Chap 7
One week from the bug battle
While Sesshomaru was immersed in the books, the owls and book worms conferred. They had much to discuss; reassuring the worm demons that the remaining owls didn’t want to get in Lord Sesshomaru’s bad graces, current library issues, and research problems and successes. In due time Elwood told Jake and the other two worm demons about being eating by the previous, now dead, head librarian. They were in shock. As far as they remembered they were reviewing articles and researching information for Lord Sesshomaru and then it was dark, damp, and they went to sleep. Or at least that’s how they remembered it. Jake tilted his head in concentration, his little glasses moved upward as he scrunched his face focusing on that day. “Oh, yes. I had just found a book too. I had hoped it would be of use to Lord Sesshomaru. Where did I put it? First, though, I must thank our Lord for his mercy.”
Jake turned to thank Lord Sesshomaru for his miraculous resurrection but the Lord was gone.
“Well, I’ll tell my mother I’m back at least.” The little worm demon creeped out of the library to deliver the news. His mother was beside herself with joy and started telling all the neighbors of Lord Sesshomaru’s gracious act. Before the day was out the story had been embellished and exaggerated to momentous proportions. The Lord could operate, raise the dead and heal the sick!

In the meantime, Lord Inuyasha had found the advisors. They were meeting with some concerned merchants in the sunny open court area at the entrance of the castle. Castle guards watched over the castle gate and the advisors. Overhearing a few comments as Inuyasha walked up to the group, he decided to listen first to their concerns rather than break up the meeting. The baker was commenting that he didn’t have enough flour to make enough bread to feed the new people. The dairy man was lamenting that there was not enough milk to feed the children. The tailor added that he had run out of supplies to make clothes for all the new orders he was receiving. But then conversation stopped as all turned to watch Jaken. The gate guards moved into an alert position because Jaken was shrieking.
All the individuals looked around them. The guards raised their weapons
“Slow down, Lord Inuyasha.”
Immediately the gathering relaxed and the guards resumed their positions at the gates.
Jaken had been running his hardest to keep up with Inuyasha. His short legs were a disadvantage when trying to keep up with the young lord as Inuyasha always seemed to run from place to place. Jaken bent over his knees. He panted and wheezed. He looked as though he would die.
Inuyasha squatted down to check on the imp. By this point in their relationship they liked each other. Inuyasha felt a debt of gratitude to Jaken for his part in Inuyasha’s mating with Sesshomaru. He was amused that the part got larger every time the story was retold but he really didn’t mind. He sensed a kindred spirit in Jaken, a pure spirit that cared for his lord brother with all his heart, and that he sanctioned.
“Hey, Jaken. You ok?” The inuhanyou tapped his shoulder.
Panting heavily Jaken replied, “Yes milord.”
Any other response was cut short as all looked up as a bright yellow sphere zipped overhead from the library window toward the forest.
Eyebrows lifted in surprise, Inuyasha turned to Jaken, “Guess he found something of interest in his studies.”
All the eyes in the courtyard followed the sphere’s flight until it was out of sight.
Turning to the merchants and advisors Lord Inuyasha motioned to the court benches near the fountain. “Come all of you. Let me share some ideas with you.”
The advisors walked quickly to the seats and looked up at the younger lord. The three merchants were caught off guard that they were included in the lord’s company and stood dumbly looking at each other.
“Get over here,” Inuyasha motioned. “I need your input too.”
Flattered the men nearly tripped over themselves getting to Inuyasha’s circle. Inuyasha took a moment to look at all the faces and then started laying out his ideas for funding the redesign of the castle town.
“I just read an exciting story about a festival. As I was reading it I pictured the festival in my mind’s eye right here in Castle town. There were multiple vendors of foods, merchandise, games, and singers and dancers to entertain. People came from far and near to participate. They paid to participate!”
“Advisors, Merchants, Jaken, I’d like to further examine this option as a way to fund the castle town extension, house and feed all the refugees and bring in a new source of revenue. The refugees can work in their fields of expertise. They just need supplies. The participants can pay in cash or supplies. The supplies can go to the refugees and they can support the festival. Go talk to the refugees. Take some castle staff and guards with you for manpower. Figure out what they need. I’ll need a list of all the supplies needed from you. Mull over the idea and we can add more activities to the festival. There should be plenty of sake from last year’s crops. The entrance fee doesn’t have to high especially if we can attract a large number of participants. Invite the humans, demons, and hanyou. Don’t exclude anyone. The more the merrier! When Sesshomaru gets back I can confer with him. Maybe we can have the two of us put on a demonstration of warrior skill, or something else of that nature.”
The advisors nodded and appeared ready to get to work but Inuyasha wasn’t finished.
“Baker.” Inuyasha moved to stand directly in front of the baker.
“Yes milord.”
“Can you bake something unique and special for the festival?”
Stuttering the demon replied, “I’mm mmm sure I can come up with something. I’ll need eggs and more flour though,” he added as he scratched his head in thought.
“Put it on the list.” Inuyasha moved to stand in front of the next merchant. “Dairy man.”
The demon cow lowed, “Milord.”
“Surely there is a dairy treat that would attract the masses.”
“The Chinese have a sweet treat called Cream Ice. I could try and get the recipe and make it, but I would need a sweetener.”
“Add it to the list. Could it be honey? Or Fruit?”
The demon cow looked up into the Inuhanyou’s face. “I shall try several ideas and bring them to you for your testing.”
“Excellent! Bring enough for the kitchen crew, because if I like it they need to be able to make it.”
“Of course, milord!” The dairyman mooed delightedly.
“What can I do Milord,” the tailor bleated.
“You have so many options,” Inuyasha smiled as he gazed at the sheep demon. “And you don’t need a lot of fabric for some of the ideas. For example, headbands, obis, wristlets, decorative bracers and greaves for kids made from colorful threads. That will catch the eyes of the children and the parents will buy them. You will have to make banners and small flags with Sesshomaru’s image in his dog demon form. I want one already”, Inuyasha smiled at the shy tailor. “Allow your creative side to soar free.
Bashfully the sheep baaed, “May I make one with a silhouette of puppy ears?” The last part was said so softly that the puppy ears in question had to swivel ever so carefully to pick up the soft sounds. It was clear they had received the message when they perked up and twitched.
“I did say let your creative side soar.” Inuyasha laughed. “Can’t imagine they will sell but do whatever you want as long as it’s in good taste. All of you remember your actions reflect on our King, my brother and mate. Now, go, create, and make that list. You have a week. Jaken, you are head coordinator. Show Sesshomaru and me the list when you get it.”
Having been given Lord Inuyasha’s permission to leave, the merchants accompanied the advisors and several guards as they met the refugees and discovering their talents. By the second stop interviewing refugees the tailor had made the acquaintances of several silk worm demons. They got along well. Deciding to work together on the festival projects they all returned to the tailor’s shop and started weaving and creating. The dairyman and the baker remained with the advisors and guards.
The refugees were young and old, human, hanyou, and demon. They were spread throughout the town. The luckier ones had family or friends in town and had moved in with them. Some had tent material and had squatted on the field near the river and the town. Others were forced to sleep in the streets or in the alley ways where they had some cover from the wind and rain. The advisors and several guards laboriously searched for all the individuals, logging their names, talents, and needs.
The baker was fascinated by the use of different flours that the refugees used. He stopped one woman and asked what she was going to use the sweet potatoes for. She explained that if she cooked it and dried it, that she could mash it and make potato flour. The baker left the group to further explore the purple sweet potato uses the woman had invented. ‘We have many purple sweet potatoes from the fields,’ he thought.
“Necessity is the mother of invention,” Jaken reminded him. He had spent enough time with Rin to realize that. Lost in a memory, Jaken thought of the many mushrooms Rin had picked and the dishes she had attempted to create.
One dish even left his tongue numb.
Further down the road of refugees the dairy man met a goat demon sitting down to enjoy some cheese. That was the point where he left the group. The cow and goat compared ideas and then returned to the dairyman’s dairy.
The guards and advisors would spend the remainder of the week finishing the census. As they concluded they realized they had gained many new talents and creative geniuses that would definitely make the castle town stronger and better.
——————————————-
Sesshomaru has flown at top speed non-stop to Bokuneso’s glade. Gathering his wits he rematerialized, straightened out his kimono and Monokomo. In a clear polite voice he introduced his presence. “Bokuneso-sama, it is I, Lord Sesshomaru. I have come requesting your guidance on a matter of the utmost delicate nature.”
Sesshomaru stood where he was, barely breathing, anticipating the old tree’s response. Outwardly he appeared as stoic as ever. Inwardly his emotions ran the gamut. His visits to Bokusenō had increased after introducing him to his brother Inuyasha. The old tree demon was entranced by the inuhanyou’s charms. Usually Inuyasha accompanied him on his visits. Would Inuyasha be upset he missed an opportunity to see the tree? He had begun to see Bokusenō as a grandfatherly figure especially after Inuyasha called him ‘Grandpa’. His wisdom was priceless. And personally anyone who realized the value of his inuhanyou was deserving of respect.
Continuing his reflections as he stood still before the tree, he remembered in his younger years that Bokusenō was not as easy to talk to. Pausing he considered ‘Perhaps I was not as receptive to the pearls of wisdom then.’ Another thought fascinated Sesshomaru. ‘It is so easy to talk to Bokusenō. I would never talk to my mother about this.’ Just then Bokusenō showed his face.
“Lord Sesshomaru, to what do I owe the pleasure of your company?”
Sesshomaru launched straight to the issue.
“Bokusenō, Inuyasha and I have been sexually active since our mating, but recently I knotted in him. What do you know of dog demon knotting?”
The demon tree did not even pause. He was always willing to give information to his ally’s son.
“Very little my Lord. Your great lord father confided in me on many subjects but he did not know the significance of a knot either. He was pondering its possible correlation with his offspring because he had knotted only twice in his life both times prior to his sons’ birth. I suggested he consult a book by an author I had once heard of. His pages are from one of the non-demon trees from the nearby forest. I think the demon author was Ogai Oni, or something like that. If his suspicions are true then has something occurred that allowed a male partner, specifically Inuyasha, to become pregnant?”
“I am uncertain.”
“Are you willing to share the details surrounding the encounter?” The tree’s visage softened and eyes much older gazed at the Western Lord. The golden orbs did not hesitate but relayed the bug infestation, bug bite, and subsequent exploratory examination complete with the pop sound that had registered only in his subconscious mind because his mind was on carnal desires.
The tree was silent as he absorbed all the information. At length he spoke.
“Lord Sesshomaru, I know little personally of copulation because my species spreads our seeds in the wind. But I have watched as many mammals have stumbled through my glade to make love in front of me. No other species knots. The only ones to knot are Inu demons and dumb animals. If you do not wish to talk to your mother about this, consider a human dog breeder. There may be similarities.”
