Sesshomaru walked towards his shoji screen doors he had no desire to be a willing attendant at the harems audition.He had other pressing matters to attend to. There had been some disturbance outside the palace walls---the servants had been chattering lately about an enemy.
This one did sense a demonic aura recently however it was not strong enough to determine its character.He thought curiously.
Walking towards his private teahouse located within the Zen gardens the Dai youkai massaged his temples slightly.Peace and tranquality it was his favourite pastime the affairs of life can sometime be a burden to the mind. He had been over exhursted in his study hall concerning some newly added war tatics he had to introduce to the Imperial General--Koga.
"Where is he "Jaken squabbled as he ran throught the castle's halls.  Ohh Prince Sesshomaru -sama alway defies protocol. Why must I always be the one to fetch the tiger out of the cave the servant thought nervously. Suddenly halting outside the Princes's shoji screen doors he peered nervously.
Clearing his throat slightly the servant imp musturred up the courage to summon the inu prince.
"Erm. Crown Prince Sesshomaru-sama! Might I inform you that his majesty has requested your presence and I do not think it is up for discussion." Jaken squeaked loudly-- he had added the latter of his statement in hoped that the Prince would take it into consideration.
The Dai youkai ears twitched slightly at the sound of squaking vermin. Father has taken extraordinary measures to draw my attention
Irritably he made his way towards his screen doors. Glaring at the toad like servant before him he slammed the shoji door shut ands tepped hastily around the imp knocking him off balance towards the floor
"Leave now" Sesshomaru stated smoothly . He was not only irritated but slightly angered that his father would request his presence at such a trivial event. What was the old man up to anyways.
"Erm your highness", Jaken squeaked as he rose and fought to catch up with the young prince."Wh..where have you been.The human prospect is about to recite a tanka. Erm your father has well requested this and.."
"I dont owe you any explanation". Sesshomaru responded icly. Turning to face the imp he flicked a claw he had hoped the creature would comprehend his gesture.
"Right of course you dont" Jaken responded wearily and with a sigh he dissapeared into the hallways.
"Human you say. Just as I thought--this one did smell an odour" he muttered. Utterly repelled at the idea that a human would dear enter into the harem again. It would seem as if he would have a bit of entertainment this night even if it would come from himself, turning towards the entrance he made his way into the grand hall.

Ah there he is the emperor thought smugly as he acknowledged his eldest sons presence.
"The onna here was about to recite me a tanka though I beleive she can benefit from some motivation.Sesshomaru perhaps you can set the example ." Touga said humourously eyeing his sons slight aggitation at the bold request
Sesshomaru glared at the woman before him who was staring at him curiously. She was fairly attractive,petite but filled out in the right places. She wore a purple printed kimono with matching hair ornaments. Her midnight locks were detailed and braided with bangs that framed her face perfectly.She was dressed plainly unlike the other women he had noticed earlier but her bright blue eyes pierced through his gold ones intensely.
Kagome flushed slightly as she took in the Prince before her,he appeared to be slim but tall and built,his skin was fair unlike his fathers which held a slight tan.He wore a spiked black armour it drifted around his midsection and extended over his left shoulder,his kimono was mostly white with a blue red and gold cresent print certifing that he was of royal birth. He wore a silverly white hakama which gathered at his ankles, along with gold plated black ankle boots.
Unlike his father the prince's forehead held a blue cresent moon framed by silver bangs. his cheeks bore two smooth magenta streaks,his eyelids held a faint magenta print.The males hair was silver and appeared to be thick ,it cascaded to the edges of his calves. Sesshomaru's eyes were narrow and also gold but it lacked the warmth the emperor's held. He too had a thick mass of white fur on his right shoulder,his overall facial appearance seemed feminine but his presence was completly masculine--she could tell.
He looks just like the emperor--No.Joo Kimiko she corrrected softly. A mixture of the two yet he was..beautiful.? The onna gazed at him in awe . It was a fact she had not interacted with a vast variety of youkai species but to her this male had to be the fairest she had witnessed in her lifetime.
"As you request" the crown prince said eyeing the woman with contempt. No he was not interested in being a scape goat for his fathers trivial riddles. However he knew this was his sires way of reprimanding him due to his absence.
"Onna as this one recites a tanka--after observing it --you will respond with one in return".Sesshomaru replied smoothly. Gracefully he approached her and paced about her thoughtfully. Inhaling her scent  slightly he smirked-- of course this tanka would not a kind one
"Lotus Blossoms springs up on every side decade after decade they wither and they die ,
Like the concubines in the palace...every decade the blossoms return anew,
Unfortunately the bloom of youth from the former blossoms do not,
Because of your humanity,your beauty is vain and your life is fleeting,
It is the fate of mortal concubines whom enters the palace proceedings"

Sesshomaru ended his tanka by staring intensly at the young onna, he could sense her stirring of emotions as she considered his words.
How dare he. Kagome thought angrily as she glared at the handome youkai before her. Hes--hes insulting me--well--my humanity. But all the same ME.
"This was not what I had in mind", Touga whispered to Kimiko sadly. "I will have to reprimand him again later though I had hoped this would have been a fair punishment."
Kimiko reassured her mate softly upon hearing his concern likewise she did not expect such an open offense. Her son was usually reserve and sometimes compliant at events such as these.
"I assure you dear the human does not lack intelligence remember A women's revenge is three times thick". she chanted melodically before turning to face the onna again. She hoped the girl would not easily give in-- after all she had just placed her confidence in --a human.
Kagome rose from her low posture and turned to the prince. She was angry--she was on the verge of exploding. She could feel her heart hammering loudly within her chest. However this was the inspiration she needed , this was what she would work with.
"I will respond now " her voice chimed softly filled with vegenance and determination. This will bite his ego--hopefully

"As the tree blossoms so bloom I, flinging my wild branches to the sky,
I renew each year my leafy suit and strike with the years a deeper root,
In my short lifespan Ive sheltered a thousand birds to be and
Ive clothed my trunks with pride,love and dignity,
Old wounds are present and wrinkles are upon this face but the children
Ive bore will continue my race,
As a pious girl I am not allowed great accomplishments like men ,
but neither am i willing to discard my own intelligence,
Fleeting life is better than no life at all,
And my fate can only be determined ..by the Gods
Inuyasha smirked inwardly as he gulped down another cup of sake. She definitely told him off ! Finally Sesshomaru someone other than me with balls!
Kagome faced the crown prince with a gracious bow. "I hope I did not dissapoint your highness", she responded as a bit of humourrang in her tone.
Sesshomaru eyes narrowed with disdain he was not pleased that one such as her would so openly offend his person.
"Big words for a small girl. A woman would always act poised in the court." Sesshomaru responded boredly before taking his seat.
Clencing her fist slightly she eyed the arrogant prince as he took his seat. My place ...who does he..my place ? Kagome thought as her faced flushed with anger . Is he implying that im not yet a woman? Eyeing his seated figure breifly her eyes then flashed at attention to the sound of the emperor.
"Indeed , it is said that a woman should focus on embroidery and the arts", the emperor responded softly drawing the onnas attention to his standing ovation. "However onna you have accomplished a great feat you have truly redeemed yourself"! Touga bellowed loudly as the crowd began to cheer.
"Yes she certainly has a sense of dignity." Kimiko concluded with a small smile as her golden orbs narrowed and eyed the human girl curiosly. "Little one you've done exceptionally well, do you have anymore talents?"
Talents Kagome thought nervously. She didnt consider her previous act as a talent. It was more of a rebuttal to the inu princes greviance and the only way she could offend him openly without suffering any real consequences.
"Erm well,I know how to play a bit of the Koto", Kagome whispered softly." I can read a bit and write calligraphy,Im not very good with the arts--" she finished uncertain of the intent behind the empresses questions.
"Well theres always room for improvement", Kimiko said warmly .Gesturing to the head attendant she handed him an object and whispered something softly ."Bankutso keep her name and grant her this jaden pendant"
"Hai"! the attendant responded as he accepted the pendant and walked towards Kagome."Higurashi Kagome daughter of merchant Higurashi Shin please bow", he chanted loudly.
Kagome eyes widen slightly as she sank to her knees slowly.  She half hoped that she would not be beheaded for her bluntness towards the crown prince.
"Higurashi Kagome nameboard kept and was bestowed a Jaden Pendant with the name Zenkō meaning, Virtuous One. From here on you are to be called Zenkō or Virtuous Concubine. Though you are not an Imperial Concubine because you have not yet served his majesty your rank is high and you are in the running." Do you accept the imperial decree."Bankutso exclaimed as he closed the golden scroll.
"I--I. accept "she said slowly and raising her head she stared the emperor with disbeleif. No she had not expected this turn of event, she had not anticipated this at all
Sesshomarus eyes widened at the sound of the decree. The woman was imprudent even defiant she dared to challenge him in the presence of the authorities. Yet she sparked his curiousity. Though it wasnt enough for him to consider her worthy of the rank she was bestowed it made him ponder upon the reason behind his father odd behaivour.
Father Sesshomaru thought clencing his fist slightly. What exactly is your motive--Nothing good I presume can come out of this

Kagome is now in the concubines running along with some others I will mention in the next chapter..the harem system is based on rank and status hence the reason she was given a name/meaning
In Edo Japan it is normal for a man to have more than one wife. Sesshomaru father did not comitt adultery or infidelity in the Inuyasha manga Kimiko was considered first/legal wife and Izayoi was actually a concubine from a noble household (in case you didnt know)
In poetry basically Sesshomaru praised her beauty but called it useless because she would die before time (due to her humanity)
Kagome rebuttled by saying she accepted her humanity and she didnt need to live on longer since her children would

Hakama- traditional japanese trousers
Shoji screen door- sliding outer or inner door made of a latticed screen covered with white paper.
