. I love you and I won’t leave you behind, not even to save myself.”
He knew she meant every word. He forced himself to let go of the ladder. She pulled his arm over her shoulder and wrapped the other around him and they started walking. Every step was agony and he could feel blood leaking from his side, but the warmth of the woman next to him and the way she never faltered as she shouldered his weight strengthened his resolve. If she wouldn’t leave him then he had no choice but to suck it up and keep going.
“How far?” she asked quietly.
“5 kilometers,” he told her through gritted teeth. “The last one is uphill.”
She laughed without humor. “Of course it is. Well, at least it will tell us when we’re almost there.”
“That’s my girl,” he said weakly. “Find that silver lining.”
“If you can still make wise cracks then you can’t be that bad off,” she said trying to convince herself of the truth of her words because it was better than being terrified that she was going to lose him.
She shook her head. She couldn’t think like that, wouldn’t. It had taken her this long to find him and she had been through so much already, she would make it through this too, and she would find the strength to carry him if she had to. Maybe she hadn’t seen her own life as worth fighting for before, but she did now and she would fight for his too.
He stumbled, but she somehow kept them both from falling. “Fuck, I can’t.”
“Shut up,” she said and straightened her back. “Look, I see the incline. We’re close.”
He just nodded and leaned harder against her. She clenched her jaw and forced herself to start walking again. She kept her eyes on her feet, not daring to look up and see just how much further they had to go. One more step she told herself over and over again and then suddenly they were at a dead end. She looked up and realized were he not leaning on her InuYasha wouldn’t even have been able to stand up straight.
“InuYasha, now what?” she asked.
He groaned and reached up searching for something until she heard a click and the space above them opened. He reached around and she stepped back as a rope ladder fell down into the hole.
“I’ll hold it steady for you,” she told him. He looked at her and she shook her head. “No, you are not giving up on me, not when we are so close. You get your ass up that ladder mister and then you can rest, I promise.” She swiped angrily at her tears. They would do her no good right now. “If you don’t climb up that ladder then we won’t ever get to make love. Don’t make me die a virgin, InuYasha.”
That got his attention and he took a little more of his weight on his own feet. “Virgin?”
It was so embarrassing but if it got him out of this tunnel then it was worth it. “Yes, okay. I am twenty five and have never done more than some kissing and heavy petting, but if you get your ass up that ladder I fully intend for you to be my first everything. I will have wild sex with you in the damn forest if you want as soon as you are healed up but you have to do this for me first.”
“Keh, no fucking way I’m missing out on that,” he said taking hold of the ladder.
She grabbed the rope to hold it steady which was no easy task as his whole body shook with the effort he was exerting to pull himself up each rung. Blood landed on her hand and her heart clenched in her chest, but she would worry about that once they were out. He had said there was a survival pack waiting up there. Surely it had first aid supplies. His disappeared and she heard him grunt.
She climbed up as quickly as she could and found him laying on the ground his sweater and the leg of his jeans stained a dark red. He pointed and she shined the flashlight in that direction and saw a pair of footlockers. It was much colder above ground wherever they were and she shivered.
“43-09-17, left one,” he said his teeth chattering.
She held the flashlight between her knees as she used the combination to open the lock. She lifted the lid relieved to find a lantern and a first aid kit like the one in his home. She grabbed both and returned to his side. She turned off the flashlight and turned on the lantern and then set to work.
She pushed up his clothes and peeled off the blood soaked bandage. The gash in his side was side open again and bleeding freely. He was in no condition to help her this time. She dug through the supplies. It wasn’t easy stitching closed such a large wound without help and it was a good thing he wouldn’t scar because it was a mess but she could now get him bandaged up again. He had passed out at some point and she knew it was probably from a combination of the cold and the blood loss and pain, but she couldn’t let him sleep, not yet.
She touched his face and gently urged him to wake. “InuYasha, I need the other combination.”
“47-05-31,” he murmured.
She leaned over and kissed him. “Stay with me, okay? I love you.”
She went to the second foot locker and as she put in the combination she realized that it was the same as the trap door, which explained why he didn’t tell her it before. He must have assumed she would be smart enough to at least try it. She opened the lid and inside was a backpack with sleeping bag rolled up and clipped on and a satellite phone. She unhooked the sleeping bag and grabbed the phone.
Once she had covered him up she turned on the phone relieved to see that it was fully charged, but there was no signal. Setting it aside for the moment she went back to the foot lockers and opened the backpack. As she expected there were several bottles of water inside. She returned to InuYasha and lifted his head into her lap. He opened his eyes and she held the water to his lips. He managed to get down about half of it before shaking his head.
She ran her fingers through his hair. “There’s no signal for the phone.”
He swallowed hard and raised his arm. “Walk that way until you get one. You’ll be near the entrance to this cave so be careful.”
She nodded and started to ease out from under him but he stopped her wrapped his arm around her and turning his head towards her lap. “InuYasha?”
“Just a little longer like this,” he said quietly. “You smell so good.”
She went back to running her fingers through his hair. “As long as you want.” The cold didn’t matter, none of it mattered, except for him. “Just, stay with me, too.”
“Can’t die,” he told her. “Got my heart set on that wild sex in the forest you were talking about. Go call now. 39.84 by 141.24 ”
“Pervert,” she teased as she carefully moved his head from her lap and back onto the ground.
She grabbed the phone and the flashlight and started walking in the direction he had pointed. The air got even colder and she could now feel the real bite of the wind. The entrance was clearly well concealed by the brush and the trees growing wild in front of it. She checked the phone relieved to find that she could now make a call. She pressed the call button, held it to her ear and hoped.
“Speak,” a deep male voice said.
“Um, is this Sesshomaru-sama, InuYasha’s brother and the youkai no taishou?” she asked.
“It is,” he replied. “Who are you and how did you get this number?”
“My name is Higurashi Kagome and I was staying with InuYasha,” she told him. “He was injured this afternoon and it wasn’t a big deal until someone, something showed up at his house. We had to run and he’s human and hurt and we had to run anyway.”
“Where are you?” Sesshomaru asked.
“I think 39.84 by 141.24, does that make sense?” she asked. “We are in a cave somewhere within five kilometers of his house. The entrance is blocked by a bunch of brush and trees.”
“Hn, GPS coordinates to the entrance I assume,” he said. “And my brother?”
“Holding on,” she replied. “He’s lost a lot of blood though. Please hurry. He needs IV fluid and to be kept warm until sunrise. I’ve gotten him to drink some water and stitched the wound but I don’t know if he can’t last that long.”
“He will not die,” Sesshomaru said. “Do what you can until help arrives.”
Kagome returned to InuYasha and slipped under the sleeping bag beside him. As soon as she warmed up their combined body heat would keep them both warmer than if they were apart. She put her head on his shoulder and her hand on his chest and smiled as his arm came around her.
“Did you get through?” he asked.
“Yes, someone is coming,” she told him. “So, I’ll never forgive you if you give up on me now.”
